• Why does a browser dialog come up when an xmlhttprequest sends the wrong / no auth?

  How come the major browsers all bring up a login dialog when an xmlhttprequest does auth wrong or doesn't send it? I mean isn't this poor UI? Now a days it seems like a lot of people try http auth in jQuery, because theoretically it is quite easy - until the user fails to enter the correct data and is presented with the browsers dialog, which gets in their way, and they might have no idea what to do with it or why it's there? I don't know too much about these low level browser specifications but can someone bring this up with the RFC or webkit/gecko developers? jQuery digest auth could be powerful and user friendly if this was fixed. ** It seems like apache could also fix the problem on their side by not sending the header, but whichever one is the most secure way of doing this would be nice.

  I've used SimpleOCR, which has a nice GUI for correcting errors. Unfortunately it makes a lot of errors! (and suffers other bugs and limitations) Is there a free OCR program for Windows which has such a GUI and a low error rate? I want it to show the original (bitmap) word while I'm editing the OCRed word similar to what SimpleOCR does: Free is good. Open-source is better.

• middle click works only once

  Just recently I'm having problems with middle click. After a reboot, it works the first time I use it, but then it doesn't work after that. As far as I've investigated, that's the same on Linux and Windows. The mouse is Reaper ZMS-1000. To me it sounds like a hardware issue, but it's strange that it works after a reboot every time just for one time. Any suggestions?

• Middle mouse click in VirtualBox (Vista host, Debian guest)

  I'm running Virtualbox on Windows Vista. I have a Microsoft USB mouse (it says "Comfort Optical Mouse 3000") with left and right buttons, and a mousewheel in the middle. If I press down on the wheel, it pretty obviously makes a "click". I'm running Debian inside Virtualbox, and it's working great, but middle-mouse-click does nothing. Left and right click, and scrolling with the wheel, work fine. Is there any way to get middle-mouse-click to work in my virtual machine?

  Hi, the utilities that come with my HP vector mouse are fairly basic. My old logitech G9, the best mouse ever made (except when it gets senile and starts having 'gaps') had a utility to map each of the buttons to a keypress, which I use in games, such as xbutton1 and 2 for run, etc. is there a utility, or a way, that I can map the 2 xbuttons on my new mouse so that they generate/simulate a keypress? I'm wondering if there are built in mappings in Windows that do this already, and its just a case of finding out what the keypresses are? thanks, Will

• Ubuntu 10.04 User Interface errors

  Hi Guys Using Ubuntu 10.04 Beta on a Sony Vaio laptop (slightly old PCG-4n7M). It was working wonderfully until this morning. After updating and upgrading the login screen images gave broken image icons, then on logging in UI was replaced with just the cmd shell. All menus are gone. I have tried to reconfigure xserver-xorg and that doesn't work. Reinstalling doesn't either. I have tried a number of other attempts. What is weird is that I can launch graphical applications from the cmd line. such as firefox or google-chrome. and they work but the UI is simplified or broken (no resizing, closing, minimizing). I am a bit lost on how to fix this error. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know

• Sun Power Button Won't Shut Down System

  Background: We are running NIS and have NFS mounts from a Solaris 10 workstation to a Solaris 8 server. If the workstation loses its network connection for some reason, when I look at the workstation's console I see repeated messages of the form: <date> <time> <hostname> ypbind[<pid>]: NIS server not responding for domain "<domain>"; still trying. If I try to login at the console as a user, it won't work because it can't authenticate my account through NIS. Also, it won't return to a login prompt again, so I can't log in as root. If I press the power button (don't hold it in) on the workstation, I see: <date> <time> <hostname> power: WARNING: Power off requested from power button or SC, powering down the system! Shutdown started. <date> <time> Changing to init state 5 - please wait. <date> <time+2 minutes> <hostname> power: WARNING: Failed to shut down the system! And continue to see messages of the form: <date> <time> <hostname> ypbind[<pid>]: NIS server not responding for domain "<domain>"; still trying. So, the questions are How do I make NIS stop trying (because I know it will fail)? Why won't it shut down?

