  • Entity Framework projections

    - by David McClelland
We are investigating the Entity Framework to see if it will meet our particular needs. Here is the scenario I am interested in: I have a large table (let's call it VeryWideRecord) which has many columns, and it has a corresponding business object (it's also called VeryWideRecord). I would like to be able to query my database for a VeryWideRecord business object, but only have values for certain columns returned by the underlying SQL. Can I do this with the Entity Framework? I am uncertain as to whether this could be done with the Entity Framework's table splitting feature, because the application needs to be able (at runtime) to change the columns that are requested. The reason for this is that we are trying to minimize the amount of information that is going across the wire. I see how this could be done using NHibernate (example), but how can I do this with the Entity Framework?

  • How do I dynamically define an instance variable?

    - by Moses
Hi everyone, I have two classes (class1 and class2) that just store data, no methods. I have a third class that has an instance variable that, depending on some user input, will be set to one of the two classes. So, in the third class I declare the variable generically as NSObject *aClass; and during runtime set it to whatever it should be. aClass = [[Class1 alloc] init]; // or aClass = [[Class2 alloc] init]; However, when I try to access fields from aClass NSString *str = aClass.field1; It gives me the error: request for member 'field1' in something not a structure or a union. Field1 is declared in both class1 and class2. When I try to cast aClass aClass = (Class1 *) aClass; it gives the same error. What am I doing wrong, is there a better way to do this?

  • Using condionals in Linq Programatically

    - by Mike B
    I was just reading a recent question on using conditionals in Linq and it reminded me of an issue I have not been able to resolve. When building Linq to SQL queries programatically how can this be done when the number of conditionals is not known until runtime? For instance in the code below the first clause creates an IQueryable that, if executed, would select all the tasks (called issues) in the database, the 2nd clause will refine that to just issues assigned to one department if one has been selected in a combobox (Which has it's selected item bound to the departmentToShow property). How could I do this using the selectedItems collection instead? IQueryable<Issue> issuesQuery; // Will select all tasks issuesQuery = from i in db.Issues orderby i.IssDueDate, i.IssUrgency select i; // Filters out all other Departments if one is selected if (departmentToShow != "All") { issuesQuery = from i in issuesQuery where i.IssDepartment == departmentToShow select i; }

  • ivar is inside two blocks

    - by Desperate Developer
I have an ivar like this declared on interface: BOOL controllerOK; I have to use this ivar inside a block that resides itself in a block. Something like myBlockl = ^(){ [self presentViewController:controller animated:YES completion:^(){ if (controllerOK) [self doStuff]; }]; }; If I try to do that, I see an error capturing self strongly in this block is likely to lead to a retain cycle for the if (controllerOK) line. This does not appear to be one of those blocks problems that you create another variable using __unsafe_unretained before the block starts. First because this instruction cannot be used with a BOOL and second because the ivar controllerOK has to be tested on runtime inside the block. Another problem is that the block itself is declared on the interface, so it will be used outside the context where it is being created. How do I solve that?

  • T4 Template Interception

    - by JeffN825
I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any T4 template based method interception systems? We are beginning to write mobile applications (currently with MonoTouch for IOS). We have a very nice core set of DI/IoC functionality and I'd like to leverage this in development for the new platform. Since runtime code generation Reflection.Emit is not supported, I'm hoping to use T4 templates to implement the dynamic interception functionality (+ TinyIoC as a container for resolution). We are currently using Castle Windsor (and intend to continue doing so for our SL and full .NET development), but all of the Windsor specific ties are completely encapsulated, so given a suitable T4 solution, it shouldn't be hard to implement an adapter that uses a T4 based implementation instead of Windsor.

  • How do I get the username in Java (ie, who -m in Java) (or Jython 2.1)

    - by amertune
Here's the situation. I have a jython 2.1 script in a shared account that needs to know who is calling it. In bash, I can simply use 'who -m' and it will give me the correct username. I haven't been able to find anything in java (or jython) that would give me a similar result. Even trying to call Runtime.getRuntime().exec("who -m") doesn't do anything. When I try to read the InputStream from the process returned by exec, the stream is empty.

  • Difference between var and Class class in object creation

    - by Divine
    Its a silly question, however shocked to see different behaviors. Learning a lot. Lets say I have two classes below Class A { public void Display() { } } Class B : A { public void Display() { } } Class C : B { public void Display() { } } Class Final { static void Main() { var c = new C(); // B c = new C(); //My doubt is, both of the above gives different results. May I know B c = new C() creates object of B or C? What I understood is, it creates object of B. Then why we say "new C()"? I agree with C c = new C(); But I thought, B b = new C(); creates object of B. Where we use this style? Only when utilizing runtime polymorphism? (Overriding methods)? } }

  • jruby/activerecord-jdbc/tomcat/DB2 ready for enterprise?

