  • How to throttle bandwidth speed from VPS

    - by Burning the Codeigniter
I was wondering if you can throttle/boost the download speed from my VPS to me, because now and often I download a database which is quite big, typically 5-7GB. My side is quite slow (typically I have max speeds of 100Kb/s) so I was wondering if it's possible to throttle the bandwidth speed from my server to me that it could make the download much faster. If this is possible, how can I do this? My server is running Ubuntu 11.04 with a 100Mbps line.

  • File download speed issue over a dedicated fibre link

    - by nixnotwin
My ISP has installed a fibre based dedicated internet connection at the place where I work. In the beginning the connection terminated at one of the ISP's core routers. It resulted in a strange issue. Eventhough the assigned speed was 5mbps, when tests were done by downloading large files over http and ftp from multiple locations, the speed never went above 2mbps. But bittorrent downloads reached 5mbps. Even file download from the ISP servers were fine. So, at the ISP our link was attached directly to their edge router. After this file downloads from high bandwidth servers, like Google and MS, reached the 5 mbps limit. Sometimes the speed would fall down below 2 mbps and suddenly it will go up to the 5 mbps limit ( it keeps on happening during any single file download). But other downloads like ubuntu apt repositories still struggle to go above 2 mbps. The engineers at the ISP have not been able to sort out the issue. After they moved us to their edge router instead of giving us 8 public ip's, they just gave 4 ip's. When we enquired about it, they told us that giving more ip's would result in arp overload at their edge router. But somehow I was able to convince them to give us the 8 ip's which we wanted. But the file download issue has remained. What might be the reason for files from different location getting downloaded with different speeds, that too with heavy fluctuation in speeds? I have downloaded files from same url's from a connection belonging to another smaller ISP, and the speeds were fine and reached full 5 mbps limit.

  • what is duck typing?

    - by ashish yadav
I recently read an article about duck-typing.It said about calling functions of different classes using object of any class. Is it true? And how will the compiler do it on runtime? I apologize if i am not clear. But it really fascinates me , if we could do it dynamically. So if u people got any idea.I am all ears. thank you!! how will the function be accessed by object of any other class. that violates the basic principle of OOP.and that too dynamically during runtime. And is this feature possible in case of OOP languages?

  • C++ Typing and OOP child classes

    - by Zack
I'm a bit confused: If I have a base class A, and a class B which extends A, can a variable of the type A hold a value of the type B and vice versa? If yes, why? Aren't they completely different even if B is derived from A? How about type-safety? If this is possible, what things do I have to mind when taking use of this? How would this work out in terms of performance? Note: Sorry if I asked too many questions, just ignore them and just look out for those "marked" with the list decoration dot :) Also, this is not my homework. I'm a hobby programmer and have skills in scripting languages with OOP, yet I'm relatively new to OOP typing in C++.

  • how Infiniband speed is related to processor speed

    - by user223231
I have two exactly the same servers and very curious how to make Infiniband interconnection between them? Both servers' basic specs are: CPU: 32GHz = 2x Intel Xeon X5650, 6 core, 2.66GHz and RAM: 24GB per server (edited) How determine what speed of Infiniband will be enough for perfect interconnection? SDR, DDR, QDR or FDR? My logic is 32Ghz = 32Gb/s and 40Gb one is enough, am I right or it is not that simple?

  • HP SmartArray P400 has slow read and write speed

    - by Tadas D.
I have desktop in which I installed HP SmartArray P400 controller with two HP DF0146B8052 hard drives. I made RAID0 logical volume from them, but I am getting 20MB/s write speed and ~140-120MB/s read speed. Also there is quite low scatter for benchmark results (I am getting quite nice line) and it looks like controller is "capping" my speeds. I tried reseting controllers configuration and I haven't found any settings in HP ACU (Array Configuration Utility) to help me. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and M4A78 board Does anyone have ideas what could be wrong? Also I am attaching diagnostic results.

  • Can I speed up cygwin's fork?

    - by Andrew Aylett
I came across a post discussing the speed of forking in Cygwin, giving an expected 'fork rate' in Windows XP of around 30-50 per-second (link) I've got a Core 2 duo (1.79GHz) which I would expect to get comparable results, but it's only managing around 8 forks per second (and sometimes a lot fewer): $ while (true); do date --utc; done | uniq -c 5 Wed Apr 21 12:38:10 UTC 2010 6 Wed Apr 21 12:38:11 UTC 2010 1 Wed Apr 21 12:38:12 UTC 2010 1 Wed Apr 21 12:38:13 UTC 2010 8 Wed Apr 21 12:38:14 UTC 2010 8 Wed Apr 21 12:38:15 UTC 2010 6 Wed Apr 21 12:38:16 UTC 2010 1 Wed Apr 21 12:38:18 UTC 2010 9 Wed Apr 21 12:38:19 UTC 2010 Can you suggest anything I might be able to do to speed things up? This machine acts a lot slower in Cygwin than others I've used before which actually were a lot slower.

  • Maximum burn speed keeps decreasing from Nero?

