  • Etiquette for refactoring other people's sourcecode?

    - by Prutswonder
Our team of software developers consists of a bunch of experienced programmers with a variety of programming styles and preferences. We do not have standards for everything, just the bare necessities to prevent total chaos. Recently, I bumped into some refactoring done by a colleague. My code looked somewhat like this: public Person CreateNewPerson(string firstName, string lastName) { var person = new Person() { FirstName = firstName, LastName = lastName }; return person; } Which was refactored to this: public Person CreateNewPerson (string firstName, string lastName) { Person person = new Person (); person.FirstName = firstName; person.LastName = lastName; return person; } Just because my colleague needed to update some other method in one of the classes I wrote, he also "refactored" the method above. For the record, he's one of those developers that despises syntactic sugar and uses a different bracket placement/identation scheme than the rest of us. My question is: What is the (C#) programmer's etiquette for refactoring other people's sourcecode (both semantic and syntactic)?

  • Throwing a new exception while throwing an old exception

    - by FredOverflow
If a destructor throws in C++ during stack unwinding caused by an exception, the program terminates. (That's why destructors should never throw in C++.) If a finally block is entered in Java because of an exception in the corresponding try block and that finally block throws another exception, the first exception is silently swallowed. This question crossed my mind: Could a programming language handle multiple exceptions being thrown at the same time? Would that be useful? Have you ever missed that ability? Is there a language that already supports this? Is there any experience with such an approach? Any thoughts?

  • MIPS processors : Are they still in use? Which other architecture should I learn?

    - by claws
I've been programming for x86 & x86-64 in assembly language for few months. Now, I want to move on to some different kind of processors. MIPS, SPARC, PowerPC, Itanium, ARM of these I found ARM is being widely use. But the books I see that tutorials & books teach about MIPS more than all these other architectures. Why is MIPS so popular? Are MIPS processors still in use? Which architecture should I go for?

  • Reordering matrix elements to reflect column and row clustering in naiive python

    - by bgbg
Hello, I'm looking for a way to perform clustering separately on matrix rows and than on its columns, reorder the data in the matrix to reflect the clustering and putting it all together. The clustering problem is easily solvable, so is the dendrogram creation (for example in this blog or in "Programming collective intelligence"). However, how to reorder the data remains unclear for me. Eventually, I'm looking for a way of creating graphs similar to the one below using naive Python (with any "standard" library such as numpy, matplotlib etc, but without using R or other external tools).

  • Cocoa: getting a Table View cell to send action messages

    - by underthetable
I'm really having trouble getting a Cocoa Table View cell to send action messages. At the most basic level, in IB there is an action assigned for the NSTextViewCell object, and after editing and pressing Return nothing happens. So I have an IBOutlet hooked up to the NSTextViewCell, and have been experimenting with NSActionCell messages to it. But the Table View seems to pretty much just ignore them. I've also tried subclassing NSTextViewCell, but the methods I'm seeing all look like they want to pass values to the object from somewhere, not return a value from inside the object to configure its behavior. I'm pretty new to programming and Cocoa -- can someone explain each thing that needs to be overridden and how and where to do it?

  • Cassandra and asp.net (C#)

    - by Sergey Osypchuk
I am interested to create portal on cassandra services, since I faced some performance and scale issues starting from 1 million of records. Definitely, it could be solved, but I am interested on other options. My main issues is cost of updating all necessary indexes, to make reading fast. First, is cassandra is good way for asp.net programmers? I mean, maybe there is some other projects, which worth to take a look And second, can you provide any documentation samples on how to start with cassandra programming from C#?

  • Tracking Google Analytics events with server side request automation

    - by Esko
I'm currently in the process of programming an utility which generates GA tracking pixel (utm.gif) URL:s based on given parameters. For those of you who are wondering why I'm doing this on the server side, I need to do this server side since the context which I'm going to start tracking simply doesn't support JavaScript and as such ga.js is completely useless to me. I have managed to get it working otherwise quite nicely but I've hit a snag: I can't track events or custom variables because I have no idea how exactly the utme parameter's value should be structured to form a valid event or var type hit. GA's own documentation on this parameter isn't exactly that great, either. I've tried everything from Googling without finding anything (which I find ironic) to reverse engineering ga.js, unfortunately it's minified and quite unreadable because of that. The "mobile" version of GA didn't help either since officially GA mobile doesn't support events nor vars. To summarize, what is the format of the utme parameter for page hit types event and custom variable?