    - by arkadiy
I am trying to introduce RoR to my company and I have two ways of doing so in my mind: (1) rails/ibm_db2/passenger/DB2 - which is my preferable way but it is not really supported by company's infrastructure. (2) jruby/activerecord-jdbc/tomcat/DB2 - probably easier way to migrate relying on current infrastructure and java libs IF I have a proof this is an enterprise ready technology. Does anyone know if there is any prof that jruby/aciverecord-jdbc-adapter/DB2/tomcat is mature enough for production? Are there any problems I should know about during Development/Deployment/Runtime? My webapp is for a company intranet, around 200~400 active users.

  • Execute 'stty raw' command in same terminal?

    - by Matt
I'm trying to put the console into "raw" mode in Java. I understand this will only work on UNIX. I'm using the command stty raw If I type the command into the terminal directly, it does what it's supposed to do. In Java, I try to set the mode like this: Runtime.getRuntime().exec("stty raw"); But the terminal does not go into raw mode. I have a feeling this is because Java is just executing the command in a virtual terminal in the background or something, rather than the active terminal. Is there a way to do this?

  • OS monitoring using JAVA

    - by Puneri
I'm planning to implement a framework for monitoring OS level resources: process network stats cpu info etc using JAVA. I see there is SIGAR API by Spring, which is implemented in native language and JAVA API being provided on top. But I will prefer not to have native stuff in my framework, rather for each OS will write a Java Class which will fetch required OS info by running system commands via JAVA Runtime. So I would like to have inputs/suggestions that one may have seen of not doing this in JAVA and use native app/api/jni. Any example will help for sure. I agree each OS has different commands to get these stats, but will prefer to have a Java Class per OS than have/load native code.

  • Casting objects to Integer,string ,...

    - by Milan
Hello everybody! I have one small problem. I have list of types(int,string,..) ArrayList<Class> typeList; and I have some input values; ArrayList<Object> values; How to cast some value to some type if I know which type from the typeList is the values; typeList.get(i).cast(values.get(i)); <- this is not working??? Actualy I generate dynamic form in runtime. With Java reflection I get parameterTypes from methods from some class, I generate form with input fields and then i want to cast the text from the input fields to specific types from the paramterTypes that I got with Java reflection from some class.

  • Get license file from a folder in C# project

    - by daft
I have a license file that I need to access at runtime in order to create pdf-files. After I have created the in memory pdf, I need to call a method on that pdf to set the license, like this: pdf.SetLicense("pathToLicenseFileHere"); The license file is located in the same project as the.cs-file that creates the pdf, but is in a separate folder. I cannot get this simple thing to behave correctly, which makes me a bit sad, since it really shouldn't be that hard. :( I try to set the path like this: string path = @"\Resources\File.lic"; But it just isn't working out for me.

  • Objective-C: how to allocate array of GLuint

    - by sashaeve
I have an array of GLuint with fixed size: GLuint textures[10]; Now I need to set a size of array dynamically. I wrote something like this: *.h: GLuint *textures; *.m: textures = malloc(N * sizeof(GLuint)); where N - needed size. Then it used like this: glGenTextures(N, &textures[0]); // load texture from image -(GLuint)getTexture:(int)index{ return textures[index]; } I used the answer from here, but program fell in runtime. How to fix this? Program is written on Objective-C and uses OpenGL ES.

  • Different ways to specify libraries to gcc/g++

    - by abigagli
I'd be curious to understand if there's any substantial difference in specifying libraries (both shared and static) to gcc/g++ in the two following ways (CC can be g++ or gcc) CC -o output_executable /path/to/my/libstatic.a /path/to/my/libshared.so source1.cpp source2.cpp ... sourceN.cpp vs CC -o output_executable -L/path/to/my/libs -lstatic -lshared source1.cpp source2.cpp ... sourceN.cpp I can only see a major difference being that passing directly the fully-specified library name would make for a greater control in choosing static or dynamic versions, but I suspect there's something else going on that can have side effects on how the executable is built or will behave at runtime, am I right? Andrea.

  • How to set up dynamically Part in MultipartRequestEntity

    - by ee_vin
Hello, I'm using commons-httpclient-3.1 inside my android application. And I would like to know if it possible to manipulate Part (org.apache.commons.httpclient.methods.multipart.Part) dynamically? Essentially adding new FilePart and new StringPart at runtime before sending the request. Every example I've found until now suppose that you know how many fields you are dealing with. Ex: File f = new File("/path/fileToUpload.txt"); PostMethod filePost = new PostMethod("http://host/some_path"); Part[] parts = { new StringPart("param_name", "value"), new FilePart(f.getName(), f) }; filePost.setRequestEntity( new MultipartRequestEntity(parts, filePost.getParams()) ); HttpClient client = new HttpClient(); int status = client.executeMethod(filePost); code from http://hc.apache.org/httpclient-3.x/apidocs/org/apache/commons/httpclient/methods/multipart/MultipartRequestEntity.html Android specific thread: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/0f9e17bbaf50c5fc Thank you

