• 14.04 LTS Unity no longer boots after last 94 MB update

  I am running 14.04 LTS, Unity, on an HP Pavillion 15, 4GBRAM, 750 GB hdd, I-5 machine, with AMD 8600M graphics card built in. I have disabled the dash and all Ubuntu spyware. I have been faithfully loading all updates as they appear. This morning it asked for a 94 MB update (bringing kernel to .27, I think. Now, I can boot, get to login screen, but it freezes after that. Keyboard doesn't work at that point, but mouse does. I booted into recovery mode, tried to run in generic graphics mode, -- system again froze. I also pressed [esc] during boot, but saw nothing strange; then text disappeared and was replaced by login screen. I am not a hobbyist; this is a production machine and I have a lot of work to do today. Having a standard software update render my machine completely useless... sigh. Perhaps the simplest thing to do would be to revert to the previous configuration. How do I do that? I can boot into recovery mode. But I have no idea how to proceed. TIA for all help. -Harry

• Can't change settings for Mobile Broadband Dongle - Button is greyed out

  I was with VirginBroadband.com.au (Australia). My huawai 3G Dongle was working great on Ubuntu, However I have changed ISP's. I unlocked the modem, and put in the new SIM. I have tested this in my Windows PC and it connects to the new (Optus) Network A-OK and it all works. When I put this dongle (the same one that was working fine in Ubuntu) into that same Ubuntu Netbook it simply won't connect. When I try to go into the dialog to try and add or change settings the button to change or update settings is greyed out, I can't select it. Apparently since this dongle was already recognized the Broadband Setup Wizard won't start, and I have no idea how to get it to start (presuming it has the ability to configure an already recognized dongle). What do I have to do to either enable the ability to change the configuration for this setup, or to blow away the one that is set up so the Broadband Wizard will re-start and let me configure a new one. Can anyone provide simple instructions for doing this? I'm using Ubuntu with the Cinnamon Desktop

• XenServer migrate machines between hosts

  I have a XenServer 5.6 Free setup with 5 VMs (Windows and Linux) using about 1.5TB of directly attached storage. Because our virtualisation needs have grown a bit, we currently are preparing a faster XenServer 6.0 Free machine with more RAM and a more storage. Again, directly attached disks. How can I migrate the VMs between XenServer machines? I don't need to keep the machines up and running during migration, but using VM export and import would definitely take too long. Would making a VM with the same configuration on new host and dd'ing the LVM volume over network be the only quick and least painful solution? Are there any "gotchas" I should look out for when doing something like this? The old machine has an AMD Phenom II, the new has Intel Xeon E5 CPUs.

• Issues with DHCP over multiple subnets

  I have a cisco router configured to handle multiple subnets (10.1.10.n, 10.2.10.n, etc), and an ubuntu system serving DHCP to the computers served by the router. After a restart of the DHCP, the systems on the 10.1 subnet are fine, but neither the server or the computers configured on the other subnets can see the router at 10.2.10.1 (or 10.3.10.1, or 10.4.10.1). The router can see itself at 10.2.10.1, however. The change that caused this was restarting the server, so I'm approaching it assuming the configuration error is on that end. Is that the likely issue or is there a different problem that would prevent the machines on the 10.2.10 subnet from resolving DHCP?

• HP Officejet 6000 E609n unexpectedly goes offline

  My local library has a number of Windows Vista SP1 PCs connected to two HP Officejet 6000 E609n wireless printers. Each PC can print to either of the two printers and one of the two printers is the default on each PC. This configuration has worked well over the last year w/o any trouble. Recently, the library staff is reporting that sometimes when patrons try to print, they can't. Closer inspection shows that the the default wireless printer is offline. In order to get the printer online again, the printer has to be restarted. In Control Panel Printers applet, under the Printer menu, the "Use Printer Offline" option is grayed out and there's no way to bring the printer back online w/o restarting it. Does anyone know what's going on here?

