  • any basic app packaging gui for a newbie?

  • Newbie tips, please [closed]

    So, I just got a new computer and I want to put Ubuntu on my old laptop. I just need few tips before installing it. 1.Programs, where to download, how to download, what is the "ending" (windows has .exe) 2. How much is command line involved? And where to get the most usual commands? 3.Few programs you recommend (graphics editing, IDE, video player, web browser) 4. Do I have to download drivers when installing new OS? I plan on getting fully rid of Windows. I have no idea of the name of my graphics card, so how do I can get to know what it is if I have to download drivers? (I don't know the name because it's not on the original box, or anywhere on the internet, believe me) 5. When installing new OS does it destroy everything else on the hard drive? 6. Anti-virus, do I need one? I'm not super paranoid, and I don't visit "shady" sites. Please note that I have never used linux, or any other OS than Windows and sorry for my bad english.   • SharePoint For Newbie Developers: Code Scope

    So, I continue to try to come up with diagrams and information to help new SharePoint developers wrap their heads around this SharePoint beast, especially when those newer to development are on my team. To that end, I drew up the below diagram to help some of our junior devs understand where/when code is being executed in SharePoint at a high level. Note that I say “High Level”… This is a simplistic diagram that can get a LOT more complicated if you want to dive in deeper.  For the purposes of my lesson it served its purpose well. So, please no comments from you peanut gallery about information 3 levels down that’s missing unless it adds to the discussion.  Thanks So, the diagram below details where code is executed on a page load and gives the basic flow of the page load. There are actually many more steps, but again, we are staying high level here. I just know someone is still going to say something like “Well.. actually… the dlls are getting executed when…”  Anyway, here’s the diagram with some information I like to point out: Code Scope / Where it is executed So, looking at the diagram we see that dlls and XSL are executed on the server and that JavaScript/jQuery are executed on the client. This is the main thing I like to point out for the following reasons: XSL (for the most part) is faster than JavaScript I actually get this question a lot. Since XSL is executed on the server less data is getting passed over the wire and a beefier machine (hopefully) is doing the processing. The outcome of course is better performance. When You are using jQuery and making Web Service calls you are building XML strings and sending them to the server, then ALL the results come back and the client machine has to parse through the XML and use what it needs and ignore the rest (and there is a lot of garbage that comes back from SharePoint Web Service calls). XSL and JavaScript cannot work together in the same scope Let me clarify. JavaScript can send data back to SharePoint in postbacks that XSL can then use. XSL can output JavaScript and initiate JavaScript variables.  However, XSL cannot call a JavaScript method to get a value and JavaScript cannot directly interact with XSL and call its templates. They are executed in there scope only. No crossing of boundaries here. So, what does this all mean? Well, nothing too deep. This is just some basic fundamental information that all SharePoint devs need to understand. It will help you determine what is the best solution for your specific development situation and it will help the new guys understand why they get an error when trying to call a JavaScript Function from within XSL.  Let me know if you think quick little blogs like this are helpful or just add to the noise.   • Newbie needs to learn basic file management

    I have been using Ubuntu for abut 2 weeks and and still frustrated by simple file operations. I want to find a file called 9.jpg. Every internal command 3-rd party program I have tried also gives me 99.jpg, 999.jpg, lovepotion number9.jpg and a zillion other similar ones. How do you search for an EXACT file name WITHOUT wildcards? This is only my most recent frustration. I'm obviously missing something basic. good tutorial anywhere?

    I am learning ASP.Net and I am confusing between ASP.Net WebPages, ASP.Net WebForms and ASP.Net MVC. I have read a lot of articles and known the simple difference of their functions, but I don't know the differences of their code. E.g: When I look at int* p = new int(); ... I know that it's C++ style. and Dim A as String it have to be Visual Basic. [?1] I'm not able to detect like that in ASP.Net. How do they different in codes? I use Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition.I like to use C# (I also was learned VisualBasic in shool, but I don't like him). When I create a new project, there're too many types of project, then, I don't know which I should choose (I just want to make a simple site). [?2] What are they used to? Thanks

    I need to generate a half pyramid number series with the entered starting number and the number of lines in a html page using Javascript and show the result in html page . I have done the Java scripting and stuff . What I don't get is the logic to it. If $start = 5 and $lines = 3 then output should be like: 5 5 6 5 6 7 I have had used the for loop , but that doesn't work if I give my own start number that is higher than the number of lines. I actually need it done with Javascript, I have had done the necessary but I'm confused with the logic to generate such series (with the user given values) I had actually used two for loops to generate the regular number series like below 1 1 2 1 2 3 and so on.

