I am thinking of getting a macbook 13", and was hoping they would be putting faster chips on them.
Is this on the horizon or there is no point in waiting for the i5/i7 chips?
Hey,
I'm thinking about the architecture for a new Webserver. Would having Varnish as a cache in front of Nginx as a reverse-proxy and serving static files in front of apache for all heavy lifting be a good idea?
I'm going to run php and ruby on rails applications.
Will there be too much overhead passing php requests to apache through two other processes?
Thanks a lot!
I have an SD card with a corrupt filesystem, so wanted to clone it and attempt recovery on the copy (just in case of problems). I was thinking that dd-ing it Linux would be a sensible way to go, but don't really want to experiment in this situation. So if anyone has done this before then it would be good to know the exact approach that works.
In case it helps, I have Ubuntu, OSX and Windows machines available.
TIA,
Paul.
Thinking of using a wine bottle with a cork that barely sticks out.
Anyhow, I want to put in a GPS, a battery and a transmitter and to be able to collect position about every minute or so.
Off-the-shelf components are preferred. What are my options as far as hardware and software choices?
Thank you in advance!
I want to install Python 2.6, but as it's still experimental for Debian Linux, I'm wondering what my best course of action is. Is the right idea to install it into /usr/local for my system and then update the python sym link in /usr/bin to point to that version? Are there other considerations or ways to do it I should be thinking about?
Hi,
I'm just thinking about famous internet services like facebook or twitter manage fast growing databases.
Which could be a solution for this kind of problem?
What about ids ? I read there is a limit in MySQL - 18446744073709551615 - in unsigned bigint... whow would you generate and manage a bigger value ?
Just a theoric problem, but i'm curious about a possible solution.
Thank you!
Any intelligent way to partition 1TB and be prepared for resizing/adding/deleting partitions?
I was thinking about LVM, but as far as i remember, Windows7 can't be installed on logical volume right?
For now my plan is:
- ~150GB for Windows7 and other stuff (VisualStudio..., maybe I'll split it 100/50 or something like that) - simple NTFS
- 850GB = LVM - disk for linux (Ubuntu) and other stuff virtual machines etc.
I'm mostly interested in how and what tools should I use to get easy in maintain partitions for both systems.
Anyone know if it is possible to get a non-domain Server to pick-up it's updates from a domain included WSUS server?
Just thinking about Hyper-V host Servers, in a single server environment clearly this cannot be part of the domain because at the time the VM Host boots the Domain Controllers is not available. However is there any way to make this Hyper-V Host collect it's updates from the WSUS server.
It's that time of year to start thinking about what conferences we want to beg, plead, borrow and steal to get to go to this year. We all like a good conference, but are generally limited in the funds available to go to them - if we are provided any - so we need to be at least a little picky.
What are the conferences that you are really excited about this year, and what tracks do you think will be the most beneficial to a sysadmin?
I have windows 7 (professional OEM) installed in bootcamp.
Not thinking about it, I activated it running in fusion.
now in fusion everything is fine, but when i run it directly it says it needs activation.
I read that one actually needs to activate it directly first, and afterwards in fusion.
How can I fix this situation?
I have created an image of a floppy disk by executing:
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/home/myFloppy.img
My floppy disk is no more working now. So I am thinking now if it's possible to write the image of that floppy to a flash drive and then i may boot my machine from the flash drive.
My machine's BIOS has the option of 'Boot from USB'.
Kind of a crazy question, but...
I am looking into getting a backup internet connection. I have DSL and ClearWire can now reach 4-5 meg speeds. I was thinking about getting that service as a backup connection, but I am wondering if I do that if I can combine the bandwidth to basically double my up and down speed?
Will this work, and anything special I would need to do?
Can anyone confirm if the RVS4000 has multi-WAN and policy routing support? Manual doesn't really say yes or no, I'm thinking no, knowing Cisco but want to confirm before I recommend another firewall.
I was thinking about logging into Pandora at work like I do at home, but I'm concerned about sucking up all of the available bandwidth on the network with something that's not strictly work-related. I don't have a thorough technical understanding of how streaming content like Internet radio is delivered, so I don't really know how to measure the impact.
Can anyone offer any perspective on how much bandwidth Internet radio consumes relative to normal Internet browsing? Is there any way to measure how much I'm using for a specific site like Pandora?

Hi here
I'm planing to buy a laptop or mini-laptop and use a Ubuntu OS on it. The thing is that i really need it to use it many hours on batery mode. I'm thinking that i'll have troubles in finding the right rivers and my batery to be waisted. What other problems can I have?
Also, I wana use the laptop or mini-laptop outside/outdoor. What display technology is most recommended for that?
I have several shares on my Win7 machine. I need them to disappear from the network (and stay gone across reboots), without my having to actually remove the shares (because they need to re-appear in a week).
Is there something I can disable/stop on my machine (I'm thinking a service?) that will get this done? There are no network shares I need to keep available to the network (during this time).
Hi there
I'm thinking to install Ubuntu on my laptop just to have grub in order to boot from the EISA partition. What do you think? Do you think that might be a good idea? How will affect grub or ubuntu the EISA partition ?
TY
Around here the clusters (not hyper-v clusters) are typically configured as n+1, so they are asking me to create a n+1 hyper-v r2 clusters. These will configured with both csv's and live migration and managed via scvmm r2. My thinking is that its a waste in having a node sitting there idle. In my opinion it would be better to have headroom left over for what would traditionally the +1 server spread amongst the N nodes. Anybody have an opinion on this.
thanks
I have set up a single laptop (I have 10 of these exact models) for a demonstration next week. I want to copy the configuration (Fedora 13 with the software for demonstration) to the 9 other machines. Is this simply a dd operation? I may be thinking that I require more than what is really needed.
Thanks for the assistance!
I recently made a number of changes to my Asterisk dialplan and would like to validate these changes before I commit. I am thinking more from a "write code" - "compile" - "debug" approach.
I am very new to Asterisk and am trying to build my dialplan slowly but the server is already in use (by the spouse) so I'd like to minimize interruptions as much as possible.
If I can at-least verify that the code is correct, I can then debug in Asterisk as calls are taking place.
I have created a user which has specific privileges to access the shares on our WD MyBookLive Network drive (ie it requires a password to connect), however after connecting once Windows seems to remember the password (or at least for the rest of the session). How can I make it so it is necessary to require a password every time the user connects to the drive or makes some change on Windows? I am particularly thinking of Cryptolocker and other variants of "ransomeware" which will try and connect to the drive and encrypt it.
Does anyone if is any player which supports to take notes while I play a movie or something?
I can use notepad, but I have to use mouse or alt-tab extensively in order to switch from notepad to the player to pause the movie.
I was thinking that the guys who add subtitles are using this kind of feature. Any idea?
many thanks
For my personal experience, mysql replication is fragile.
I know that there area many things not to do beacuse they could break replication, but we are humans and the error could always occur.
So I was thinking... is there a way to enforce mysql replication? Something that prevents queries that are dangerous for the replication to be runt?
In other words I'm searching for something that saves replication even if I accidentally run evil queries.
In the course of doing stuff on the computer, the mouse always moves, by itself, to the bottom left of the screen - I'd say several times in the course of an hour. I thought this might be an issue with the driver, so I re-installed the driver, but the problem continued. Then thinking that the mouse is faulty, I replaced my Microsoft Wheel Mouse with a Dell mouse. The problem still continues.
How can I fix this problem?
