• Does having a longer string in a SQL Like expression allow hinder or help query executing speed?

  I have a db query that'll cause a full table scan using a like clause and came upon a question I was curious about... Which of the following should run faster in Mysql or would they both run at the same speed? Benchmarking might answer it in my case, but I'd like to know the why of the answer. The column being filtered contains a couple thousand characters if that's important. SELECT * FROM users WHERE data LIKE '%=12345%' or SELECT * FROM users WHERE data LIKE '%proileId=12345%' I can come up for reasons why each of these might out perform the other, but I'm curious to know the logic.

• Build a Sitemap but webpages don't use links

  Folks I am trying to build a sitemap (we need one badly) for a huge multi-page web app. Technically its not much more than a collection of php/MySQL web forms that use javascript instead of traditional linkage to access the many pages. >td width="100" align="center" ONMOUSEOVER="this.className='bgover'" ONMOUSEOUT="this.className='bgout'" onclick="location.href='../main.php'">Main Page</td> Above is code sample of how the links are currently managed. I know I can search through the various pages, nearly a 1000, and find these "location.href" variables and that will help me a sitemap for each section. But maybe there is an easier way? WE use Trac and SVN so perhaps I am going about this the wrong way? Any advice would be appreciated.

  I am looking for examples of code/data/infrastructure design for a dashboard-style webapp. I am designing an interface for staff and faculty at a university to access departmental resources and be alerted of cyclical processes, events, deadlines, etc. Technologies I am working with: apache tomcat 6 and a mySQL database, JSP (including JSTL), bootstrap 3, and javascript/jquery. I have basic experience most of these technologies building smaller web apps but was hoping someone could direct me towards a book or other resource that discusses how to design the db architecture (and maybe how to template) for a dashboard, esp. for something like a notification systems. Any suggestions?

• Scraping html WITHOUT uniquie identifiers using python

  I would like to design an algorithm using python that scrapes thousands of pages like this one and this one, gathers all the data and inserts it into a MySQL database. The script will be run on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to update the database of any new information added to each individual page. Ideally I would like a scraper that is easy to work with for table structured data but also data that does not have unique identifiers (ie. id and classes attributes). Which scraper add-on should I use? BeautifulSoup, Scrapy or Mechanize? Are there any particular tutorials/books I should be looking at for this desired result? In the long-run I will be implementing a mobile app that works with all this data through querying the database.

• PDO Prepare statement not processing parameters

  I've exhausted all efforts at what appears to be a trivial problem, but gotten nowhere. There is a simple Prepare statement: $qry = $core->db->prepare("SELECT * FROM users WHERE email = '?'"); $qry->execute(array('[email protected]')); However, no rows are returned. Running the query with the parameters hardcoded into the query results in a successful selection of one row. I've tryed many different methods of doing the prepare, but even it this most simple form it isn't working. The PDO object is stored in a singleton called Core. PDO is using the mysql driver.

• Is this SQL select code following good practice?

  I am using sqlite and will port to mysql (5) later. I wanted to know if I am doing something I shouldnt be doing. I tried purposely to design so I'll compare to 0 instead of 1 (I changed hasApproved to NotApproved to do this, not a big deal and I haven't written any code). I was told I never need to write a subquery but I do here. My Votes table is just id, ip, postid (I don't think I can write that subquery as a join instead?) and that's pretty much all that is on my mind. Naming conventions I don't really care about since the tables are created via reflection and is all over the place. select id, name, body, upvotes, downvotes, (select 1 from UpVotes where IPAddr=?   Hello All, I read on MySQL Performance Blog that when tables are large, it is better to scan full tables, instead of using indexes. I have a table with tens of millions of rows. When conducting queries, if I use no indexes, then queries are 24 times slower than with indexes. I know lot of things may cause this (e.g., are rows stored sequentially), but can you please give me some hints what might be happening? Or how I should start examining this issue?   I have a site set up using CakePHP and MySQL and I want to work on a test database without disrupting my live site in case something goes wrong. I have another busy site, but my test site runs off the live database which can be occasionally nerve wracking. What do I do if I change a table name in the test db and I want it changed in the live database? Or if I remove a record from the test database. Is there a way to diff the changes? How do I even merge those changes? How does this interfere with live user edits and things of that nature? Hopefully some of you working devs can share some insight!

  I have a table with slanted text in the header row, the only problem is that the text still makes the width of the columns way to large. Is there any way to squish together the table columns so that they are about the width of the select boxes? Or is there a way to place the text there without it in the header and maybe just use a <div> or <p>? Party inherited by Organization and Person Organization inherited by Customer, Vendor Person inherited by Contact In the database I have the following tables Party, Customer, Vendor, Contact. All of them have a corresponding row in Party table. Contact belongs to either Vendor or Customer. I have a field on the Contact table for org_party_id. However, since the organization can be either a Customer or Vendor I need to be able to look at different tables. Is there a way to map this in hibernate? Or, a better way to manage it in DB/ hibernate?

  What I want to realize is the following: In a JSP x I have a 3 dropdownlists and a button called edit when user click this button a table dynamically should be displayed. Now this table is modified correponding the values in those 3 dropdownlists. So it can be 3 cols or 4 cols or even 6 cols, it depends on the selected values. So what I tried is to use the servlet to getParameter doing the if clause construct the html and then forward the response. Have you any the suggestion of the structure that I can use in JSP? • Resizing iframe height using javascript issue

  I have an iframe which content is a php-file, and that php-file displays some mysql records. The more records, the larger the iframe height should get, otherwise it wont show all of the information in the iframe. Here is a code I have for dynamically setting the iframe height, from the iframes content (the php file): var x = document.body.scrollHeight; x = x + 20 + 'px'; window.parent.document.getElementById("iframe001").style.height=x; iframe001 is the iframe I am referring to above. I am adding 20px of height extra because of borders etc... Now, sometimes this resizing works, sometimes it doesn't. Does anybody know why it works sometimes. If I alert the 'x' variable, it shows different values sometimes, but most times it works. Any other ways you know of setting the iframes height from the content of the iframe? Thanks

  I have events flowing into a MySQL database and I need to group and sum the events to transactions and store away into another table. That is determined by the event with the code e (b for the beginning, e for the end and i for varying amount of intermediates). Being a novice in SQL, how could I implement the requirement for the existance of the end code before the summing?

  dear All. I'm using integer PKs in some tables of mysql database. Before input from PHP script, I am doing some sanitizing, which includes intval($id) and $mysqli-real_escape_string(). The queries are quite simple insert into `tblproducts`(`supplier_id`,`description`) values('$supplier_id','$description') In this example, $description goes through real_escape_string(), while $supplier_id only being intval()'ed. I'm just curious, if there're any situations, when I need to apply both intval and real_escape_string to integer I'm inserting into DB? So basically do I really need to use? $supplier_id = intval($mysqli->real_escape_string($supplier_id)); Thank you.

  I'm a little worried about the absence of this variable when I execute the show variables command. This is what I get when I execute show variables like 'char%': character_set_client utf8 character_set_connection utf8 character_set_database utf8 character_set_results utf8 character_set_server utf8 character_set_system utf8 character_sets_dir /usr/share/mysql/charsets/ I wonder why this is happening. What does it mean? can I just add it to the my.cnf file? Thank you... Edit: Sorry, I recently noted that I didn't specify which variable we're talking about (though I said it in the title).
