  • Use Shakespeare-text and external file

    - by Adam
How can I convert the below example to use an external file instead of the embedded lazy text quasi quotes? {-# LANGUAGE QuasiQuotes, OverloadedStrings #-} import Text.Shakespeare.Text import qualified Data.Text.Lazy.IO as TLIO import Data.Text (Text) import Control.Monad (forM_) data Item = Item { itemName :: Text , itemQty :: Int } items :: [Item] items = [ Item "apples" 5 , Item "bananas" 10 ] main :: IO () main = forM_ items $ \item -> TLIO.putStrLn [lt|You have #{show $ itemQty item} #{itemName item}.|] This is from the yesod online book.

  • A question about making a C# class persistent during a file load

    - by Adam
Apologies for the indescriptive title, however it's the best I could think of for the moment. Basically, I've written a singleton class that loads files into a database. These files are typically large, and take hours to process. What I am looking for is to make a method where I can have this class running, and be able to call methods from within it, even if it's calling class is shut down. The singleton class is simple. It starts a thread that loads the file into the database, while having methods to report on the current status. In a nutshell it's al little like this: public sealed class BulkFileLoader { static BulkFileLoader instance = null; int currentCount = 0; BulkFileLoader() public static BulkFileLoader Instance { // Instanciate the instance class if necessary, and return it } public void Go() { // kick of 'ProcessFile' thread } public void GetCurrentCount() { return currentCount; } private void ProcessFile() { while (more rows in the import file) { // insert the row into the database currentCount++; } } } The idea is that you can get an instance of BulkFileLoader to execute, which will process a file to load, while at any time you can get realtime updates on the number of rows its done so far using the GetCurrentCount() method. This works fine, except the calling class needs to stay open the whole time for the processing to continue. As soon as I stop the calling class, the BulkFileLoader instance is removed, and it stops processing the file. What I am after is a solution where it will continue to run independently, regardless of what happens to the calling class. I then tried another approach. I created a simple console application that kicks off the BulkFileLoader, and then wrapped it around as a process. This fixes one problem, since now when I kick off the process, the file will continue to load even if I close the class that called the process. However, now the problem I have is that cannot get updates on the current count, since if I try and get the instance of BulkFileLoader (which, as mentioned before is a singleton), it creates a new instance, rather than returning the instance that is currently in the executing process. It would appear that singletons don't extend into the scope of other processes running on the machine. In the end, I want to be able to kick off the BulkFileLoader, and at any time be able to find out how many rows it's processed. However, that is even if I close the application I used to start it. Can anyone see a solution to my problem?

  • Dealing with Windows line-endings in Python

    - by Adam Nelson
I've got a 700MB XML file coming from a Windows provider. As one might expect, the line endings are '\r\n' (or ^M in vi). What is the most efficient way to deal with this situation aside from getting the supplier to send over '\n' :-) Use os.linesep Use rstrip() (requiring opening the file ... which seems crazy) Using Universal newline support is not standard on my Mac Snow Leopard - so isn't an option. I'm open to anything that requires Python 2.6+ but it needs to work on Snow Leopard and Ubuntu 9.10 with minimal external requirements. I don't mind a small performance penalty but I am looking for the standard best way to deal with this.

  • A problem regarding dll inheritance

    - by Adam
Hello all I have created a dll that will be used by multiple applications, and have created an installer package that installs it to the program files, as well as adds it to the Global Assembly Cache. The dll itself uses log4net, and requires a xml file for the logging definitions. Therefore when the installer is run, the following files get copied to the install directory within program files: The main dll that I developed - The Log4Net.dll - the Log4Net.xml file I am now experiencing a problem. I have created a test console application for experimentation. I have added my dll as a reference, and set the 'local copy' flag to false. When I compile the test console exe however, I noticed that it has copied the log4net.dll and log4net.xml files to the bin directory. And when running the test console, it appears that it will only work if the log4net.dll is in the same directory as the exe. This is dispite the fact that the test console application does not use log4net, only the dll that was added as a reference does. Is there some way to have it so that the log4net.dll & xml files used will be the ones that were installed to the program files, rather than any application needed to copy over local copies? The applications that will be using my dll will not be using log4net, only the dll that they are referencing uses it. Many thanks

  • Is it possible to programmatically control c# health monitoring without using the web.config file?

