• User interface for messaging app for WP7

  I have a Message.xaml file that should display a recipient field and a message field like this: The user can add multiple recipients, so the TextBox should be flexible in height. I managed this with following code: <TextBox FontSize="24" Margin="0,0,80,532" Name="absenderField" AcceptsReturn="True" TextWrapping="Wrap" Height="auto" MinHeight="30" MaxWidth="375"> </TextBox> Now the recipient field is growing in height when text is added that does not fit into it. The other TextBox is for the message. The markup is the same as for the recipient field, just the height is different. The first problem is, that when the recipient field growes it goes over the message field but the message field should be aligned at the bottom of the recipient field and move down. how can I achieve that? Now the other problem. When I enter a lot of text to make the message field grow, the recipient field will grow too. This is very strange. Why does this happen? • GetHashCode Method reliability in Silverlight/WP7.1

  I am attempting to hash and keep(the hash) an object of type IEnumerable<anotherobject> which has about a 1000 entries. I'll be generating another such object, but this time I'd like to check for any changes in the values of the entries using the hash codes of the two objects. Basically, I was wondering if GetHashCode() is apt for this, both from a performance perspective and reliability perspective (getting different values for different object values and same values for same object values, always). If I have to override it, what would be a good way to do so, does it always depend on the type of anotherobject and what Equals means when comparing two anotherobjects? Is there a generic way to do it? This concern is because my object can be quite big.

• WP7 - Cancelling ContextMenu click event propagation

  I'm having a problem when the Silverlight toolkit's ContextMenu is clicked while it is over a UIElement that has registered a Tap event GestureListener. The context menu click propagates to the underlying element and fires its tap event. For instance, say I have a ListBox and each ListBoxItem within it has registered both a ContextMenu and a Tap GestureListener. Assume that clicking context menu item2 is supposed to take you to Page1.xaml, while tapping on any of ListBox items themselves is supposed to take you to Page2.xaml. If I open the context menu on item1 in the ListBox, then context menu item2 is on top of ListBox item2. When I click on context menu item2 I get weird behavior where the app navigates to Page1.xaml and then immediately to Page2.xaml because the click event also triggered the Tap gesture for ListBox item2. I've verified in the debugger that it is always the context menu that receives the click event first. How do I cancel the context menu item click's routed event propagation so it doesn't reach ListBox item2? Thanks for your help!

  I'm trying to use Windows Phone 7 Silverlight ZXing Barcode Scanning Library but I'm having some problems. • WP7 databinding displays int but not string?

  Whenever I test my app.. it binds the data from Note class and displays it if it isn't a string. But for the string variables it wont bind. What am I doing wrong? • Architectural Design for a Data-Driven Silverlight WP7 app

  I have a Silverlight Windows Phone 7 app that pulls data from a public API. I find myself doing much of the same thing over and over again: In the UI, set a loading message or loading progress bar in place of where the content is Get the content, which may be already in memory, cached in isolated file storage, or require an HTTP request If the content can not be acquired (no network connection, etc), display an error message If the content is acquired, display it in the UI Keep the content in main memory for subsequent queries The content that is displayed to the user can be taken directly from a data source, such as an ObservableCollection, or it may be a query on a data source. I would like to factor out this repetitive process into a framework where ideally only the following needs to be specified: Where to display the content in the UI The UI elements to show while loading, on failure, and on success The URI of the HTTP request How to parse the HTTP response into the data structure that will kept in memory The location of the file in isolated storage, if it exists How to parse the file contents into the data structure that will be kept in memory It may sound like a lot, but two strings, three FrameworkElements, and two methods is less than the overhead that I currently have. Also, this needs to work for however the data is maintained in memory, and needs to work for direct collections and queries on those collections. My questions are: Has something like this already been implemented? Are my thoughts about the topic above fundamentally wrong in some way? Here is a design I'm thinking of: There are two components, a View and a Model. The View is given the FrameworkElements for loading, failure, and success. It is also given a reference to the corresponding Model. The View is a UserControl that is placed somewhere in the UI. The Model a class that is given the URI for the data, a method of how to parse the data, and optionally a filename and how to parse the file. It is responsible for retrieving the data and notifying the View whenever the current status (loading/fail/success) changes. If the data downloaded from the network is different from the cache, the network data takes precedence. When the app closes or is tombstoned, the model writes the data to the cache. How does that sound?

