• Dell Laptop's Bluetooth isn't detected by Ubuntu

  I have Dell vostro 3500 Laptop. I Installed Ubuntu 12.04. It doesn't detect my bluetooth. below is my information. lsusb | grep Bluetooth Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0a5c:4500 Broadcom Corp. I saw other place (I don't remember which site) They said, some times, when in windows, if bluetooth disabled by windows driver, It can't be enabled by linux. So, I should install windows and enable blueethooth from windows and then re install linux. That is impossible for me, because I don't have Windows installation media. But I tried this, which is I installed windows xp on virtual box. Vbox showed me thow unknow USB devices. I connected them and installed windows bluethooth drivers to xp. But it didn't ditected Bluethooth either. Also, when I set off mode in hardware switch, those unknown devices disappear from Vbox usb device seletcion menu. So, they are definitely something to do with wifi or bluethooth. Please help me..

• Ubuntu 12.10 ATI Driver 12.11 fails after compiz and xorg update

  I updated my system via the package manager from Unity and next restart was just blackness. After being here: http://linux.hootip.com/amd-catalyst-12-11-beta-fix-and-installation-the-drivers-on-ubuntu-12-11/ I had the Catalyst 12.11 Beta driver installed. I checked my /var/log/apt/history.log and the update I received was of compiz and xorg packages. I tried to get latest release info, but all I get from their pages are commit info; I can't tell what was n the package update I got served. Anyone knows what was in the latest xorg/compiz release that broke the driver? Which driver should I use now? For completeness this is how I got the system back to boot (probably lame and not elegant): Boot with GRUB selection "More Ubuntu options (or sth like that), From secondary screen select 3.5.0-19 with boot options, When system prompts on stuff you'd like to do, select "root" - Drop to root shell, There: # mount -o remount,rw / # mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failed # /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # reboot This got be back on my feet.

• Evaluating a Programmer for Startup

  Hi, I have sorted through the previous questions and couldn't find a specific answer to the following (and thank you in advance): I have fully developed my idea on paper and am looking to move forward with it, create it, and grow it. Since I am non-technical, I am looking to either partner or employ (I would pay for his/her services) for a very talented and well-rounded programmer to help create and develop the project. I am looking for someone that can act as a IT manager/CTO and get the job done while I use my resources to develop and deploy the strategy, deal with the business side of things, raise capital, grow, etc. However, due to my lack of IT knowledge, it is always hard for me to differentiate between a good and bad programmer and therefore only find out if he/she is good or not when it is too late. So my question that I have been asking everyone around me is "How do I assess whether the programmer is good or not if I cannot evaluate them myself?" and "Is there any website that reviews and rates programmers?" I have asked many to refer me to talented programmers but all are either not local (important for me to work side by side with them), happily employed or working on their own startup. I have also asked these programmers to help me find others but none seem to be able to help. Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thank you so much, HelpJ

• Demantra 7.3.1.3 Controlling MDP_MATRIX Combinations Assigned to Forecasting Tasks Using TargetTaskSize

