  • Drawing lattices online

    This isn't really a programming question but... Is there any way to draw online a lattice for a material, like a compound? i.e. a 3D gridlike pattern? I know there are some applications for drawing mathematical lattices, but the notation to me is unfamiliar - are there simply programs or applets or something for drawing lattices like in a compound?

  • Conventions for modelling c programs.

    I'm working with a source base written almost entirely in straight-c (nginx). It does, however, make use of rich high level programming techniques such as compile-time metaprogramming, and OOP - including run-time dispatch. I want to draw ER diagrams, UML class diagrams and UML sequence diagrams. However to have a clean mapping between the two, consistent conventions must be applied. So, I am hopping someone has some references to material that establishes or applies such conventions to similar style c-code.

I have been wondering however where UITableViewController finds out about its delegate and dataSource. Currently I have it as @interface ItemsViewController : UITableViewController <UITableViewDataSource, UITableViewDelegate> But there is nothing that looks like: [self.tableView setDelegate:self] I am just wondering how the UITableViewController finds out about its delegate and dataSource

According to documentation, in owned one-to-many relationships, order of elements in "owner" object collection is determined either by automatically created index field, or by information given in explicit ordering clause. For example: @PersistenceCapable public class Person { // ... @Order(extensions = @Extension(vendorName="datanucleus", key="list-ordering", value="country asc, city asc")) private List<ContactInfo> contacts = new List<ContactInfo>(); In unowned relationships, "owner" object contains collection of keys of "nested" objects, for example: @PersistenceCapable public class Author { // ... @Persistent private List<Key> books; Is order of keys preserved, if I use List<Key> collection in "owner" object for storing keys of "nested" elements? I could not find answer neither in JDO relationships article, nor in Data Classes article :(

For example, how would one implement the quests of a typical role-playing game (e.g. BG or TES)? Or how would you implement weapons with multiple stacking effects in a first-person shooter (e.g. the Shrink-gun or Freezer from DN3D)? How would you implement multiple choice options with a possibly intricate decision tree leading to several different outcomes (e.g. the mission trees in WC)?   • How to determine the event of the linux devices?

    Hi, I am learning some embedded programming. I am using Linux as my platform and I want to create a daemon program that will check if a particular device(magstrife, keypad, etc) is active. Like for example, my daemon program is running in the background, then when I make a keypress event, my deamon app will do something. What implementation should I do to create this app? In the book Programming with Quartz there is an example on how to draw a circle clipped by a rectangular path (p.37), and there is also a chapter on image masking with existing image as stencil (Ch.10). But I'm still not sure about how to clip an existing image using path. Is there any example or pointer?

  • Lock Question - When is an Update (U) lock issued?

    We are trying to resolve a deadlock problem. The transaction that is getting rolled back is attempting to issue an Update (U) lock on a resource that another transaction has an Exclusive (X) lock on. According to Books Online (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175519.aspx), an Update lock is supposed to prevent deadlocks, not cause them. So, my question is, why/when is an Update lock applied to a resource? We're a little confused about this because the resource that is attempting to have the Update lock applied to will not be updated by the process that is having the transaction rolled back.   • Overcoming C limitations for large projects

    One aspect where C shows its age is the encapsulation of code. Many modern languages has classes, namespaces, packages... a much more convenient to organize code than just a simple "include". Since C is still the main language for many huge projects. How do you to overcome its limitations? I suppose that one main factor should be lots of discipline. I would like to know what you do to handle large quantity of C code, which authors or books you can recommend.

  • why do we all learn and study java or .net or why java or .net are popular?

    My question to be clear is why do we all need to learn java or .net(C#) , still java or .net are more popular than delphi or c++ and even there are lot of resource,articles or books compared to c++ or delphi about java and .net. However, I heard majority, if I am right about 80% of software are developed using c++ or delphi in the software industry. so, why do we bother about other languages specifically about the cosmopolitan languages such as java or .net in education as well as for job interview. Although, still I know the elegance of java and .net, their safe code execution,fully objected oriented behavior ...etc, but still according to the statics they are not preferred on software develpement as a primary language mainly because of their execution time compared to c++ or delphi. So my question are why do they choose them for jobs or educational purpose and everything else? why do we lose our time learning these language if we are forced to use the other languages in the industry?

    Scala has symbols - names that start with a single quote ' and which are a kind of string constants. I know symbols from Ruby (where they start with a colon). In Ruby they are used for some meta-programming tasks, like generating getters and setters for member variables (for example attr_reader :name to generate a getter for name). I haven't seen a lot of use of symbols in Scala code yet. What are practical uses for symbols in Scala?

  • Do you ever feel confident in your skills?

    As a self taught developer i always find myself questioning my skill and knowledge and always feel like i am falling behind in using new technology. Over a period of nearly 9 years i've studied most mainstream languages (especially C based ones), used lots of different OSes, read and absorbed many books and even written one myself. But i still feel i'm usless! Do professional developers ever get to the stage where they feel confident that they know what they are doing and are confident when submitting solutions/code? When do you know you're good enough?
