  I am working on two projects that will both implement a Webdav server backed by a MongoDB GridFS. In each case, there is the potential for the system to store tens of millions of files spread across thousands of hierarchical directories. I can come up with two different ways of storing the directory structure: As a "true" hierarchical file system, with directories containing the IDs (_id) of subdirectories and regular files. The paths will be separated by slashes (/) as in a POSIX-compliant file system. The path /a/b/c will be represented as a directory a containing a directory b containing a file c. As a flat file system, where file names include the slashes. The path /a/b/c will be stored as a single file with the name /a/b/c What are the advantages and disadvantages of each, with respect to a "real" folder-based file system?

• How to define template directives (from an API perspective)?

  Preface I'm writing a template language (don't bother trying to talk me out of it), and in it, there are two kinds of user-extensible nodes. TemplateTags and TemplateDirectives. A TemplateTag closely relates to an HTML tag -- it might look something like div(class="green") { "content" } And it'll be rendered as <div class="green">content</div> i.e., it takes a bunch of attributes, plus some content, and spits out some HTML. TemplateDirectives are a little more complicated. They can be things like for loops, ifs, includes, and other such things. They look a lot like a TemplateTag, but they need to be processed differently. For example, @for($i in $items) { div(class="green") { $i } } Would loop over $items and output the content with the variable $i substituted in each time. So.... I'm trying to decide on a way to define these directives now. Template Tags The TemplateTags are pretty easy to write. They look something like this: [TemplateTag] static string div(string content = null, object attrs = null) { return HtmlTag("div", content, attrs); } Where content gets the stuff between the curly braces (pre-rendered if there are variables in it and such), and attrs is either a Dictionary<string,object> of attributes, or an anonymous type used like a dictionary. It just returns the HTML which gets plunked into its place. Simple! You can write tags in basically 1 line. Basically, the stuff between the ( and ) is not split into arguments automatically (like the template tags do), and the content isn't pre-rendered either. The reason it isn't pre-rendered is because you might want to add or remove some template variables or something first. In this case, we add the $i variable to the template variables, var templateVars = new Dictionary<string, object>(data) { { itemName, item } }; And then render the content manually, sb.Append(template.Render(templateVars)); Question I'm wondering if this is the best approach to defining custom Template Directives. I want to make it as easy as possible. What if the user doesn't know how to render templates, or doesn't know that he's supposed to? Maybe I should pass in a Template instance pre-filled with the content instead? Or maybe only let him tamper w/ the template variables, and then automatically render the content at the end? OTOH, for things like "if" if the condition fails, then the template wouldn't need to be rendered at all. So there's a lot of flexibility I need to allow in here. Thoughts?

• GKTank example is not working.

  Hello, I'm trying to get the GKTank example working with 2 iPhones. Both have bluetooth enabled. I start the app on both devices and tap the screen. The Peer Picker comes up and the devices find each other. If I select one device in the list it says "Waiting for {other iPhone}..." forever. On the {other iPhone} the waiting phone gets grayed out. If I select the device to connect to from both devices at the same time both go into waiting state forever... • OWB 11gR2 &ndash; Degenerate Dimensions

