  • Automate GUI tasks?

    I have a Windows application which is deadware, and it lacks the option of exporting data into a file. The only way to extract data is to copy each line into the clipboard, and paste it in an editor. As a work-around, I'm thinking of recording the action once, and loop through it until it reaches the last line in the application. I know there are quite a few such utilities for Windows, so I'd appreciate it if you could recommend one for this task. Thank you.

  • Text Terminal Hardware (for Linux)

    Is there any way to obtain a hardware text terminal (preferably small in size) with a screen and a keypad to connect to a Linux machine (preferably via usb)? I'd like to be able to log into a command line and do some work there while simultaneously running a graphical environment on the main display. It seems like there should be some kind of lcd screen and qwerty keypad device designed for this purpose. Does this exist, and how do I get one? Edit: I'd be happy with a small networked device as well, as long as I could get a remote terminal into my computer.

  • Sync iPhone Mail with Webmail

    I had an email account [email protected] hosted on Host A. This mailbox had 100 messages. I wanted to migrate to Host B, so I download all the 100 messages from Host A on my iPhone. Now that my site was successfully migrated to Host B and the email account [email protected] was created again (the mailbox is empty), how can I send the messages that I have downloaded on my iPhone to the mailbox on Host B? Note that the migration from Host A to Host B did not change the IMAP and SMTP adressess and parameters. I'm still using the same addresses, parameters and ports as before. The email accounts just switched hosting.

  • Can I make Gimp 2.8.4 in OSx make the file I just opened be the top window automatically?

    When I open an image file in Gimp 2.8.4 in OSx Mountain Lion 10.8.4 via the File Open menu, it does not automatically make that image the top window, requiring that I then find that window via the Window menu. Very jarring UX! Is there a way to modify this behavior so that it behaves like most GUI applications and brings the document just opened to the fore? Is this a bug in Gimp 2.8? Interestingly in my Ubuntu 12.04 with Gimp 2.6.12 this is not a problem. Since I haven't used Gimp much at all until this month, I don't know if this is a new problem or not.

    I'm a new person at Linux and am running Linux mint 15 cinnamon from an 8GB sandisk pendrive. I cannot dualboot it with windows until my friend (who is a genius at computers) backs up my windows (apparently). The thing is, I cannot save what I have done on it. for example, if I install drpython on my Linux and switch off my laptop, the next time I switch it on, it's all gone. can anyone tell me how I can save what I have done?   • TV-out worked, now doesn't. May the problem be the cable, TV, driver, OS, graphic card?

    I have a CRT TV hooked to the PC, which once worked great, now doesn't. I can't consider getting a newer TV, this one is used in an MAME arcade cabinet so it has to be a CRT for best old school look and feel. It's connected through the TV-out connector of my graphic card. When it worked, I had Windows XP, the same PC and the same card. Now I have windows 7, not sure if the OS switch caused the malfunction as I don't use the TV-out all the time. Can it be an upgrade of the Nvidia driver? I thought it may be the S-video to RCA cable, but tried 3 different cables and neither worked. In fact, one of them, that unlike the other two, has a single RCA output connector instead of two, behaves differently, although it doesn't work, but it does the following: When I open the NVidia settings panel, or when I change a setting and click Apply then the TV flashes for a split second and you can see the windows screen, but then it goes back to blank. So any clues what can be failing here, and some advice? Possible failures, please comment on the one you suspect the most: NVidia driver version Windows version Cable Graphic card's TV out other?

    I wish to have my flavors.me use my own domain, yet still wish to retain access to own_domain.com/blog The way flavors.me works now is that I must have the DNS A record point at their IP. Which obviously will prevent me from still having access to own_domain.com/blog Am posting this to gather some ideas. What ought to be the best way of solving this? I am trying to stave off the need for a subdomain for the blog if I can help it. Is there some magic with htaccess and domain masking that can occur without SEO penalties? Thank you.

    I am listing a couple of stuff that I want people to download for my school and remembered that some sites had directory browsing done with cool little icons displaying the file types. I wanted to do this myself and felt that the default directory browsing of apache is just too plain and IndexOptions +FancyIndexing is a bit 'old'. Any nice jQuery based Web 2.0ish stuff out there for this particular purpose. The files are .debs, .exes, .iso, .zip etc. Thanks!

  • Should one have a separate user account for work use? [closed]

    This question examines the practice of using a separate OS-level user account to divide work use from personal use (specifically, in a creative profession and on a personal computer). I recently left my in-the-flesh job to go to school, but I'm carrying on with the work remotely. I do all of my work on my laptop, and I currently have a separate user account called "Work" where I do exactly that. However, I'm now starting to question that practice. Because my hobby is the same as my job, I want to save notes of the things I learn while working. Because ideas come at any moment, I often want to throw something into my personal task manager's inbox and look at it again later. That task manager is well-suited to handle both the work and personal aspects of my life. Only my personal account has admin rights, but work sometimes requires me to install programs. My employer has no preference regarding my choice, so that is a non-issue. My work is essentially freelance web development, so advice given with that in mind will be much appreciated. Back up all opinion with some personal experience, please. Ideally, give a list of pros and cons and then name reasons for your position.