  New 7.3.1.3 parameter: TargetTaskSize Old parameter: BranchID  Multiple, deprecated  7.3.1.3 onwards Parameter Location: Parameters > System Parameters > Engine > Proport   Default: 0   Engine Mode: Both   Details: Specifies how many MDP_MATRIX combinations the analytical engine attempts to assign to each forecasting task.  Allocation will be affected by forecsat tree branch size.  TaskTargetSize is automcatically calculated.  It holds the perferred branch size, in number of combinations in the lowest level. This parameter is adjusted to a lower value for smaller schemas, depending on the number of available engines.   - As the forecast is generated the engine goes up the tree using max_fore_level and not top_level -1.  Max_fore_level has     to be less than or equal to top_level -1.  Due to this requirement, combinations falling under the same top level -1     member must be in the same task.  A member of the top level -1 of the forecast tree is known as a branch.  An engine     task is therefore comprised of one or more branches.     - Reveal current task size       go to Engine Administrator --> View --> Branch Information and run the application on your Demantra schema.  This will be deprecated in 7.3.1.3 since there is no longer a means of adjusting the brach size directly.  The focus is now on proper hierarchy / forecast design.     - Control of tasks       The number of tasks created is the lowest of number of branches, as defined by top level -1 members in forecast       tree, and engine sessions and the value of TargetTaskSize.  You are used to using the branch multiplier in this       calculation.  As of 7.3.1.3, the branch ID multiple is deprecated.     - Discovery of current branch size       To resolve this you must review the 2nd highest level in the forecast tree (below highest/highest) as this is the       level which determines the size of the branches.  If a few resulting tasks are too large it is recommended that       the forecast tree level driving branches be revised or at times completely removed from the forecast tree.     - Control of foreacast tree branch size         - Run the following sql to determine how even the branches are being split by the engine:             select count(*),branch_id from mdp_matrix where prediction_status = 1 and do_fore = 1 group by branch_id;             This will give you an understanding if some of the individual branches have an unusually large number of           rows and thus might indicate that the engine is not efficiently dividing up the parallel tasks.         - Based on the results of this sql, we may want to adjust the branch id multiplier and/or the number of engines           (both of these settings are found in the Engine Administrator)           select count(*), level_id from mdp_matrix where prediction_status = 1 and do_fore = 1 group by level_id;           This will give us an understanding at which level of the Forecast tree where the forecast is being generated.            Having a majority of combinations higher on the forecast tree might indicate either a poorly designed forecast           tree and/or engine parameters that are too strict           Based on the results of this we would adjust the Forecast Tree to see if choosing a different hierarchy might           produce a forecast, with more combinations, at a lower level.           For example:             - Review the 2nd highest level in the forecast tree, below highest/highest, as this is the level which               determines the size of the branches.             - If a few resulting tasks are too large it is recommended that the forecast tree level driving branches               be revised or at times completely removed from the forecast tree.               - For example, if the highest level of the forecast tree is set to Brand/All Locations.             - You have 10 brands but 2 of the brands account for 67% and 29% of all combinations.             - There is a distinct possibility that the tasks resulting from these 2 branches will be too large for               a single engine to process.  Some possible solutions could be to remove the Brand level and instead               use a different product grouping which has a more even distribution, possibly Product Group.               - It is also possible to add a location dimension to this forecast tree level, for example Customer.                This will also reduce forecast tree branch size and will deliver a balanced task allocation.             - A correctly configured Forecast Tree is something that is done by the Implementation team and is               not the responsibility of Oracle Support.  Allocation will be affected by forecast tree branch size.  When TargetTaskSize is set to 0, the default value, the system automatically calculates a value for 'TargetTaskSize' depending on the number of engines.   - QUESTION:  Does this mean that if TargetTaskSize is 1, we use tree branch size to allocate branches to tasks instead                of automatically calculating the size?     ANSWER: DEV Strongly recommends that the setting of TargetTaskSize remain at the DEFAULT of ZERO (0).   - How to control the number of engines?     Determine how many CPUs are on the machine(s) that is (are) running the engine.  As mentioned earlier, the general     rule is that you should designate 2 engines per each CPU that is available.  So for example, if you are running the     engine on a machine that has 4 CPU then you can have up to 8 engines designated in the Engine Administrator.  In this     type of architecture then instead of having one 'localhost' in your Engine Settings Screen, you would have 'localhost'     repeated eight times in this field.     Where do I set the number of engines?                 To add multiples computers where engine will run, please do a back-up of Settings.xml file under         Analytical Engines\bin\ folder, then edit it and add there the selected machines.                 Example, this will allow 3 engines to start:         - <Entry>           <Key argument="ComputerNames" />           <Value type="string" argument="localhost,localhost,localhost" />           </Entry Otherwise, if there are no additional engines defined, the calculated value of 'TargetTaskSize' is used. (Oracle does not recommend changing the default value.) The TargetTaskSize holds the engines prefered branch size, in number of level 1 combinations.   - Level 1 combinations, known as group size The engine manager will use this parameter to attempt creating branches with similar size.   * The engine manager will not create engines that do not have a branch. The engine divider algorithm uses the value of 'TargetTaskSize' as a system-preferred branch size to create branches that are more equal in size which improves engine performance.  The engine divider will try to add as many tasks as possible to an existing branch, up to the limit of 'TargetTaskSize' level 1 combinations, before adding new branches.   Last year the Oracle OpenWorld team decided to use Oracle Mix as a way to select some of the papers for OpenWorld and this year we are following the same process. The majority of papers for this year's conference have already been selected, however, there are some presentation slots still available so the OpenWorld team are giving you the chance to vote on which papers you want to see at this year's OpenWorld conference.The voting process has just opened and will close on June 20.   For the past months I've been studying programming and I've finally learned how to code, but one thing that is confusing me is how to properly organize the design of a game project - code wise. The game I'm building is a pretty standard commercial game. It has the basic components of a normal game: A world, characters and items interacting with each other and all of this is run by game manager. Basically you play as a hero in a world and do stuff. Fight, explore and interact. Think of your standard adventure game that starts off with an intro, goes to the menu system, then gets into the game and back to the menu. Pretty much like 99% of any commercial game or otherwise serious game projects. Thats what I'm aiming at. The problem is: How do you properly code a commercial game architecture? How do you organize it? How do you make it not become unmaintainable spaghetti code? What specific things to keep in mind when building this, codewise? How you can help me: a) Please tell how do you code your own game projects. What is your thought-process when designing the architecture? b) Recommend books, blogs, tutorials, videos or anything else on how to organize a commercial video game. c) Give hints and tips on do's/don'ts when building a game, codewise. • How do I install iTunes?