  Ever wondered how to build degenerate dimensions in OWB and get the benefits of slowly changing dimensions and cube loading? Now its possible through some changes in 11gR2 to make the dimension and cube loading much more flexible. This will let you get the benefits of OWB's surrogate key handling and slowly changing dimension reference when loading the fact table and need degenerate dimensions (see Ralph Kimball's degenerate dimensions design tip). Here we will see how to use the cube operator to load slowly changing, regular and degenerate dimensions. The cube and cube operator can now work with dimensions which have no surrogate key as well as dimensions with surrogates, so you can get the benefit of the cube loading and incorporate the degenerate dimension loading. What you need to do is create a dimension in OWB that is purely used for ETL metadata; the dimension itself is never deployed (its table is, but has not data) it has no surrogate keys has a single level with a business attribute the degenerate dimension data and a dummy attribute, say description just to pass the OWB validation. When this degenerate dimension is added into a cube, you will need to configure the fact table created and set the 'Deployable' flag to FALSE for the foreign key generated to the degenerate dimension table. The degenerate dimension reference will then be in the cube operator and used when matching. Create the degenerate dimension using the regular wizard. Delete the Surrogate ID attribute, this is not needed. Define a level name for the dimension member (any name). After the wizard has completed, in the editor delete the hierarchy STANDARD that was automatically generated, there is only a single level, no need for a hierarchy and this shouldn't really be created. Deploy the implementing table DD_ORDERNUMBER_TAB, this needs to be deployed but with no data (the mapping here will do a left outer join of the source data with the empty degenerate dimension table). Now, go ahead and build your cube, use the regular TIMES dimension for example and your degenerate dimension DD_ORDERNUMBER, can add in SCD dimensions etc. Configure the fact table created and set Deployable to false, so the foreign key does not get generated. Can now use the cube in a mapping and load data into the fact table via the cube operator, this will look after surrogate lookups and slowly changing dimension references.   If you generate the SQL you will see the ON clause for matching includes the columns representing the degenerate dimension columns. Here we have seen how this use case for loading fact tables using degenerate dimensions becomes a whole lot simpler using OWB 11gR2. I'm sure there are other use cases where using this mix of dimensions with surrogate and regular identifiers is useful, Fact tables partitioned by date columns is another classic example that this will greatly help and make the cube operator much more useful. • A way for an Upstart event to be sent whenever ecryptfs homedir mounted/unmounted?

  I have an encrypted homedir (ecryptfs) and I'm wanting to run a private mysql daemon with the database files in my homedir. The daemon should be started whenever the homedir is mounted, and stopped before the homedir is unmounted. It seems I have to write an Upstart script, which doesn't seem too hard; the problem is triggering it. Is there already any Upstart event that is sent on these occasions? Or must I insert an "initctl emit" somewhere? Where? It seems the encrypted homedir is mounted whenever I either open my GUI session or ssh to my account. Is there a common place in these two processes where I might insert code? (I don't want to patch and compile any C code, just insert maybe a few lines somewere.) David

  A lot of interesting things happed in my life recently. I won the “Windows @ Work Contest”  from IT Toolbox and as I was not eligible to get the prize I arranged a 500 US$ donation to Kidsave.org. April 1st was also a very special day in my life, not only it was April Fools days, but it was also when I first received my Microsoft MVP Award for Windows Desktop Experience. I had enough time to celebrate, but my boss went on vacations the day before. Today he came back to the office with a very nice surprise. Yes! • Webmaster Tools - URL Parameters Settings Do Not Work

  Google Webmaster Tools shows problems with duplicate title tags under Optimization - HTML Improvements, for example: ???????? Mitsubishi Electric Mr. Slim PC Series PC-3KAKLT (220V) 30000 BTU > /????-????/mitsubishi-mr-slim-pc3kaklt-30000-btu.html > /????-????/mitsubishi-mr-slim-pc3kaklt-30000-btu.html?category_id=96 These two pages have exactly the same content, a rel-canonical tag is set, and they are (no longer) linked to internally. Additionally, we used the Configuration - URL Parameters setting, to set this parameter to No: Doesn't affect page content about one month ago. However, Google is still showing these HTML improvements (and rankings dropped dramatically). What else can we do here? Best, David

• Copy machine security issues.

