  • C compiler producing lightweight executeables

    I'm currently using MSVC for C++ but as I'm switching to C to write a very performance-intensive program (interpreter) I have to search for a fitting C compiler. I've looked at some binaries produced by Turbo-C and even if its old they seem pretty straigthforward and optimized. Now I don't know what the best compiler for building an interpreter is, but maybe you can help me. I've considered GCC but as I don't know much about it, I can't be really sure.

  • Can my laptop run dual 1080p (Sony Vaio - Nvidia 330M)

    I am looking to buy a monitor to setup dual monitors for my laptop and was wondering if my laptop could handle 2 x 1080p. I have a Sony Vaio VPCF116FG which has a Nvidia GeForce 330M chip and 1GB dedicated graphics memory. The laptop also has a Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor (1.60 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.80 GHz) but I don't know if that's relevant(?). The laptop screen has a native resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080) so I'll be looking at buying a external monitor with 1080p to connect up using a HDMI cable. So, the question is, will my laptop be able to handle it's own 1080p screen AND an external 1080p screen? TIA, Charles

  • SAN cache memory upgrade

    We currently have an IBM DS4300 Dual Controller Fibre SAN. It is a good box, but getting pretty old. It came with 256MB of cache per controller. Recently we replaced the batteries in one of the controllers and noticed that the cache is a DDR PC2100 ECC DIMM. Of course, we are thinking about how cheap this RAM is now and is there any good reason we can't upgrade the RAM. IBM used to have a "Turbo" upgrade to this box that doubled the cache and had a bunch of software features for about 10K USD. Since that product has been end-of-lifed, I don't think we can get that upgrade and we don't need the software upgrades (FlashCopy, StorageCopy, etc). Besides the obvious potential warranty issue, what if any issues would we expect to see if attempting to put 2 - 1GB DIMMS in this unit? Any other things I am missing here?     A few days ago I bought a HP Envy 14, containing 2 graphics card: An integrated Intel graphics card, and an ATI HD 5650. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on the machine. Most things work fine out of the box, but the graphics cards are giving me trouble. When booting, I get the message "failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled". Then the screen blanks out during the remaining boot period. I am able to get the display working by changing to one of the consoles, then closing and opening the laptop's lid. It seems that Ubuntu gets confused about which card to use. I've read here: http://www.andreas-demmer.de/en/2010/07/18/testbericht-linux-auf-dem-hp-envy-14 that I should be able to turn off one the cards by echoing keywords into /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, but that path is not available on my system. The BIOS does not have any methods to switch of the ATI card. Help anyone? /Carsten

  • Windows 7 won't restart with SSD

    I have this annoying problem that I just can't seem to fix. Recently I upgraded my main boot drive to an OCZ Vertex Turbo (60GB) which is an SSD. I've installed Windows 7 64bit. The drive works, and is really quick... blah blah blah. My problem is when I do a restart, for example click start, then arrow next to shutdown, and restart. The computer will shut down, and do a warm reboot, but it gets stuck where it says loading Windows. Just before the animation starts. So what I have to do is physically press the reset switch on the computer, then it restarts, firing up a menu which offers to launch Windows Startup Repair, so I select "Start Windows Normally". After this I boot in normally, but its damn annoying. Any ideas why this is happening, what I can do to fix it?

  • Domain users sometimes cannot access our NAS

    I'm using a QNAP TS-410 Turbo NAS and I've got domain users connecting to it frequently everyday. However, there are times when their connection to the NAS will seem to just drop and, suddenly, they cannot access their network drives (which I had set up our Domain Controller to automatically map to folders on the NAS). Could you please tell me what may cause this? I don't think it is a network issue as everything else seems to work just fine. (If more details are needed, please let me know so I can update this question.)

  • Windows 7 strange boot issue

    Recently I installed an SSD drive, its now my primary boot drive (OCZ Vertex Turbo 60GB). I'm running Win 7 (64bit). Now I am not sure exactly where the fault lies, but when I do a restart from within Windows, the computer will boot and enter into the loading windows portion, however won't progress beyond there. My solution is to manually hit the reset switch, and then when it boots it enters into a windows menu that offers a start up repair or start windows normally. I select start windows normally, and then it boots fine. I am not entirely sure why I can't just restart the computer from windows normally though. The SSD drive works perfectly, and not even sure if it is the cause to this problem. Any ideas on this?

  • NVIDIA Driver Crashing on Custom-Built Windows 7 PC

    I've got a custom-built PC with these specs: Fractal Design Define R3 ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard Intel Core i7-2700k with Thermalright HR-02 Macho Cooler NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 with Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II Cooler Crucial M4 128 GB SSD 1 TB Hitachi HDD G.SKILL Ares Series 2x8 GB RAM (x2) SeaSonic 520W PSU Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) NVIDIA driver version 301.42 Upon building the PC, I overclocked the CPU (but never the GPU), and there were no problems for 1-2 months. Then I started getting crashes with this error when doing anything that's computationally or graphically intensive: I un-overclocked the CPU, but that hasn't fixed anything. This is what the inside of my case looks like: I'd appreciate any guidance on resolving this problem. I did get some of the thermal paste on the graphics card when installing the aftermarket cooler, but there were no issues for a month or two. Update I did a clean install and the issue persisted - looks like it's a hardware issue. I will try removing/cleaning/reseating all the parts.

  • Using a Token-ring network card instead of a router (?)

    I have cable, and the modem only has 1 network plug-in. They said I could buy my own router if I wanted to hook up two computers to it. I have an IBM Turbo 16/4 Token-Ring PC Card 2, which was in the laptop when I bought it, and the laptop also has the typical network plug (not a PC Card). Is there a way I could run the laptop as a server, and plug my desktop into the laptop, so they both have internet without my having to buy a router? (I realize routers are as cheap as $30.) Both computers run Windows XP Pro SP3. (I also have an 10/100 Etherjet Cardbus card (PC Card)). Thanks.

  • Just installed Ubuntu 12.04. When booting, all I get is a black screen with cursor

    Installation appears to go fine. After rebooting, I get my motherboard loading screens, but when it comes time for Ubuntu to boot, I just get a black screen with a blinking white underscore in the top-left - same as I got when waiting for the install CD to load, except it lasts forever. The only keypress it seems to recognize is ctrl+alt+del, which reboots. Letters don't register, function keys w/ or w/o modifiers do nothing. I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 twice and got the same error. The first time, I installed it as the only OS, and had it take up the whole disk. The second time, I installed Windows 7 first, then Ubuntu by specifying custom partitions. After this install, it would boot straight to Windows without showing grub. I used EasyBCD to add the Ubuntu installation to grub, and this got grub to show, and let me select it, but it led back to the same error described up top. I've had Linux Mint 11 and 12 installed on this PC, but was unable to get previous versions of Ubuntu to install (always had errors while installing, not after).     Delphi 2009 is due in the next couple months, which is its 12th release since Turbo Pascal became Delphi in 1995. Despite continued innovation it has not returned to its level of popularity before the Inprise fiasco. Many developers with Delphi backgrounds are moving to C# and many Delphi legacy applications are being rewritten in C#, despite the fact Delphi supports .NET and in many cases the existing application could be ported without rewriting. Is it just a losing battle to compete against Microsoft's tools on their platform? Is there something Code Gear / Delphi can do now that they are under new management to regain market share? What can enthusiasts do to help? Why do you do Delphi programming? or Why are you not doing Delphi programming?