    - by Adam
I have developed my own custom provider for the health monitoring; however, I use parameters in the constructor and this is not allowed when using the health monitoring from the web.config file. Does anyone know if I can turn on/off the monitoring and have it watch properly through code (possibly in my global.asax file on application startup). Or, is it possible for me to create my own watcher that will do the same thing as the health monitor. Or, finally - can I just pass variables from the web.config setup (i'm not familiar with the public token part of the provider type declaration). Thanks in advance

  • Should Python import statements always be at the top of a module?

    - by Adam J. Forster
PEP 08 states: Imports are always put at the top of the file, just after any module comments and docstrings, and before module globals and constants. However if the class/method/function that I am importing is only used in rare cases, surely it is more efficient to do the import when it is needed? Isn't this: class SomeClass(object): def not_often_called(self) from datetime import datetime self.datetime = datetime.now() more efficient than this? from datetime import datetime class SomeClass(object): def not_often_called(self) self.datetime = datetime.now()

  • Tab Content Does Not Refresh After First Click of Like Button

    - by Adam
I've implemented a very simple "like guard" for a facebook tab, and am running into an issue with my test users. Multiple testers are reporting that when they open a tab and click the "like" button, they do not always get a page refresh (so the like guard does not disappear until they do a manual reload). This is using facebook's like button at the top of the page, not one I've coded up myself. As a sanity check, I enabled some simple logging on my server and have been able to recreate the issue - I hit "like" or "unlike" but there seems to be no request made to my index.php page, so definitely no refresh happening. I'm aware of this old bug https://developers.facebook.com/bugs/228778937218386 but this one seems different. For starters, after the first click of the "like" button, if I just continue clicking unlike/like/.... then the refresh happens automatically, as expected. What's especially weird is that if I reload the page after the first failed refresh, the refreshes start working again as expected, ie the first update to my like status triggers a page refresh. Some possibly (?) relevant info: My Tab is part of a test page, and is unpublished I am only using http hosting for the tab content, since my https isn't set up yet So far I've just tested with other admins - so maybe user role affects this? Curious to see if anyone has run into this issue before.

  • Reload Document into Google Docs Viewer (Clear Cache)

    - by Adam
Google Docs Viewer (http://docs.google.com/viewer) creates a cache of a document after the first viewing. To see what I mean, try the following: Upload file.pdf to your server (i.e., http://example.com). Visit http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://example.com/file.pdf Upload a new file to replace file.pdf (but use the same name). Revisit http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://example.com/file.pdf. Google Docs Viewer still shows the old file.pdf. Anyone know how to correct this? (I have already tried clearing browser cache, switching browsers, and logging in with a different google account to view the link.)

  • What is the best way to organize Java code since you can't pass by reference?

    - by Adam
I'm learning how to code in Java after after coming from C. In C I always separated everything into individual functions to make the code easier to follow and edit. I was trying to do this in java but now since I realized that you can't use pointers, I am a bit confused as to what the best way to do this is. So for example I want to have a method that creates four alerts for me. So I pass it an alert builder that can then create the alerts. I can return them in an array, but in my code I already have the alerts individually named, and I would like to keep it that way so I wouldn't need to refer to them as alert[1], alert[2]... etc. So that means I would have to rename them, which would add additional code which would probably be longer than the code in the actual method! Am I thinking about this the right way? Is there anything I can do?

  • Convert SQL to LINQ to SQL

    - by Adam
Hi I have the SQL query with c as ( select categoryId,parentId, name,0 as [level] from task_Category b where b.parentId is null union all select b.categoryId,b.parentId,b.name,[level] + 1 from task_Category b join c on b.parentId = c.categoryId) select name,[level],categoryId,parentId as item from c and I want to convert it to LINQ to SQL, yet my LINQ skills are not there yet. Could someone please help me convert this. It's the with and union statements that are making this a bit more complex for me. Any help appreciated.

  • Target Framework does not change in Visual Studio 2010

    - by Adam Driscoll
When I change the target framework of any project in Visual Studio 2010 it does not actually change the System assembly references. For example if I target v2.0 and check the properties of System and System.Data I can see that they are still both v4.0. If i change the target to v3.5, System stays at v4.0 but System.Core changes to v3.5. Because of this I am truly not targeting anything except v4.0.

  • moving between states I get an error in Flex.

    - by Adam
ArgumentError: Error #2025: The supplied DisplayObject must be a child of the caller. so i have a function that runs in state1 and has a while(myCanvas.rawChildren.numChildren > 0){ myCanvas.rawChildren.removeChildAt(0); } //this code is definitely the problem.... I can move to state2, but when I move back to state1 i get the error. why? the function that has the while loop only runs when something is searched in state1, so why is it running when coming back from state2?