  • Web Page Rendering Capture

    - by Chaitanya
I start with describing the problem itself. Rather than a problem I'm looking for a better solution. I have a asp.net page which has a bunch of images and a link underneath it, Each image is infact the latest rendering of the link underneath it. I scheduled a bat script which runs every hour to fetch the images through IECapt a web page rendering capture utility. One thing am annoyed about this utility is it takes a lot of time for the 20 images I have and for few because of the flash content it misses to take the actual screenshot of the website. Now I like to know can this rendering be done by traditional programming am not interested in using any utilities. I'm interested in trying this. The solution need not be necessarily a C# based am ready to try in any other language. Because it gives me a chance to learn. Thank you.

  • Determining default character set of platform in Java

    - by Anand
I am programming in Java I have the code as: byte[] b = test.getBytes(); In the api it is specified that if we do not specify character encoding it takes the default platform character encoding. What is meant by "default platform character encoding" ? Does it mean the Java encoding or the OS encoding ? If it means OS encoding the how can i check the default character encoding of Windows and Linux ? Is there anyway we can get the default character encoding using command line ?

  • .NET or Windows Synchronization Primitives Performance Specifications

    - by ovanes
Hello *, I am currently writing a scientific article, where I need to be very exact with citation. Can someone point me to either MSDN, MSDN article, some published article source or a book, where I can find performance comparison of Windows or .NET Synchronization primitives. I know that these are in the descending performance order: Interlocked API, Critical Section, .NET lock-statement, Monitor, Mutex, EventWaitHandle, Semaphore. Many Thanks, Ovanes P.S. I found a great book: Concurrent Programming on Windows by Joe Duffy. This book is written by one of the head concurrency developers for .NET Framework and is simply brilliant with lots of explanations, how things work or were implemented.

  • cannot find vcvarsall.bat when runnning a pyhton script

    - by Ariel
hello all, i am working on vista, and using python 2.6.4. i am using a software which uses a python script. but then i bumped into the message "cannot find vcvarsall.bat". so i installed visual c++ 2010. still the file is not found though it is there. my guess (a very uneducated one...) is that somewhere the path is wrong, because i also have an old visual 2008 (pretty empty) folder. since i have little idea in programming i have no idea where to make the changes for the new path. do i change something in the registery or in the script. i would be happy if somebody could help (preferably in lamen terms). thanx. • Language Design: Combining Gotos and Functions

    - by sub
I'm designing and currently rethinking a low-level interpreted programming language with similarities to assembler. I very soon came across the functions/loops/gotos decision problem and thought that while loops like while and for would be too high-level and unfitting, gotos would be too low level, unmaintainable and generally evil again. Functions like you know them from most languages that have return values and arguments aren't fitting in the language's concept either. So I tried to figure out something between a function and a goto which is capable of Recursion Efficient loops After some thinking I came up with the idea of subroutines: They have a beginning and an end like a function They have a name but no arguments like a goto You can go into one with jump and go out of it again before its end with return (doesn't give back any result, only stops the subroutine) Handled just like normal code - Global scope like goto So I wanted to know: Is the idea above good? What are the (dis)advantages? Would there be a better combination of function and goto or even a completely new idea?

  • MVC with cocoa/objective-c

    - by Leonardo
Hi all, I have a strong j2ee background, and I am trying to move to objective-c for some desktop/iphone programming. I used many java web frameworks with mvc in mind, spring and struts ecc... so I am used to have servlet or controller which pass attributes to jsp pages, which is the view. In jsp pages with jstl you can call this attribute and render to video. In this way controller and view are (in theory) clearly separated. With xcode, I can easily recognize the controller and the view built with IBuilder. All the tutorial I found, shown the controller which go and change directly labels or text fields. So my two questions: seems to me that there's no separation between the two (controller and view), where I am wrong in that ? is there a way for a controller to pack all objects in a kind of context in a j2ee way and have the view read that context ? thanks Leonardo

  • What web-development platform should I use considering Time-To-Market?

    - by Jonas
I have been looking at a few differend platforms for my coming web-development project. I would like to hear what web-development platform is recommended when considering Time-To-Maket. Suppose that I already know the programming language well, but not the web-framework. The OS will be Linux. My requirements and priorities: Time-To-Market RESTful Maintainable code Scales-up (not dog-slow) The one I have looked at but never used are: Java and Play! Framework or GWT Python and Django PHP and Zend Framework Ruby and Ruby on Rails Erlang and Nitrogen and Webmachine Scala and Lift C++ and Wt C# and ASP.NET Mono It's a bonus if the framework has support for making sites for mobile phones.

