  • Audio Streaming API's: Wifi vs what?

    - by Moshe
I've noticed certain radio apps, that some stations required wifi and others did not. What were those other stations possibly using? Are there other methods of streaming audio on iOS? Apparently, I was not clear in my question before. I'm asking in terms of API's. Is there an API to interact directly with say, FM radio, on iOS? Is wifi the only way of streaming audio?

  • Events convention - I don't get it

    - by bobjink
My class with an event: public class WindowModel { public delegate void WindowChangedHandler(object source, WindowTypeEventArgs e); public event WindowChangedHandler WindowChanged; public void GotoWindow(WindowType windowType) { this.currentWindow = windowType; this.WindowChanged.Invoke(this, new WindowTypeEventArgs(windowType)); } } Derived event class: public class WindowTypeEventArgs : EventArgs { public readonly WindowType windowType; public WindowTypeEventArgs(WindowType windowType) { this.windowType = windowType; } } Some other class that register it to the event: private void SetupEvents() { this.WindowModel.WindowChanged += this.ChangeWindow; } private void ChangeWindow(object sender, WindowTypeEventArgs e) { //change window } What have I gained from following the .Net convention? It would make more sense to have a contract like this public delegate void WindowChangedHandler(WindowType windowType); public event WindowChangedHandler WindowChanged; Doing it this way, I don't need to create a new class and is easier to understand. I am not coding a .Net library. This code is only going to be used in this project. I like conventions but am I right when I say that in this example it does not make sense or have i missunderstood something?

  • How to create anonymous objects of type IQueryable using LINQ

    - by Soham Dasgupta
Hi, I'm working in an ASP.NET MVC project where I have created a two LinqToSQL classes. I have also created a repository class for the models and I've implemented some methods like LIST, ADD, SAVE in that class which serves the controller with data. Now in one of the repository classes I have pulled some data with LINQ joins like this. private HerculesCompanyDataContext Company = new HerculesCompanyDataContext(); private HerculesMainDataContext MasterData = new HerculesMainDataContext(); public IQueryable TRFLIST() { var info = from trfTable in Company.TRFs join exusrTable in MasterData.ex_users on trfTable.P_ID equals exusrTable.EXUSER select new { trfTable.REQ_NO, trfTable.REQ_DATE, exusrTable.USER_NAME, exusrTable.USER_LNAME, trfTable.FROM_DT, trfTable.TO_DT, trfTable.DESTN, trfTable.TRAIN, trfTable.CAR, trfTable.AIRPLANE, trfTable.TAXI, trfTable.TPURPOSE, trfTable.STAT, trfTable.ROUTING }; return info; } Now when I call this method from my controller I'm unable to get a list. What I want to know is without creating a custom data model class how can I return an object of anonymous type like IQueryable. And because this does not belong to any one data model how can refer to this list in the view.

  • Can foreground threads be aborted on application shutdown in C#.Net?

    - by Cartman
I inherited a c# winforms app (.NET 2.0) which creates a thread upon startup in a singleton class. This thread handles messages from a messaging topic (Tibco EMS). When the app is shutdown, the thread doesn't remain the the background? How is this possible? Is there something else happening that can abort this thread? Code snippet: public class Startup { public static void main(string [] args) { MySingletonClass.Instance.Init(); // do other things below Application.Run(new MainForm()); } public class MySingletonClass { // singleton code //.. //.. private Thread t; public void Init() { t = new Thread(new ThreadStart(poll)); } private void poll() { while(true} { // listen for messages and process but there is no break clause // exceptions are also handled within to ensure control doesnt go out } } Pls. don't write to tell me this is bad code. I know it and i was going to refactor it when i realised that the app actually shutdowns correctly inspite of this aberration. So i want to understand how this is possible. Thanks for your help