  • Parse Domain from a given URL in T-SQL

    - by Adam N
I fount this answer, but wanted to expand on the question and couldn't find any solutions here on stack or through searching google. Substring domainname from URL SQL Basically the link above solves my problem with a simple URL like parsing "www.google.com" with the result of google. What I am looking for to expand on that is the solution from the link above doesn't help with url's like 'www.maps.google.com' that just returns maps. WHat I would like is to have it return 'google' from the url 'www.maps.google.com' or return 'example' from 'www.test.example.com'. If anyone has a solution to this, I would greatly appreciate it. Update: To be more specific I will also need parsing on second level domains etc. 'www.maps.google.com.au' to return 'google' Here is my Sql function. CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[parseURL] (@strURL varchar(1000)) RETURNS varchar(1000) AS BEGIN IF CHARINDEX('.', REPLACE(@strURL, 'www.','')) > 0 SELECT @strURL = LEFT(REPLACE(@strURL, 'www.',''), CHARINDEX('.',REPLACE(@strURL, 'www.',''))-1) Else SELECT @strURL = REPLACE(@strURL, 'www.','') RETURN @strURL END

  • Rails - Preventing users from contributing to website when there score is too low - callback / obser

    - by adam
A User can add a Sentence directly on my website, via twitter or email. To add a sentence they must have a minimum score. If they don't have the minimum score they cant post the sentence and a warning message is either flashed on the website, sent back to them via twitter or email. So I'm wondering how best to code this check. Im thinking a sentence observer. So far my thoughts are in before_create score_sufficient() - score ok = save - score too low = do not save In the case of too low i need to return some flag so that the calling code can then fire off teh relevant warning. What type of flag should I return? False is too ambiguous as that could refer to validation. I could raise an exception but that doesn't sound right or I could return a symbol? Is this even the right approach? What's the best way to code this?

  • Python required variable style

    - by Adam Nelson
What is the best style for a Python method that requires the keyword argument 'required_arg': def test_method(required_arg, *args, **kwargs: def test_method(*args, **kwargs): required_arg = kwargs.pop('required_arg') if kwargs: raise ValueError('Unexpected keyword arguments: %s' % kwargs) Or something else? I want to use this for all my methods in the future so I'm kind of looking for the best practices way to deal with required keyword arguments in Python methods.

  • How to determine where a Mailitem is being opened from in Outlook 2007 using VSTO 2005 SE

    - by Adam
I have an Outlook 2007 Add-in in VSTO 2005 SE that allows users to save e-mails into our document management system. From within our system users are able to open e-mails they have previously saved. However, when doing so I need to try and prevent them from saving them again. I am trying to figure out how to determine if the Mailitem being opened is coming from the Outlook e-mail client or from an external source. I know that normally the EntryId Property of the Mailitem is null or empty string when a Mailitem has not been previously saved in Outlook, however, it seems like when a Mailitem is being opened from within our system the EntryID is not null.

  • GetAccessControl error with NTAccount

    - by Adam Witko
private bool HasRights(FileSystemRights fileSystemRights_, string fileName_, bool isFile_) { bool hasRights = false; WindowsIdentity WinIdentity = System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent(); WindowsPrincipal WinPrincipal = new WindowsPrincipal(WinIdentity); AuthorizationRuleCollection arc = null; if (isFile_) { FileInfo fi = new FileInfo(@fileName_); arc = fi.GetAccessControl().GetAccessRules(true, true, typeof(NTAccount)); } else { DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo(@fileName_); arc = di.GetAccessControl().GetAccessRules(true, true, typeof(NTAccount)); } foreach (FileSystemAccessRule rule in arc) { if (WinPrincipal.IsInRole(rule.IdentityReference.Value)) { if (((int)rule.FileSystemRights & (int)fileSystemRights_) > 0) { if (rule.AccessControlType == AccessControlType.Allow) hasRights = true; else if (rule.AccessControlType == AccessControlType.Deny) { hasRights = false; break; } } } } return hasRights; } The above code block is causing me problems. When the WinPrincipal.IsInRole(rule.IdentityReference.Value) is executed the following exception occurs: "The trust relationship between the primary domain and the trusted domain failed.". I'm very new to using identities, principles and such so I don't know what's the problem. I'm assuming it's with the use of NTAccount? Thanks

  • Safest LAMP encrypt method

    - by Adam Kiss
Hello, what is PHP's safest encrypt/decrypt method, in use with MySQL - to store let's say passwords? Of course, not for portal purposes. I want to do little password (domain/mysql/ftp...) storage for whole team online, but I don't want really to endanger our clients' bussinesses. Hash can't be used for obvious reasons (Doesn't really make sense to run rainbow tables every time :D). Any idea?

