• C# 4.0 Optional/Named Parameters Beginner&rsquo;s Tutorial

  One of the interesting features of C# 4.0 is for both named and optional arguments.  They are often very useful together, but are quite actually two different things.  Optional arguments gives us the ability to omit arguments to method invocations. Named arguments allows us to specify the arguments by name instead of by position.  Code using the named parameters are often more readable than code relying on argument position.  These features were long overdue, especially in regards to COM interop. Below, I have included some examples to help you understand them more in depth. Please remember to target the .NET 4 Framework when trying these samples. • bash-like features in sqlplus, rman and other Oracle command line tools

  As far as I can remember, I have always been complaining about the lack of “recall last command” from within sqlplus. Such a basic thing, available in any bash shell or windows cmd terminal, remains missing with Oracle command lines tools. Thanks to davidw who published a post in the french blog EASYTEAM, it is now possible to use a simple rpm package rlwrap to enhance sqlplus, dgmgrl, rman, … tools and give them bash “recall/completion” capabilities. I installed it in a few minutes and I am already wondering how can people work without it. The steps are here : Get the rpm file from sites like RPM PBone. AS root, install the package rpm -ivh rlwrap-0.37-1.el5.x86_64.rpm As Oracle, create a dictionnary file (for autocompletion) . This file is made of a series of words to be used for autocompletion. Put in it the list of dictionary tables, the list of sql commands, the list of sqlplus commands… whatever your like. And use the <tab> key as you would in a bash shell. $HOME/.oracle_keywords Create an alias for sqlplus alias sqlplus='/usr/bin/rlwrap -if $HOME/.oracle_keywords $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus' And enjoy it !!! • Working with QuickBooks using LINQPad

  The RSSBus ADO.NET Providers can be used from many applications and development environments. In this article, we show how to use LINQPad to connect to QuickBooks using the RSSBus ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks. Although this example uses the QuickBooks Data Provider, the same process applies to any of our ADO.NET Providers. Create the Data Model Step 1: Download and install both the Data Provider from RSSBus and LINQPad (available at www.linqpad.net Step 2: Create a new project in Visual Studio and create a data model for it using the ADO.NET Entity Data Model wizard. Step 3: Create a new connection by clicking "New Connection", specify the connection string options, and click Next. Step 4: Select the desired tables and views and click Finish to create the data model. Step 5: Right click on the entity diagram and select 'Add Code Generation Item'. Choose the 'ADO.NET DbContext Generator'. Step 6: Now build the project. The generated files can be used to create a QuickBooks connection in LINQPad. Create the connection to QuickBooks in LINQPad Step 7:Open LINQPad and click 'Add New Connection'. Step 8: Choose 'Entity Framework DbContext POCO'. Step 9: Choose the data model assembly ('.dll') created by Visual Studio as the 'Path to Custom Assembly'. Choose the name of the custom DbContext, the path to the config file, and assign a name to the connection that will allow you to recognize its purpose. Step 10: Congratulations! Now you have a connection to QuickBooks, and you can query data through LINQPad.

• Improving the performance of JDeveloper11g (part 2) and JVMs in general

  Just received an email from one of our JVM developers who read my blog entry on Performance tuning JDeveloper11g and he's confirmed that all of the above parameters are totally supported :-) He's also provided a description of the parameters so we can learn what magic is actually being applied. - -XX:+AggressiveOpts -- this enables the latest and greatest JVM optimizations. It will likely help most Java applications. It's fully supported. The downside of it is that because it has the latest and greatest optimizations, there is some small probability that it may not offer as good of an experience. As those features enabled with this command line option have "matured", they are made the default in a future JDK release. So, you can think of this command line option as the place where the newest optimizations get introduced. Some time later they are moved out from under AggressiveOpts to become default behavior. -XX:+OptimizeStringConcat -- only works with the -server JVM. It may be enabled by the default in a future JDK 7 update release. This option delays the construction of a StringBuilder/StringBuffer and attempts to avoid re-sizing the underlying char[] by attempting to detect the size of the char[] to allocate based on what's being appended to the StringBuilder/StringBuffer. -XX:+UseStringCache -- I would not suggest using this unless you knew that JDeveloper allocated the same string over and over again. And, the string that's allocated over and over again is one of the first 100,000 allocated strings. In short, I'd recommend against using it. And, in fact, in Java 7 (currently) does not include this feature. -XX:+UseCompressedOops -- applicable to 64-bit JVMs. And, if you're using a 64-bit JVM, I'd suggest you use it. It's auto enabled in JDK 7 64-bit JVMs and later JDK 6 64-bit JVMs enable it by default too. -XX:+UseGCOverheadLimit -- by default this option is already enabled. One other command line option to consider is -XX:+TieredCompilation for a JDK 6 Update 25 or later, or JDK 7. This gives you the startup of a -client JVM and the peak performance of a -server JVM. • Do you know how to move the Team Foundation Server cache

  There are a number of reasons why you may want to change the folder that you store the TFS Cache. It can take up “some” amount of room so moving it to another drive can be beneficial. This is the source control Cache that TFS uses to cache data from the database. Moving the Cache is pretty easy and should allow you to organise your server space a little more efficiently. You may also get a performance improvement (although small) by putting it on another drive.. Create a new directory to store the Cache. e.g. “d:\TfsCache\” Figure: Create a new folder Give the local TFS WPG group full control of the directory   Figure: You need to use the App Tier Service WPG In the application tier web.config (~\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config) add the following setting (to the appSettings section). Figure: The web.config for TFS is stored in the application folder <appsettings> ... <add value="D:\" key="dataDirectory" /> ... </appsettings> Figure: Adding this to the web.config will trigger a restart of the app pool Figure: Your web.config should look something like this The app pool will automatically recycle and Team Web Access will start using the new location.  If you then download a file (not via a proxy) a folder with a GUID should be created immediately in the folder from #1.  If the folder doesn’t appear, then you probably don’t have permissions set up properly.

• FormatDate in Display Item Form Webpart

  I've faced an issue that I wanted to display the date in the format of ('MMMM dd') that is retrieved from a sharepoint list in an arabic site collection. So, after googling this issue, I've found out that a possible solution to my poblem is using the function ddwrt:FormatDateTime that can be used as long as you'll include the following namespace xmlns:ddwrt="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WebParts/v2/DataView/runtime" My purpose was solved by writing this line of code in my xsl code behind for the webpart : ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@StartDate),3073,'MMMM dd') but that worked only if the webpart is inserted into an English site . After trying to search but in vain, I started to use my guesses that ended up doing something like that: ddwrt:FormatDateTime(ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@StartDate),3073,'dd/MM/yyyy'), 3073, 'MMMM dd') And the cause of the problem was that sharepoint parses the date as 'MM/dd/yyyy' which I think could be related to server regional settings, so I had to force it to parse the date in arabic-Egypt format as 'dd/MM/yyyy' in order to get the correct 'Month Day' format as expected.
