  • Performance triage

    Folks often ask me how to approach a suspected performance issue. My personal strategy is informed by the fact that I work on concurrency issues. (When you have a hammer everything looks like a nail, but I'll try to keep this general). A good starting point is to ask yourself if the observed performance matches your expectations. Expectations might be derived from known system performance limits, prototypes, and other software or environments that are comparable to your particular system-under-test. Some simple comparisons and microbenchmarks can be useful at this stage. It's also useful to write some very simple programs to validate some of the reported or expected system limits. Can that disk controller really tolerate and sustain 500 reads per second? To reduce the number of confounding factors it's better to try to answer that question with a very simple targeted program. And finally, nothing beats having familiarity with the technologies that underlying your particular layer. On the topic of confounding factors, as our technology stacks become deeper and less transparent, we often find our own technology working against us in some unexpected way to choke performance rather than simply running into some fundamental system limit. A good example is the warm-up time needed by just-in-time compilers in Java Virtual Machines. I won't delve too far into that particular hole except to say that it's rare to find good benchmarks and methodology for java code. Another example is power management on x86. Power management is great, but it can take a while for the CPUs to throttle up from low(er) frequencies to full throttle. And while I love "turbo" mode, it makes benchmarking applications with multiple threads a chore as you have to remember to turn it off and then back on otherwise short single-threaded runs may look abnormally fast compared to runs with higher thread counts. In general for performance characterization I disable turbo mode and fix the power governor at "performance" state. Another source of complexity is the scheduler, which I've discussed in prior blog entries. Lets say I have a running application and I want to better understand its behavior and performance. We'll presume it's warmed up, is under load, and is an execution mode representative of what we think the norm would be. It should be in steady-state, if a steady-state mode even exists. On Solaris the very first thing I'll do is take a set of "pstack" samples. Pstack briefly stops the process and walks each of the stacks, reporting symbolic information (if available) for each frame. For Java, pstack has been augmented to understand java frames, and even report inlining. A few pstack samples can provide powerful insight into what's actually going on inside the program. You'll be able to see calling patterns, which threads are blocked on what system calls or synchronization constructs, memory allocation, etc. If your code is CPU-bound then you'll get a good sense where the cycles are being spent. (I should caution that normal C/C++ inlining can diffuse an otherwise "hot" method into other methods. This is a rare instance where pstack sampling might not immediately point to the key problem). At this point you'll need to reconcile what you're seeing with pstack and your mental model of what you think the program should be doing. They're often rather different. And generally if there's a key performance issue, you'll spot it with a moderate number of samples. I'll also use OS-level observability tools to lock for the existence of bottlenecks where threads contend for locks; other situations where threads are blocked; and the distribution of threads over the system. On Solaris some good tools are mpstat and too a lesser degree, vmstat. Try running "mpstat -a 5" in one window while the application program runs concurrently. One key measure is the voluntary context switch rate "vctx" or "csw" which reflects threads descheduling themselves. It's also good to look at the user; system; and idle CPU percentages. This can give a broad but useful understanding if your threads are mostly parked or mostly running. For instance if your program makes heavy use of malloc/free, then it might be the case you're contending on the central malloc lock in the default allocator. In that case you'd see malloc calling lock in the stack traces, observe a high csw/vctx rate as threads block for the malloc lock, and your "usr" time would be less than expected. Solaris dtrace is a wonderful and invaluable performance tool as well, but in a sense you have to frame and articulate a meaningful and specific question to get a useful answer, so I tend not to use it for first-order screening of problems. It's also most effective for OS and software-level performance issues as opposed to HW-level issues. For that reason I recommend mpstat & pstack as my the 1st step in performance triage. If some other OS-level issue is evident then it's good to switch to dtrace to drill more deeply into the problem. Only after I've ruled out OS-level issues do I switch to using hardware performance counters to look for architectural impediments.

