• Microsoft Azure News: Capturing VM Images

You had to sysprep the VM, and clone the data disks. This was slow, prone to errors, and stopped you from being productive. No more! A new option, called Capture, allows you to easily select a VM, running or not. The capture will copy the OS disk and data disks and create a new image out of it automatically for you. This means you can now easily clone an entire VM without affecting productivity.  To capture a VM, simply browse to your Virtual Machines in the Microsoft Azure management website, select the VM you want to clone, and click on the Capture button at the bottom. A window will come up asking to name your image. It took less than 1 minute for me to build a clone of my server. And because it is stored as an image, I can easily create a new VM with it. So that’s what I did… And that took about 5 minutes total.  That’s amazing…  To create a new VM from your image, click on the NEW icon (bottom left), select Compute/Virtual Machine/From Gallery, and select My Images from the left menu when selecting an Image. You will find your newly created image. Because this is a clone, you will not be prompted for a new login; the user id/password is the same. • Ubuntu boots to orange screen after install

  I have a problem in which I boot my computer and everything works normally, I see a purple screen with various partitions to select such as my Windows 7 and Ubuntu partitions. When I select the Ubuntu one, my computer boots to an orangish screen and plays what sounds like a drum sound once. Then nothing happens and I have to reboot my computer because the computer is stuck at this orange screen.   We all know there have been some updates to Windows Azure, and one of the biggest I would say is the capability of being able to remote into the “OS level” of the image running a role.  And I am not talking about VM Role, I am talking about a Web Role for example. As developers we use Visual Studio, and when we are getting ready to deploy a project, we have the option of enabling this. Here is how: 1.  We publish our Project 2. On the Deployment dialog, provide all the details for your account, and before clicking OK, click on Configure Remote Desktop connections. 3.  Enable connections and the rest of the configuration.  Now, here is where there is an extra set of steps.  The first thing to know: The certificate used here is different from the other certs you have in place.  I created a new one, the went into certmgr.msc, then to Personal, then I selected the cert I just created.  Did a right-click, then All Tasks > Export.  Because what is needed is a pfx package, make sure when exporting you select to export the private key. 4. Click OK, on the Remote Desktop Configuration screen, now before you click OK on the Deployment, you will need to visit the Azure Portal. And perform the following: Go to your hosted services. Then with the service available, select the Certificates folder location. Then, select Add Certificate from the toolbar (more like Azure Portal Ribbon) Provide the details to upload the recently create pfx file. That will create the Certificate. Click OK on the deployment dialog, this kick off the deployment process. 5. Now, we need to go to the Windows Azure Portal.  Here we will select the Web Role deployed and Configure RDP. 6. Time to test.  Click on the Instance (not the role), this will make the Remote Access Connect Button available.  A file will start the process to be downloaded too 7. You will then be prompted for the credentials you configured. 8.  Validate connectivity … 9. Open IIS Manager … From here on, this is a way to manage and work with your Instance.

  Cross join consists to perform a Cartesian product of two sets or sequences. The following example shows a simple Cartesian product of the sets A and B: A (a1, a2) B (b1, b2) => C (a1 b1,            a1 b2,            a2 b1,            a2, b2 ) is the Cartesian product's result. Linq to Sql allows using Cross join operations. Cross join is not equijoin, means that no predicate expression of equality in the Join clause of the query. To define a cross join query, you can use multiple from clauses. Note that there's no explicit operator for the cross join.   With version 3.0 the SSMS 2014 is fully supported. Since this is a new major version you'll eventually need a new license. Please check the EULA to see when. As a thank you for your patience with this release, everyone that bought the SSMS Tools Pack after April 1st, the release date of SQL Server 2014, will receive a free upgrade. You won't have to do anything for this to take effect. First thing you'll notice is that the UI has been completely changed. It's more in line with SSMS and looks less web-like. Also the core has been updated and rewritten in some places to be better suited for future features. Major improvements for this release are: Window Connection Coloring Something a lot of people have asked me over the last 2 years is if there's a way to color the tab of the window itself. I'm very glad to say that now it is. In SSMS 2012 and higher the actual query window tab is also colored at the top border with the same color as the already existing strip making it much easier to see to which server your query window is connected to even when a window is not focused. To make it even better, you can not also specify the desired color based on the database name and not just the server name. This makes is useful for production environments where you need to be careful in which database you run your queries in. Format SQL The format SQL core was rewritten so it'll be easier to improve it in future versions. New improvement is the ability to terminate SQL statements with semicolons. This is available only in SSMS 2012 and up. Execution Plan Analyzer A big request was to implement the Problems and Solutions tooltip as a window that you can copy the text from. This is now available. You can move the window around and copy text from it. It's a small improvement but better stuff will come. SQL History Current Window History has been improved with faster search and now also shows the color of the server/database it was ran against. This is very helpful if you change your connection in the same query window making it clear which server/database you ran query on. The option to Force Save the history has been added. This is a menu item that flushes the execution and tab content history save buffers to disk. SQL Snippets Added an option to generate snippet from selected SQL text on right click menu. Run script on multiple databases Configurable database groups that you can save and reuse were added. You can create groups of preselected databases to choose from for each server. This makes repetitive tasks much easier New small team licensing option A lot of requests came in for 1 computer, Unlimited VMs option so now it's here. Hope it serves you well.

  In Part 1 I showed how to create and publish a simple Orchestration demo. Now we’ll finish configuring it in the admin console and test it. Open the BizTalk Server 2009 Administration Console, and expand BizTalk Server 2009 Administration, then Applications. You should have an entry for OrchestrationPortDemo – expand it as well. First, we’ll add the Receive Port – the place that we’ll drop the test file. Right-click on Receive Ports and select New One-way Receive Port. On the General tab, name it InputPort, then click over to Receive Locations.   Click New to add a new location. Your receive location can be FTP, SQL, WCF, SharePoint, or many other choices, but for this demo we’ll add a File location. Click the Configure button and set a receive folder (something like “C:\PortDemo\”) and a file mask (stick with “*.xml” for now) and click OK three times to create your Receive Port.   Next we’ll create the Send port – the location where BizTalk will drop the file. Right-click on Send Ports and choose New Static One-way Send Port. Give it an appropriate name, and configure the FILE Transport Properties as shown:   Click OK twice and your Send Port will be created. Now we’ll configure the Orchestration Bindings. Click on Orchestrations, then right-click the orchestration itself and select Properties. Select the Bindings tab. Choose BizTalkServerApplication as the host, and select the Send and Receive ports you previously created, as shown:   Now it’s time to fire everything up. Right-click on the send port you created and click Start. Once the Status column displays “Started”, click on Receive Locations and Enable the Receive Location previously created. Finally, start the Orchestration. Now, time to test! Create a simple xml file like: <root>    <Node1>Test</Node1>    <Node2>Test</Node2> </root> And drop it into the C:\PortDemo folder. After a couple of seconds the file should disappear – this indicates BizTalk has picked it up for processing. Look in the C:\PortDemo\Output folder and you should see an xml file with a GUID for a name, like {7C50104F-FC3E-4A49-B2FA-4F560A37636D}.xml. Open it to verify that it matches your input file. Practically, this demo doesn’t do a whole heck of a lot, but it shows you the basics for building, publishing and running an orchestration.