  • c# threading and getting COM port of attached phone

    - by I__
i have the following code: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; using System.Threading; namespace WindowsFormsApplication1 { public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } public class ThreadWork { public static void DoWork() { } } private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { ThreadStart myThreadDelegate = new ThreadStart(ThreadWork.DoWork); Thread myThread = new Thread(myThreadDelegate); myThread.Start(); // Begin communications serialPort1.Open(); serialPort1.Write("AT+CMGF=1\r\n"); //Thread.Sleep(500); serialPort1.Write("AT+CNMI=2,2\r\n"); //Thread.Sleep(500); serialPort1.Write("AT+CSCA=\"+4790002100\"\r\n"); //Thread.Sleep(500); } private void serialPort1_DataReceived_1(object sender, System.IO.Ports.SerialDataReceivedEventArgs e) { string response = serialPort1.ReadLine(); this.BeginInvoke(new MethodInvoker(() => textBox1.AppendText(response + "\r\n"))); } } } what i am trying to do is send AT COMMANDS to my phone which is attached to the computer through USB how do i know how to configure the properties of the serial port? (like which COM is the phone on [it's attached through USB], what about baudrate and databits?) when i run the program nothing really happens, i would like to send AT COMMANDS to my phone and the textbox is there to receive the response from my phone this is my first time using threads. am i using them correctly? what is the purpose of it in the current example? is it to just have a delay between send a response? what am i doing wrong?

  • How to detect slow internet connections?

    - by Starx
Currently, most of the popular websites, like google, yahoo detect if the user connection speed is slow and then give a option to load basic version of the website instead of the high end one. What are the methods available to detect slow internet connections? P.S. I think this is achieved through javascript, so I will tag it as a javascript question? However, I am looking for answers oriented more towards PHP, if this is also server related.

  • Java Detect Variable Change Using PropertyChangeSupport and PropertyChangeListener

    - by Sam
I'm trying to print out debug statements when some third party code changes a variable. For example, consider the following: public final class MysteryClass { private int secretCounter; public synchronized int getCounter() { return secretCounter; } public synchronized void incrementCounter() { secretCounter++; } } public class MyClass { public static void main(String[] args) { MysteryClass mysteryClass = new MysteryClass(); // add code here to detect calls to incrementCounter and print a debug message } I don't have the ability to change the 3rd party MysteryClass, so I thought that I could use PropertyChangeSupport and PropertyChangeListener to detect changes to the secretCounter: public class MyClass implements PropertyChangeListener { private PropertyChangeSupport propertySupport = new PropertyChangeSupport(this); public MyClass() { propertySupport.addPropertyChangeListener(this); } public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent evt) { System.out.println("property changing: " + evt.getPropertyName()); } public static void main(String[] args) { MysteryClass mysteryClass = new MysteryClass(); // do logic which involves increment and getting the value of MysteryClass } } Unfortunately, this did not work and I have no debug messages printed out. Does anyone see what is wrong with my implementation of the PropertyChangeSupport and Listener interfaces? I want to print a debug statement whenever incrementCounter is called or the value of secretCounter changes.

  • What is the cost of object creating.

    - by Tony
Hi If I have to choose between static method and creating an instance and use instance method, I will choose static methods always. but what is the detailed overhead of creating an instance? for example I saw a DAL which can be done with static classes but they choose to make it instance now in the BLL at every single call they call something like. new Customer().GetData(); how far this can be bad? Thanks

  • instantiate object with reflection using constructor arguments

    - by justin
I'm trying to figure out how to instantiate a case class object with reflection. Is there any support for this? The closest I've come is looking at scala.reflect.Invocation, but this seems more for executing methods that are a part of an object. case class MyClass(id:Long, name:String) def instantiate[T](className:String)(args:Any*) : T = { //your code here } Is close to the API I'm looking for. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Java Graphics not displaying on successive function calls, why?