  • Dojo and Separate JavaScript File

    For a project I needed to use the ArcGIS API for some mapping. To use this you need to use Dojo but in this case all it really comes down to is adding some require lines and a addOnLoad on your web page. At first everything was working great, the maps rendered and the various layers would populate as needed. Once it was working I started moving the various javascript functions into their own files to keep everything nice and neat. Then the problems started, mainly the map would not show up any more. So that was a pretty big problem. Luckily the fix was pretty simple, just move the dojo.addOnLoad line into it’s own script tag. If I had the dojo.addOnLoad in the same script block as the various require lines it would not work as expected.   • Very long (>300s) request processing time on Apache Server serving static content from particular IP

    We are running an Apache 2.2 server for a very large web site. Over the past few months we have been having some users reporting slow response times, while others (including our resources, both on the internal network and our home networks) do not see any degradation in performance. After a ton of investigation, we finally found a "Deny from none" statement in our configuration that was causing reverse DNS lookups (which were timing out) that solved the bulk of our issues, but we still have some customers that we are seeing in the Apache logs (using %D in the log format) with request processing times of 300s for images, css, javascript and other static content. We've checked all Deny / Allow statements for reoccurrence of "none", as well as all other things we know of that would cause reverse DNS lookups (such as using "REMOTE_HOST" in rewrite rules, using %a instead of %h in our log format configuration) as well as verified that HostnameLookups is set to "Off". As an aside, we've also validated that reverse DNS lookups for folks having this problem do not time out - so I'm fairly certain DNS is not an issue in this case. I've run out of ideas. Are there any Apache configuration scenarios that someone can point me to that I might be missing that would cause request times for static content to take so long only for certain users?   • Understanding RedHats recommended tuned profiles

    We are going to roll out tuned (and numad) on ~1000 servers, the majority of them being VMware servers either on NetApp or 3Par storage. According to RedHats documentation we should choose the virtual-guestprofile. What it is doing can be seen here: tuned.conf We are changing the IO scheduler to NOOP as both VMware and the NetApp/3Par should do sufficient scheduling for us. However, after investigating a bit I am not sure why they are increasing vm.dirty_ratio and kernel.sched_min_granularity_ns. As far as I have understood increasing increasing vm.dirty_ratio to 40% will mean that for a server with 20GB ram, 8GB can be dirty at any given time unless vm.dirty_writeback_centisecsis hit first. And while flushing these 8GB all IO for the application will be blocked until the dirty pages are freed. Increasing the dirty_ratio would probably mean higher write performance at peaks as we now have a larger cache, but then again when the cache fills IO will be blocked for a considerably longer time (Several seconds). The other is why they are increasing the sched_min_granularity_ns. If I understand it correctly increasing this value will decrease the number of time slices per epoch(sched_latency_ns) meaning that running tasks will get more time to finish their work. I can understand this being a very good thing for applications with very few threads, but for eg. apache or other processes with a lot of threads would this not be counter-productive?

For example I got this from the firebug addon: < a href="javascript:" text of the link < /a But there is no link to the actual javascript or anything that I can use to directly go to the said link. How do I accomplish this? I need this as part of a personal data mining project that I am doing.

  • HTMLUNIT Facebook javascript warning

    Hi I am trying to create simple application that would be able to search people on facebook using given e-mail. I am already able to log into an account using the HTMLunit tool and even create a page, which should throw result of my search. But when I try to print the result as XML the file is missing some blocks of javascript results (I can tell that they are missing by comparing file created by my application and source code, that can be viewed by using IE) Is there any way around this? I just need to get the same result IE's showsource function does. Thanks a lot. I have my template working properly now but it has my JS and CSS includes in my master page and I would rather only include these things if I actually need them: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../../Content/JSCal2-1.7/jscal2.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../../Content/JSCal2-1.7/border-radius.css" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="../../Scripts/JSCal2-1.7/jscal2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="../../Scripts/JSCal2-1.7/lang/en.js"></script> So obviously I could just put these lines into my template, but then if I have a screen that has 5 DateTimePickers, then this content would be duplicated 5 times which wouldn't be ideal. Anyways, I still want my View's Template to trigger this code being put into the <head> of my page.   • Asyncronus javascript rendering widgets

    Hey all, I'm creating a javascript widget so third partys (web designers) can post a link on their website and it will render the widget on their site. Currently, I'm doing this with just a script link tag: <div class="some_random_div_in_html_body"> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://remotehost.com/link/to/widget.js'></script> </div> However, this has the side-effect of slowing down a thrid party's website render times of the page if my site is under a load. Therefore, I'd like the third party website to request the widget link from my site asyncronously and then render it on their site when the widget link loads completely. The Google Analytics javascript snippet seems to have a nice bit of asyncronous code that does a nice async request to model off of, but I'm wondering if I can modify it so that it will render content on the third party's site.   • Notifying iFrame page from Firefox extension?

