• C#: How to Make it Harder for Hacker/Cracker to Get Around or Bypass the Licensing Check?

  Hi all, Suppose that the user has saved the License file under the Application.StartupPath, where all users can read. And then, every time when the app starts, it will check if it can find and verify the license file. If the app can find and verify, we let the user to continue with full functinalities. If not, we prompt a MessageBox showing "Unlicencsed, continue to use with trial version, functionalities limited." My question is, if I'm a hacker/cracker, I would try to get around or bypass the licensing check instead of cracking the license file, because, if we use RSA signature, it's very difficult to crack a license file. Peter P.S.: and also, is it safe if I put a global variable IsLicensed (true / false) to limit the functionalities? Is it easy for a hacker to change IsLicensed = true?

  I have some troubles to find the right loop to check if some values are contained in mysql DB. I'm making a software and I want to add license ID. Each user has x keys to use. Now when the user start the client, it invokes a PHP page that check if the Key sent in the POST method is stored in DB or not. If that key isn't store than I need to check the number of his keys. If it's than X I'll ban him otherwise i add the new keys in the DB. I'm new with PHP and MYSQL.   My job is to refactor an old library for GIS vector data processing. The main class encapsulates a collection of building outlines, and offers different methods for checking data consistency. Those checking functions have an optional parameter that allows to perform some process. For instance: std::vector<Point> checkIntersections(int process_mode = 0); This method tests if some building outlines are intersecting, and return the intersection points. But if you pass a non null argument, the method will modify the outlines to remove the intersection. I think it's pretty bad (at call site, a reader not familiar with the code base will assume that a method called checkSomething only performs a check and doesn't modifiy data) and I want to change this. I also want to avoid code duplication as check and process methods are mostly similar.   I am using the VSSConveter.exe tool to import from VSS6 (using 2005 ide) to TFS2008. I have run analyze (no errors) and migrate WITH a user mapping file (containg the vss/domain user mappings) I would like to persist in tfs the check-in user of the file, currently the check-in user for all versions of file shows as admin (the account im running the import with), the origional check-in user is appended to the check-in comment. For example:- TestFile.aspx in VSS Check in ver: 1 - User:Adam - Comment:TEST1 Check in ver: 2 - User:James - Comment:TEST2 Check in ver: 3 - User:Joel - Comment:TEST2 After import into TFS Check in ver: 1 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST1 (Commited by Adam) Check in ver: 2 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST2 (Commited by James) Check in ver: 3 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST2 (Commited by Joel) In TFS I want the user to show as the correct domain user as configured in my user mapping file. The comment is a bit confusing, so I was wondering what does that comment actually mean?   I am used to using the Firebug extension "Omnibug" with Firefox to check that Google Analytics Tracking Code is firing on my website. This application works very well and has minimal overhead. I am now testing the website on an iPad and would like to know if there is a way to check that the GATC is firing on the iPad natively? I have spoofed the iPad UA string on Firefox on the desktop and it appears to fire correctly, however i'd like to see it happening on the device itself (if at all possible). I know that Firebug can be installed on an iPhone by means of a bookmarklet, however it is 1) quite buggy and not very user-friendly and 2) it doesn't support Omnibug. How can I check that my GATC is firing on my iPad?

  I have got a new Samsung Series 7 laptop with dual boot setup for Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.10. The Ubuntu installation was quite a hassle, but with the help of Boot Repair finally it seemed to work. Or so I thought. Windows 8 starts fine, but if I want to start Ubuntu regularly the following error occurs, quite similar to this one [Hardware Error] CPU 1: Machine Check Exception: 5 Bank 6 [Hardware Error] RIP !inexact! 33 <00007fab2074598a> [Hardware Error] TSC 95b623464c ADDR fe400 MISC 3880000086 .. [similar messages for CPU 2,3 and 0] .. [Hardware Error] Machine Check: Processor context corrupt Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal Machine Check Rebooting in 30 seconds Kernel panic does not sound good. Then it starts to reboot, and the second boot trial often works. Is it a Kernel or driver problem? The laptop has an Intel Core i7 processor. I already deactivated Hyperthreading in the BIOS, but it does not seem to help :-(

