• Best design to create dynamic set of questions(controls ) in silverlight web application?

  I have around 15 templates (this will grow) and each template will have around 10-15 questions. Each question can have answers in different format like text box, list box, dropdown, radio button etc. I need to show one template in a page, at a time based on the input I am getting. What would be the best design approach for this? Put questions data in database and Create dynamic control? Putting in xml and display using xslt? Creating static set of templates? Or any other approach? I don't have too much time to do this. I am going to use Silverlight for this.

• SGEN doesn't work after upgrading from VS2008 to VS2010

  I just recently upgraded a VS2008/.NET 3.5 SP1 project to VS2010 and .NET 4. I have a post-build event which calls SGEN to generate the XmlSerializers assembly. Whenever I try to run it I get the following error. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\sgen.exe" /debug /force /verbose /c:"platform:x86" "C:\path\to\SomeAssembly.dll" Microsoft (R) Xml Serialization support utility [Microsoft (R) .NET Framework, Version 2.0.50727.3038] Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Error: An attempt was made to load an assembly with an incorrect format: c:\path\to\someassembly.dll. - Could not load file or assembly 'file:///c:\path\to\someassembly.dll' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded. If you would like more help, please type "sgen /?". I get the same error running SGEN from the command line, but I can't figure out what the problem is. Any ideas?

  Hi, I have registered an enumeration type "ClefType" within my header file - this enum is registered with the MetaObject system using the Q_DECLARE_METATYPE and Q_ENUMS macros. qRegisterMetaType is also called in the class constructor. This allows me to use this type in a Q_PROPERTY, this all works fine. However, later on, I need to be able to get hold of the Q_PROPERTY of this enum type, given the object - in a form that is suitable for serialization. Ideally, it would be useful to store the integer value for that enum member, because I don't want this to be specific to the type of enum that is used - eventually I want to have several different enums. // This is inside a loop over all the properties on a given object QMetaProperty property = metaObject->property(propertyId); QString propertyName = propertyMeta.name(); QVariant variantValue = propertyMeta.read(serializeObject); // If, internally, this QVariant is of type 'ClefType', // how do I pull out the integer value for this enum? • WCF Service Layer in n-layered application: performance considerations

  Hi all. When I went to University, teachers used to say that in good structured application you have presentation layer, business layer and data layer. This is what I heard for more than 5 years. When I started working I discovered that this is true but sometimes is better to have more than just three layers. Two or three days ago I discovered this article by John Papa that explain how to use Entity Framework in layered application. According to that article you should have: UI Layer and Presentation Layer (Model View Pattern) Service Layer (WCF) Business Layer Data Access Layer Service Layer is, to me, one of the best ideas I've ever heard since I work. Your UI is then completely "diconnected" from Business and Data Layer. Now when I went deeper by looking into provided source code, I began to have some questions. Can you help me in answering them? Question #0: is this a good enterpise application template in your opinion? Question #1: where should I host the service layer? Should it be a Windows Service or what else? Question #2: in the source code provided the service layer expose just an endpoint with WSHttpBinding. This is the most interoperable binding but (I think) the worst in terms of performances (due to serialization and deserializations of objects). Do you agree? • ServerIdentity memory leak with IHttpAsyncHandler

  I have a .NET web application that consists of a single HTTP handler class that implements IHttpAsyncHandler. All requests to this handler are handled asynchronously, though some requests are short-lived and some are long-lived (nothing over a few seconds). The problem is that memory consumption grows over time as requests are handled. All profiling results point to an unbounded growth of String objects held by instances of System.Runtime.Remoting.ServerIdentity. Every String value is different, but they all look similar to: /dd41c00e_1566_4702_b660_c81cdea18a43/vigefresi5pfv8n0ekddg57z_1154.rem There is nothing in my application that uses ServerIdentity directly, and unless I am mistaken, the ServerIdentity instances are proportional to the number of incoming requests. If this is an internal .NET structure, it looks like the CLR is not cleaning up after itself. What could be causing the leak? UPDATE A little less than half of the String objects are being held by System.Runtime.Remoting. The remaining String objects are being held by System.Runtime.Serialization and look similar to: +1sgess5rjcrgbmp3kqr6bmv_3474.rem Also, the problem only seems to occur when lots of simultaneous HTTP web requests arrive.

