I've recently started using MVC because it's part of the framework that myself and my work-partner are going to use. We chose it because it looked easy and separated process from display, are there advantages besides this that we don't know about and could be missing out on?   • What are the alternatives for Java authentication?

    Preferably something that integrates well with a Flex front end. Yes the Spring Security guys say this is possible, but all examples seem to use legacy jsp tag libraries making them half useless as examples. I don't want to spend a month setting up and learning how to use a security tool. I would like a tool which supports using annotations (@RolesAllowed etc), MINIMAL XML, and 'remember-me' features (not cookie based). Apache Shiro seems to support Flex/Silverlight/Swing as well but I'd like to know if there are any other alternatives that are NOT container specific.

    I tried hard to build QtDeclarative with Qt 4.6.2 on Mac OS X (Leopard) and did lots of Googling without finding any cure. Could anyone please help to solve this problem? Thanks.   • basic javascript DOJO 1.4 installation not working

    I am trying to give the DOJO framework a test spin but some how the latest release does not work at all ( 1.4.2) I keep getting a "console[_8]" [undefined] is not an object error. this is on the demos as well 1.3.3 works fine it seems ( or at least i dont get that error so far) any ideas? I have been using jquery for a while and love it , just looking for something better i guess. does anyone recommend DOJO? thanks

    I've seen some jobs that require nhibernate knowledge, as well as numerous questions on stack. I found another question that pointed me to Summer Of NHibernate and I am watching the videos now. However it has no introduction explaining why NHibernate was created and what problem is solves. By looking on wikipedia, I can see vaguely what it does, but to me it looks like .NET already has the entity framework which seems to do the same thing. Can anyone clarify why nhibernate exists?

    In most MVC based framework I see a router object. If I look at it splits up the uri and decides what controller should be used, and which action should be fired. Even though this makes a lot of sense, I can not give this a place in the MVC patern. Is splitting up the uri not the job of the controller. And then the controller should just decide which class and function to run.

  • Controling page number shown in printing dialog

    I'm trying to implement printing a range of pages in c# While printing, the .net framework throws up a message box that says "Page # of document". This starts at 1, and counts up to the number of pages printed. If I'm printing pages 10-11, I want that count to start at 10, not 1. Is there a way to set the starting value? The logical thing would be if it started at PrinterSettings.FromPage, but it ignores that value.

    As an ASP.NET developer, I'm used to working with how VS/C# transparently autogens proxy classes for web references (yes, I know, we're spoiled), but now that I'm creating documentation for more than one coding platform I'm trying to discover what the equivelant to that is in any other framework. So is there a similar way to work transparently with web reference proxy classes for say, RoR, PHP, and Python? And if there's nothing integrated, are there tools you recommend to autogen the proxy classes, or do you recommend to roll custom classes?

    Hello. I'm PHP-programmer, but I'm extremely interested in learning Java. So I decided to change speciality from PHP to Java. At the moment I have an opportunity to try to make quite simple web-application (it should contain 2-3 forms, several pages with information from the database and authorization module) and also I have a chance to choose any technology I want. Besides I have about 3 months for this task. I've decided to develop site with Java technologies for the purpose of studying. I've already read a book about Java ("Java2 Complete Reference" by P.Naughton) and currently I'm reading "Thinking in Java" by B.Eckel. I clearly understand it's not enough for efficient development, but I want, at least, to try. I would be very appreciated for the advises, which framework (for example) or technology to choose (Spring, Grails etc.) and what primary aspects and technologies of Java should I pay attention to?     I know that ASP.NET MVC 1.0 is bin-deployable as explained in Phil Haack's article. Is ASP.NET MVC 2.0 also bin-deployable? Has anyone done this already that can point out potential pitfalls specific to version 2.0 if there are any? I would like to deploy a relatively simple ASP.NET MVC 2.0 onto a Windows 2008 Web server that does not have ASP.NET MVC 2.0 installed. It is running .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. Thanks!

But if I: use Spring to supply an application context annotate my entities with JPA annotations (and use Hibernate as a JPA provider) configure C3P0 as a connection pooling data source annotate my service methods with @Transactional (and use Atomikos as JTA provider) Use JAXB for marshalling and unmarshalling and possibly add my own JNDI capability then don't I effectively have a JEE application server? And then aren't my beans EJBs? Or is there some other defining characteristic? What is it that a JEE compliant app server gives you that you can't easily/readily get from Tomcat with some 3rd party subsystems?

    I'm writing a program in C# using the WPF framework. I need to display images, and I'd like to cache them to avoid downloading them constantly. I can code my own cache, however, IE already has a caching system. I can find code to read entries out of the IE cache, however I've found nothing dealing with the issue of adding items to the cache. Is there a good way to do it, or should I just implement a separate cache?

  • How do I create and read non-global variables that aren't destroyed at end of function?

    I am attempting to code some plugins to use with MIDI sequencers but have hit a stumbling block. I can't use global-scope variables to store information because multiple instances of the .dll can exist which share memory. How do I create a class (for re-usability purposes in other plugins) containing 2 dimensional array and other variables the content of which is to be shared between functions? If that is possible, how would I read and write the data from the function in the framework where I do the processing?
