  • Display all images from outside web root folder using PHP

    Hello, I want to display all images that are stored outside my web root folder. Please help me. I am only able to display one image repeatedly. For example, if I have 5 images in my folder, only one image is displayed on my browser 5 times. Please help me on this. I've been working on this problem for over a month now. I'm a newbie. Help.     There are two main open source .net Amazon S3 libraries. Three Sharp LitS3 I am currently using LitS3 in our MVC demo project, but there is some criticism about it. Has anyone here used both libraries so they can give an objective point of view.   • Struggling with ASP.NET MVC auto-scaffolder template

    I'm trying to write an auto-scaffolder template for Index views. I'd like to be able to pass in a collection of models or view-models (e.g., IQueryable<MyViewModel>) and get back an HTML table that uses the DisplayName attribute for the headings (th elements) and Html.Display(propertyName) for the cells (td elements). Each row should correspond to one item in the collection. A property Html is automatically created for me when the view is created, but this HtmlHelper applies to the whole collection. I need to somehow create an itemHtml object that applies just to the current item in the foreach loop. I'm not sure how to do this, however, because the constructors for HtmlHelper don't take a Model object. How do I solve these two problems?

  • A scheme for expiring downloaded content?

    I am going to offer a web API service that allows users to download and "rent" content for a monthly subscription fee. The API will either be open to everyone or possibly just select parties (not sure yet). Each developer must agree to a license, and they receive a developer key for their person. Each software application will have its own key as well. So then end-users will download the software which will interact with my service's API. Each user will have a key for each application as well (probably using OAuth). Content will be cached on first download and accessible offline via just the third-party application that cached the content. If a user cancels their subscription, I plan on doing the following: Deactivate the user's OAuth key for all applications. Do not allow the user's account to download new content via the API (and subsequently any software that uses the API). Now, the big question is: how do I make content expire if they cancel their subscription? If they cancel, they should not have access to content anymore. Here are ideas I've thought of (some of these are half-solutions, not yet fully fleshed out): Require that applications encrypt downloaded content using the user's OAuth key, making it available to only the application. This will prevent most users from going to the cache directory and just copying and keeping files. Update the user's key once a month, forcing content to re-cache on a monthly basic. Users could then access content for a month after they cancel their subscription. Require applications to "phone home" [to the service] periodically and check whether the user's subscription has terminated. If so, require in the API developer license that applications expire cache. If it is found that applications do not comply, their keys (and possibly keys for all developers) are permanently deactivated as a consequence. One major worry is that some applications may blatantly ignore constraints of the license. Is it generally acceptable to rely on applications abiding by the licensing constraints? Bad idea? Any other ideas? Maybe a way to make content auto-expire after x days? Something else? I'm open to out-of-the-box ideas.

And one more thing, I googled a bit on this, from which I went here: Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site and it suggests put scripts at the bottom, but traditionally many people put it in <head> tag which is above the <body> tag. I know it's NOT a rule but many prefer it that way. If you don't believe it, just view source of this page! And tell me what's the better style for best performance.

    Hey guys, First of all, I am a php developer and most of .net is alien to me which is why I am posting here! I just migrated over a site from one set of webhosting to another. The whole site is written in .net. None of the site is database driven so most of it works, except for the contact form. The output on the site simple states there was an error with "There has been an error - please try to submit the contact form again, if you continue to experience problems, please notify our webmaster." This is just a simple message it pops out of it gets to the "catch" part of the email function.   • Soften a colour border, maybe with a gradient, programmatically.

    I have a narrow header in corporate colour, bright red, with the content below on a just-off-white background. Ive tried softening the long line where these colours meet using border type divs with intermediate backgrounds, but I think I need the original type curved gradient 'area transitions'. I could copy the 1024px wide, and too narrow (vertically), header gif from their web site, and chop it up for eight border images, but that seems clumsy, and I'm looking for something I can apply anywhere, without needing images. I am able to do round borders in the x-y plane, but I'm curious as to how I can apply a gradient to any chosen colour transition. The extra divs I'm using as border elements above and below '#top-section' arose when I was toying with making many divs for one bordered element.   • Modular GWT design concerns

