• Why does my .NET Windows service not start automatically sometimes?

  Hi all, I have modified a working Windows service that had always been starting beforehand. After adding the System.Management reference it now sometimes will not start automatically. I get the following error: Service cannot be started. System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80010002): Call was canceled by the message filter. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010002 (RPC_E_CALL_CANCELED)) I found another post here on SO with someone having the same issue. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/998883/why-wont-my-net-windows-service-start-automatically-after-a-reboot However, the proposed solution was to have the service start after the services it depends on have started. However, when I go to the Dependencies tab for my service, I see: Should I just use the workaround method of putting the thread to sleep, or is there a more proper way of getting this service to start correctly? Is this happening because .NET has not started before my service starts? Thanks, Tomek

• Pass data to Master Page with ASP.NET MVC

  I have a hybrid ASP.NET WebForms/MVC project. In my Master Page, I have a "menu" User Control and a "footer" User Control. Anyways. I need to pass some data (2 strings) to my "menu" User Control on my Master Page (to select the current tab in my menu navigation, etc.) My views are strongly-typed to my data model. How can I push data from my controller to my menu or at least allow my master page to access some data pre-defined in my controller? Note: I understand this violates pure ASP.NET MVC, but like I said, it is a hybrid project. The main purpose of my introduction to ASP.NET MVC into my project was to have more control over my UI for certain situations only.

• Silverlight Threading and its usage

  Hello Experts, Scenario : I am working on LOB application, as in silverlight every call to service is Async so automatically UI is not blocked when the request is processed at server side. Silverlight also supports threading as per my understanding if you are developing LOB application threads are most useful when you need to do some IO operation but as i am not using OOB application it is not possible to access client resource and for all server request it is by default Async. In above scenario is there any usage of Threading or can anyone provide some good example where by using threading we can improve performance. I have tried to search a lot on this topic but everywhere i have identified some simple threading example from which it is very difficult to understand the real benefit. Thanks for help

  Hi Guys, I am trying to write an Add-In to Powerpoint that does basically one thing: Give users a Button somewhere to click, once they click on it the currently selected TextField should get syntax highlighted. The Syntax highlighting part is easy, I'm just having a real hard time finding some good information on how to successfully interact with Powerpoint from code. There are some MSDN articles highlighting how to add controls on document start or AddSlide, but no good information on how to extend the UI. Has anyone had some experience in this field and could point me to some resource that may help? Also, I am running Powerpoint 2007 while my customer may end up running PPT2003.   I am having trouble binding a Command that is generated up the UI tree to a control. The following example illustrates my point, the CommandBinding in Grid does not act on the InputBindings in Window.   In extension of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1580750/example-code-of-libssh2-being-used-for-port-forwarding I was wondering if there's an "easier" way to connect to the locally binded addr:port. From the link: you bind a remote port and list it locally, you accept incoming data from the port and send it to another socket (namely the local addr:port), after which I'd like to connect to the local addr:port. Is there a way to skip the "send it to another" step and direct the data directly for my "connect to localhost" ? There are two parts to why I want this, first, it seems excessive, and in the spirit of piping, I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible. Second, since I'm trying to connect to a localhost'ed bound port forward, all code is in the same thread, making a continiously getting data-sending data, and polling the sending data from another socket, a bit tricky.   Hi There, I'm writing for iphone OS 3.1.3. I want the search button in the keyboard from my UISearchBar to have the search button enabled all the time. If this was any old UITextField (not a search bar) the property would be enablesReturnKeyAutomatically.   I once tried to implement Comet in PHP. Soon, I found that PHP is not suitable for Comet, since each HTTP request will occupy one process/thread. As a result, it doesn't scale well. I just installed mod_python in my XAMPP. I thought it would be easy to implement Comet with Python asynchronous programming. But still cannot get a clue how to implement it. Is there any idea how to implement Comet in mod_python?

• In NHibernate, how do I combine two DetachedCriteria instances

  My scenario is this: I have a base NHibernate query to run of the form (I've coded it using DetachedCriteria , but describe it here using SQL syntax): SELECT * FROM Items I INNER JOIN SubItems S on S.FK = I.Key The user interface to show the results of this join allows the user to specify additional criteria: Say: I.SomeField = 'UserValue'. Now, I need the final load command to be: SELECT * FROM Items I INNER JOIN SubItems S on S.FK = I.Key WHERE I.SomeField = 'UserValue' My problem is: I've created a DetachedCriteria with the 'static' aspect of the query (the top join) and the UI creates a DetachedCriteria with the 'dynamic' component of the query. I need to combine the two into a final query that I can execute on the NHibernate session. DefaultCriteria.Add() takes an ICriterion (which are created using the Expression class, and maybe other classes I don't know of which could be the solution to my problem). Does anyone know how I might do what I want?

