  • What is the difference between using IDisposable vs a destructor in C#?

    When would I implement IDispose on a class as opposed to a destructor? I read this article, but I'm still missing the point. My assumption is that if I implement IDispose on an object, I can explicitly 'destruct' it as opposed to waiting for the garbage collector to do it. Is this correct? Does that mean I should always explicitly call Dispose on an object? What are some common examples of this?

    Hello I've been looking for a method to strip my XML content of apostrophes (') like: <name> Jim O'Connor</name> since my DBMS is complaining of receiving those.   • In Ruby, how does one get their IP octet without going through DNS?

    I can, on some of my systems, get my IP address (192.68.m.n format) by doing this: addr = IPSocket::getAddress(Socket.gethostname()) ...the trouble is that this only works if the name the local machine uses for itself is the name the DNS server associates with it. How *&#( hard can it be for ruby to just return its primary interface's IP address? I have to do this in a platform-independant way or I'd just call ifconfig or ipconfig and parse it.

    GORM sits on top of [Hibernate](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibernate_(Java). The issue is that sometimes Hibernate will throw exceptions from the JDBC driver that I can't figure out how to investigate. Specifically: Could not execute JDBC batch update; /* snip */ Caused by: java.sql.BatchUpdateException: /* snip */ [insert] was aborted. Call getNextException to see the cause. If it makes any difference I'm using PostgreSQL.

    In my Dispose methods (like the one below), everytime i want to call someObj.Dispose() i also have a check for someObj!=null. Is that because of bad design on my part? I tried to do so by using $("#slider").slider("option", "values", [50,80]); This call will set the values, but the element will not update the slider positions. Calling $('#slider").trigger('change'); does not help either. Is there another/better way to modify the value AND slider position ?

  • Can't Get ANT build to work in eclipse

    Long story short: I want to add the --core-library flag at compile time to include a library that depends on some javax libraries that aren't included in the android platform. I have attempted the walkthrough here: http://commons.apache.org/scxml/usecases/scxml-stopwatch-on-android.html but nothing ever changed on the emulator. I don't think I can repackage the libraries I'm after because I cannot amend the callers to call the new packages without violating a license agreement. Please, someone, point me in the right direction.

  • Activity gets killed while executing the camera intent

    In my app I call the system camera to take a picture, and then handle the result in onActivityResult. You know, the usual. It used to work, but now my calling activity gets killed while I'm taking the picture. Specifically, onDestroy() is called on my activity right after I press the camera shutter. The photo does get taken & saved (I've checked that the file gets written on the SD card). After I accept the photo, instead of returning to the calling activity and invoking onActivityResult, the previous activity in the activity stack gets called. I see no exceptions in the logcat. My custom exception handler doesn't get called. If it matters, my app also includes a service that listens to GPS updates, but I unregister all the receivers in onPause().