• Nginx no static files after update

  First, i must say that i am not expert in server administration, my site was setup by hosting admins (that i cannot contact anymore). Few days ago, i updated Nginx to latest version (admin told me that it is safe to do). But after that, my site serves only html content, no CSS, images, JS. If i try to open some image i get message "Wellcome to Nginx" (same thin if i try to open static.mysitedomain.com). More details: Site has static. subdomain, but static files are in same directory as they used to be before setting up static files. I was googling for some solutions, i tried to change something in /etc/nginx/, but no luck. I feel that this is some minor configuration problem, any ideas?   On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible? I am able to telnet to fe80::21f:a4ff:fe91:2e44%4, view the console UI & can do settings. I can also open 192.168.1.1(IPv4 address of modem/router) in browser. I tried [fe80::21f:a4ff:fe91:2e44] in all browsers like IE, Firefox & Chrome. It was not possible.

Currently they are on an owned email server and I am collecting emails via IMAP protocol (i would not like to use POP..) in Thunderbird. I have a few partners and I want to allow them to access the same email address. Here is what I desired: All users can open All the inboxes via IMAP @ Thunderbird (with proper configuration) at the same time, there are a webmail system, every user can login their account (userA, userB, userC), and they will see all inboxes (email@domain1, email@domain2, email@domain3) Would you recommend any suite that fits my needs?   Purpose Over the last year or more I've been learning unit testing via books I've read recently like The Art of Unit Testing, Working Effectively with Legacy Code, and others. I've also been using unit tests, mocking frameworks, and the like, periodically at work and definitely see the value. However, I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around TDD (as opposed to TAD) when the situation calls for code that is gong to mostly use external API calls. Problem to solve Get the process associated with a windows service using the service name. example: Function GetProcess(ByVal serviceName As String) As Process Rules Show each major iteration in production & test code using TDD No need to see any other code or configuration that is required to get things to run. Just curious about the interfaces, concrete classes, and test methods. C# or VB.NET Must use the .Net framework regarding services/processes (i.e. System.Diagnostics.Process) Test Frameworks: Nunit or MSTest Isolation Frameworks: Moq, Rhino Mock, or Microsoft Moles Must write true unit tests (no integration tests) Additional notes As far as I can tell there are two approaches design wise. Use an Inversion of Control approach along with using the Adapter and/or Facade patterns to wrap the underlying .net framework objects dealing with processes and services. Keep the .net framework code in the class containing the Get Process method and use code detouring (interception) via Microsoft Moles to isolate the hard dependencies from the method under test.

• Undeliverable messages to newly migrated Exchange user

  We are in the process of migrating from our old domain to a new one, part of which involves migrating mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. A bunch of users have been migrated already without problems. However, one of the users is having trouble receiving emails from others. When someone sends to him, they get an Undeliverable NDR that says "A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients." The message shows the user's distinguished name as /OU=OurDomain/CN=Recipients/CN=USER57137172. The user's account name should just be "USER", so I don't know where the extra numbers ("57137172") are coming from. Thanks in advance.

  Hi I'm working on some software, that runs on a Centos 5.xx installation. I'ts not allowed for our customers to log in to Linux, everything is done from Windows applications, developed by us. So we have build a frontend for the user to configure network setup: Static/DHCP, ip-address, gateway, DNS, Hostname. Right now I let the user enter the information in the Windows app, and then write it on the Linux server like this: Write to /etc/resolv.conf: Nameserver Write to /etc/sysconfig/network: Gateway and Hostname Write to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0: Ipaddress, Netmask, Bootproto(DHCP or Static) I also (after some time) found out that I was unable to send mail, unless I wrote in /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 Hostname All this seems to work, but is there a better/easier way to do this? Also, I read the network configuration nearly the same way, but if I use DHCP, I miss som information, for instance the Ip-address. I know that I can get some information from the commandline (ifconfig), but I dont get for instance Hostname, Gateway and DNS. Is there a commandline tool that will display this?

