  • Need help from CSS purist!

    I'm beginning to use CSS more and more but I'm not sure if I'm using it as intended in all cases. I have classes named things like 'box' that will wrap the content inside it with a border, which seems like good CSS to me. On the other hand I have classes like 'margin-right-5' and 'float-left' that sets the css to margin-right: 5px and float:left respectively. I'm wondering if this is good practice. Then in my markup I'd do something like: <div class="box float-left margin-right-5"> <!-- CONTENT HERE --> </div> Sometimes I may want to float right or not have a margin at all and still use the 'box' class, so I use several classes in order to make the css more flexible. Am I destroying the principles of CSS?

  • Support both Standard mode and Quirks mode? Is that possible and necessary?

    Today I was assigned a bug saying that some page elements don't work on IE8 Quirks mode at all, and I need to fix them. The point is that I believe our pages will always be rendered in Standard mode, because we specify DOCTYPE at the beginning of every page (via master page). I'd think it must be some debugging tools changed that during testing. I managed to convice QA to close it as by design, after a brief explanation to her. Now I start to think the question that whether we should have our page work on both Standard and Quirks mode. Maybe we should try to minimize the problem even if the page is not rendering in a supposed mode? Any standard or best practices on that? Thanks!

  • Is linking a <div> using javascript acceptable?

    I want to link an entire <div>, but CSS2 does not support adding an href to a div (or span for that matter). My solution is to use the onClick property to add a link. Is this acceptable for modern browsers?   • Web page looks good in FF but every other browser hates it

    I am trying to make my own website and it was comming along quite nicely. It looked beautiful in firefox when opened and worked wonderfully. But then I run it in any other browser... and it screwes up... how can I fix this?     Hi there. I'm using a very simple CSS dropdown menu which works well in most modern browsers. Unfortunately it must also work in IE6 and 7, which it currently does not.     I'm trying to implement the Variable envelope return path (VERP) method to manage email addresses (ie when an email I send bounces back I want it to be sent to a specific email address so that I can update my database to avoid sending emails to that email address in the future). According to this article it is possible to specify the email address a bounce email is sent to. How do you do this in .Net? For example say I ([email protected]) want to send an email to you ([email protected]). If [email protected] doesn't exist anymore I want yourserver to send the bounce email to [email protected]). This way when I receive this bounced email I know that [email protected] is not a valid email address anymore and I can update my database accordingly. In this example, the bounce address would be: [email protected] How do you specify it using System.Net.Mail?

    Hello all. Just trying to get the hang of using the semantically correct XHTML markup. Just writing the code for a small navigation item. Where each button has effectivly a title and a descrption. I thought a definition list would therefore be great so i wrote the following <dl> <dt>Import images</dt> <dd>Read in new image names to database</dd> <dt>Exhibition Management</dt> <dd>Create / Delete an exhibition </dd> <dt>Image Management</dt> <dd>Edit name, medium and exhibition data </dd> </dl> But...I want the above to be 3 buttons, each button containing the dt and dd text. How can i do this with the correct code? Normally i would make each button a div and use that for the visual button behaviour (onHover and current page selection stuff). Any advice please Thanks

  • Is it possible to use an input within a <label> field?

    I have a bunch of optional "write-in" values for a survey I'm working on. These are basically a radio button with a textbox within the answer field - the idea being that you would toggle the button and write something into the box. What I'd like to do is have the radio button toggled whenever a user clicks in the text field - this seems like a use-case that makes a lot of sense. Doing this: <input type="radio" id="radiobutton"><label for="radiobutton">Other: <input type="text" id="radiobutton_other"></label> works fine in Chrome (and I am guessing, other WebKit browsers as well), but there are weird selection issues in Firefox, so I'm assuming its a non-standard practice that I should stay away from. Is there a way to replicate this functionality without using JavaScript? I have an onclick function that will work, but we're trying to make our site usable for people who might have NoScript-type stuff running.

    All right so I am doing a javascript code for a login type form and it will lead you to a new page. Here it is: function submit1() { var x=document.getElementById("username"); var y=document.getElementById("password"); if (x.value=="username" && y.value=="password") { window.location="Example.php"; } else { window.alert=("The information you have submitted is incorrect and needs to be submitted again!"); } } When ever I am hitting the submit button it takes me straight to the page instead of checking to see if it right.   • IE8 Accordion menu is throwing out some weird bugs

    I have an accordion side menu in my latest project that works in all modern browsers properly, apart from ie8. In Ie8, using the menu and clicking results in random padding and margins to be added and sometimes disappear for no apparent reason. I can't find any bit of jquery code that would potentially cause this to happen which is a pain. Even more confusing is the fact that this doesn't happen in Ie7 =S Can anyone here replicate this bug, and see what the problem is? Project Demo to view in ie8
