    Given an SCN (system change number), and assuming an SCN for which the data is still in the undo logs, what information about the SCN can I derive? of course, SCN_TO_TIMESTAMP() gives an approximate time the data was committed. Is there any other information I can derive? What transaction, what tables, what data were affected? etc?

  • Oracle SQL: Multiple Subqueries Unioned Without Running Original Query Multiple Times.

    So I've got a very large database, and need to work on a subset ~1% of the data to dump into an excel spreadsheet to make a graph. Ideally, I could select out the subset of data and then run multiple select queries on that, which are then UNION'ed together. Is this even possible? I can't seem to find anyone else trying to do this and would improve the performance of my current query quite a bit. Right now I have something like this: SELECT ( SELECT ( SELECT( long list of requirements ) UNION SELECT( slightly different long list of requirements ) ) ) and it would be nice if i could group the commonalities of the two long requirements and have simple differences between the two select statements being unioned.

    I would like to distinguish date at midnight (i.e. '12/05/2010 00:00:00') from date without time specified (i.e. '12/05/2010'). This value is provided by user, sometimes it is only date which is important, sometimes it is date and time and later the application is expected to show the time only when it was explicitly provided. So for the following inputs I would expect the following outputs: for '12/05/2010' I would expect '12/05/2010' for '12/05/2010 09:23' I would expect '12/05/2010 09:23' for '12/05/2010 00:00' I would expect '12/05/2010 00:00' I know I can model it in two separate columns, date and time, but I was wondering was there any way of handling this in single date column?

    Hi All, I have an comma delimited string which I want to use in an "IN" clause of the statement. eg: 100,101,102 Since In and "IN" clause I have to quote the individial strings, I use a replace function: eg: select ''''||replace('100,101,102',',',''', ''')||'''' from dual; The above query works, however, when I try to use the output of the above as an input to the "IN" clause, it returns no data. I am restricted by only SQL statements, so I cannot use PL/SQL code. Kindly help. eg: select * from employee where employee_number in ( select ''''||replace('100,101,102',',',''', ''')||'''' from dual); The above does not work. Please let me know what I am missing.

  • Waiting for a submitted job to finish in Oracle PL/SQL?

    I'm looking for the equivalent of Java's thread.join() in PL/SQL. I.e. I want to kick off a number of jobs (threads), and then wait for them to finish. How is this possible in PL/SQL? I'm thinking of using dbms_job.submit (I know it's deprecated). dbms_scheduler is also an alternative.   • Can an Oracle user get a list of its own running sessions without access to v$session?

    I have an application that runs a process and I only want one process to run at a time. Some options are: Use an object lock to prevent subsequent processes running. This would be fine, but I want the calling session to return immediately and not wait for the running session to complete. Use a custom Y/N to set whether a process is running or not. I set a "Y" flag at the start of the process and set it to "N" when it finishes or fails. Also fine but feels like I'm re-inventing the wheel and doesn't feel like the way to go. It also falls short if the running session is killed as the flag stays at "Y". Use dbms_application_info.set_module This approach seems the most robust, but if I'm to know there's an existing running process I think I need to be able to query v$session and I don't want this application to have such wide access. Any ideas?

    I have a OpenVZ VPS running CentOS 6.3 64 bit and when I try to install JRE 7 64bit using the command: rpm -Uvh java.rpm It gives me this error: Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:jre ########################################### [100%] Unpacking JAR files... rt.jar... Error: Could not open input file: /usr/java/jre1.7.0_09/lib/rt.pack jsse.jar... Error: Could not open input file: /usr/java/jre1.7.0_09/lib/jsse.pack charsets.jar... Error: Could not open input file: /usr/java/jre1.7.0_09/lib/charsets.pack localedata.jar... Error: Could not open input file: /usr/java/jre1.7.0_09/lib/ext/localedata.pack I then tried the command: java -version And it gives me this error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit. Why does this happen if I have more than enough RAM on the VPS to run this (1GB)? Could it be an issue with the host node of the VPS?   • WebCenter Customer Advisory Board meetings kick off Oracle Open World 2012!

    Welcome to OpenWorld! OpenWorld 2012 got underway today with a series of meetings with the members of the WebCenter Customer Advisory Board. Led by the WebCenter Product Management team, these meetings are a great way for the product team and customers to directly interact and discuss real-life business challenges, product details and to discuss upcoming features and functionality. This year, board members participated in discussions around live demos around product enhancements that will be featured throughout the coming week. Highlights included a variety of new mobile and social solutions, a great new user interface for WebCenter Content plus new Portal and Sites functionality that makes the experience for the everyday user a lot more pleasant. The day kicked off with Roel Stalman, VP of Product Management, giving a detailed overview of what’s new in WebCenter. Given all the improvements to discuss, this session went over 2 hours! Roel showcased the brand new UI for Content, Portal and Sites. He also gave live demos of the new mobile apps for WebCenter Content, Portal and the Oracle Social Network.  The attendees then broke into sub-groups in order to deep-dive with Product Management for the Portal, Sites, and Content product areas on specific functionality and application integrations.   • How to keep the trunk stable when tests take a long time?

    We have three sets of test suites: A "small" suite, taking only a couple of hours to run A "medium" suite that takes multiple hours, usually ran every night (nightly) A "large" suite that takes a week+ to run We also have a bunch of shorter test suites, but I'm not focusing on them here. The current methodology is to run the small suite before each commit to the trunk. Then, the medium suite runs every night, and if in the morning it turned out it failed, we try to isolate which of yesterday's commits was to blame, rollback that commit and retry the tests. A similar process, only at a weekly instead of nightly frequency, is done for the large suite. Unfortunately, the medium suite does fail pretty frequently. That means that the trunk is often unstable, which is extremely annoying when you want to make modifications and test them. It's annoying because when I check out from the trunk, I cannot know for certain it's stable, and if a test fails I cannot know for certain if it's my fault or not. My question is, is there some known methodology for handling these kinds of situations in a way which will leave the trunk always in top shape? e.g. "commit into a special precommit branch which will then periodically update the trunk every time the nightly passes". And does it matter if it's a centralized source control system like SVN or a distributed one like git? By the way I am a junior developer with a limited ability to change things, I'm just trying to understand if there's a way to handle this pain I am experiencing.

  • Best setup/workflow for distributed team to integrated DSVC with fragmented huge .NET site?

    So we have a team with 2 developers one manager. The dev server sits in a home office and the live server sits in a rack somewhere handled by the larger part of my company. We have freedom to do as we please but I want to incorporate Kiln DSVC and FogBugz for us with some standard procedures to make sense of our decisions/designs/goals. Our main product is web-based training through our .NET site with many videos etc, and we also do mobile apps for multiple platforms. Our code-base is a 15 yr old fragmented mess. The approach has been rogue .asp/.aspx pages with some class management implemented in the last 6 years. We still mix our html/vb/js all on the same file when we add a feature/page to our site. We do not separate the business logic from the rest of the code. Wiring anything up in VS for Intelli-sense or testing or any other benefit is more frustrating than it is worth, because of having to manually rejigger everything back to one file. How do other teams approach this? I noticed when I did wire everything up for VS it wants to make a class for all functions. Do people normally compile DLLs for page-specific functions that won't be reusable? What approaches make sense for getting our practices under control while still being able to fix old anti-patterns and outdated code and still moving towards a logical structure for future devs to build on?
