• Is there any place to find real-world usage-style tutorials for programming languages?

  Let's face it. When you want to learn something completely new, be it mathematics or foreign languages, it's easiest to learn when you get real world scenarios in front of you, with theory applied. For example, trigonometry can be extremely interesting when applied to creation of 2D platform games. Norwegian can be really interesting to learn if you live in Norway. When I try to look at a new programming language, I always find these steps the hardest: What tools do I need to compile and how do I do it Introduction-step: Why is this programming language so cool? Where and how is it used? (The step I am looking for, real-world scenarios) The rest, deep diving into the language, pure theory and such, is often much easier if you have completed step 1 and 2. Because now you know what it's all about, and can just read the specification when you need to. What I ask is, do you have any recommendations for places I can find such material for programming languages? Be it websites or companies selling books in this style, I'm interested. Also, I am interested in all languages. (If I had found a "real-world usage" explained for even INTERCAL, I would be interested). In some other thread here, I found a book called "Seven Languages in Seven Weeks". This is kind of what I am looking for, but I believe there must be "more like this".

• Ubuntu Slow - What architecture does the Windows Installer install?

  I feel absolutely limited by using Windows, and I need to switch to a Unix environment. I once installed Red Hat on my lappie (screen + external monitor setup; 4GB ram; x64; runs fast) and it worked fine, but I saw that the computer cluster that is the birthplace of my unix knowledge switched to Ubuntu, so naturally I follow. To the point. When I installed Ubuntu onto my machine via the Windows Installer, it ran quite slow. Opening Firefox takes about 8-9 seconds, it freezes up often, unable to handle its own background processes. I saw in a thread that, perhaps, it is running slow because the Windows Installer is installing an x64 version. Of course, my computer has had no performance issues in the past(except that time with the trojans but you know, know one is perfect ;) ) Anyways, I uninstalled Ubuntu, freeing up the max allocated memory it took up, and continue to be sad, trapped in my MS world with only a buggy Cygwin, any assistance is greatly appreciated! :) Thanks ~Ben

• ubuntu 12.04 desktop Error: unknown command 'gfxmode'. Pressing any key continues

  Premise: linux noobie here, I have the same issue as OP: fresh 12.04 desktop, changed grub with grub customizer, now I get a: unknown command 'gfxmode' press ...etc was asked to "re-post" this question and link to this thread which I refer to above. I have tried what Tarek said, and nothing seems to work, I find two lines with gfxmode: function gfxmode { gfxmode \$linux_gfx_mode Note: not sure if it matter but in the error the two single quotes before gfxmode are not the same, the first is a slanted quote mark, the second (after gfxmode) is a straight one. I commented out the whole line, I tried to add 'set' before gfxmode, neither did any difference. I found another place that said to remove the line from another file 40_custom, but I checked and those files do not contain anything relating to the line we are looking for: gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode Not sure what I am missing, but the file linux.save has recently appeared when searching for the line. Not sure if its just a temp file of some kind. In any case I cannot seem to get it, what am I missing? Thanks! P.S. sorry for any messups in form :)

  A new article, part of a three-part series, now up on the front page of otn/java, by Java Champion Adam Bien, titled “The Enterprise Side of JavaFX,” shows developers how to implement the LightView UI dashboard with JavaFX 2. Bien explains that “the RESTful back end of the LightView application comes with a rudimentary HTML page that is used to start/stop the monitoring service, set the snapshot interval, and activate/deactivate the GlassFish monitoring capabilities.”He explains that “the configuration view implemented in the org.lightview.view.Browser component is needed only to start or stop the monitoring process or set the monitoring interval.”Bien concludes his article with a general summary of the principles applied:“JavaFX encourages encapsulation without forcing you to build models for each visual component. With the availability of bindable properties, the boundary between the view and the model can be reduced to an expressive set of bindable properties. Wrapping JavaFX components with ordinary Java classes further reduces the complexity. Instead of dealing with low-level JavaFX mechanics all the time, you can build simple components and break down the complexity of the presentation logic into understandable pieces. • Best Architecture for ASP.NET WebForms Application