    - by Bob King
I have a 16x DL DVD burner in my work machine (XP SP3). I'm using 8x TDK DVD+R media. The first dozen or so disks burned fine using Nero, but after that I started to coaster every disk. I asked Nero to calculate the maximum speed, and it calculated it at 4x. This worked for a few disks, then the same issues. I'm currently burning at 1.2x. I've since tried other brands and full 16x compatible disks, I can't get my burn speed to be recognized as any faster than what it's currently at. I've tried uninstalling Nero. I've tried burning directly in Windows, and also tested an MP3 CD in iTunes, and no luck. Any suggestions, short of reinstalling Windows, would be great!

  • Actual High Speed USB flash drive

    - by CSkau
I'm looking to upgrade my EEE 1000H by possibly replacing the HDD with simple (internal) usb connected storage. The problem I'm having now is that I can't seem to find any actual high speed usb sticks. They all proclaim high speeds, but usually turn out to be ~30 mb/s - much lower than the 60 mb/s (480 mbit/s / 8 ) I understand USB 2.0 is at - no ? Can anyone enlighten me as to why no USB sticks seem to go past that low bar or alternatively point me in the direction of some actual high speed usb sticks ? Any help is greatly appreciated :) Cheers!

  • How can I replicate Google Page Speed's lossless image compression as part of my workflow?

    - by Keefer
I love that Google's Page Speed is able to losslessly compress a lot of my images, but I'd love to make it part of my workflow, prior to uploading a site and making it live. Is there anything I can run locally to give me the same lossless compression? I currently export images from Export For Web from Photoshop, and use a little application called PNGCrusher to reduce file size of PNGs. I'd love to find a faster way though than saving out and replacing the individual images from Page Speed's results.

  • Typing tutor games with good playablity

    - by matt wilkie
Are there any linux typing tutor games which are enjoyable games in their own right? I'm a computer professional, but have never learned to type properly. I also don't want my kids to pick up my bad habits! The kids are okay with TuxTyping, for a time. Something like Typing of the Dead sounds great, but is Windows only, and as far as I can tell one of a kind. I also don't want the young'uns hooked on first person shooters just yet. So are there any quality typing games for a range of ages?

  • Inconsistent mouse cursor status while typing

    - by Jim
I have noticed that when I type in some programs, Text Editor, Terminal, Bluefish, Gnome Baker, etc. the mouse cursor disappears while I am typing. In other programs like Firefox and LibreOffice, it does not. I am not an application programmer, but I imagined it has to do with their cross-platform nature and the way they are compiled or the toolkits they use. Then I noticed that Gnome-Do behaves the same way, the cursor stays on screen while typing. Why is there inconsistent handling of the mouse cursor, while typing, across different applications? Thank you.

  • Remove Clutter from the Opera Speed Dial Page

    - by Asian Angel
Do you want to clean up the Speed Dial page in Opera so that only the thumbnails are visible? Today we show you a couple of tweaks that will make it happen. Speed Dial Page The search bar and text at the bottom take up room and add clutter to the look and feel of Opera’s Speed Dial page. Changing the Settings Two small tweaks to the config settings will clean it all up. To get started type opera:config into the address bar and press enter. Type “speed” into the quick find bar and look for the Speed Dial State entry. Change the 1 to 2 and click save. You will see the following message concerning the changes…click OK. Next type “search” into the quick find bar and look for the Speed Dial Search Type entry. Remove all of the text in the blank and click save. Once again you will see a message about the latest change that you have made. At this point you may need to restart Opera for both changes to take full effect. There will be a noticeable difference in how the Speed Dial page looks afterwards and is much cleaner without the Search bar and text field. You will also still be able to access the right click context menu just like before. Conclusion If you have been looking to get a cleaner and less cluttered Speed Dial page in Opera, then these two little hacks will get the job done! • Is PLC speed affected by mixing different devices?

    - by CFP
Hello everyone! At home, I have 4 PLC devices for my home network. Two of them are 85Mb/s powerlan PLC adapters, while the others are 10Mbps powerlan PLC adapters. I have not been able to determine reliably whether the presence of the 10Mb/s ones impact on the speed of the 85Mb/s ones. Is it possible that the bitrate is limited by the slowest devices on the network? Thanks!

  • Internet Speed for Webserver

    - by René
That should be kind of dumb question in comparison to all other questions here. What minimum upload and download is required for a small home webserver with one webpage? Or is there a schema that shows me the required upload and download speed for a number of visitors? We talk about a Windows Server, but not really sure this is relevant. That's just for a practice project.

  • Determining speed (class) of USB on PC

    - by Thomas Matthews
Is there a method for determining the speed of a USB port on a Windows XP PC, without using a USB protocol analyzer? I'm looking for something simple, such as looking at the Device Manager. I would like to hook up some USB equipment to a USB 2.0 port, rather than the slower USB 1.0 or 1.1.

  • What is more important for speed: Processor Speed or RAM?

    - by Jake
I am about to buy a desktop, I narrowed it down to two choices, both are virtually identical (even in terms of price) but one has 4 GB of RAM and a 3.7 GHZ CPU the other has 8GB of RAM and a 2.7 GHZ CPU Which is the better choice for speed? Also as a side question, what is better: a 2GB stick of DDR2 RAM or a 4GB stick of DDR3?
