• How to make std::vector's operator[] compile doing bounds checking in DEBUG but not in RELEASE

  I'm using Visual Studio 2008. I'm aware that std::vector has bounds checking with the at() function and has undefined behaviour if you try to access something using the operator [] incorrectly (out of range). I'm curious if it's possible to compile my program with the bounds checking. This way the operator[] would use the at() function and throw a std::out_of_range whenever something is out of bounds. The release mode would be compiled without bounds checking for operator[], so the performance doesn't degrade. I came into thinking about this because I'm migrating an app that was written using Borland C++ to Visual Studio and in a small part of the code I have this (with i=0, j=1): v[i][j]; //v is a std::vector<std::vector<int> > The size of the vector 'v' is [0][1] (so element 0 of the vector has only one element). This is undefined behaviour, I know, but Borland is returning 0 here, VS is crashing. I like the crash better than returning 0, so if I can get more 'crashes' by the std::out_of_range exception being thrown, the migration would be completed faster (so it would expose more bugs that Borland was hiding).

• UnauthorizedAccessException in ComRegisterFunction when accessing registry on Win 7 64.

  I have a [ComRegisterFunction] that I am using to register a BHO Internet explorer extension. During registration on 64-bit windows 7 machines, a UnauthorizedAccessException is thrown on the call to subKey.SetValue("NoExplorer", 1). The registry appears to have BHO's located @ \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Browser Helper Objects, however, I get them same exception when trying to register there. Any Help would be appreciated. • Issue calling superclass method in subclass constructor

  I get a NullPointerException calling a Superclass Method in Subclass Inner Class Constructor... What's the Deal? In my application's main class (subclass of Application), I have a public inner class that simply contains 3 public string objects. In the parent class I declare an object of that inner class. public class MainApplication extends Application { public class Data { public String x; public String y; public String z; } private Data data; MainApplication() { data = new Data() data.x = SuperClassMethod(); } } After I instantiate the object in the constructor, I get a runtime error when I try to assign a value in the inner class with a superclass method. Any idea what's up here?? Can you not call superclass methods in the subclass constructor? ** Edit ** Original question was about inner class member assignment in outer class constructor. Turned out the issue was with calling a superclass method in the class's constructor. It was giving me a null pointer exception. Thus, the question has changed.

• Persistant Http client connections in java

  I am trying to write a simple Http client application in Java and am a bit confused by the seemingly different ways to establish Http client connections, and efficiently re-use the objects. Current I am using the following steps (I have left out exception handling for simplicity) Iterator<URI> uriIterator = someURIs(); HttpClient client = new DefaultHttpClient(); while (uriIterator.hasNext()) { URI uri = uriIterator.next(); HttpGet request = new HttpGet(uri); HttpResponse response = client.execute(request); HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity(); InputStream s = entity.getContent(); processStream (); s.close(); } In regard to the code above, my questions is: Assuming all URI's are pointing to the same host (but different resources on that host). What is the recommended way to use a single http connection for all requests? And how do you close the connection after the last request? --edit: Also what is the difference between using uri.openConnection(), versus HttpClient? Which is preferable, and what other methods exist?

• Why is PHP5 SQLite PDO silently failing on DB connection?

  I have no idea why my code is failing silently. PDO and PDO SQLite are confirmed loaded. Errors are turned on and OTHER errors display. The SQLite file exists. Perms are set correctly. If I change the filename, PHP actually DOES create the file but still fails silently. No output or commands are excecuted after the "$dbh = new PDO($db_conn);" command. I'm not sure what else I can possibly do to troubleshoot. What else... this is on Modwest shared hosting. • Cannot implicity convert type void to System.Threading.Tasks.Task<bool>

  I have a WCF Service that contains the following method. Mind you, I know what the error message means, but this is my first time trying to call an asynchronous task in a WCF service from a client. • Check if file is locked or catch error for trying to open

  I'm trying to handle the problem where a user can try to open, with an OpenFileDialog, a file that is open by Excel. Using the simple FileInfo.OpenRead(), it chucks an IOException, "The process cannot access the file 'cakes.xls' because it is being used by another process." This would be fine to display to the user except that the user will actually get "Debugging resource strings are unavailable" nonsense. It seems not possible to open a file that is open by another process, since using FileInfo.Open(FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.ReadWrite) chucks a SecurityException, "File operation not permitted. Access to path 'C:\whatever\cakes.xls' is denied.", for any file. Rather unhelpful. So it's down to either finding some way of checking if the file is locked, or trying to catch the IOException. I don't want to catch all IOExceptions and assume they're all locked file errors, so I need some sort of way of classifying this type of exception as this error... but the "Debugging resource strings" nonsense along with the fact that that message itself is probably localized makes it tricky. I'm partial trust, so I can't use Marshal.GetHRForException. So: Is there any sensible way of either check if a file is locked, or at least determining if this problem occurred without just catching all IOExceptions?