  I have written an ASP.NET WebForms portal for a client. The project has kind of evolved rather than being properly planned and structured from the beginning. Consequently, all the code is mashed together within the same project and without any layers. The client is now happy with the functionality, so I would like to refactor the code such that I will be confident about releasing the project. As there seems to be many differing ways to design the architecture, I would like some opinions about the best approach to take. FUNCTIONALITY The portal allows administrators to configure HTML templates. Other associated "partners" will be able to display these templates by adding IFrame code to their site. Within these templates, customers can register and purchase products. An API has been implemented using WCF allowing external companies to interface with the system also. An Admin section allows Administrators to configure various functionality and view reports for each partner. The system sends out invoices and email notifications to customers. CURRENT ARCHITECTURE It is currently using EF4 to read/write to the database. The EF objects are used directly within the aspx files. This has facilitated rapid development while I have been writing the site but it is probably unacceptable to keep it like that as it is tightly coupling the db with the UI. Specific business logic has been added to partial classes of the EF objects. QUESTIONS The goal of refactoring will be to make the site scalable, easily maintainable and secure. 1) What kind of architecture would be best for this? Please describe what should be in each layer, whether I should use DTO's / POCO / Active Record pattern etc. 2) Is there a robust way to auto-generate DTO's / BOs so that any future enhancements will be simple to implement despite the extra layers? 3) Would it be beneficial to convert the project from WebForms to MVC?

• Internet Explorer 9 is coming Monday to a web near you

  Internet Explorer 9 is finally here...well almost.  Microsoft is releasing their new browser on March 14, 2011. IE9 has a number of improvements, including: Faster, Faster, Faster.  Did I mention it is faster?   With the new browsers coming out from Mozilla, Google, and Microsoft, there have been a flood of speed test coverage.  Chrome has long held the javascript speed crown.  But according to Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over at ZDNET..."for the moment at least IE9 is actually the fastest browser I’ve tested to date."  He came to this revelation after figuring out that the 32-bit version of IE9 has the new Chakra JIT (the 64-bit version doesn't).  It also has a DirectX-based rendering engine so it can do cool tricks once reserved for desktop applications. Windows 7 Desktop Integration.  Read my post for more details.  Unfortantely, they didn't integrate my ideas...at least not yet :) Hot new UI.  Ok, they "borrowed" some ideas from Chrome...but that is the best form of flattery. Standards Compliance.  A real focus on HTML5 and CSS3.  Definite goodness for developers. So, go get yourself some IE9 on Monday and enjoy!

• Belgrade Open Source Software Development Center

  A new Open Source Software Development Center is open at University of Belgrade Serbia. It centers around using Java & NetBeans as open source projects to learn from and contribute to. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. Here's video describing the NetBeans UML plugin: University of Belgrade also has an official university course about open source development, where students learn to use development tools, work in teams, participate in open source projects and learn from real world software development projects. • Ubuntu 12.04 using b43-fwcutter

  I have used 10.04 with the b43-fwcutter driver to drive my BCM4318 Broadcom card (a Linksys WPC54G v3) on my old Dell Inspiron 8100 for two years+ with no troubles. I just upgraded to 12.04 and although everything worked fine after install, before I added the b43-fwcutter driver, once I installed the driver, the system refuses to boot. Even before I install the Linksys card!! It just hangs on boot with graphical garbage on the screen. I tried several attempts to recover the system using the live CD, and finally reinstalled completely. I have been thru the cycle, install fresh system, verify everything works, then install b43-fwcutter and it is hung, several times. Consistent hard fail. The system runs fine on hardwire Ethernet, and wireless was fine on 10.04. But I cannot get there with 12.04. So after several attempts, I am now ready to admit defeat and ask for help. I have read every thread that search turned up, and either the advice is to do what I did, i.e. install fwcutter, or does not apply (Different Broadcom, STA, legacy, whatever) So what do I need to do to fix it? Or is the B43-fwcutter driver broken for 12.04? Thoughts? Tips? Log files needed??

• How to prevent duplicate data access methods that retrieve similar data?