    Hi, I have a couple of questions regarding a modular GWT based application framework. I have some ideas about them but being new to the field of web development I feel they are far from ideal. I'd appreciate a few comments and suggestions in this regard. Here are my questions: I am developing a framework which will allow third parties to embed GWT applications into our website and do some communication with them using simple iFrame postMessage. All these third party modules are going to use our SDK which is also GWT based. The problem arises that even though all the modules will be using the same codebase there is going to be a massive overheard in the amount of duplicate Javascript code (i.e. our common SDK code base which is quite large) being downloaded on the client's machine. This is highly redundant and problematic, not only due to the sheer size of duplicate code but, also due to the fact that subsequent updates of the SDK would require the modules to be recompiled which is going to create a DLL hell kind of scenario in the long run. What is the best way of doing this kind of thing? Is there a way where I can have some static GWT code (i.e. the SDK) and the dynamic GWT module refers to it (even if lies on a different domain) and it all work happily? The other part of the problem lies in providing robust scripting front end to the SDK. At first it appears to be trivial since Javascript itself is a scripting language. However, I do not know how to load and call a piece of pure Javascript code at runtime? I am willing to put restrictions on the target Javascript (i.e. having a function main and unique namespace or something). Furthermore the Javascript will come as a string from a database and not as a full URL. If its doable in Javascript how does one get this right in GWT i.e. forcing the compiler to emit a certain function in the generated Javascript? This I believe can be lesser of a problem by having a stub Javascript with all the right requirements which just loads up a GWT generated Javascript. Is any of this possible at all? I generally hate to be this verbose but I hope to find a quick solution to the problem as its holding up my progress. I'd highly appreciate any comments, suggestions and experiences.

    From the perspective of an end user, what makes a software great rather than just good or functional? What are some fundamental principles that can shift the way a software is used and perceived? What are some of the little finishing touches that help put an application over the top? I'm in the later stages of developing a web app and I'm looking for ideas or concepts that I may have missed. If you have specific examples of software or apps that you absolutely love, please share the reasons or features that make it special. Keep in mind that I'm looking for examples that directly affect the end user, but not necessarily just UI suggestions. Here are some of the principles and little touches I'm trying to use: Keep the UI as simple as possible. Remove absolutely everything that isn't necessary. Use progressive disclosure when more information can be needed sometimes but isn't needed all the time. Provide inline help and useful error messages. Verbs on buttons wherever possible. Make anything that's clickable obvious. Fast, responsive UI. Accessibility (this is a work in progress). Reusable UI patterns. Once a user learns a skill, they will be able to use it in multiple places. Intelligent default settings. Auto-focusing forms when filling out the form is the primary action to be taken on the page. Clear metaphors (like tabs) and headings indicating location within the app. Automating repetitive tasks (with the ability to disable the automation). Use standardized or accepted metaphors for icons (like an "x" for delete). Larger text sizes for improved readability. High contrast so that each section is distinct. Making sure that it's obvious on every page what the user is supposed to do by establishing a clear information hierarchy and drawing the eye to the call to action. Most deletions can be undone. Discoverability - Make it easy to learn how to do new tasks. Group similar elements together.

    I'd like my application to query a csv file from a secure website. I have no experience with web programming so I'd appreciate detailed instructions. Currently I have the user login to the site, manually query the csv, and have my application load the file locally. I'd like to automate this by having the user enter his login information, authenticating him on the website, and querying the data. The application is written in C# .NET. The url of the site is: https://www2.emidas.com/default.asp. I've tested the following code already and am able to access the file once the user has already authenticated himself and created a manual query. I've angle bracketed the real userid and password. I'd like to be able to pass in a collection of models or view-models (e.g., IQueryable<MyViewModel>) and get back an HTML table that uses the DisplayName attribute for the headings (th elements) and Html.Display(propertyName) for the cells (td elements). Each row should correspond to one item in the collection. A property Html is automatically created for me when the view is created, but this HtmlHelper applies to the whole collection. I need to somehow create an itemHtml object that applies just to the current item in the foreach loop. I'm not sure how to do this, however, because the constructors for HtmlHelper don't take a Model object. How do I solve these two problems?

  • How do I create a safe local development environment?