• VIM UI language issue

  I am using VIM for a while, but never faces such a problem. When i connect to my desktop Ubuntu PC via ssh from a tablet (Asus tf Prime) using terminal emulator (screen-256-colors) I got my vim in Chinese... On desktop it is correctly working in English. I've tried to set set langmenu=en_US.UTF-8 language en_US.UTF-8 but it do not help... See screenshot You may find my configuration on github

• Firefox v15.0 about:newtab inaccessible via the back button

  As of this morning I upgraded my Firefox to version 15.0. Or well, it did it for me. That's when my issue began. I've configured Firefox so that when I open up a new tab via Ctrl-T that it loads the about:newtab page which was released in version 14.x(?). I use this functionality extensively. I visit a page from the about:newtab page, read it, press the back button and pick another frequent website from the display I want to visit. However as of v15.0 the latter part is no longer functioning, after visiting a website from the about:newtab page the back button will not let me go back to the about:newtab page. Firefox acts as if that history entry was never there. I've tried searching the release notes to see if this change was intentional or a reported bug, but I have not found anything related so far. Is there anyway to (re)configure the new Firefox v15.0 to let me access the about:newtab page via a tab's history? EDIT: It appears that this only affects the initial 'visit' to the about:newtab page when opening a new tab, manually visiting about:newtab will register it as a history entry and allow it to be navigated to via the back and forward buttons. So I guess this changes my question to 'How can I make Firefox 15.0 treat the inital page from a newtab as a history entry'.

• System Center 2012 VMM UI is very slow

  I've recently setup system center 2012 a new server 2008 r2 server which I'm using for virtual machines. Everything seems to be working fine, and the virtual machines are nice and fast. But the Virtual Machine Manager interface is always excruciatingly slow. Sometimes taking up to 15 seconds moving between screens. It's very frustrating trying to use it when a task that just involves a couple clicks ends up taking several minutes. Pages that have a lot of form fields seem to take the longest to load - such as the page to change hardware settings of a virtual machine. Is this just normal performance for VMM? If not, where can I look to find what is slowing it down. Nothing else on the system seems to suffer. I can load and use Hyper-V manager with no noticable slowness. Even programs like event viewer that are usually rather slow seem to load fairly fast. Only the system center programs seem slow. Server is a Dell R710, 2x16 core opteron 6274 processors, 96GB RAM. OS drive is 2x500GB 7.2k RPM SAS drives in RAID1 (opted for the less expensive 7.2k drives since pretty much everything is stored on the SAN). Am I just being impatient? Does anyone else use VMM 2012 and find it slow?

  i have an HP dm3t notebook which normally comes with windows 7. after some time i figured out how to install Windows XP on it. but now i am facing a problem that the brightess controls dont work so i am unable to change the brightess. the strange thing is that all the other buttons (sound volume, mute, sleep , etc... ) works but not the 2 brightess controls. i already downloaded the "HP Quick Launch Buttons" so i am asking about suggesitions how can i enable these two buttons in windows XP or even if i can change the brightess using some kind of software. thanks

• Cannot change power button or lid close action

  I have a Samsung 900x laptop and I want to change it so that when I close the lid, nothing happens (I often close the lid to carry it somewhere 10 seconds away, and by putting it into suspend it cancels any active downloads/etc). Easy, right? Go to Power Options and change it there; just like on every other laptop in the world. Not so fast: Saywhat?! That message only shows up for the nodes for Lid Close Action, Power Button and Sleep Button. I can change every other setting except for those three. I'm definately an Administrator on the computer, and I've googled the error and found dozens of hits on other crappy forums, but of course nothing on those worked (otherwise, I wouldn't be here). And as ususal the "Why can't..." hyperlink gives no useful infomation what so ever (just a generic Help document). So - how can I change what closing the lid does? I will modify the registry directly if I have to.

• Working with an external button box

  I tried this question on Stack Overflow, but I was pointed here, so here goes: For a new project for myself, I am looking for a way to be able to (for example) open a pop-up window on my laptop, by pressing a button on an external device (to be build by myself, or at least bought) connected with USB. Basically I would be looking at something like a Arduino or Raspberry (IF I am looking in the right direction) with buttons on it, and as soon as I hit a button on the external box with physical buttons, a command activates on my laptop and for example opens a popup window in which I can input tekst. Does anyone know: 1) if it is possible to do this at all. 2) What equipment is needed for the external box, what programming is needed. I preffer .net (dot net) but maybe it can only be done with software from the external box. If anyone can point me in the right direction, like make/model of the external box or websites I would be very happy. I have knowledge of Visual Studio/.net but I am willing to learn other languages if .net is not an option for this project. Thanks in advance Scott PS: If anyone knows of some better tags, or at least knows what I mean and needs me to edit the question, please do tell me... I am new on Stack Overflow/Superuser.