  • Google analytics not provided for 55% of total traffic

    I've been here and here to learn what (not provided) means. Now the question is if what I am seeing in my Google Analytics stats for my website is considered normal (and whether I can/should do anything about it). Here are the statistics from one day, but other days are similar: 102 visits, 57 is from (not provided), that's over 55% of unknown keywords. Is it normal to have it like that? Does google plan to do anything about it? In other words, what's the perspective? In my understanding, with this approach, as people switch to https, Analytics will stop being useful. Please correct me if I am wrong in my assumptions.

    When I click on video file nothing happens, I tried to make a link to it /media/DATA/#TO_BACKUP/_MUSIC/MUSIC2/Black Eyed Peas - The Time (Dirty Bit).avi but it says Failed to execute child process "/media/DATA/" (Permission denied) Opening the full location from MediaPlayer does not work (open location) Location not found I can open it slowly by navigating in the slow file open dialog, but I would like to open it from totalcmd or by created link or by passing full location. P.S. Before that I have opened the DATA Partition.

  • Working hours for a newbie

    This is not a very related software / hardware question, but it's too related to the Tech world. I started a work 3 months before, and I am about to finish this week, and my boss asked me to do a planning of what I've done so far, I think this is totally ok, but he is asking for what I did each day with the hours I spent in these days. This is a sample of what I sent him M T W T F week 29/06 to 03/07 compréhension et analyse du problématique * * architecture de l'application * * * which translates to first task, I spent Monday + Tuesday on, and the last W, T, and Friday. What he is asking for, is what I've done in each day, with the timing I spent on (obviously, I don't think I remember, and because for a programmer, there are no sequence tasks, I mean I change code in a class, then change it in another to fit with the new one and so far) So my question is: is what he asking normal? and if so how can I detail the planning for the 3 months. [update] I used the email account we use to test our software with the extern servers, and I got a good view of what I was doing in every day :), a generic view but it helped too much (PS: The boss doesn't know anything about programming, for him, it's like writing lines and get results back nothing more )

  • Positioned element adding to total div height [migrated]

    I have a 800 x 600 rotatable image with forward and back buttons repositioned to the sides. The height of the div is suppose to be 600px, but the actual height of the div was pushed to 690, including the height of the button image. And the div was blocking a row of clickable menu on top. So I made the div height to 518px and moved top -75px to get the real dimension I want. But I feel dirty doing this... Is there a correct way to do this? Or is this workaround more or less correct?   • Count total file size of many files in Windows

    When I want to burn a CD R with lots of files, I have to make sure the total file size in my folder doesn't exceed the capacity of the disc (680MB). In Windows are there possibilities to check the total file size of a bunch of files. I put them in a folder, right-click and check the properties. But this is an annoying trial and error kind of way. Either there are too many files in the folder, or too little. I watch the file size go up as I keep selecting more files, using ALT+going down button. No. 2 is my favorite way to do it. Here's my question: For some reason Windows (I still use XP) only shows the total file size of 100 selected files. When you select more than 100 files, no file size information appears any more. Is there way, a trick, an app, to work around this problem?

I'd like to set the max amount of squid users internet use to 1200 since our total band is 2000 and I need the rest to ensure other services such as voip to work without hiccups related to huge downloads on the "internet side" of our connection and similar issues.     I have a pivot table that shows how many condoms have been handed out and on how many distinct occasions. So the value in the pivot table is a number between 1 and 30 (no. of condoms handed out at one specific occasion) and then I can see – for each month – how many times that happened. For example, three times, two condoms were given out, four times, one condom was given out, et cetera. The total is set on Count and it shows the total of how many times condoms have been given out. However, in the total I want it to show the sum of all the condoms that been given out each month – is it possible to change this somehow?