  In almost every project I work on with a team, the same problem seems to creep in. Someone writes UI code that needs data and writes a data access method: AssetDto GetAssetById(int assetId) A week later someone else is working on another part of the application and also needs an AssetDto but now including 'approvers' and writes the following: AssetDto GetAssetWithApproversById(int assetId) A month later someone needs an asset but now including the 'questions' (or the 'owners' or the 'running requests', etc): AssetDto GetAssetWithQuestionsById(int assetId) AssetDto GetAssetWithOwnersById(int assetId) AssetDto GetAssetWithRunningRequestsById(int assetId) And it gets even worse when methods like GetAssetWithOwnerAndQuestionsById start to appear. You see the pattern that emerges: an object is attached to a large object graph and you need different parts of this graph in different locations. Of course, I'd like to prevent having a large number of methods that do almost the same. Is it simply a matter of team discipline or is there some pattern I can use to prevent this? In some cases it might make sense to have separate methods, i.e. getting an asset with running requests may be expensive so I do not want to include these all the time. How to handle such cases?

• Deploy multiple emails to email providers, but without showing favouritism

  We are currently developing a new email deployment system. We have the system currently configured so that it reads a record from the database and loads the email content and deploys it to the target. Now we want to move this over to multiple threads. That is easily done, except we then hit the email providers returning SMTP codes referring to "Too many connections", or "Deferred connection". The solution to this is to have a thread open up a connection to the email provider and deploy n emails and then disconnect. We have currently configured the application so that it will support these session based email deployments. The problem is this, the database table has multiple email addresses in and they aren't grouped by email provider because that will show favouritism. We need to be able to retrieve a set number of, i.e. Hotmail, emails (@hotmail.com, @hotmail.co.uk, @live.co.uk) so that we are reducing the number of connections to Hotmail and reducing the risks of getting the "Too many connections" error. We are at the point now where we have gone round and round in circles trying to get a solution, so I thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone has any ideas? EDIT I would like to stress that this application is not used for spamming purposes.

Also, a big congratulations to all the delegates who gave up there free time to come and hear us speak and who were, in general, enthusiastic and asked some cracking questions to keep us speakers on our toes. For those who attended my Async my source code and presentation are now available on GitHub, https://github.com/westleyl/DDDNorth2-AsyncPatterns If you are new to Git then the easiest client to install is GitHub for Windows, a graphical UI for accessing GitHub. Personally, I also have TortoiseGit installed – the file explorer add-in that works in a familiar manner to TortoiseSVN. As I mentioned during the presentation I have not included the sample data, the music files, in the source code placed on GitHub but I have included instructions on how to download them from http://silents.bandcamp.com and place them in the correct folders. What I forgot to mention is that Windows Media Player by default does not play Ogg Vorbis and Flac music files, however you can download the codec installer for these, for free, from http://xiph.org/dshow. I am planning to break down this little project into a series of blog posts, with each pattern being a single blog post over several weeks. In these I will flesh out the background behind the pattern, the basic goal being achieved and how to monitor the progress of the sample data being processed. • What are some good seminar topics that can be used to improve designer&developer communication?

  Hello guys the thing I'll tell is what happens in the company I work for but I know it's more like a common issue in software companies. I'm development team leader in a internet service company that provides service that's very similar to dropbox. In our company we have mainly two divisions: the tech division and the designers division, both have their own reporting hierarchy. Designers focus on designing UI and prioritizing features, while developers focus on implement designers' ideas (more like being driven as our big boss has said). Then here comes our issue: the DEV team and DES team communicate very bad. DEV complain DES for these reasons: Too frequent changing of requirements Too complicated interaction (our DEV team has actually learned many HCI principles) Documents for design are incomplete, usually you just get 'design principles' and it's up to DEV to complete design details. When you find design defects, you ask DES team to resolve them, then DES team quickly change the principles and you gonna spend another several weeks because the change is so fundamental. While DES complain DEV for these reasons: Code architecture is not good enough to adapt to changing requirements (Obviously DES knows something about software development) Product design is about principles, not details. DEV fails to realize this. Communication should be quick and should be mainly oral. Trying to make most feature discussion in document for reference is too overloaded and doesn't make sense. As you can see, DEV and DES have different ideas on product design, and encourages very different practice. We have this difference because of the way we work. So our solution is that we should plan some seminars to make each part more aware of the way the other part work. Then my question is, what are some good topics for such seminars? Guessing some people may not think seminars can solve this problem, please also suggest your solution.