    - by primehunter326
Hi, I'm making a visualization for a BST implementation (I posted another question about it the other day). I've created a GUI which displays the viewing area and buttons. I've added code to the BST implementation to recursively traverse the tree, the function takes in coordinates along with the Graphics object which are initially passed in by the main GUI class. My idea was that I'd just have this function re-draw the tree after every update (add, delete, etc...), drawing a rectangle over everything first to "refresh" the viewing area. This also means I could alter the BST implementation (i.e by adding a balance operation) and it wouldn't affect the visualization. The issue I'm having is that the draw function only works the first time it is called, after that it doesn't display anything. I guess I don't fully understand how the Graphics object works since it doesn't behave the way I'd expect it to when getting passed/called from different functions. I know the getGraphics function has something to do with it. Relevant code: private void draw(){ Graphics g = vPanel.getGraphics(); tree.drawTree(g,ORIGIN,ORIGIN); } vPanel is what I'm drawing on private void drawTree(Graphics g, BinaryNode<AnyType> n, int x, int y){ if( n != null ){ drawTree(g, n.left, x-10,y+10 ); if(n.selected){ g.setColor(Color.blue); } else{ g.setColor(Color.gray); } g.fillOval(x,y,20,20); g.setColor(Color.black); g.drawString(n.element.toString(),x,y); drawTree(g,n.right, x+10,y+10); } } It is passed the root node when it is called by the public function. Do I have to have: Graphics g = vPanel.getGraphics(); ...within the drawTree function? This doesn't make sense!! Thanks for your help.

  • Templates in C#

    - by John Doe
I know generics are in C# to fulfill a role similar to C++ templates but I really need a way to generate some code at compile time - in this particular situation it would be very easy to solve the problem with C++ templates. Does anyone know of any alternatives? Perhaps a VS plug-in that preprocesses the code or something like that? It doesn't need to be very sophisticated, I just need to generate some methods at compile time.

  • Is the "lock" statement in C# time-consuming?

    - by markattwood
I have a method which has been called many times by other methods to hash data. Inside the method, some lock statements are used. Could you please let me know whether the lock statement is time-consuming and what is the best way to improve it. P/S: I have been finding a way to avoid using the lock statement in this method.

  • Reverse engineering and redistributing code from .NET Framework

    - by ToxicAvenger
Once or twice I have been running into the following issue: Classes I want to reuse in my applications (and possibly redistribute) exist in the .NET Framework assemblies, but are marked internal or private. So it is impossible to reuse them directly. One way is to disassemble them, pick the pieces you need, put them in a different namespace, recompile (this can be some effort, but usually works quite well). My question is: Is this legal? Is this only legal for the classes of the Framework which are available as source code anyway? Is it illegal? I think that Microsoft marks them internal or private primarily so that they don't have to support them or can change the interfaces later. But some pieces - be it SharePoint or WCF - are almost impossible to properly extend by only using public classes from the apis. And rewriting everything from scratch generates a huge amount of effort, before you even start solving the problem you intended to solve. This is in my eyes not a "dirty" approach per se. The classes Microsoft ships are obviously well tested, if I reuse them under a different namespace I have "control" over them. If Microsoft changes the original implementation, my code won't be affected (some internals in WCF changed quite a bit with v4). It is not a super-clean approach. I would much prefer Microsoft making several classes public, because there are some nice classes hidden inside the framework.

  • Supported Linq for WCF Data Services

    - by jfar
I'm looking for the full list of supported linq extension methods that are compatible with WCF Data Services. By trial and error I've found First() and Single() aren't supported, any others? This gives me a pretty good idea of whats supported, I just don't know whats actually translated via the IQueryProvider.