  I have an iPhone and run Ubuntu on all of my personal computers. Since I did not want to keep a separate partition with Windows on it for the sole purpose of running iTunes, I attempted to install It using Wine. I installed Wine 1.4 from the Software Center and installed iTunes 10.6.3. When I tried to run it I got a slew of error messages. I hopped over to google where it was suggested that I install it through PlayOnLinux. I did so with the same result. Further googling revealed that iTunes 10.6.x is confirmed to work with Wine 1.5.1 and up. I installed Wine 1.5.1 following the instructions I found and was unable to get it to open. I did the same with 1.5.9 with the same results. I opened the Package Manager and installed the Wine 1.5.9 packages through it, and it appears to have installed properly. When trying to install iTunes I got he error "This iTunes installer requires Windows Vista 64 bit or later". Realizing that Wine uses XP as a default I ran winecfg and changed it to Windows 7. This changed nothing and I tried changing it through winetricks to no avail. I even changed it to Vista with the same results. Does anyone know what is going wrong here and how to fix it? Thanks

• Distinguishing the Transport Layer from the Session Layer

  In the OSI communications model, the Session layer manages the creation and removal of the association between two communicating network end points. This can also be called a connection. A connection is maintained while the network end points are communicated between each other in a conversation or session of some unknown length of time. Some connections and sessions only need to last long enough to send a message or a piece of data in one direction. In addition, some sessions may last longer, this typically occurs when one or both of the network end points are  able to terminate it the connection. The transport layer ensures that messages/data are delivered without errors, in sequence, and with no data content losses or data content duplications. It relieves the Session Layer from any concern with the transfer of data between them and their peers. Examples: Session Layer This layer acts like a manager and asks one of its employees (Transport Layer) to move a piece of data/message from one network end-point to another. Transportation Layer This layer takes the request of the Session Layer and moves the data as insturcted, it also double checks the data for any missing or corrupted information after it has been moved. If for some reason the new data does not match the old data then the Transport player will attempt to move the data gain until the data at both locations is in sync.

• Weird behavior when debugging ASP.NET Web application: cookie expires (1/1/0001 12:00AM) by itself on next breakpoint hit.

