  Hi All, I've started a new project where I'm writing a WPF business application, but I'm having trouble with the design. The database was easy to put together, but I'm not sure how I have to go about the designing the application itself. The main thing that I find hard is the code design. I've decided that the MVVM pattern is very applicable for this application, but how do I go about deciding what classes to build and how things go from there? Does anyone have some guidelines I could use? This is a standard business application that just stores and retrieves data. Some data queries will also need to be performed.

• Sending the variable's content to my mailbox in Python?

  I have asked this question here about a Python command that fetches a URL of a web page and stores it in a variable. The first thing that I wanted to know then was whether or not the variable in this code contains the HTML code of a web-page: from google.appengine.api import urlfetch url = "http://www.google.com/" result = urlfetch.fetch(url) if result.status_code == 200: doSomethingWithResult(result.content) The answer that I received was "yes", i.e. the variable "result" in the code did contain the HTML code of a web page, and the programmer who was answering said that I needed to "check the Content-Type header and verify that it's either text/html or application/xhtml+xml". I've looked through several Python tutorials, but couldn't find anything about headers. So my question is where is this Content-Type header located and how can I check it? Could I send the content of that variable directly to my mailbox? Here is where I got this code. It's on Google App Engines.

  I have a table which stores test results like this: user | score | time -----+-------+------ aaa | 90% | 10:30 bbb | 50% | 9:15 *** aaa | 85% | 10:15 aaa | 90% | 11:00 *** ... What I need is to get the top 10 users: user | score | time -----+-------+------ aaa | 90% | 11:00 bbb | 50% | 9:15 ... I've come up with the following SELECT: SELECT * FROM (SELECT user, score, time FROM tests_score ORDER BY user, score DESC, time DESC) t1 GROUP BY user ORDER BY score DESC, time LIMIT 10 It works fine but I'm not quite sure if my use of ORDER BY is the right way to pick the first row of each group of sorted records. Is there any better practice to achieve the same result? (I use MySQL 5)

Now am retrieving data from address page to main page by using a session variable which stores a data table of values. Two different Session variables are this way used for permanent and temporary addresses.. Using session variable degrades the performance i know..   How would one go about writing a query that selects items 2000-2010 out of a collection of 10000 objects in the data store. I know that it can be done like this in GQL: select * from MyObject limit 10 offset 2000 According to the documentation, when using an offset the engine will still fetch all the rows, only not return them, thus making the query perform in a way that corresponds linearly with the value of offset. Is there any better way? Such as using a pseudo ROWNUM column like one could do in other types of data stores.

When I excute this in ruby, in result set the sent_date is stores as (Tue Apr 20 00:00:00 UTC 2010) messages = Message.find_by_sql(sql) puts messages[0]['sent_date'] puts statement prints "Tue Apr 20 00:00:00 UTC 2010" how to get same date format in mysql result and ruby result set.   I run a sports program where i have a master roll of who is in which class in excel. I want to link this to a database in access that stores the other information about each athlete, e.g. address, parents name, school, medical details. I want to be able to add names to class in the excel speadsheet and have this automatically generate a record for that person in access. There also needs to be some failsafe for athletes that are in multiple classes. I was also doing class roles as pivot tables out of the access database so i need to code for classes and also have this allow for athletes in multiple classes/disciplines.

  I've currently adding a bit of functionality that manages holiday lettings on top of a CMS that runs on PHP and MySQL. The CMS stores the property details on a couple of tables, and I'm adding a third table (letting_times) that will contain information about when people are staying at the property. Basic functionality would allow the user to add new times when a guest is staying, edit the times that the guest is staying and remove the booking if the guest no longer wants to stay at the property. Right now the best way that I can think of updating the times that the property is occupied is to delete all the times contained in the letting_times database and reinsert them again. The only other way that I can think to do this would be to include the table's primary key and do an update if that is present and has a value, otherwise do an insert, but this would not delete rows of data if they are removed. Is there a better way of doing this?

  With the following bit of code: $builder = ORM::factory('branch')->where('institution_id', $this->institution->id)->orderby('name'); I need to first execute: $count = $builder->count_all(); Then I need to execute: $rs = $builder->find_all($limit, $offset); However, it appears that when I execute the first query the stored query parameters are cleared so that a fresh query can be executed. Is there a way to avoid having the parameters cleared or at least copy them easily without having to reach directly into the Database driver object that stores the query parameters and copy them out? We are using Kohana 2.3.4 and upgrading is not an option.

  Hi, I noticed that my app is very slow sometimes, so I've done some tests. It's a very simple web app. One servlet gets some parameters than stores them. Everything's fine except one thing. It takes too long to get a parameter for the first time. It doesn't matter which parameter I try to get, but for the first time it is very slow. The strange thing is this doesn't happen always. Sometimes getting a parameter for the first time is not slow. My code looks like this request.getParameter("paramName"); request.getParameter("paramName2"); request.getParameter("paramName3"); Getting "paramName" is slow. Getting the others is very fast. By slow I mean : 200-800 millisec By very fast I mean: ~0 millisec (in the code snippet, I didn't write the performance test, but I'm using System.currentTimeMillis())

• concatenating strings from two different rows in a table

  Hello, We are attempting to rework the SQL in a product. The product stores XML in a table as follows: XML_STORAGE - UID IDENTITY - PARENT_ID INTEGER - SEQ INTEGER - XML VARCHAR(3800) The current way of doing this is as follows: Retrieve all ROWS for PARENT_ID = n. Then go over the fetched rows in the code and concatenate the XML strings into one large XML before parsing. The SEQ column is used to ORDER the result so the XML strings can be concatenated properly. Hopefully that is clear. What we are attempting to do is rework this so we can use a SQL variant to retrieve the whole string and just fetch one row back from DB2. Is there a DB2 function that will allow us to concatenate the string in all of these rows into one large string in the resultset. How would such a SQL look. Please let me know. • Securing WinForms Application suggestions

  I've been looking for a simple key/license system for our users. Its partly to stop piracy (avoid users from sharing the application around) and the other half to track the number of 'licensed users' we have. I have already read a few good suggestions on SO but I'm curious as to how people have implemented the 30 day evaluation criteria. Do you generate a key that stores the date somewhere and do a comparison each time or is it a little more complicated - deleting the file/removing the registry shouldn't deactivate. Are there any example implementations out there that can give me a head start? The irony is that our PM doesn't want to license a third-party system to do it for us. This is for a Windows Forms application.