• How do install Ubuntu from a USB stick?

  When I go to the boot menu on my computer and select USB stick, the screen goes black and there comes a flickering underline. Like I could write something. But I can't. Whatever I push, nothing happens. Except the PrintScrn/SysRq button. When I push it, mu computer beeps. I get no choose menu. Nothing. I found out the usb stick is in msdos format. So what format should I use and how can I format it? I am not a computer geek who knows everything. I'm just a beginner. And only 16 years old. I've got a new problem. The screen isn't black anymore. Android Apps Windows Phone is not the only app store that needs a boost.  But unlike Windows Phone, there is a very easy way to get a lot more apps on your Windows PC: BlueStacks.  Right now BlueStacks has 3 things going against it: its UI integration is a desktop app hack, it does not work on RT, and no one know about it.  All three could be fixed if Microsoft bought the company or pulled off the same thing.  The store can be designed to give preference to Windows Store apps but it closes a lot of holes quickly. The Desktop Experience Windows should switch between desktop mode and tablet mode automatically.  Laptops without touch and desktops should work a lot more like Windows 7.  The PC should boot to desktop and Metro apps should run in windows, like MetroMix.  A tablet should boot to the Start Screen by default and pretty much work the same way it does now in 8.1.  Touch laptops should give the user an in your face option on first boot to pick the experience.  And finally, the experience can be changed automatically if the PC is docked or has external monitors hooked up. Death of the Desktop This might seem completely opposite to the last feature, but its not.  I should have no need to ever see the desktop from Start Screen mode.  Every settings needs to be available, an amazing port of the file explorer is needed, and Office Metro must be released.  Desktop apps should also be able to run in full screen mode like other Metro apps.

• Maintaining a main project line with satellite projects

  Some projects I work on have a main line of features, but are customizable per customer. Up until now those customizations have been implemented as preferences, but now there are 2 problems with the system... The settings page is getting out of control with features. There are probably some improvements that could be made to the settings UI, but regardless, it is quite cumbersome setting up new instances for new customers. Customers have started asking for customizations which would be more easily maintained as separate threads instead of having tons of customizations code. Optimally I am envisioning some kind of source control in which features are either in the main project line and customizations per customer are maintained in a repo per customer set up. The customizations per project would need to remain separate but if a bug is found and fixed in a particular project, I would need to percolate the fix back to the main line and into all of the other customer repos. The problem is I have never seen this done before, and before spending time trying to find source control that can accommodate this scenario and implement it, I figure it best to ask if anyone has something less complicated or knows of a source control product which can handle this with very little hair pulling.

  Entering your full password on a touch screen device can really become a pain in the neck, luckily for us we can link a short 4 digit PIN to our user account and log in with that instead. Note: PIN codes are nowhere near as safe as using an alphanumeric password, however, they do still have a purpose when you don’t want to enter your 15 character password on a touch screen device. Creating a PIN Press the Win + I keyboard combination to bring up the Settings Charm, then click on the Change PC settings link. This will open up the Modern UI PC Settings app, where you can click on the Users section. On the right hand side you will see a Create a PIN button, click on it. Now you will need to verify that you are the owner of this user account by entering your password. Then you can choose a PIN, remember that it can only contain digits.   I created my own Menu System that is event driven. In order to have a loading screen and multithreaded loading to work, I devised this sort of implementation: //Let's check if the game is done loading. if (_game != null) { _gameLoaded = _game.DoneLoading; } //This means the game is loading still, //therefore the loading screen should be active. if (!_gameLoaded && _gameActive) { _gameScreenList[2].UpdateMenu(); } //The loading screen was selected. if (_gameScreenList[2].CurrentState == GameScreen.State.Shown && !_gameActive) { Components.Add(_game = new ParadoxGame(this)); _game.Initialize(); //Initializes the Game so that the loading can begin. _gameActive = true; } In the XNA Game Component that contains the actual game, in the LoadContent method I simply created a new Thread that calls another method ThreadLoad that has all the actual loading. I also have a boolean variable called DoneLoading in the XNA Game Component that is set to true at the end of the ThreadLoad. I am wondering if this is a poor implementation.

