• When should I use String.Format or String.Concat instead of the concatenation operator?

  In C# it is possible to concatenate strings in several different ways: Using the concatenation operator: var newString = "The answer is '" + value + "'."; Using String.Format: var newString = String.Format("The answer is '{0}'.", value); Using String.Concat: var newString = String.Concat("The answer is '", value, "'."); What are the advantages / disadvantages of each of these methods? When should I prefer one over the others? The question arises because of a debate between developers. One never uses String.Format for concatenation - he argues that this is for formatting strings, not for concatenation, and that is is always unreadable because the items in the string are expressed in the wrong order. The other frequently uses String.Format for concatenation, because he thinks it makes the code easier to read, especially where there are several sets of quotes involved. Both these developers also use the concatenation operator and String.Builder, too.

• Extend LDAP Membership to append a prefix/sufix to the username

  Our web applications are using LDAP Membership Provider to authenticate and register users in Active Directory. In order to allow users to provide usernames that exist in other applications, we need to add a prefix in its username and it should be as transparent and painless as possible. What I need is a way to extend the LDAP Membership Provider to be able to add (concatenate) a prefix to the username just before Membership authenticate or register it. For example, if user input is "JohnS" in application 1... I want to authenticate: "App1_JohnS". How could I extend the membership to accomplish this? Any idea what is triggered just before authenticate and register (create user)? Update: Each web app has an "OU" in AD where create users to and authenticate from. But as it is just ONE Active Directory Controller the usernames must be unique. We need to solve this issue using Membership providers and not adding more ADs.

• PHP MySQLi timeout on locked tables?

  Hi guys I have a weird problem with mysqli timeout options, here you go: I am using mysqli_init() and real_connect() in order to set MYSQLI_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT $this->__mysqli = mysqli_init(); if(!$this->__mysqli->options(MYSQLI_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT,1)) throw new Exception('Timeout settings failed') $this->__mysqli->real_connect(host,user,pass,db); .... Then I am initiating query on locked table (LOCKE TABLE users WRITE) and its just hanging, ignoring all my settings even: set_time_limit(1); ini_set('max_execution_time',1); ini_set('default_socket_timeout',1); ini_set('mysql.connect_timeout',1); I understand why set_time_limit(1) and max_execution_time is ignored but why other timeouts and especially MYSQLI_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT are ignored and how to solve it. I am using PHP 5.3.1 on Windows and Linux boxes, please help.

• How to prevent a globally overridden "new" operator from being linked in from external library

  In our iPhone XCode 3.2.1 project, we're linking in 2 external static C++ libraries, libBlue.a and libGreen.a. libBlue.a globally overrides the "new" operator for it's own memory management. However, when we build our project, libGreen.a winds up using libBlue's new operator, which results in a crash (presumably because libBlue.a is making assumptions about the kinds of structures being allocated). Both libBlue.a and libGreen.a are provided by 3rd parties, so we can't change any of their source code or build options. When we remove libBlue.a from the project, libGreen.a doesn't have any issues. However, no amount of shuffling the linking order of the libraries seems to fix the problem, nor does any experimentation with the various linking flags. Is there some way to tell XCode to tell the linker to "have libGreen's use of the new operator use the standard C++ new operator rather than the one redefined by libBlue"?

• Django query: Count and Group BY

  I have a query that I'm trying to figure the "django" way of doing it: I want to take the last 100 calls from Call. Which is easy: calls = Call.objects.all().order_by('-call_time')[:100] However the next part I can't find the way to do it via django's ORM. I want to get a list of the call_types and the number of calls each one has WITHIN that previous queryset i just did. Normally i would do a query like this: "SELECT COUNT(id),calltype FROM call WHERE id IN ( SELECT id FROM call ORDER BY call_time DESC LIMIT 100 ) GROUP BY calltype;" I can't seem to find the django way of doing this particular query.   I'm a complete newbie to Windows and COM programming, trying to use com4j in order to call a COM object from Java. Com4j generates Java interfaces from COM definitions "often found in .ocx, .dll, .exe, and/or .tlb files" . It was easy for me to locate the .ocx file of my target COM object, but I have no clue regarding the standard interface iStream. Microsoft's documentation mentions OLE32.DLL ( c:\Windows\Windows32\Ole32.dll ?) , but neither the com4j generator nor oleviewer succeed in opening this file. Any hints?

• Programmatically clean Word generated HTML while preserving styles?

  In my current company, we have this decade old... let's call it a "Hello World" application. While wanting to create a newer version of it, we also want to preserve older entries. These older entries contain hideous Word generated HTML which was never filtered before. If and when we move to a newer system, I'd generally prefer to have that HTML cleaned and filtered in order to have the site comply with HTML standards as much as possible. However, just cleaning that code like Jeff Atwood described in his blog or in any other way I know of would also ruin the style and formatting. Now, that just might cause our users to revolt and then all hell will break loose... Not a very good idea. Question is -- can Word's HTML be cleaned while preserving basic formatting? (e.g: coloring, italicized, bold text and so on) Preferably using publicly available code or library, such as HTML Tidy, examples in C# would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Embedding googleVis charts into a web site

  Reading from the googleVis package vignette: "With the googleVis package users can create easily web pages with interactive charts based on R data frames and display them either via the R.rsp package or within their own sites". Following the instructions I was able to see the sample charts, using the plot method for gvis objects. This method by default creates a rsp-file in the rsp/myAnalysis folder of the googleVis package, using the type and chart id information of the object and displays the output using the local web server of the R.rsp package (port 8074 by default). Could anybody help me (or provide some link) on the procedure someone has to follow in order to embed such charts into an existing web site (e.g. a joomla site)?