• Debugger Visualizer, ElementHost, and Edit and Continue problems

  I recently wrote a custom Debugger Visualizer for Visual Studio 2008 for one of the custom types in my application. The UI for the visualizer is written in WPF and is hosted in an element host and shown using the IDialogVisualizerService windowService object. Everything works great, and my visualizer loads and shows the relevant information, but if try to "edit and continue" in my application after loading the visualizer, Visual Studio crashes with no useful error message. In trying to debug this I removed almost all of my code from the solution to the point where I was only serializing a string with the ObjectSource and displaying just an empty element host and I still get the crash on edit and continue. If I remove the element host and show a WinForms control or form there is no crash.   UPDATE: I found that the reason for the previous error was an error in the documentation. The method should be named proxyForJson, not jsonProxyObject... But I'm still stuck, though. I now get an EXC_BAD_ACCESS error inside stringWithObject some where. Any clues? UPDATE 2: My proxyForJson implementation is a cut-n-paste from then documentation: - (id)proxyForJson { return [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys: Navn, @"Navn", Adresse, @"Adresse", Alder, @"Alder", nil]; } Trying to make json serialization work for my custom objective-c class. As I understand the documentation, json-framework can serialize custom objects, if they implement the jsonProxyObject method. • Creating instance of a service-side DataContract class on client-side in WCF

  Hi, I have my custom class Customer with its properties. I added DataContract mark above the class and DataMember to properties and it was working fine, but I'm calling a service class's function, passing customer instance as parameter and some of my properties get 0 values. While debugging I can see my properties values and after it gets to the function, some properties' values are 0. Why it can be so? There's no code between this two actions. DataContract mark workes fine, everything's ok. Any suggestions on this issue? I tried to change ByRef to ByVal, but it doesn't change anything. Why it would pass other values right and some of integer types just 0? Maybe the answer is simple, but I can't figure it out. • Integrating a Custom Compiler with the Visual Studio IDE

  Background: I want to create a custom VB compiler, extending the "original" compiler, to handle my custom compile-time attributes. Question: after I've created my custom compiler and I've got an executable file capable of compiling VB code via the standard command-line interface, how do I integrate this compiler with the Visual Studio IDE? (such that pressing "compile" or "build" will make use of my compiler instead of the default compiler). EDIT: (Correct me if i'm wrong) From the reactions here, I see this question is a bit shocking, so I shall further explain my needs and background: .NET provides us with a great mechanism called Attributes. As far as I understand, making attributes apply their intended behavior upon the attributed element (assembly, module, class, method, etc.) - attributes must be reflected upon. So the real trick here is reflecting and applying behavior at the right spot. Lets take Serialization for example: We decorate a class with the Serializable attribute. We then pass an instance of the class to the formatter's Serialize method. The formatter reflects upon the instance, checking if it has the Serializable attribute, and acting accordingly. Now, if we examine the Synchronization, Flags, Obsolete and CLSCompliant attributes, then the real question is: who reflects upon them? At least in some cases, it has to be the compiler (and/or IDE). Therefore, it seems that if I wish to create custom attributes that change an element's behavior regardless of any specific consumer, i must extend the compiler to reflect upon them at compilation. Of course, these are not my personal insights: the book "Applied .NET Attributes" provides a complete example of creating a custom attribute and a custom C# compiler to reflect upon that attribute at compilation (the example is used to implement "java-style checked exceptions").

If I remove the DataContract attribute from class Bar, the WCF service fails saying Type 'BarProxy3bb05a31167f4ba492909ec941a54533' with data contract name 'BarProxy3bb05a31167f4ba492909ec941a54533:http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/' is not expected. Add any types not known statically to the list of known types - for example, by using the KnownTypeAttribute attribute or by adding them to the list of known types passed to DataContractSerializer I've tried adding a KnownType attribute to the foo class [KnownType(typeof(Bar))] But I still get the same error. • call/cc in Lua - Possible?