• What is the best type of c# timer to use with a Unity game that uses many timers simultaneously?

  I am developing a stand-alone 3d game in Unity that will have anywhere from 1 to 200 timers running simultaneously. There will be a GameObject containing 1 timer. For this game timer durations will range from 5 minutes to 4 days. There will not be any countdown displays or any UI for the timers. Each object is a prefab, with all the necessary materials included. An attached script will handle the timer and all the necessary code to change the materials and make any sound effects. Once the timer is expired, the user will then click on the object again, and the object will be destroyed, and the user's inventory will be adjusted. If the user wants to save or end the game before all the timers are done, the start value of the still running timers is to be saved to an XML file such that when the game is started again, any still running timers will be checked to see if they have expired, where the object's materials will be changed appropriately. I am still trying to figure out what type of timer to use, and see also if there are any suggestions for saving and calculating times over several days. What class(es) of timers should I use? Are there any special issues I should look out for in terms of performance?

  Below are the release notes from today's deployment. 1. With today’s deployment we’ve made some significant changes to the source code experience. First of all, you’ll noticed that we moved the Source Code tab closer to the project home tab.   We believe that this will help make source code more discoverable and emphasizes our focus on developer collaboration. The next thing you’ll notice is that when you click on the Source Code tab, you will immediately be browsing code. We want to get you to the project source code in a minimum number of clicks, and this change helps get you there. The changeset history is still there, which brings us to the next change… We implemented an action bar in the source code section, which will make certain actions more discoverable, including forking, cloning, and downloading source code The popups in the action bar will help you perform the tasks you need to do when contributing to projects, as well as managing your own projects. Take a look at how easy it is to find the clone/connection URL now! 2. The second exciting thing we turned on this week is the ability to enable Windows Azure Web Sites to build and deploy your project source code (for Git source code projects). • What can I do to utilize all my hard disk space?

  I had windows XP running on my computer. Then I installed Ubuntu from under windows. Then I decided I wanted to have only Ubuntu also because I got a system message that I am out of disk space. I loaded up my system from a live Ubuntu DVD and deleted the partition with windows on it and also the other partition that had my data on it. I expanded the partition which I thought to be the system partition (since there was no other partition left It had ext format. After that Ubuntu was working fine and I thought I have enough disk space, since my harddrive is an 80 GB ATA Maxtor. I left a small partition as backup. But after downloading a small amount of files I got the message again, that I am running out of disk space. I don't now. How can UI make my disk space bigger? I am not used to Ubuntu's file system, and I don't have the overview on how I can actually see how much space there is left for me to use. I have basically now 1 partition with the system on it and one small backup (as far as I understand). • Mobile Web Framework that will only control rendering and page transitions

  I have been using jQueryMobile for a bit now, and there are some things I like about it and others I do not. First I will give a bit of background. I have a light weight mobile application that has a few configurations and 6 pages. Ideally I Would like to load all pages into the DOM (they interact with each other quite often and pages will be switched in the same frequency). The application will post for some JSON every n seconds and refresh the values on the page (yes it is primarily a information display app). with the jQuery Mobile framework the only real thing I like is how easy it is to have a standardized UI a crossed all devices and browsers, I'm really not using too much else out of the framework other than the basic page navigation (if you are familiar with the framework; a bare-bone multi-page design is all i need). Why I want to step away from jQueryMobile is how weighty it is. Not only do you need to include the mobile library, but also the base jQuery libraries. This I do not like because I'm not using jQuery anywhere else on the site. Any suggestions on light-weight mobile frameworks that have a similar rendering as jQueryMobile?
