  • Advantages/disadvantages of browser-based interface vs. graphics

    - by Josh
Hello everyone, I'm in the design phase for a desktop-based application. Because of the nature of this particular application, I believe it would benefit greatly from a web-based approach (i.e., allowing a user to interface with the application through a browser running in kiosk mode) in order to leverage the simplicity of HTML/CSS/JS and the availability of many great JS interface plugins. Does taking this approach (rather than coding in a native or cross-platform graphics library) come with any gotchas?

  • How do I define and standardize units in my 3D app?

    - by Omega
I'm starting to design my object graph for an OpenGL ES 1.1 on Android. What's advisable when it comes to actually drawing my triangles when it comes to controlling their size? Should I store all the vertices in units relative to each other and then multiply them by a value I pass during a draw(GL10 gl)? Would this approach have any impact when it comes time to do frustum culling?

  • What programming language is this?

    - by Hutch
We're trying to script a CAD program, and this is the example for controlling the date in our design slugs, but I don't even know what language it is to know what to do with it. ! LIBEDATE def &d$ &ret$ set &d$ = rstr(`/`,` `,#d$); set &ret$ = word(&d$,2),`/`,word(&d$,1),`/`,subs(word(&d$,3), -2, 2)

  • C++ Virtual Constructor, without clone()

    - by Julien L.
I want to perform "deep copies" of an STL container of pointers to polymorphic classes. I know about the Prototype design pattern, implemented by means of the Virtual Ctor Idiom, as explained in the C++ FAQ Lite, Item 20.8. It is simple and straightforward: struct ABC // Abstract Base Class { virtual ~ABC() {} virtual ABC * clone() = 0; }; struct D1 : public ABC { virtual D1 * clone() { return new D1( *this ); } // Covariant Return Type }; A deep copy is then: for( i = 0; i < oldVector.size(); ++i ) newVector.push_back( oldVector[i]->clone() ); Drawbacks As Andrei Alexandrescu states it: The clone() implementation must follow the same pattern in all derived classes; in spite of its repetitive structure, there is no reasonable way to automate defining the clone() member function (beyond macros, that is). Moreover, clients of ABC can possibly do something bad. (I mean, nothing prevents clients to do something bad, so, it will happen.) Better design? My question is: is there another way to make an abstract base class clonable without requiring derived classes to write clone-related code? (Helper class? Templates?) Following is my context. Hopefully, it will help understanding my question. I am designing a class hierarchy to perform operations on a class Image: struct ImgOp { virtual ~ImgOp() {} bool run( Image & ) = 0; }; Image operations are user-defined: clients of the class hierarchy will implement their own classes derived from ImgOp: struct CheckImageSize : public ImgOp { std::size_t w, h; bool run( Image &i ) { return w==i.width() && h==i.height(); } }; struct CheckImageResolution; struct RotateImage; ... Multiple operations can be performed sequentially on an image: bool do_operations( std::vector< ImgOp* > v, Image &i ) { std::for_each( v.begin(), v.end(), /* bind2nd(mem_fun(&ImgOp::run), i ...) don't remember syntax */ ); } int main( ... ) { std::vector< ImgOp* > v; v.push_back( new CheckImageSize ); v.push_back( new CheckImageResolution ); v.push_back( new RotateImage ); Image i; do_operations( v, i ); } If there are multiple images, the set can be split and shared over several threads. To ensure "thread-safety", each thread must have its own copy of all operation objects contained in v -- v becomes a prototype to be deep copied in each thread.

  • Objects With No Behavior

    - by Patrick Donovan
I've been teaching myself object oriented programming and I'm thinking about a situation where I have an object "Transaction", that has quite a few properties to it like account, amount, date, currency, type, etc. I never plan to mutate these data points, and calculation logic will live in other classes. My question is, is it poor Python design to instantiate thousands of objects just to hold data? I find the data far easier to work with embedded in a class rather than trying to cram it into some combination of data structures.