  • Accessing properties through Generic type parameter

    - by Veer
I'm trying to create a generic repository for my models. Currently i've 3 different models which have no relationship between them. (Contacts, Notes, Reminders). class Repository<T> where T:class { public IQueryable<T> SearchExact(string keyword) { //Is there a way i can make the below line generic //return db.ContactModels.Where(i => i.Name == keyword) //I also tried db.GetTable<T>().Where(i => i.Name == keyword) //But the variable i doesn't have the Name property since it would know it only in the runtime //db also has a method ITable GetTable(Type modelType) but don't think if that would help me } } In MainViewModel, I call the Search method like this: Repository<ContactModel> _contactRepository = new Repository<ContactModel>(); public void Search(string keyword) { var filteredList = _contactRepository.SearchExact(keyword).ToList(); } I use Linq-To-Sql.

  • Is this considered as using private functions in iPhone dev, and thus illegal?

    - by user153231
I'm trying to disable scrolling for a UIWebView and the only way i found is using this way: #import <objc/runtime.h> id scroller = [[Webview subviews] lastObject]; int count; Method *method = class_copyMethodList([scroller class], &count); int i; for (i=0; i<count; i++) { if (strcmp(method_getName(method[i]), "setScrollingEnabled:") == 0) break; } IMP test = method_getImplementation(method[i]); test(scroller, @selector(setScrollingEnabled:), NO); Is this considered to be an illegal way of using the iPhone SDK? Can this cause my application to be rejected for the App store?

  • Function calls in virtual machine killing performance

    - by GenTiradentes
I wrote a virtual machine in C, which has a call table populated by pointers to functions that provide the functionality of the VM's opcodes. When the virtual machine is run, it first interprets a program, creating an array of indexes corresponding to the appropriate function in the call table for the opcode provided. It then loops through the array, calling each function until it reaches the end. Each instruction is extremely small, typically one line. Perfect for inlining. The problem is that the compiler doesn't know when any of the virtual machine's instructions are going to be called, as it's decided at runtime, so it can't inline them. The overhead of function calls and argument passing is killing the performance of my VM. Any ideas on how to get around this?

  • JQuery Optimization: Is there any way to speed up the rendering of the FlexSelect control?

    - by Sephrial
Greetings, I am new to jQuery, and I have a performance problem with the FlexSelect control where it takes about 5 seconds to render the dropdown control (in the renderDropdown() function). The dropdown list contains about 5000 element. I believe all the runtime is attributed to the following block of code: var list = this.dropdownList.html(""); $.each(this.results, function() { list.append($("<li/>").html(this.name)); }); Question: Are there any alternatives that would build this list of elements in a more inefficient manner?

  • Get property name from class

    - by Polaris
I need property name in my app and I use next code to get it string PropertyName =SomeClass.GetType().GetProperty("Category").Name; But I think that is bad idea. Because I use web service classes and I dont know when property names can be changed. This code give me exception only in runtime. But if I write something like this SomeClassInstance.Property.GetProperyName i get exception in moment of compilation and repair this problem. Is it possible to get property name dynamically?

  • Java - JPA - @Version annotation

    - by Yatendra Goel
I am new to JPA. I am cofused about the @Version annotation. How it works? I have googled it and found various answers whose extract is as follows: JPA uses a version field in your entities to detect concurrent modifications to the same datastore record. When the JPA runtime detects an attempt to concurrently modify the same record, it throws an exception to the transaction attempting to commit last. But still I am not sure how it works? ================================================================================== Also as from the following lines: You should consider version fields immutable. Changing the field value has undefined results. Does it mean that we should declare our version field as final

  • Call javascript function from Java (Groovy) class

    - by ashkanr
Hi, I have a javascript function (very big one!) that I need its functionality in a Java (Groovy) class. It is a simple calendar converter. I can rewrite it in groovy but just want to know if it is possible to call javascript function from a java (groovy) method? I guess functional testing libraries like selenium and Canoo should have something like this, am I right? PS: I don't want to wake up a real-world browser in order to use its JS runtime env. Thanks,

  • Error after switching from .NET 3.5 to 4

    - by Queops
Application.Run(new Main()); This line gives TypeInitializationException was unhandled after I switched from 3.5 to 4 framework. Why is this? Edit: Forgot to mention this is a Winforms C# application. Okay so I have SQLite .NET referenced. I tried this on a project created on .NET 4 by default and didn't give me any error so I assumed it wasn't about SQLite .NET http://sqlite.phxsoftware.com/ Please note v2.0.50727 this is the runtime version of the DLL which seems to be causing the problem.