  • Rx framework: How to wait for an event to be triggered in silverlight test

    - by user324255
Hi, I have a ViewModel that starts loading the Model async in the constructor, and triggers an event when the Model is loaded. I got a test working with the silverlight unit test framework, like this : bool done = false; [TestMethod] [Asynchronous] public void Test_NoCustomerSelected() { ProjectListViewModel viewModel = null; EnqueueCallback(() => viewModel = new ProjectListViewModel()); EnqueueCallback(() => viewModel.ModelLoaded += new EventHandler<EventArgs>(viewModel_ModelLoaded)); EnqueueConditional(() => done); EnqueueCallback(() => Assert.IsNotNull(viewModel.FilteredProjectList)); EnqueueCallback(() => Assert.AreEqual(4, viewModel.FilteredProjectList.Count)); EnqueueTestComplete(); } void viewModel_ModelLoaded(object sender, EventArgs e) { done = true; } But I'm beginning playing with Rx Framework, and trying to get my test to work, but so far I have no luck. Here's 2 attempts : public void Test_NoCustomerSelected2() { ProjectListViewModel viewModel = null; viewModel = new ProjectListViewModel(eventAggregatorMock.Object, moduleManagerMock.Object); IObservable<IEvent<EventArgs>> eventAsObservable = Observable.FromEvent<EventArgs>( ev => viewModel.ModelLoaded += ev, ev => viewModel.ModelLoaded -= ev); eventAsObservable.Subscribe(args => viewModel_ModelLoaded(args.Sender, args.EventArgs)); eventAsObservable.First(); Assert.IsNotNull(viewModel.Model); Assert.AreEqual(4, viewModel.Model.Count); } [TestMethod] public void Test_NoCustomerSelected3() { ProjectListViewModel viewModel = null; var o = Observable.Start(() => viewModel = new ProjectListViewModel(eventAggregatorMock.Object, moduleManagerMock.Object)); IObservable<IEvent<EventArgs>> eventAsObservable = Observable.FromEvent<EventArgs>( ev => viewModel.ModelLoaded += ev, ev => viewModel.ModelLoaded -= ev); o.TakeUntil(eventAsObservable) .First(); Assert.IsNotNull(viewModel.Model); Assert.AreEqual(4, viewModel.Model.Count); } The first test goes in waiting forever, the second doesn't work because the viewModel is null when it does the FromEvent. Anyone has a clue on how to do this properly?

  • Best non-development book for software developers

    - by Dima Malenko
What is the best non software development related book that you think each software developer should read? Note, there is a similar, poll-style question here: What non-programming books should programmers read? Update: Peopleware is a great book, must read, no doubt. But it is about software development so does not count. Update: We ended up suggesting more than one book and that's great! Below is summary (with links to Amazon) of the books you should consider for your reading list. The Design of Everyday Things by Donald Norman Getting Things Done by David Allen Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas R. Hofstadter The Goal and It's Not Luck by Eliyahu M. Goldratt Here Comes Everybody by Clay Shirky ...to be continued.

  • Synchronization requirements for FileStream.(Begin/End)(Read/Write)

    - by Doug McClean
Is the following pattern of multi-threaded calls acceptable to a .Net FileStream? Several threads calling a method like this: ulong offset = whatever; // different for each thread byte[] buffer = new byte[8192]; object state = someState; // unique for each call, hence also for each thread lock(theFile) { theFile.Seek(whatever, SeekOrigin.Begin); IAsyncResult result = theFile.BeginRead(buffer, 0, 8192, AcceptResults, state); } if(result.CompletedSynchronously) { // is it required for us to call AcceptResults ourselves in this case? // or did BeginRead already call it for us, on this thread or another? } Where AcceptResults is: void AcceptResults(IAsyncResult result) { lock(theFile) { int bytesRead = theFile.EndRead(result); // if we guarantee that the offset of the original call was at least 8192 bytes from // the end of the file, and thus all 8192 bytes exist, can the FileStream read still // actually read fewer bytes than that? // either: if(bytesRead != 8192) { Panic("Page read borked"); } // or: // issue a new call to begin read, moving the offsets into the FileStream and // the buffer, and decreasing the requested size of the read to whatever remains of the buffer } } I'm confused because the documentation seems unclear to me. For example, the FileStream class says: Any public static members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe. But the documentation for BeginRead seems to contemplate having multiple read requests in flight: Multiple simultaneous asynchronous requests render the request completion order uncertain. Are multiple reads permitted to be in flight or not? Writes? Is this the appropriate way to secure the location of the Position of the stream between the call to Seek and the call to BeginRead? Or does that lock need to be held all the way to EndRead, hence only one read or write in flight at a time? I understand that the callback will occur on a different thread, and my handling of state, buffer handle that in a way that would permit multiple in flight reads. Further, does anyone know where in the documentation to find the answers to these questions? Or an article written by someone in the know? I've been searching and can't find anything. Relevant documentation: FileStream class Seek method BeginRead method EndRead IAsyncResult interface