  • RDoc template customization

    - by ximus
Hi, how can I change my default RDoc template for my gem environment. I'd like my gem server to look like this RDoc: http://getcloudkit.com/api/ and I've seen that design around so this shouldn't be so difficult.

  • Deriving from a component and implementing IDisposable properly

    - by PaulH
I have a Visual Studio 2008 C# .NET 2.0 CF project with an abstract class derived from Component. From that class, I derive several concrete classes (as in my example below). But, when I go to exit my Form, though the Form's Dispose() member is called and components.Dispose() is called, my components are never disposed. Can anybody suggest how I can fix this design? public abstract class SomeDisposableComponentBase : Component { private System.ComponentModel.IContainer components; protected SomeDisposableComponentBase() { Initializecomponent(); } protected SomeDisposableComponentBase(IContainer container) { container.Add(this); Initializecomponent(); } private void InitializeComponent() { components = new System.ComponentModel.Container(); } protected abstract void Foo(); #region IDisposable Members bool disposed_; /// Warning 60 CA1063 : Microsoft.Design : Ensure that 'SomeDisposableComponentBase.Dispose()' is declared as public and sealed.* public void Dispose() { // never called Dispose(true); GC.SuppressFinalize(this); } protected virtual void Dispose(bool disposing) { // never called if (!disposed_) { if (disposing && (components != null)) { components.Dispose(); } disposed_ = true; } base.Dispose(disposing); } #endregion } public SomeDisposableComponent : SomeDisposableComponentBase { public SomeDisposableComponent() : base() { } public SomeDisposableComponent(IContainer container) : base(container) { } protected override void Foo() { // Do something... } protected override void Dispose(bool disposing) { // never called base.Dispose(disposing); } } public partial class my_form : Form { private SomeDisposableComponentBase d_; public my_form() { InitializeComponent(); if (null == components) components = new System.ComponentModel.Container(); d_ = new SomeDisposableComponent(components); } /// exit button clicked private void Exit_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.Close(); } /// from the my_form.designer.cs protected override void Dispose(bool disposing) { if (disposing && (components != null)) { // this function is executed as expected when the form is closed components.Dispose(); } base.Dispose(disposing); } } *I note that FX-Cop is giving me a hint here. But, if I try to declare that function as sealed, I get the error: error CS0238: 'SomeDisposableComponentBase.Dispose()' cannot be sealed because it is not an override Declaring that function an override leads to: 'SomeDisposableComponentBase.Dispose()': cannot override inherited member 'System.ComponentModel.Component.Dispose()' because it is not marked virtual, abstract, or override Thanks, PaulH

  • Pass a captured named regular expression to URL dictionary in generic view

    - by Trent Jurewicz
I am working with a generic view in Django. I want to capture a named group parameter in the URL and pass the value to the URL pattern dictionary. For example, in the URLConf below, I want to capture the parent_slug value in the URL and pass it to the queryset dictionary value like so: urlpatterns = patterns('django.views.generic.list_detail', (r'^(?P<parent_slugs>[-\w])$', 'object_list', {'queryset':Promotion.objects.filter(category=parent_slug)}, 'promo_promotion_list'), ) Is this possible to do in one URLConf entry, or would it be wiser if I create a custom view to capture the value and pass the queryset directly to the generic view from my overridden view?

  • ANTLR, Dynamic variables

    - by JTS
Hello, I have an ANTLR grammar that can parse and evaluate simple expressions like 1+2*4, etc. What I would like to do is to evaluate expressions like 2+$a-$b/4 where the $ variables are dynamic variables, that come from an external source and are continuously updated. Is there any design pattern on how to do this using ANTLR, best practices, etc? Shall I "substring" the $a with the updated value ($a - 4.34) A nicer way to do this? Thx

    - by sh00
I have a SQL Server 2008 database with 300 tables. The application I have to design is an Windows Forms app, .NET 3.5, C#. Which is the best way to work with Linq-to-SQL ? I intend to make a datacontext for each business entity. Is there any problem ? I need to know if this way of working with Linq-to-SQL has any disadvantage or can create performance issues ? Thanks.