    I'm currently doing web development with another developer on a centralized development server. In the past this has worked alright, as we have two separate projects we are working on and rarely conflict. Now, however, we are adding a third (possible) developer into the mix. This is clearly going to create problems with other developers changes affecting my work and vice versa. To solve this problem, I'm thinking the best solution would be to create a virtual machine to distribute between the developers for local use. The problem I have is when it comes to the database. Given that we all develop on laptops, simply keeping a local copy of the live data is plain stupid. I've considered sanitizing the data, but I can't really figure out how to replace the real data, with data that would be representative of what people actually enter with out repeating the same information over and over again, e.g. everyone's address becomes 123 Testing Lane, Test Town, WA, 99999 or something. Is this really something to be concerned about? Are there tools to help with this sort of thing? I'm using MySQL. Ideally, if I sanitized the db it should be done from a script that I can run regularly. If I do this I'd also need a way to reduce the size of the db itself. (I figure I could select all the records created after x and whack them and all the records in corresponding tables out so that isn't really a big deal.) The second solution I've thought of is to encrypt the hard drive of the vm, but I'm unsure of how practical this is in terms of speed and also in the event of a lost/stolen laptop. If I do this, should the vm hard drive file itself be encrypted or should it be encrypted in the vm? (I'm assuming the latter as it would be portable and doesn't require the devs to have any sort of encryption capability on their OS of choice.) The third is to create a copy of the database for each developer on our development server that they are then responsible to keep the schema in sync with the canonical db by means of migration scripts or what have you. This solution seems to be the simplest but doesn't really scale as more developers are added. How do you deal with this problem?

So image 1 is displayed, fades to image 2 etc. then the whole thing loops again.     Microsoft is sponsoring a series of Web Camps this summer. They’re a series of free two day events being held worldwide, and I’m really excited about being taking part. The camp is targeted at a broad range of developer background and experience. Content builds from 101 level introductory material to 200-300 level coverage, but we hit some advanced bits (e.g. MVC 2 features, jQuery templating, IIS 7 features, etc.) that advanced developers may not yet have seen. We start with a lap around ASP.NET & Web Forms, then move on to building and application with ASP.NET MVC 2, jQuery, and Entity Framework 4, and finally deploy to IIS. I got to spend some time working with James before the first Web Camp refining the content, and I think he’s packed about as much goodness into the time available as is scientifically possible. The content is really code focused – we start with File/New Project and spend the day building a real, working application. The second day of the Web Camp provides attendees an opportunity to get hands on. There are two options: Join a team and build an application of your choice Work on a lab or tutorial James Senior and I kicked off the fun with the first Web Camp in Toronto a few weeks ago. It was sold out, lots of fun, and by all accounts a great way to spend two days. I’m really enthusiastic about the format. Rather than just listening to speakers and then forgetting everything in a few days, attendees actually build something of their choice. They get an opportunity to pitch projects they’re interested in, form teams, and build it – getting experience with “real world” problems, with all the help they need from experienced developers. James got help on the second day practical part from the good folks that run Startup Weekend. Startup Weekend is a fantastic program that gathers developers together to build cool apps in a weekend, so their input on how to organize successful teams for weekend projects was invaluable. Nick Seguin joined us in Toronto, and in addition to making sure that everything flowed smoothly, he just added a lot of fun and excitement to the event, reminding us all about how much fun it is to come up with a cool idea and just build it.   • Split horizon, route filtering, and having RIPv2 announce a non-attached route to host...

    Routers A, B & C live at 10.1.1.1, 10.1.1.2 and 10.1.1.3 on a /24 metro Ethernet subnet. Each router also has its own private subnet on another interface. Router B's private subnet links thru a firewall to a 10.20.20.0 network at another organization. Router B redistributes to A and C several static routes for hosts on 10.20.20.0. However, a new host 10.20.20.5/32 must be reached via a different path that goes through router C. I know that C can advertise this host-based route with no problem, but I'd like to keep all my 10.20.20.x static routes in one place. So, how can B tell A via RIPv2 to send packets for 10.20.20.5/32 to C? So far it looks like I need no ip split-horizon on router B's 10.1.1.2 interface, perhaps because B has already learned from C other routes with a next hop of 10.1.1.3. But how does RIPv2 split horizon with no auto-summary and network 10.0.0.0 really work? If B learns a route to ANY 10.x.x.x network or host from A or C, is that enough for split horizon to keep it from redistributing ip route 10.20.20.5 255.255.255.255 10.1.1.3? And if I want to suspend split horizon only for this one new host, how do I filter out the mess of regurgitated routes that B advertises when I try no ip split-horizon? Thanks much.