  • JLabel transparency problem

    - by Rendicahya
    I have a dark-gray JPanel with a JLabel on it. I set new Color(0, 0, 0, .5f) (tranparent) as the background of the JLabel and I change the text several times using a button. The problem is, everytime the text is changed, the previous text still remains behind the new text. I change the text from "123456789" to "1234567", "12345" and "123". Here is the screenshot: How do I get rid of this "shadow"? Here's the code: public class TransparentJLabel extends JFrame { private int i = 0; private String[] value = {"123456789", "1234567", "12345", "123", "1"}; public TransparentJLabel() { setSize(300, 160); setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); setLayout(null); JPanel panel = new JPanel(); panel.setBackground(new Color(102, 102, 102)); panel.setLayout(null); panel.setBounds(0, 0, 300, 160); final JLabel label = new JLabel(); label.setText(value[0]); label.setFont(new Font("Times New Roman", 1, 36)); label.setForeground(new Color(255, 255, 255)); label.setBackground(new Color(0, 0, 0, .5f)); label.setHorizontalAlignment(SwingConstants.CENTER); label.setOpaque(true); label.setBounds(10, 10, 270, 70); JButton button = new JButton(); button.setText("Change"); button.setBounds(100, 90, 90, 25); button.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { label.setText(value[++i]); } }); panel.add(label); panel.add(button); add(panel); } public static void main(String[] args) { EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { new TransparentJLabel().setVisible(true); } }); } }

  • How come JFrame window size in Java does not produce the size of window specified?

    - by typoknig
    Hi all, I am just messing around trying to make a game right now, but I have had this problem before too. When I specify a specific window size (1024 x 768 for instance) the window produced is just a little larger than what I specified. Very annoying. Is there a reason for this? How do I correct it so the window created is actually the size I want instead of being just a little bit bigger? Up till now I have always just gone back and manually adjusted the size a few pixels at a time until I got the result I wanted, but that is getting old. If there was even a formula I could use that would tell me how many pixels I needed to add/subtract from my my variable that would be excellent! P.S. I don't know if my OS could be a factor in this, but I am using W7X64. private int windowWidth = 1024; private int windowHeight = 768; public SomeWindow() { this.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); this.setSize(windowWidth, windowHeight); this.setResizable(false); this.setLocation(0,0); this.setVisible(true); }

  • using threads in menu options

    - by vbNewbie
I have an app that has a console menu with 2/3 selections. One process involves uploading a file and performing a lengthy search process on its contents, whilst another process involves SQL queries and is an interactive process with the user. I wish to use threads to allow one process to run and the menu to offer the option for the second process to run. However you cannot run the first process twice. I have created threads and corrected some compilation errors but the threading options are not working correctly. Any help appreciated. main... Dim tm As Thread = New Thread(AddressOf loadFile) Dim ts As Thread = New Thread(AddressOf reports) .... While Not response.Equals("3") Try Console.Write("Enter choice: ") response = Console.ReadLine() Console.WriteLine() If response.Equals("1") Then Console.WriteLine("Thread 1 doing work") tm.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA) tm.IsBackground = True tm.Start() response = String.Empty ElseIf response.Equals("2") Then Console.WriteLine("Starting a second Thread") ts.Start() response = String.Empty End If ts.Join() tm.Join() Catch ex As Exception errormessage = ex.Message End Try End While I realize that a form based will be easier to implement with perhaps just calling different forms to handle the processes. But I really dont have that option now since the console app will be added to api later. But here are my two processes from the menu functions. Also not sure what to do with the boolean variabel again as suggested below. Private Sub LoadFile() Dim dialog As New OpenFileDialog Dim response1 As String = Nothing Dim filepath As String = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.MyDocuments) dialog.InitialDirectory = filepath If dialog.ShowDialog() = DialogResult.OK Then fileName = dialog.FileName ElseIf DialogResult.Cancel Then Exit Sub End If Console.ResetColor() Console.Write("Begin Search -- Discovery Search, y or n? ") response1 = Console.ReadLine() If response1 = "y" Then Search() ElseIf response1 = "n" Then Console.Clear() main() End If isRunning = False End Sub and the second one Private Shared Sub report() Dim rptGen As New SearchBlogDiscovery.rptGeneration Console.WriteLine("Tread Process started") rptGen.main() Console.WriteLine("Thread Process ended") isRunning = False End Sub