  In October 2011 the premier support for Sun Cluster 3.1 ended. See details in Oracle Lifetime Support Policy for Oracle and Sun System Software document. There no 'Extended Support' and the 'Sustaining Support Ends' is indefinite. But for indefinite 'Sustaining Support' I like to point out from the mentioned document (version Sept. 2011) on page 5: Sustaining Support does NOT include: * New program updates, fixes, security alerts, general maintenance releases, selected functionality releases and documentation updates or upgrade tools * Certification with most new third-party products/versions and most new Oracle products * 24 hour commitment and response guidelines for Severity 1 service requests *Previously released fixes or updates that Oracle no longer supports This means Solaris 10 9/10 update9 is the last qualified release for Sun Cluster 3.1. So, Sun Cluster 3.1 is not qualified on Solaris 10 8/11 Update10. Furthermore there is an issue around with SVM patch 145899-06 or higher. This SVM patch is part of Solaris 10 8/11 Update10. The 145899-06 is the first released patch of this number, therefore the support for Sun Cluster 3.1 ends with the previous SVM patches 144622-01 and 139967-02. For details about the known problem with SVM patch 145899-06 please refer to doc 1378828.1. Further this means you should freeze (no patching, no upgrade) your Sun Cluster 3.1 configuration not later than Solaris 10 9/10 update9. Or even better plan an upgrade to Solaris Cluster 3.3 now to get back to full support.

• Create Virtual Image of Laptop before Formatting

  I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

    After reviewing the book in more detail I say again that it is a great guide for sure. Lots of important concepts that sometimes can be somewhat confusing are deeply reviewed, including all types of caching schemes and backing maps, and the cache topologies with their corresponding performances and very useful "When to use it?" sections. Some functionalities that are very desirable or used a lot are reviewed with examples and best practices of implementation, including: Data affinity Querying Pagination Indexes Aggregations Event processing, listening and triggering Data persistence Security Regarding the networking and architecture topics, Coherence*Extend is exhaustively reviewed, including C++ and .NET clients, with very good tips and examples, even including source codes. Personally, I am also glad to see that the address providers (<address-provider> tag), new feature in Coherence 3.5 which is a way to programmatically provide well-known addresses in order to connect to the cluster, is mentioned on the book, because it provides new functionalities to satisfy some special configuration requirements for example: Provide a way to switch extend nodes in cases of failure Implement custom load balancing algorithms and/or dynamic discovery of TCP/IP connection acceptors Dynamically assign TCP address and port settings when binding to a server socket Another very interesting and useful section is the "Coherent Bank Sample Application", which is a great tutorial, useful to understand how Coherence interacts with third party products establishing a clear integration with them, including the use of non-Oracle products like MS Visual Studio.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. • Computer prints blank pages before and after content

  This would seem like a pretty simple question but I have exhausted every idea I can come up with. I bought a brand new Dell Latitude E5410 not too long ago with Windows 7 OS. I installed office 2010 on the machine right away and have had a printing problem since day one. For some reason every time I print a page, a blank page prints out before and after the content print. This also applies to any other application such as notepad or printing an email. If I have a 6 page document, it still prints out one page before and after every content page. Meaning I get my 6 page document along with 12 blank pages. I can't figure out why this would be some sort of default setting or what would cause this printing configuration. I am the only computer on the network that has this problem and quite frankly I'm getting tired of it. Can anyone help me figure this out or steer me in the right direction to correcting this problem?

  I just got setup with CentOS yesterday through GoDaddy, and today I'm trying to get into the server and start setting up some of my projects. I'm able to get in through PuTTY just fine, but I'm not able to connect through FTP with the same (root) account. I'm using Simple Control Panel, and have ensured that "Enable Server" is checked beneathSystem Configuration > FTP. Further, I've checked, and double checked that my root password is correct when providing the FTP details. Is there some other common setting I'm missing here that will prevent me from getting connected to the server to begin transfering files?