• Why do Floatbox popups stop other animations when finished closing?

  I'm trying to essentially run a callback function when a Floatbox popup is closed via a hyperlink inside the popup. I want the page to scroll to the top and my login box to fade in. I'm using the following code: function showLogin() { jQuery('#header_no_theme_login_popup', parent.document.body).show(); window.parent.window.scrollTo(0,0); window.parent.fb.end(); } This works fine, but if I try to use jQuery fadeIn, the fade effect is truncated when the Floatbox popup finishes closing, leaving it with partial opacity. jQuery scrollTo doesn't seem to want to work at all. • Update UI from an event with a thread

  Im working on a small application to try out an idea that I have. The idea is to periodically update the UI when event of some sort occurs. In the demo I've created, I'm updating a ProgressDialog every 2 seconds for 15 turns. The problem I am having, which I don't quite understand is that when an event is handled, I send a message to the handler which is supposed to update the message in the ProgressDialog. When this happens however, I get an exception which states that I can't update the UI from that thread. • Accessing Server-Side Data from Client Script: Using Ajax Web Services, Script References, and jQuery

  Today's websites commonly exchange information between the browser and the web server using Ajax techniques. In a nutshell, the browser executes JavaScript code typically in response to the page loading or some user action. This JavaScript makes an asynchronous HTTP request to the server. The server processes this request and, perhaps, returns data that the browser can then seamlessly integrate into the web page. Typically, the information exchanged between the browser and server is serialized into JSON, an open, text-based serialization format that is both human-readable and platform independent. Adding such targeted, lightweight Ajax capabilities to your ASP.NET website requires two steps: first, you must create some mechanism on the server that accepts requests from client-side script and returns a JSON payload in response; second, you need to write JavaScript in your ASP.NET page to make an HTTP request to this service you created and to work with the returned results. This article series examines a variety of techniques for implementing such scenarios. In Part 1 we used an ASP.NET page and the JavaScriptSerializer class to create a server-side service. • Formatting minified jQuery, JavaScript using the Internet Explorer 9 Developer Toolbar

  Much has been talked about the F12 developer toolbar in IE and the support it provides for web developers.  Starting IE8, the Developer Toolbar is a menu item that helps you view the page source, scripts, profiling and many other details of the rendered page.  It even allows script debugging from within and that makes it a truly powerful web developer tool bar. With IE9, the developer toolbar got even better with the Networking Tab that allows you to inspect the traffic/time taken and drill down into the Request/Response headers and other specifics. The script tab allows you to view the scripts used in the page. One of the challenges of working with JavaScript / jQuery when they are minified, is that, it becomes really hard to read.  Minified JavaScript is a compression technique and also a best practice for delivering faster web pages.  However, when you would like to debug, minified JavaScript files become very hard since they aren't properly formatted.  Take the case of the above sample, which is a basic MVC 3 Web Application.  It uses the minified jQuery and modernizr files. • Ridiculously easy AJAX with ASP.NET MVC and jQuery

• Checking All Checkboxes in a GridView Using jQuery

  In May 2006 I wrote two articles that showed how to add a column of checkboxes to a GridView and offer the ability for users to check (or uncheck) all checkboxes in the column with a single click of the mouse. The first article, Checking All CheckBoxes in a GridView, showed how to add "Check All" and "Uncheck All" buttons to the page above the GridView that, when clicked, checked or unchecked all of the checkboxes. The second article, Checking All CheckBoxes in a GridView Using Client-Side Script and a Check All CheckBox, detailed how to add a checkbox to the checkbox column in the grid's header row that would check or uncheck all checkboxes in the column. Both articles showed how to implement such functionality on the client-side, thereby removing the need for a postback. The JavaScript presented in these two previous articles still works, but the techniques used are a bit antiquated and hamfisted given the advances made in JavaScript programming over the past few years. For instance, the script presented in the previous articles uses server-side code in the GridView's DataBound event handler to assign a client-side onclick event handler to each checkbox. While this works, it violates the tenets of unobtrusive JavaScript, which is a design guideline for JavaScript programming that encourages a clean separation of functionality from presentation. (Ideally, event handlers for HTML elements are defined in script.) Also, the quantity of JavaScript used in the two previous articles is quite hefty compared to the amount of code that would be needed using modern JavaScript libraries like jQuery.