  I'm working on ajaxified (Telerik AJAX Manager) ASP.NET application using Visual Studio 2010 (runs with admin privileges) and IIS 7.5. Basically, everything on the page is inside update panels. As for cookies I have custom encrypted "settings" cookie which is added to Response if it's not there on session start. Application runs smoothly, problem was arising when I started the debugging it: Actions:  no breakpoints set, F5 - application has started in debug mode, browser window loaded. I login to site, click on controls, all is fine. Next I set *any* breakpoint somewhere in code, break on it then let it continue running, but once I break again (immediately after first break) and check cookie: it has expired date 1/1/0001 12:00AM and no data in value property. I was storing current language there, which was used inside Page's InitializeCulture event and obviously exception was being raised. I spent several hours trying deleting browser cache, temporary ASP.NET files etc, nothing seemed to work. Same application has been tested on exactly same environment on another PC and no problems with debugging there. After all I've found the solution: visual studio generates for every solution additional .suo file where additional settings are stored, like UI state, breakpoints info, etc, so I deleted it and loaded project again, tried debugging - everything is ok now.

• apt-get failed install of libg15, all package management is failing

  I was trying to get my Logitech G510 keyboard's back-lights working so I went into the Synaptic Package Manager and marked LibG15, G15daemon, and all the other associated packages. Synaptic reported a failed install. Now all Package management is failing due to libg15 being "halfway installed." Some commands I have tried to fix the problem follow. . . root@bt:~# apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: The package libg15 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. root@bt:~# sudo apt-get autoremove Reading package lists... • How to dissuade a customer who just learned a technology and wants to use it everywhere?

  My customer recently discovered what is URL Rewriting, without completely understanding what it is, how it works and the pros and cons of it. Now, he asks for lots of strange changes in actual requirements of current projects and changes in old projects in order to implement what he believes is URL Rewriting. On one hand, I'm annoyed being asked to do things which doesn't make any sense instead of doing real work. On the other hand, I can't tell my customer that he doesn't understand anything in the subject despite his interest in it. I think many people have had situations when their manager or their customer just learned a new buzzword or a new technology, and he loved it so much than he wanted to use it in every project, everywhere, rewrite the whole codebase just to use this new thing, etc. Also, I've recently read something related on Programmers.SE where people told about their experiences when there was a huge buzz around XML, and some managers would ask to introduce XML in every project just to show to everyone that they have used it. So those who have been in similar situation, how have you managed it?

  Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains.  The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove. The new java.net site is smaller, faster and now the percentage of good, current content is much higher. • Yoga Pro 2 Wi-Fi not working

  I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my new Yoga Pro 2 and the wireless is not working. It started with Windows 8 on it. The Network Manager says Wi-Fi is disabled by hardware switch. I tried putting a blacklist file in ect/modprobe.d as has been suggested in many places. I called the file "blacklist-ideapad_laptop.conf" and wrote in the file blacklist ideapad_laptop I checked to make sure that the wireless is enabled in the BIOS. It is. I ran rfkill list all and it displayed: 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 2: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes I ran iwlist wlan0 scan and it displayed: wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Network is down I ran sudo rmmod ideapad_laptop and it displayed: rmmod: ERROR: Module ideapad_laptop is not currently loaded. I ran ifconfig wlp1s0 up and it displayed: wlp1s0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device. I ran "lspci" and it displayed: 01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 6b) I ran sudo lshw -c network and it displayed: *-network DISABLED description: Wireless interface product: Wireless 7260 vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 0<br> bus info: pci@0000:01:00:0.0 logical name: wlan0 version: 6b serial: 7c:7a:91:5f:9b:fa width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwlwifi driverversion=3.13.0-24-generic firmware=22.24.8.0 latency=0 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bgn resources: irq:61 memory:b0400000-b0401fff This No wireless with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 7260 seems to be dealing with a similar issue. It suggests that I need to update my firmware. So I downloaded iwlwifi-7260-ucode-23.214.9.0 from Intel's website. I put the file "iwlwifi-7260-9.ucode" in /lib/firmware and ran "sudo lshw -c network" again. It displayed exactly as before. Is there something else I need to do install the new firmware?
