• How can I write a "user can only access own profile page" type of security check in Play Framework?

  I have a Play framework application that has a model like this: A Company has one and only one User associated with it. I have URLs like http://www.example.com/companies/1234, http://www.example.com/companies/1234/departments, http://www.example.com/companies/1234/departments/employees and so on. The numbers are the company id's, not the user id's. I want that normal users (not admins) should only be able to access their own profile pages, not other people's profile pages. So a user associated with the company with id 1234 should not be able to access the URL http://www.example.com/companies/6789 I tried to accomplish this by overriding Secure.check() and comparing the request parameter "id" to the ID of the company associated with the logged in user. However, this obviously fails if the parameter is called anything else than "id". Does anyone know how this could be accomplished?

• PHP File Serving Script: Unreliable Downloads?

  This post started as a question on ServerFault ( http://serverfault.com/questions/131156/user-receiving-partial-downloads ) but I determined that our php script was the culprit. So I'm issuing an updated question here about what I believe is the actual issue. I am using a php script to verify permissions and then serve up a file for users of my website to download. Most of the time, this works, but recently one user has been seeing problems with larger downloads. He is only getting ~80% of downloads for files that are 100MB in size. Also, all downloads from this script fail to report a filesize. Further, tests revealed that the same user COULD reliably download each of the failed files if given a direct link (at which point the filesize is reported). Here's the relevant snippet of code that we are using to serve the file: header("Content-type:$contenttype"); $len = filesize($filename); header("Content-Length: $len"); header("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=".$title.".".$ext); readfile($filename); Note that $contenttype, $filename, $title, and $ext are all set correctly before we get here. These have been triple-checked. None of them are the problem. Also, $len does provide the correct filesize. While researching this issue, I came across this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1334471/content-length-header-always-zero It seems that I am encountering the same issue. When I use the script, I get chunked encoding on the file and no size is set for content-length. I'm hypothesizing that something is going wrong on the large downloads, leading him to get a zero-length chunk before the end of the file. • Is it inmoral to put a captcha on a login form?

  In a recent project I put a captcha test on a login form, in order to stop possible brute force attacks. The inmediate reaction of other coworkers was a request to remove it, saying that it was innapropiate for that purpose, and that it was quite exotic to see a captcha in that place. I've seen captcha images on signup, contact, password recovery forms, etc. So I personally don't see innapropiate to put a captcha also on a place like that. Well, it obviously burns down usability a little bit, but it's a matter of time and getting used to it. With the lack of a captcha test, one would have to put some sort of blacklist / account locking mechanism, which also has some drawbacks. Is it a good choice for you? Am I getting somewhat captcha-aholic and need some sort of group therapy? Thanks in advance.

• Load first page on splashscreen using phonegap on android

  Hi i'm using phonegap in conjunction with Jquery mobile. I'm trying to immediately fetch the main page, while showing the user a splashscreen. In PhoneGap for Android i'm using this super.setIntegerProperty("splashscreen", R.drawable.splash); super.loadUrl("file:///android_asset/www/index.html", 2000); While this loads the splash, it also delays the loading of index.html. It it possible to start fetching it right away? Also, if not with phonegap, has anybody done this using JQM instead of phonegap? UPDATE: After using it with a slower loading first page (doing a json request) it kinda looks like the splash screens shows for a longer period of time, so this appears to be the default behavior

  This is what I think of REST architecture. For every resource, there is an unique URI. We can manipulate that object using its URI and HTTP actions [POST, GET, PUT and DELETE]. The HTTP request transfers the representation of the state of that object. In all the texts I have read, REST is explained in a weird and confusing manner. One more thing, RESTFUL implementation in rails produces different urls for different purposes. Like /teams - for 'index' method... /teams/new - for 'new' method and so on. Ain't this moving away from rest, which defines that each resource has one unique URI???

Considering that resources are already defined in routes.rb I was expecting it to work easily, bute somehow when I click the save button it calls the create method, instead of update, using a POST http request. Inmediatly after that it autocatically log out form the session. Any ideas?