• npgsql Leaking Postgres DB Connections: Way to monitor connections?

  Background: I'm moving my application from npgsql v1 to npgsql v2.0.9. After a few minutes of running my application, I get a System.Exception: Timeout while getting a connection from the pool. The web claims that this is due to leaking connections (opening a db connection, but not properly closing them). So I'm trying to diagnose leaking postgres connections in npgsql. From the various web literature around; one way to diagnose leaking connections is to setup logging on npgsql, and look for the leaking connection warning message in the log. Problem is, I'm not seeing this message in the logs anywhere. I also found utility that monitors npgsql connections, but it's unstable and crashes. So I'm left manually inspecting code. For everyplace that creates an npgsql connection, there is a finally block disposing of it. For everyplace that opens a datareader, CommandBehavior.CloseConnection is used (and the datareader is disposed). Any other places to check or can someone recommend a way to look for leaking pool connections?

• How can this code throw a NullReferenceException?

  I must be going out of my mind, because my unit tests are failing because the following code is throwing a null ref exception: int pid = 0; if (parentCategory != null) { Console.WriteLine(parentCategory.Id); pid = parentCategory.Id; } The line that's throwing it is: pid = parentCategory.Id; The console.writeline is just to debug in the NUnit GUI, but that outputs a valid int. Edit: It's single-threaded so it can't be assigned to null from some other thread, and the fact the the Console.WriteLine successfully prints out the value shows that it shouldn't throw. Copy/pasted test into new console app and ran in VS showed that it was the line after the if statement block (not shown) that contained a null ref. • Django repeating vars/cache issue?

  I'm trying to build a better/more powerful form class for Django. It's working well, except for these sub-forms. Actually, it works perfectly right after I re-start apache, but after I refresh the page a few times, my HTML output starts to look like this: <input class="text" type="text" id="pickup_addr-pickup_addr-pickup_addr-id-pickup_addr-venue" value="" name="pickup_addr-pickup_addr-pickup_addr-pickup_addr-venue" /> The pickup_addr- part starts repeating many times. I was looking for loops around the prefix code that might have cause this to happen, but the output isn't even consistent when I refresh the page, so I think something is getting cached somewhere, but I can't even imagine how that's possible. The prefix car should be reset when the class is initialized, no? The inserted widget has a somewhat complicated layout, so I am trying to define it in HTML. referencePanel.add(...) fails with NoSuchElement exception. reference.getElement().toSource returns "undefined". • What should I do if i have a factory method which requires different parameters for different implem

  I have an interface, IMessage and a class which have several methods for creating different types of message like so: class MessageService { IMessage TypeAMessage(param 1, param 2) IMessage TypeBMessage(param 1, param 2, param 3, param 4) IMessage TypeCMessage(param 1, param 2, param 3) IMessage TypeDMessage(param 1) } I don't want this class to do all the work for creating these messages so it simply delegates to a MessageCreatorFactory which produces an IMessageCreator depending on the type given (an enumeration based on the type of the message TypeA, TypeB, TypeC etc) interface IMessageCreator { IMessage Create(MessageParams params); } So I have 4 implementations of IMessageCreator: TypeAMessageCreator, TypeBMessageCreator, TypeCMessageCreator, TypeDMessageCreator I ok with this except for the fact that because each type requires different parameters I have had to create a MessageParams object which contains 4 properties for the 4 different params, but only some of them are used in each IMessageCreator. Is there an alternative to this? One other thought I had was to have a param array as the parameter in the Create emthod, but this seems even worse as you don't have any idea what the params are. Or to create several overloads of Create in the interface and have some of them throw an exception if they are not suitable for that particular implementation (ie you called a method which needs more params, so you should have called one of the other overloads.) Does this seem ok? Is there a better solution?