  The Wikipedia article on Continuation says: "In any language which supports closures, it is possible to write programs in continuation passing style and manually implement call/cc." Either that is true and I need to know how to do it or it is not true and that statement needs to be corrected. If this is true, please show me how to implement call/cc in Lua because I can't see how. I think I'd be able to implement call/cc manually if Lua had the coroutine.clone function as explained here. If closures are not enough to implement call/cc then what else is needed? The text below is optional reading. P.S.: Lua has one-shot continuations with its coroutine table. A coroutine.clone function would allow me to clone it to call it multiple times, thus effectively making call/cc possible (unless I misunderstand call/cc). However that cloning function doesn't exist in Lua. Someone on the Lua IRC channel suggested that I use the Pluto library (it implements serialization) to marshal a coroutine, copy it and then unmarshal it and use it again. While that would probably work, I am more interested in the theoretical implementation of call/cc and in finding what is the actual minimum set of features that a language needs to have in order to allow for its manual implementation.

  I have a Moose class that i would like to store using Apache::Session::File. However, Apache::Session::File by default will not store it and instead i get the error message: (in cleanup) Can't store CODE items at blib\lib\Storable.pm (autosplit into blib\lib\auto\Storable\_freeze.al)... This problem can be circumvented by setting $Storable::Deparse = 1; $Storable::Eval = 1; in order to allow CODE references to be serialized. The offending method in the Moose class is listed below, which retrieves a column from a mysql database: sub _build_cell_generic { my ($self,$col) = @_; my $sth = $self->call_dbh('prepare','select '.$col.' from '.$self->TABLE.' where CI = ? and LAC = ? and IMPORTDATE = ?'); $sth->execute($self->CI,$self->LAC,$self->IMPORTDATE); my $val = $sth->fetchrow_array; $sth->finish; return defined $val ? $val : undef; } So presumably the dbh object (isa DBIx::Connector) contains CODE references. • Why is the 'Named Domain Class' tool missing in the DSL Designer category in the toolbox ?

  I have the Domain-Specific development with VS DSL Tools book by Cook, Jones, et.all The book and various tutorials online mention a NamedDomainClass tool that should be present in the DSL Designer toolbox. I have installed VS 2010 beta 2 on Win XP - however this tool is missing in the toolbox. I've created a project using the Minimal project template as mentioned in the book. I have 12 tools showing up including the Domain Class tool. I've searched online and apparently no one else has this problem. Can someone confirm that it's missing in VS 2010 Beta 2? If not how can I get it to show up ? Is there any way in which I can add a Domain class instance and tweak it so that it becomes a Named Domain Class? The book mentions that there is some must-be-unique validation and serialization changes that are done by the NamedDomainClass tool. I've tried 'Choose Items' context menu on the DSL Designer category. These tools apparently are added dynamically ; do not show up in the lists on the dialog that comes up.

• Are there any radix/patricia/critbit trees for Python?

  I have about 10,000 words used as a set of inverted indices to about 500,000 documents. Both are normalized so the index is a mapping of integers (word id) to a set of integers (ids of documents which contain the word). My prototype uses Python's set as the obvious data type. When I do a search for a document I find the list of N search words and their corresponding N sets. I want to return the set of documents in the intersection of those N sets. Python's "intersect" method is implemented as a pairwise reduction. I think I can do better with a parallel search of sorted sets, so long as the library offers a fast way to get the next entry after i. I've been looking for something like that for some time. Years ago I wrote PyJudy but I no longer maintain it and I know how much work it would take to get it to a stage where I'm comfortable with it again. I would rather use someone else's well-tested code, and I would like one which supports fast serialization/deserialization. I can't find any, or at least not any with Python bindings. There is avltree which does what I want, but since even the pair-wise set merge take longer than I want, I suspect I want to have all my operations done in C/C++. Do you know of any radix/patricia/critbit tree libraries written as C/C++ extensions for Python? Failing that, what is the most appropriate library which I should wrap? The Judy Array site hasn't been updated in 6 years, with 1.0.5 released in May 2007. (Although it does build cleanly so perhaps It Just Works.)

I'm using Seam2.2.0GA with the embeded JBoss to run the unit test, the module needs to call old JBoss server (EJB2, because the vendor locked in JCA has to deploy on old JBoss). it's typical seam test case, and I can't get it connect to JBoss4.0.5GA by using jbossall-client.jar from JBoss4.0.5GA. so far I tested the embeded JBoss can only working with JBoss5.X server. with JBoss4.2.3GA, it report: [testng] java.rmi.MarshalException: Failed to communicate.