  • Seeking enlightenment - global variables in AppEngine (aeoid.get_current_user())

    - by jerd
Hello This may be a 'Python Web Programming 101' question, but I'm confused about some code in the aeoid project (http://github.com/Arachnid/aeoid). here's the code: _current_user = None def get_current_user(): """Returns the currently logged in user, or None if no user is logged in.""" global _current_user if not _current_user and 'aeoid.user' in os.environ: _current_user = User(None, _from_model_key=os.environ['aeoid.user']) return _current_user But my understanding was that global variables were, ehm, global! And so different requests from different users could (potentially) access and update the same value, hence the need for sessions, in order to store per-user, non-global variables. So, in the code above, what prevents one request from believing the current user is the user set by another request? Sorry if this is basic, it's just not how i thought things worked. Thanks

  • Create a permalink with Javascript

    - by Jon Romero
I have a textbox where a user puts a string like this: "hello world! I think that __i__ am awesome (yes I am!)" I need to create a correct url like this: hello-world-i-think-that-i-am-awesome-yes-i-am How can be done using reg expressions? Also, is it possible to do it with Greek (for example)? "Ge?a s?? ??sµe" turns to geia-sou-kosme In other programming languages (python/ruby) I am using a translation array. Should I do the same here?

  • Roadblocks in creating a custom operating system

    - by Dinah
It seems to me that the most common overly ambitious project that programmers (esp. Comp. Sci. grads) try to tackle is building your own operating system. (Trying to create your own programming language + compiler is probably even more common but not nearly as ambitious.) For those (like myself) foolish enough to try: aside from the sheer size, what are the biggest *gotcha*s or unexpected roadblocks you've encountered in trying to create your own OS from the ground up? Edit: A great OS question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/43180/how-to-get-started-in-operating-system-development/

  • The Zen of Python distils the guiding principles for Python into 20 aphorisms but lists only 19. What's the twentieth?

    - by Jeff Walden
From PEP 20, The Zen of Python: Long time Pythoneer Tim Peters succinctly channels the BDFL's guiding principles for Python's design into 20 aphorisms, only 19 of which have been written down. What is this twentieth aphorism? Does it exist, or is the reference merely a rhetorical device to make the reader think? (One potential answer that occurs to me is that "You aren't going to need it" is the remaining aphorism. If that were the case, it would both exist and act to make the reader think, and it would be characteristically playful, thus fitting the list all the better. But web searches suggest this to be an extreme programming mantra, not intrinsically Pythonic wisdom, so I'm stumped.)

  • Resizing screenshots/screen captures for inclusion in Beamer

    - by Stephen
Sorry, this may or may not be a programming question directly, but I am trying to resize screenshots with Imagemagick and Gimp to include in a Beamer presentation, but it comes out even blurrier than the resizing done by LaTeX. For instance, in Beamer I might have a command to rescale the image \includegraphics[width=.5\textwidth]{fig.png}. Using something like \begin{frame} \message{width = \the\textwidth} \message{height = \the\textheight} \end{frame} I have gotten the \textwidth and \textheight parameters in points (345.69548, 261.92444). So I have a script (in Python) that sends a system call to Imagemagick: 'convert %s -resize %.6f@ resized_%s' % (f,a,f) where a is calculated as \textwidth*\textheight*0.5**2. When I then go back into my Beamer presentation and include the resized figure, \includegraphics{resized_fig.png}, the size looks approximately correct but it's super-blurry. I also tried resizing in Gimp (using the GUI) but no luck either... help? Thanks...

  • Ruby Summer of Code Project Ideas

    - by blatyo
So, I'm thinking about applying for Ruby Summer of Code. However, I'm not sure what I want to propose. I was wondering if any of my fellow redditors had any good ideas? I've been programming in Ruby for about 3 years. I am primarily a web developer, but I do things related to bit torrent, data mining, and databases as well. I have a bit torrent related gem that I wrote for the hell of it. I've also got some projects on Github (username: blatyo). I am looking for ideas for me, but anything you can think of that would be awesome I would like to hear as well.

  • Perl for a Python programmer

    - by fortran
I know Python (and a bunch of other languages) and I think it might be nice to learn Perl, even if it seems that most of the people is doing it the other way around... My main concern is not about the language itself (I think that part is always easy), but about learning the Perlish (as contrasted with Pythonic) way of doing things; because I don't think it'll be worth the effort if I end up programming Python in Perl. So my questions are basically two: Are there many problems/application areas where it's actually more convenient to solve them in Perl rather than in Python? If the first question is positive, where can I found a good place to get started and learn best practices that is not oriented to beginners?