    I'm writing a Firefox extension and need to notify an iFrame page of certain events. The iFrame page is contained within a sidebar created by the extension, and this iFrame page is controlled by me. When I load the iFrame page, the extension code needs to send a notification and trigger something to happen within the iFrame page. To accomplish this, I'm creating an event from the extension Javascript and firing the event, which the iFrame page is listening to. Unfortunately, when invoking document.createEvent(), this error pops up (copied, with the quotes, straight out of Firebug): Operation is not supported" code: "9 Any clues on the error, or suggestions on how to trigger something in an iFrame page from the extension Javascript? Last time I submitted a HTML FORM from objective-c, and now I wan't to call a javascript method. What do you think, is there any way to call it and get the response?   • 48-bit bitwise operations in Javascript?

    I've been given the task of porting Java's Java.util.Random() to JavaScript, and I've run across a huge performance hit/inaccuracy using bitwise operators in Javascript on sufficiently large numbers. Some cursory research states that "bitwise operators in JavaScript are inherently slow," because internally it appears that JavaScript will cast all of its double values into signed 32-bit integers to do the bitwise operations (see https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Core_JavaScript_1.5_Reference/Operators/Bitwise_Operators for more on this.) Because of this, I can't do a direct port of the Java random number generator, and I need to get the same numeric results as Java.util.Random(). Writing something like this.next = function(bits) { if (!bits) { bits = 48; } this.seed = (this.seed * 25214903917 + 11) & ((1 << 48) - 1); return this.seed >>> (48 - bits); }; (which is an almost-direct port of the Java.util.Random()) code won't work properly, since Javascript can't do bitwise operations on an integer that size.) I've figured out that I can just make a seedable random number generator in 32-bit space using the Lehmer algorithm, but the trick is that I need to get the same values as I would with Java.util.Random(). What should I do to make a faster, functional port?

  • ASP .NET MVC; return HTML along with JavaScript

    I have a partial view which renders a table. On page load, I am using JQuery to perform Zebra Stripping on it. Whenever ajax refreshes the table, DOM elements are updated, but since JQuery code to do the Zebra Stripping is not executed; table looks ugly. I have tried adding Javascript in my partial view if( Request.IsAjaxRequest() ) return PartialView( "AdministrationGrid", Users ); but javascript is not executed. I guess the only way to execute the Javascript as reply is to do: return JavaScript( "alert( '' )" ); Anyone with an idea how can I achieve this? I thought about JQuery Live, but it is used to bind itself to events.

    Hello, I have been using ANTLR to generate a parser + tree grammar for a mark up language with Java target which works fine. Now I am trying to get the target in JavaScript to use it in my web browser. However, I have not been able to locate any good documentation on how to go about doing this. I am using eclipse with ANTLR IDE, and when i specify the language as JavaScript, I get the following errors. Multiple markers at this line (10): internal error: group JavaScript does not satisfy interface ANTLRCore: mismatched arguments on these templates [treeParser(grammar, name, scopes, tokens, tokenNames, globalAction, rules, numRules, bitsets, labelType, ASTLabelType, superClass, members, filterMode)] (10): internal error: java.util.NoSuchElementException: no such attribute: filterMode in template context [treeParser] If anyone could help me out with this or point me to some material which I could read about the JavaScript target with ANTLR, it would be great.   • Javascript incapable of getting element's max-height via element.style.maxHeight

    I am making a simple accordion menu in javascript. I'd like to be able to set the compact and expanded heights for the elements via the css max-height and min-height values. For some reason, when I try to retrieve the min-height and max-height of the elements in javascript for animation purposes, I get an empty string rather than, for instance, "500px" like it should. The max-height value is set in css, e.g. #id { min-height: 40px; max-height: 500px; } is all set up, but when I put a debugging mechanism in my javascript such as alert( item.style.minHeight ); it pops up an empty alert box. This happens in Firefox 3.6.2 and IE 8. Does anybody know why javascript refuses to be able to get an element's minHeight and maxHeight?

Just not having any luck keeping IE 7 from using accordian.js as opposed to the one created especially for it. Any thoughts?