  • Computer has video artifacts after been exposed to rain

    My desktop now displays video artifacts after been exposed to rain. Only a very small amount of moisture went inside the case. The only place I noticed any water was on the CPU socket. I used a hair dryer and paper towels to wick any remaining moisture. When I boot the PC it loads it the OS, but there are large numbers of video artifacts. The artifacts appear symmetric if that helps. I am wondering what components I need to replace. I'd like to salvage what I can. My setup: AMD Athlon x3, Asus main board (AM2 socket), nVidia GT 430 PCIe, 8gb (4gb x2) DDR3

    I have a macbook pro but my Built-in stereo speakers don't work and it comes a red light from Headphone out/optical digital audio out port. my Built-in stereo speakers aren't dead because at first that OS runs it comes a sound from them but as soon as the macbook pro is ready when i play music they don't work and In the SOUND in system preferences the name of device for sound output is Digital Out. Is the problem from hardware or software. Is there any solution?

    Hi, I use ubuntu lucid server and have a sysvinit start up script thats been working for me for years. I only started using lucid recently, and found out about upstart when my script stopped working. The script depends on mysql server, which unlike in older versions, now uses upstart. Migrating my script to upstart isn't an alternative for now. I would like to continue using my sysvinit, but how do I make sure it starts after mysql? Rgds, Eli

  • Proffesional video editor that can handle FLV?

    I tried Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and was not able to open my file (unsupported format). Media player can open it thanks to ffdshow (tryouts IIRC). Premiere doesnt seem to want to use ffdshow. I tried renaming it to AVI and hoped Premiere would open it via ffdshow but it didnt and i checked and disabled the dont use ffdshow option in ffdshow video decoder option. What is a good proffesional video editor that can handle FLV? All ffmpeg based editors died on it and virtualdub got close but had a bad framerate. Probably bc it didnt know it was a streaming vid and the start is 26mins of 31min video.   • iPod Nano 5th gen Album Artwork

    I am an album artwork fan. I just got all of these brand new alternate artwork covers for my albums and singles. Eventually, i got bored of them, and i wanted the original ones back. So i got on iTunes, and changed the original album covers to the primary covers. I synced my ipod, but it still showed the new covers on it, not the originals. I figured a temporary way to fix it, by deleting the new covers i got, making the originals the default. There has to be an easier way, though. p.s. this also works in vice-versa. I will add the new covers, but before i exit, i change the primary cover to the original. When i change it back to the new one, my iPod will still only show the original Thanks for helping!

  • Resolving a BSOD/CPU/GPU issue...

    Hello all, I'm getting a BSOD / system crash (sometimes the PC just quits without a BSOD). Hardware Specifications cpu: i7 920 2666MHz / 8 cores (not OCed afaik) mobo: Asus P6T SE ram: 2x Corsair CM3X2G1333C9 (64bit DDR3 667MHz) gfx: ATI Radeon HD 5970 1GB (XFX HD5970 BE) os: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (legit) All bios, firmware and drivers are all up to date (as of today). Symptoms Sometimes the PC runs smoothly, sometimes I get this BSOD. The BSOD always happens when I'm doing something related to graphics, such as viewing a video or playing a game. I get to know about the imminent BSOD ~10 seconds earlier; the PC starts freezing occasionally but increasing in frequency and length of lag (I noticed processor usage in creased from Process Monitor). I've tweaked BIOS settings occasionally but afaik, it was in vain. A day or so ago, I reset it to factory settings. BSOD contents The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000101 (0x0000000000000019, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff88001f35180, 0x0000000000000004). 15-12-2010 A fatal hardware error has occurred. Reported by component: Processor Core Error Source: Machine Check Exception Error Type: Internal Timer Error Processor ID: 4 23-12-2010 A fatal hardware error has occurred.   • Top/left edges of screen, in Virtualbox, act like bottom/right edges

    I have Virtualbox running on Windows Vista, and Debian running inside Virtualbox. Everything's running great, for the most part. Everything looks correct. But when I'm in full-screen mode, the top edge seems to act (to the mouse) like it's the bottom edge, and the left edge seems to act like the right edge. For example, if I click in the middle of the desktop and drag left, as if to select some icons, when I hit the very leftmost pixel of the screen, the selection (but not the mouse pointer) jumps to the far right edge of the screen). For the left edge, it's not such a big deal, but not having the top edge is kind of annoying: it means I can't select things from the menu in my top panel by slamming the mouse against the top of the screen. Anyone seen this before? Is there some way to make this work? Thanks!