• SIGABRT on iPhone when changing xib

  I've just finished off an app for the iPhone which, until today, ran fine on the iPhone simulator and actual devices. I tried changing the xib which is loaded in the applicationDidFinishLaunching method in my application delegate class - all I did was change the string in initWithNibName. When I launch the app on the simulator, the Default.png image is shown, then the app crashes with an uncaught exception. When running on a device, the Default.png image is shown for about 10 seconds, the UI is never loaded and I get 'GDB: Program received signal: "SIGABRT".' on the Xcode status bar. Debugging shows that applicationDidFinishLaunching is never actually reached before the app crashes. Setting the starting xib back to the original solves the issue, but now I've made a change and saved it in the Interface Builder and the app shows the same issues as above - I've made no code changes at all. Is this a memory issue, or a known issue of a common mistake? NOTE: I've made no code changes whatsoever, and the only changes I've made to the xib are cosmetic, the IBOutlets are all intact.

• Membership.Updateuser not really updating the database.

I created some users with the integrated tool, and the login is perfectly working. But now what I want to do is to give administrator the capability to create, modify, delete users. I made the multiple calls to Membership.UpdateUser after reading this blog entry, but it didn't change anything. A strange think I noticed while debugging, is that when I enter the Button1_Click method, Membership.GetUser(userName) returns me values from my precedent attempt ! I don't really understand what I'm missing. Does someone have a clue ? Thanks in advance !

My only solution is using .ToString() and converting before entering the performance critical regions but that is clumsy and i would have to change my code structure just to be able to serialize the data. Does anyone have an idea how i could serialize the dictionary as <Enum, Int32>? I use the System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer for serialization.

• Targetting x86 vs AnyCPU when building for 64 bit window OSes

  I have an existing C# application written for .NET 2.0 and targetting AnyCPU at the moment. It currently references some third party .NET DLLs which I don't have the source for (and I'm not sure if they were built for x86, x64 or AnyCPU). If I want to run my application specifically on a 64 bit Windows OS, which platform should I target in order for my app to run without errors? My understanding at the moment is to target: x86: If at least one third party .NET dll is built for x86 or use p/Invoke to interface with Win32 DLLs. Application will run in 32 bit mode on both 32 bit and 64 bit OSes. x64: If all third party .NET dlls are already built for x64 or AnyCPU. Application will only run in 64 bit OSes. AnyCPU: If all third party .NET dlls are already built for AnyCPU. Application will run in 32 bit mode on 32 bit OSes and 64 bit on 64 bit OSes. Also, am I right to believe that while targetting AnyCPU will generate no errors when building a application referencing third party x86 .NET DLLs, the application will throw a runtime exception when it tries to load these DLLs when it runs on a 64 bit OS. Hence, as long as one of my third party DLLs is doing p/Invoke or are x86, I can only target x86 for this application?

• python can't start a new thread

  I am building a multi threading application. I have setup a threadPool. [ A Queue of size N and N Workers that get data from the queue] When all tasks are done I use tasks.join() where tasks is the queue . The application seems to run smoothly until suddently at some point (after 20 minutes in example) it terminates with the error thread.error: can't start new thread Any ideas? • Is this a hole in dynamic binding in C# 4?

  I've seen a very interesting post on Fabio Maulo's blog. Here's the code and the bug if you don't want to jump to the url. I defined a new generic class like so: public class TableStorageInitializer<TTableEntity> where TTableEntity : class, new() { public void Initialize() { InitializeInstance(new TTableEntity()); } public void InitializeInstance(dynamic entity) { entity.PartitionKey = Guid.NewGuid().ToString(); entity.RowKey = Guid.NewGuid().ToString(); } } Note that InitializeInstance accepts one parameter, which is of type dynamic. Now to test this class, I defined another class that is nested inside my main Program class like so: class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { TableStorageInitializer<MyClass> x = new TableStorageInitializer<MyClass>(); x.Initialize(); } private class MyClass { public string PartitionKey { get; set; } public string RowKey { get; set; } public DateTime Timestamp { get; set; } } } Note: the inner class "MyClass" is declared private. Now if i run this code I get a "Microsoft.CSharp.RuntimeBinder.RuntimeBinderException" on the line "entity.PartitionKey = Guide.NewGuid().ToString()". The interesting part, though is that the message of the exception says "Object doesn't contain a definition for PartitionKey". Also note that if you changed the modifier of the nested class to public, the code will execute with no problems. So what do you guys think is really happening under the hood? Please refer to any documentation -of course if this is documented anywhere- that you may find?