  I'm curious what code review policies other development shops apply to their source code when it's checked into the source control repository. I'm setting up a TFS (Team Foundation) server, and I'd like to apply some check-in policies to start to stamp out bad practices. For example, I was thinking of starting with the following couple, so this is the kind of stuff I'm looking for: Prohibit empty "Catch" blocks. This would prevent applications from swallowing any exceptions without at least requiring a comment explaining why it's not necessary to do anything with the exception. Prohibit "Catch ex as Exception" generic exception handling. Instead, require code to catch specific types of exceptions and deal with them appropriately, instead of just building catch-all handling. Require a check-in comment. This one should be self-explanatory, though it seems that TFS (and most other source-control systems) don't require a comment by default. While these are just examples, they're where I'm thinking of starting, and while I'd like some additional examples of what's popular, I'm open to feedback on these. Also, though we're a mostly .NET shop, I imagine the popular policies are universal across languages and IDEs (we have some Java development and a few people who will use the repository develop with Eclipse).

  I have a game using DirectX 9, and a development station using Win 7 x64. I am still able to get access to another station with Vista x64 / dual booted with WinXP x86. I wanted to check early Z efficiency in the game and to my sadness all tools I have tried seem to be unable to perform this task: AMD PerfStudio AMD GPUPerfStudio 2 does not support DirectX 9 at all AMD GPUPerfStudio 1.2 does not install correctly on Windows 7. When I have tweaked the MSI package (a simple OS version check adjustment was needed), it complained the drivers I have do not provide needed instrumentation. The drivers old enough to support the GPUPerfStudio would most likely not be able to operate with my Radeon 5750 card (though this is something I am not 100 % sure, I did not attempt to try any older drivers, not knowing which I should look for) PIX PIX does not seem to contain any counters like this. It offers some ATI specific counters, but when I try to activate them, the PIX reports "PIX encountered a problem while attaching to the target program." I do not want to upgrade to DX 10/11 just to be able to profile the game, but it seems without the step I am somewhat locked with a toolset which is no longer supported. I see only one obvious options which would probably work, and that is using WinXP (or with a little bit of luck even Vista) station, perhaps with some older AMD card, to make sure GPUPerfStudio 1.2 works. Other than that, can anyone recommend other options how to check GPU HW counters (HiZ / EarlyZ in particular, but if others would be enabled as well, it would be a nice bonus) for a DirectX 9 game on Windows 7, preferably on AMD GPU? (If that is not possible, I would definitely prefer switching GPU to switching the OS, but before I do so I would like to know if I will not hit the same problem with nVidia again)

• Brother MFC-J470DW scan function "Check Connection"

  I have a Brother MFC-J470DW printer that I have connected to a Linux desktop (running Ubuntu 14.04) using a wireless router network. The printer works fine for printing and copying, but now I want to add the scan function. To set up the scan function, I went to the Brother web page for this printer: http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=eu_ot&lang=en&prod=mfcj470dw_us_eu_as&os=128 and under Scanner Drivers selected "Scanner driver 64bit (deb package)", "Scan-key-tool 64bit (deb package)", and "Scanner Setting file (deb package)". For each package, I clicked the EULA, and selected "open with Ubuntu Software Center". Then after the USC window pops up, I click on Install and the red line goes from left to right. In each case, the USC window then had a green checkmark and the Install box changes to Reinstall (that's how you know it worked). So now I try it out. Hitting the Scan button on the printer, selecting "Scan to file", and hitting ok produces the message "Check Connection". I checked the Brother Linux Information FAQ (scanner) page and the 14th question seems the same as mine: When I try to use the scan key on my network connected machine, I receive the error "Check connection" or I can not select anything except "scan to FTP". I explored the solution given for this FAQ, but found from ifconfig that I am already using eth0, the default setting, so presumably that is not the problem. I also found brscan-skey installed in /usr/bin and did drrm@drrmlinux2:~$ brscan-skey -t drrm@drrmlinux2:~$ brscan-skey but that didn't help - I still get the "Check connection" message. What can you suggest to fix this problem?

I copied it from here because I own a German Version and I therefore thought that an English one would be simpler to understand.) I turned both options off and tried to restart IE. It's still "correcting" my texts. Searching for 'spelling correction' addons As said in the picture, this entry does not exist on my PC. (The following screenshot is taken from here) Is there any way of disabling it? I prefer an "official" solution if one is available. Otherwise, I also take any registry involving Solutions.