• Multiple Default Routes in ASP.NET MVC to different Default Actions

  I have multiple controllers with different actions (no "Index" actions). The actions I consider "default" actions, are named differently. I want to create default routes for their names and have the first available action (from my list of default actions) executed if only the controller name is provided in the route. So, for example, I have the following actions which I want to consider default and want checked for their existence in a controller in this order: List() Draw() ViewSingle() The routing should somehow search for /{controller} and then take the first available action from the list above as default action, e.g.: /ControllerA -> ControllerA.List() /ControllerB -> ControllerB.Draw() /ControllerC -> ControllerC.ViewSingle() /ControllerD -> ControllerD.Draw() /ControllerE -> ControllerE.List() Is this possible? • ACT Professional for Windows-Memory leak?

  I have an ACT! professional for Windows V11.1, with the latest SQL service pack (SP3) and have an apparent memory leak on the server. After a restart the ACT! SQL instance (SQLSERVR) consumes almost all the available memory on the server, we have added more memory to the server (it is running under Hyper-V) but it continues to consume it all. I have not been able to connect to the SQL server instance using management studio in order to limit the amount of RAM it is allocated. Are there any potential solutions for this? or should I continue to restart the services?

• Using TFSBuild to publish ClickOnce files that include prerequisites

  I have declared an MSBuild tag in my TFSBuild project in order to publish ClickOnce files for my project. WSE 3.0 and .Net 3.0 are both pre-requisites for the application, so in Visual Studio I have ticked those as pre-requisites. When I build from Visual Studio, it creates a setup.exe file that I can publish to my web site. When you browse to this setup.exe file it installs WSE3.0 and .Net 3.0 and then continues to install my application, which works well. If I get TFS to create the click once files using the MSBuild tag in the TFSBuild file, it creates the setup.exe file, which I can publish to my website in the same way (along with all the other ClickOnce files). When I browse to setup.exe now, however, the prerequisites don't get installed and therefore my program does not run. Does anyone know how to get TFS to build a correct setup.exe file that properly bootstraps my prerequisites?

  This may be a terribly uninformed question, brace yourself. A company I'm working with has given an 'API' that I can use to access orders, however, there are only two real commands, getorders and getorderdetails. These commands are put in the format of http://www.server.com/path/to/the/orderapi/getorders/UniqueKey/ If I go to that web address, I'm prompted for a username and password, and once authenticating, get presented with a page of JSON formatted order details, contained in the body of the html page. I would like a service to check this information and create orders in our crm based on it, is there an obvious way to access it without the browser/client interaction?

Event validation is enabled using in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" % in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation.   I have the following query: select ............. from //one table and about 20 left joins// where ( ( this_.driverName like 'blah*' or this_.renterName like 'blah*' ) or exists ( select this0__.id as y0_ from ThirdParty this0__ where this0__.name like 'blah*' and this0__.claim_id=this_.id ) ) order by this_.id asc And I have two environment: One with 175 000 records in table "this_" and second with 25 000 records in table "this_". This query works right on 175k database and it works smth about 2 seconds, but on base with 25k this query freezes. and if drop one the folloing item from where clause: ( this_.driverName like 'blah*' or this_.renterName like 'blah*' ) or exists ( select this0__.id as y0_ from ThirdParty this0__ where this0__.name like 'blah*' and this0__.claim_id=this_.id ) query runs normally. How can I to increase performance of this query?

• Database of common translated phrases for localization?

  I'd like to localize my app into a few other languages, all of which I can barely order a drink in. Does anyone know of an online resource for translations of common software menu options, messages, etc. into other languages? Given the number of developers (both OSS and closed-source) that deal with localization, and the overlap of resource strings between, it seems like a pretty obvious fit for a wiki or open source package, but I can't seem to find anything like this. I could try to mine the Windows resource files or dig around in resource strings in robust OSS apps like Firefox, but I suspect I'm not the first person to think of this and surely there is a site that I'm just not finding yet. Update: since nothing exists like this that I could find, I started a feeble attempt at an open-source string library.   I'm running an MySQL query that returns results based on location. However I have noticed recently that its really slowing down my PHP app. I used CodeIgniter and the profiler shows the query taking 4.2seconds. The geoname table has 500,000 rows. I have some indexes on the key columns, how else can speed up this query?   I need to quit firefox and restart it in order for the applet to be refreshed... its anoying since i'm still programming it an the class files changes... am i missing some codes which makes it unable to refresh the applet and still take the one from the cache??? So I have a .jar applet in my website, a simulation game that spawns army whenever user clicks on the screen... however whenever I refresh the page, the previous army are still there on the screen.. I want it to be refreshed (as if we're just starting to run the application the first time). I already tried pressing CTRL+f5 but the trick doesn't seem to work I'd basically like to do it automatically using scripts or something, so that it won't require user to manually press some button on the keyboard Any Suggestions? I'm using the scrolling extension to create the effect of a fixed toolbar on the top of the page while still able to scroll the rest of the page via a scrollable div. Everything works fine except for when a user pulls up the keyboard in order to fill in form elements in the scrollable div. The whole body is pushed to top and the ugly url bar is shown. Is there a way to prevent this?