  • SVG Parser in Javascript

    - by jsight
I believe that at one point, I saw a TinySVG implementation that worked in the browser, using the canvas element as the backend. I found a few sites that appeared to indicate it was at http://fuchsia-design.com/CanvaSVG/, however, that site appears to no longer exist. Is this project (or a similar one) still on the web anywhere?

  • Dealing with personal failure

    - by codeelegance
A while ago I was given the task of updating and extending the functionality of a software project. I was given a year to make the needed changes working solo. A month into development I came to the conclusion that it would take longer to change the existing product than to rewrite it from the ground up. I'd never attempted a complete rewrite so I talked with my boss about it and he was thrilled with the idea. I'm a fan of agile development but had never had the opportunity to take advantage of all of the prescribed practices so when I set to work I tried to incorporate as many as I could. I didn't have direct access to the customer and my coworkers (non-programmers) knew the business domain but were already so busy they didn't really have time to participate in design meetings so I resigned to working in the dark and occasionally calling one of them over to my desk to get feedback on my progress. I used TDD and refactored mercilessly and even tried taking a domain driven design approach. Things went well for a while. As the deadline came closer and the complexity of the project grew my productivity start slipping. I found myself cutting corners and ignoring the practices I had established as the pressure increased to meet the deadline. I also started working late nights and weekends to keep up with the load. In the end it made little difference how hard I worked. The project missed its deadline and what was completed wasn't enough to give to the customer. I had failed. Not only had I not finished on time but the previous version had sat untouched for almost a year so it wouldn't be of any help. Luckily we had another product that offered some of the same functionality. My boss decided to cancel the project entirely and moved all our orphaned customers to the other product. I spent weeks (along with everyone else at the company) manning the phones providing technical support for those customers. After it was all over, my boss was gracious enough not to fire me for nearly ruining the company. I was moved to the other product and have been trying to redeem myself ever since. Where did I go wrong? Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of defeat? How did you recover?

  • creative way for implementing Data object with it's corespanding buisness logic class in java

    - by ekeren
I have a class that need to be serialized (for both persistentcy and client-server communication) for simplicity reasons lets call the classes Business a BusinessData and I prefix for their Interfaces. All the getter and setter are delegated from Business class to BusinessData class. I thought about implementing IBusinessData interface that will contain all the getter and setters and IBusiness interface that will extend it. I can either make Business extend BuisnessData so I will not need to implement all getter and setter delegates, or make some abstract class ForwardingBusinessData that will only delegate getter and setters. Any of the above option I loose my hierarchy freedom, does any of you have any creative solution for this problem... I also reviewed DAO pattern: http://java.sun.com/blueprints/patterns/DAO.html

  • Android Bottombar with two buttons having different backgrounds and a common background for two butt

    - by cppdev
Hi, I have a linear layout in my main.xml which has a listview. Now I want to create a bottom bar below listview. Bottombar has a background image and two buttons with their individual background images. I want to put these two buttons on common background image. I have read that this can be achieved using FrameLayout. But since I am using LinearLayout as base layout in my main.xml, is there any way to this design using linearlayout ?

  • Detecting a stale Mutex

    - by sum1stolemyname
Is there any technique or tool available to detect this kind of a deadlock during runtime? picture this in a worker thread (one of several, normally 4-6) try WaitForSingleObject(myMutex); DoSTuffThatMightCauseAnException; Except ReleaseMutex(myMutex); end; or more generally is there a design-pattern to avoid these kind of bugs? I coded the above code in the little hous after a longer hacking run

  • Javascript in chrome plugin has syntax error

    - by Cyclone
chrome.tabs.executeScript(null, {code:"$.each(selectValues, function(key='" + timestamp + "', value='Custom') { $('#expire'). append($(\"<option></option>\"). attr(\"value\",key). text(value)); });"}); It says that the first line has a syntax error, and the WebKit inspector shows odd highlighting patterns. What's wrong with that? A friend thinks I need to escape some characters somewhere. Thanks for the help!