  I have created the DateTimePicker control. Now i want to add localization Support with this. I have followed the below steps. Created CustomControls.de-DE.resx inside the ResourceFolder. added some commonly used strings in that resx file changed the access modifier to Public added <SupportedCulture>de-DE;</SupportedCulture> in the csproj file. set System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = new System.Globalization.CultureInfo("de-DE"); in sample.cs file before IntializeComponent(). my DateTimevalue was " 2 Day(s): 3 Hr (s): 5 Min(s) : 32 Sec (s) Getting only default language that is english. What i did wrong? Please help me anyone. Is anything i missed?

• Theme-aware XAML resources in a WP7 project

  I'm making a Windows Phone 7 application and I'm a bit confused with dark/light themes. With a panorama, you very often set a background image. The issue is it's very hard to make a picture which is right for both dark and light themes. How are we supposed to proceed? Is there a way to force a dark/light theme for a panorama? This will avoid making theme-specific panorama background pictures. Then how do I do? I found xaml files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Design. If this is a right way to proceed, how can I import them for my panorama? Or if there's no way (or if it's wrong) to force a dark/light theme: how to write conditional XAML to set correct resources? Now I have the following XAML which is fine with the dark theme: <ImageBrush x:Key="PageBackground" ImageSource="Resources/PageBackground.png" Stretch="None" /> <ImageBrush x:Key="PanoramaBackground" ImageSource="Resources/PanoramaBackground.png" Stretch="None" /> But when I use a light theme, black controls and black texts are hard to read with my dark background pictures. So I made different pictures that I can use this way: <ImageBrush x:Key="PageBackground" ImageSource="Resources/PageBackgroundLight.png" Stretch="None" /> <ImageBrush x:Key="PanoramaBackground" ImageSource="Resources/PanoramaBackgroundLight.png" Stretch="None" /> Now my issue is to make XAML conditionnal to declare the right thing depending on the current theme. I found no relevant way on the Internet. I would prefer not to use code or code-behind for that because I believe XAML is able to do this (I just don't know how).

  I'm trying to create some application for Windows Phone = 7.1 During plannin my work and specyfiong technical requirements I've come across one problem. I wan't to have free application with basic functionality. And then it should be extendable with some non-free extensions (dlls?, databases?, SaaS?) Is it possible at the moment to use some MS api/app/etc. to be able to publish such extensions and sell them? What is the best way to do this if there is more than one solution?   When I am using the BackgroundAudioPlayer in my Windows Phone 7 application, it takes a lot of time to load the first time I want to play a song. Is there any way of preinitializing the BackgroundAudioPlayer before playing the first track, so that when I start playing, it starts right along? I have googled it, but no luck. I am just using BackgroundAudioPlayer.Instance when I e.g. want to play, pause, stop etc an audiotrack. Is there something other i could do to fix this? Thanks in advance!

  Hello, I'm trying to return the last 7 days of data from an xml web service but with no luck. Could someone please explain me to how I would accomplish this? • WP7 How to use a Storyboard

  I wish to stop using the DispatcherTimer to show animations as that is extremely unpredictable. Instead, I want to start using a Storyboard as that is apparently the best and efficient way to animate controls. I have tried searching for Tutorials but have not, unfortunately, stumbled on one yet. Can anyone please advice me where I can begin? For example, "moving an image across the screen" and then "moving many images at the same time whilst rotating them". Any help is highly appreciated.

The second time I press it, it does not fire. Third press, fires. Fourth press, does not fire. Etc. Originally I had it bound to a command but that was behaving the same way. (I put a Debug.WriteLine() in the event handler so I know when it fires.) Any ideas? It's really odd that the click event only fires every other time.

  I have been reading up on "Cloud computing" on here and still not getting it. Basically I want to develop for the WP7 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff402531%28v=VS.92%29.aspx#AppPlat_Overview_Arch Now it mentions everything as being in the "Cloud". Is any server just a cloud? If i have a WCF service or wsdl on my server. Can I consider myself that "Cloud"? Or is there something that a server emits that checks whether or not it is a cloud?

Silverlight 4 – Productivity Power Tools and EF4 Ryan Alford found a very interesting bug associated with EF4 and the Productivity Power Tools, and the way to get out of it is just weird as well. Silverlight 4 – Toolkit and Theming Ryan Alford also had a problem adding a theme from the Toolkit, and what all you might have to do to get around this one.... Part 4 of 4 : Tips/Tricks for Silverlight Developers. Michael Crump has part 4 of his series on Silverlight Development tips and tricks. This is numbers 16 through 20 and covers topics such as Version information, Using Lambdas, Specifying a development port, Disabling ChildWindow Close button, and XAML cleanup.