  Hi, I did some changes to my model (but I don't want migration yet, so I just remove the application, built clean etc.) so my application works in the simulator. However, when I run it on the iPhone, I get the following error: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'executeFetchRequest:error: A fetch request must have an entity.' I set the entity like this: NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Document" inManagedObjectContext:managedObjectContext]; My managedObjectContext is not nil. But I suspect that it doesn't load the object model correctly or something similar because If I display the entities in the model, the list is empty. How can I make sure the model is loaded? Thanks,

• Upload files with java

  I'd like to upload a few files to a http server. Basically what i need is some sort of a post request to the server with a few parameters and the files. I've seen examples of just uploading files, but didn't find how to also pass additional parameters. So the question would be what's the simplest and free solution of doing this? Does anyone have any file upload examples that i could study? I've been googling for a few hours, but (maybe it's just one of those days) couldn't find exactly what i needed. The best solution would be something that doesn't involve any third party classes or libraries. Thank you

• Safari extension cookies not recognized/passed

  I've recently been porting a Chrome extension to Safari, and encountered this kind of error (bug, feature, etc.) So, in global page i have a XMLHTTP request to a secure page which is available only after you login. Example: I simply login using browser - as usually you do on facebook or other secure pages After that, in global page, I load a login-only-available xmlhttp - and it says i'm not logged in it seems that global page somewhat has it's own cookies, so a secure page thinks i'm new ps: in Chrome i can load that page and it thinks i'm acting on behalf of logged in user, so i guess there are some restrictions in Safari pps: i heard there's a Block third-party cookies option in Safari, but even if i checked it to "Never block" it still doesn't work

• Using NSURLRequest+NSURLConnection seems overkill for a webcall with no data return

  All, This might seems very straightforward but I have already gone through the URL loading system program guide and the various NSURL.... classes and not found my answer. And it seems overkill to do a call using NSData where there is no data return.   Hi I made a script for IPN which works great but how can i immediately notify the user? I mean paypal redirects the customer to a custom-page i can define, simultanously my ipn.php checked the status, BUT how can i immediately tell the customer on this custom-page that it was successful or not. this custom-page does somehow has to know that this is the customer-xyz which made the ipn-verified!!! payment xyz, but how? i think also this custom-page redirect should wait the 5 seconds because php does only process files/request on-loads... so after 5 seconds the ipnscript surely did complete. Sorry if this question is too newby but i dont know how to notify the customer about the (ipn-verified!!!) payment-status immediately. How do you do this? Thanks so much

• How do I draw an ESB on a SoaML diagram?

  I've recently had to draw some architectural diagrams that feature the use of an Enterprise Service Bus. The ESB is critical, so everyone wants it to show up on the diagram. But since it's the center of what everything is connected to, it really of gets in the way. I settled on trying to use SoaML. I color-coded the request points blue and service points green, to help then stand out. The text names on the ports give you a sense of what talks to what, and it's incredibly obvious that everything goes through the ESB. Can anyone comment on my approach? Any suggestions on something better?

  Hi guys, Is there any way to find out if ASP.Net runtime has served a cached copy of ASPX page or actually went through the page life cycle? Here is my problem: I'm seeing many entries in my IIS log files that were served successfully (200 OK). I've a corresponding logging code (Log4Net API) in the Session_Start and Application_BeginRequest() events that is logging every request to my DB with more details. I'm not seeing any corresponding entries in my SQL DB for some cases that should have been created by Log4Net code. Are there any logs available to find out if a cached copy was served by .NET worker process? Moreover, if my logging code would throw an exception, won't that show up as 500 in IIS logs? The code is on Windows 2008 Server, IIS 7.

  I learned an example of usage of sockets. In this example a client sends a request to a server to open a socket and then the server (listening to a specific port) opens a socket and everything is fine, socket is "opened" from both sides (client and server). But it is still not clear to me how flexible is this stuff. For example, is it possible for the client to close an opened (from both ends) socket and to reopen it again (under condition that the server keeps the socket opened). Is it possible for the server to "know" that a socket was closed on the client side? Is it possible for the client to know that a socket was closed on the server side?

  We have a bunch of formsets: EmailAddressInlineFormSet = generic_inlineformset_factory( EmailAddress, extra=1, exclude=["created_by","last_modified_by"]) emailaddressformset = EmailAddressInlineFormSet( instance=person, prefix="emailaddress") # [ more definitions ] and, in the view, we process them as: emailaddressformset = EmailAddressInlineFormSet( request.POST, instance=person, prefix="emailaddress") # [ more definitions ] So, nothing fancy or unordinary. The unfortunate or unordinary fact is, we have 15 of these formsets, one for email addresses, other for phone numbers etc. so the view code is ugly and not-so-manageable. What would be the most unhackish way to handle this number of formsets in a single view? At the end -i guess- I'm looking for a class or a functionality like multiple_generic_inline_formset and open to all kind of suggestions or discussions.