  I am involved on a project to talk to communities about the risks of posting online content is social networks. But this time I was really impressed how far security concerns can go. This video from CBS news talks about security risks related to corporate fax/printers and scanners. It was very clear that when they got the machines they selected the machines by previous owner and they were not random machines, but still, I will never scan from my company machine again. • Post Deploy MAAS cleanup

  I have a mostly working MAAS cluster. I'm still learning juju, but while I'm doing that, I wanted to take this opportunity to do some clean-up tasks. Here are my goals: Configure ntp on the nodes. Set the video mode on the nodes. Set the timezone on the nodes. Are these juju tasks? Or is this better attacked by mounting the disk image on the MAAS host, and doing the configuration there? If I do it that way, how do I get the nodes to recognize that they have to re-install the image to pickup my changes? Thank you. David

• U1 music mp3 files not put into albums

  Via the web page I can see that my files sync to U1 cloud servers. For the mp3 files, there seems to be a problem that several questions have already addressed but there does not seem to be a clear answer. If I use EasyTAG 2.1.6, I can see the ID3 tags on the local files and they seem to correctly define the artist, album title and track name. I expect it is not relevant, but I am using 10.04 with several different clients to rip the CDs. However, some mp3 files do not appear in the cloud at all and some others get assigned to Various Artist or Unknown artist. Does the music streaming (e.g. via Ipad) use the tags or the directory/file structure to assign the artist or album, and how quickly should it be expected to work? :-) Which version of ID3 tags does U1 music streaming work best with or prefer? thanks for any help David

• Software developer needs Validation for VA Chap 31 to purchase Macbook Pro vs. PC [closed]

  I am currently attending college with a path of software development and working towards my BS thanks to VA Chap 31. My old original Macbook Pro is near dead and no longer upgradable on the software or hardware side. The VA has offered to purchase a PC laptop for me (Because my syllabi says computer required), but I do not want to go backwards. I have a lot invested in OS X software and Mac peripherals, not to mention I prefer to program in an Apple environment. PC vs. Mac costs are so drastically different that I must validate my request for a new Macbook Pro. In my request to the VA, I stated the above and some other topics but they requested more validation. Can anyone recommend issues, reasons, etc. to help me validate this purchase by the VA for school? Thanks in advance for your help, David

• How to remove duplicate content, which is still indexed, but not linked to anymore?

  A bug in the tool, which we use to create search-engine-friendly URLs changed our whole URL-structure overnight, and we only noticed after Google already indexed the page. Now, we have a massive duplicate content issue, causing a harsh drop in rankings. Webmaster Tools shows over 1,000 duplicate title tags, so I don't think, Google understands what is going on. Right URL: abc.com/price/sharp-ah-l13-12000-btu.html Wrong URL: abc.com/item/sharp-l-series-ahl13-12000-btu.html (created by mistake) After that, we ... Changed back all URLs to the "Right URLs" Set up a 301-redirect for all "Wrong URLs" a few days later Now, still a massive amount of pages is in the index twice. As we do not link internally to the "Wrong URLs" anymore, I am not sure, if Google will re-crawl them very soon. What can we do to solve this issue and tell Google, that all the "Wrong URLs" now redirect to the "Right URLs"? Best, David

• Backup systems config files

  I'm planning on installing nVidia proprietary drivers on my Ubuntu 10.10. Historically this always ends-up with me being left with no graphical interface. No ability to revert - and reinstalling the whole system. So now, before trying this anew, I wish to backup all relevant config files. I'll try 1 or 2 methods. I'll list each one's commands. I'll appreciate if anyone can tell me how to backup the relevant file, or what's the reverse of this operation. 10x, David Method I - as described here: apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau As described in this answer: edit /etc/default/grub and add the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0" sudo update-grub Reboot Install original drivers downloaded from nVidia site. • KMenu & shell script

  I'm trying to make a very small shell script with a simple command and add it up to the KMenu. Well, thing is that once it launches the shell script, it closes it fast and I want to leave it open because the shell script attempts to create run a web application using a framework. I tried with this first #!/bin/bash play run /home/david/Projects/ZS then I tried with this #!/bin/bash konsole -e play run /home/david/Projects/ZSBlackboard In terminal, it runs perfectly, but in launcher.. not so much Any solution or suggestion is appreciated, thanks

I hope you can help me. I started using Ubuntu yesterday so please give me the complete terminal code, it will be a lot easier for me. For those who care I want to play Minecraft and with the OpenJDK I got a java.lang error. That's why I want to install Oracle Java.