• How do I sync Dreamweaver site definitions across 2 computers?

  I use Dreamweaver on my laptop and Desktop PC and frequently change between them. I keep all my sites synced using Syncplicity (similar to Dropbox, which indecently I also use) I want my site definitions to be synced across the two computers. If I add a new site on one computer I want it to appear on the other one. I know I can export all sites on one computer and then get Syncplicity to sync the files to the other computer at which point I can import them. However this relies on me remembering to do this each time I add a new site, and it's also quite time consuming. As far as I can tell, Dreamweaver (at least upto CS4- not sure about CS5) stupidly stores the site definitions in the registry. I really don't know why they do this- if they stored it in xml files then I could easily sync the information. Does anyone know if what I am asking is possible?

  I have a std::multiset which stores elements of class A. I have provided my own implementation of operator< for this class. My question is if I insert two equivalent objects into this multiset is their order guaranteed? For example, first I insert a object a1 into the set and then I insert an equivalent object a2 into this set. Can I expect the a1 to come before a2 when I iterate through the set? If no, is there any way to achieve this using multiset?

• .NET Framework - Possible memory-leaky classes?

  Just the other day I was investigating a memory leak that was ballooning the app from ~50MB to ~130MB in under two minutes. Turns out that the problem was with the ConcurrentQueue class. Internally, the class stores a linked list of arrays. When an item is dequeued from the ConcurrentQueue, the index in the array is bumped, but the item remains in the array (i.e. it's not set to null). The entire array node is dropped after enough enqueues/dequeues, so it's not technically a leak, but if storing only a few large objects in the ConcurrentQueue, this can get out of hand fast. The documentation makes no note of this danger. I was wondering what other potential memory pitfalls are in the Base Class Library? I know about the Substring one (that is, if you call substring and just hold onto the result, the whole string will still be in memory). Any others you've encountered?

  I have written a simple forum in PHP using PostgreSQL. The forum consists of a number of subforums (or categories, if you like) that contain topics. I have a table that stores when was the last time a user visited a topic. It's something like this: user_id, topic_id, timestamp. I can easily determine what topics should be marked as unread by comparing the timestamp of the last topic reply with the timestamp of the last user visit. My question is: how do I efficiently determine what subforums (categories) should be marked as unread? All I've come up with is this: every time a user visits a topic, update the visit timestamp and check if all the topics from the current subforum are read or unread. If they are all read, mark the subforum as read for the user. Else, mark it as unread. But I think there must be another way. Thank you in advance.

  I'm trying to handle proximity search for a basic store locater in Django. Rather than haul PostGIS around with my app just so I can use GeoDjango's distance filter, I'd like to use the Spherical Law of Cosines distance formula in a model query. I'd like all of the calculations to be done in the database in one query, for efficiency. An example MySQL query from The Internet implementing the Spherical Law of Cosines like this: SELECT id, ( 3959 * acos( cos( radians(37) ) * cos( radians( lat ) ) * cos( radians( lng ) - radians(-122) ) + sin( radians(37) ) * sin( radians( lat ) ) ) ) AS distance FROM stores HAVING distance < 25 ORDER BY distance LIMIT 0 , 20; The query needs to reference the Zipcode ForeignKey for each store's lat/lng values. How can I make all of this work in a Django model query?

  I have an object that stores some data in a list. The implementation could change later, and I don't want to expose the internal implementation to the end user. However, the user must have the ability to modify and access this collection of data. • how create a sql database fom a stongly typed dataset

  I'm looking for an easy way to transfer a database schema I have developed inside visual studio as a strongly typed dataset (xsd file) into a corresponding sql server database. Silly me I assumed the process would be forthright, but I can't find out how to do it. I assume I could duplicate the tables column by column, but that seems so error prone. Does anyone know of a way to perform the schema transfer like this? Maybe a tool to translate the xsd file into a corresponding sql server ddl file? Final thought once I have the schema transferred moving data around between the two data stores will be straight forward, its just getting the schemas synced that has me stumped... Thanks, Keith

• How do I read the cache of Chrome and Firefox programmatically on the Mac?

  Background I want to access the cache of Chrome and Firefox in my Cocoa application. I need to get the HTML for pages accessed recently. Safari is a piece of cake - all this information is available in SQLite data stores, but not so in Chrome and Firefox. The Problem For Firefox, the cache is in /Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/xxx.default/Cache with filenames _CACHE_001_ _CACHE_002_ _CACHE_003_ and _CACHE_MAP_ For Chrome, the cache is in /Library/Caches/Google/Chrome/Default/Cache with filenames data_0 data_1 data_2 and data_3 What I've tried The only article I can find that sheds any light on what format these caches are in is here. It recommends a Cache Viewer tool, but doesn't explain how one might do this programmatically. Questions Is there any way of reconstructing this data using command line tools or the Cocoa framework? Or is it much too low level? Is there another way of getting at the HTML of recent web pages that I don't know about?