  • Creating a web application that can be extended by plugins/modules

    - by Adam Pope
I'm currently involved with developing a C# CMS-like web application which will be used to standardise our development of websites. From the outset, the idea has been to keep the core as simple as possible to avoid the complexity and menu/option overload that blights many CMS systems. This simple core is now complete and working very well. We envisisaged that the system would be able to accept plugins or modules which would extend the core functionality to suit a given projects needs. These would also be re-usable across projects. For example, a basic catalogue and shopping basket might be needed. All the code for such extensions should be in seperate assemblies. They should be able to provide their own admin interfaces and front-end code from this library. The system should search for available plugins and give the admin user the option to enable/disable the feature. (This is all very much like WordPress plugins) It is crucial that we attack this problem in the correct way, so I'm trying to perform as much due dilligence as possible before jumping in. I am aware of the Plugin Pattern (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms972962.aspx) and have read some articles on it's use. It seems reasonable but I'm not convinced it's necessarily the correct/best technique for this situation. It seems more suited to processing applications (image/audio manipulation, maths etc). Are there any other options for achieving this kind of UI extensibility functionality? Or is the plugin pattern the way to go? I'd also be interested if anybody has links to articles that explain using the plugin pattern for this purpose?

  • How to get rid of g++ hash_map deprecation warning?

    - by Adam
When I compile a c++ application I'm writing that makes use of hash_map, I get this warning on g++ 4.3.2: You are using the deprecated header . To eliminate this warning, use an ANSI-standard header file or use hte -Wno-deprecated compiler flag. 9> #include <ext/hash_map> What include replaces this? I've searched for a while on google, and can't find anything except for people having similar problems, but no solution.

  • Guru of the Week 2 no match for the operator==

    - by Adam
From Guru of the Week 2. We have the function: string FindAddr(const list<Employee> l, string name) { for( list<Employee>::const_iterator i = l.begin(); i != l.end(); i++) { if( *i == name ) // here will be compilation error { return (*i).addr; } } return ""; } I added dummy Employee class to that: class Employee { string n; public: string addr; Employee(string name) : n(name) {} Employee() {} string name() const { return n; } operator string() { return n; } }; And got compilation error: error: no match for ‘operator==’ in ‘i.std::_List_iterator<_Tp>::operator* [with _Tp = Employee]() == name’ It works only if add operator== to Employee. But, Herb Sutter wrote that: The Employee class isn't shown, but for this to work it must either have a conversion to string or a conversion ctor taking a string. But Employee has a conversion function and conversion constructor as well. GCC version 4.4.3. Compiled normally, g++ file.cpp without any flags. There should be implicit conversion and it should work, why it doesn't?

  • DOM class injection in PHP

    - by Adam Kiss
idea Via jQuery, I was able to mark all :first-child and :last-child elements in document (well, almost all :)) with class first which could I later style (i.e. first li in ul#navigation would be easily adressable as ul#navigation .first). I used following code: var $f = $('*:first-child') $f.addClass('first'); var $l = $('body *:last-child') $l.addClass('last'); question Now, my question is if it's possible to do the same via php, so non-JS users/gadgets could have the same effects and additional styling and also it would be less overkill on browser. So, is it possible to capture output, parse it as html and inject this class easily in php?

  • Formatting numbers by tokens with php

    - by Adam D
I'm looking for a way to format numbers using "tokens". This needs to be conditional (for the first few leading characters). Example: <?php $styles=array('04## ### ###','0# #### ####','13# ###','1800 ### ###'); format_number(0412345678); /*should return '0412 345 678'*/ format_number(0812345678); /*should return '08 1234 5678'*/ format_number(133622); /*should return '133 622'*/ format_number(1800123456); /*should return '1800 123 456'*/ ?> Incase you haven't guessed, my use of this is to format Australian phone numbers, dependent on their 'type'. I have a PHP function that does this, but it is ~114 lines and contains a lot of repeated code. Can anyone help?