• Sharepoint Web Part OnPreRender PostBack Dynamic TextBoxes Not Accessible In Button Handler

  I have a custom webpart which extends System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebPart and implements an EditorPart. I have all the static controls being added in the overridden CreateChildControls method as I know this makes them persistent across PostBacks. However, I have some TextBoxes being added in the overridden OnPreRender method because the actual TextBoxes that I add depend upon the data returned from a Web Service which I am calling in OnPreRender. The Web Service has to be called in OnPreRender because I need some of the Property values that are set in the EditorPart. If I build this logic into the CreateChildControls method, obviously the data is not available on first PostBack after an edit is applied because the PostBack events are restored after CreateChildControls. This means the page has to be posted twice before the data is refreshed and that is just cludgy. How can make these TextBoxes along with their entered text values persistent across PostBacks so that I can access them in the button handler? Thanks for any help, Matt

• Outlook 2003 add-in - Getting COM exception on application shutdown after creating WPF window

  Hi! I'm developing an outlook 2003 add-in. Until now I used only winforms to display one form, but today I've added a WPF window for more complex stuff. DUe to the WPF window, a COM exception is being thrown when outlook shuts down. Does anybody know why? I need to start a separate thread for the WPF window in single apartment state. • WPF slow to start on x64 in .NET Framework 4.0

  I've noticed that if I build my WPF application for Any CPU/x64, it takes MUCH longer to start (on the order of about 20 seconds) or to load new controls than it does if started on x86 (in release & debug modes, inside or outside of VS). This occurs with even the simplest WPF apps. The problem is discussed in this MSDN thread, but no answer was provided there. This happens only with .NET 4.0 -- in 3.5 SP1, x64 was just as fast as x86. Interestingly, Microsoft seems to know about this problem since the default for a new WPF project in VS2010 is x86. Is this a real bug or am I just doing it wrong? EDIT: Possibly related to this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2788215/slow-databinding-setup-time-in-c-net-4-0. I'm using data binding heavily.

• Schema compare with MS Data Tools in VS2008

  When performing a schema compare having db_owner rights on the target database results in the following error: The user does not have permission to perform this action. Using the SQL Server Profiler I figured out this error occurs executing a query targeting the master db view: [sys].[dm_database_encryption_keys] While specifically ignoring all object types but Tables one would presume the SQL Compare doesn't need access to the db encryption keys. Also note: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vstsdb/thread/c11a5f8a-b9cc-454f-ba77-e1c69141d64b/ One solution would be to GRANT VIEW SERVER STATE to the db user, but in my case I'm not hosting the database services and won't get the rights to the server state. • Return extra data besides tree data from ExtJS TreeLoader dataUrl?

  I asked this question in the Ext JS forums, but I received no responses, so I am asking here. I have a TreePanel (code below) that uses a TreeLoader and an AsyncTreeNode. In my API method specified by the TreeLoader's dataUrl, I return a JSON array to populate the tree. This works great, of course. However, I need to return an additional item--an integer--in addition to the array, and I need to display that value somewhere else in my UI. Is this possible? If not, what else would be a good solution? We have a layered, distributed application that has multiple entry points (ie; a website, winforms app, office plugin etc). Depending on how you are using the solution (through a UI vs. an automated workflow for example), it needs to be configured slightly differently. We are using Windsor, and it's fluent configuration capabilities.

To be honest, I'm not even sure where to start on this one - never guessed it would be so much trouble to add a component right from the disk. Any help or pointers whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. If any more details are needed, please ask - I'd be glad to add them.

• Desktop Application Development with Javascript, Python / Ruby

  Hello, Besides using Appcelerator's Titanium Desktop, are there other approaches to integrating Javascript and Ruby/Python into cross-platform desktop applications? Just trying to get a sense of the landscape here. From searching the web, it seems Titanium may be leading the charge in terms of this type of integration. I wasn't able to find references that suggest you can do something similar in Adobe AIR. I am interested in building desktop applications that exploit Protovis and possibly other Javascript interactive vis packages for the UI. At the end of the day, I can go the web app route if need be, but being able to develop desktop apps is helpful. Would appreciate your perspective on this... Chris

  In another thread I got convinced into using HTML parsers instead of regexps for HTML parsing (I thought they would work fine, but they didn't ;) ). I thought of using libxml (it has some HTML parser built in), but failed to find any useful tutorial. I also found this site and it says here it should do fine even with severly broken HTML. Could you give me some examples of HTML parsing with libxml, or maybe recommend some different free library for Linux? I'm using C++. I just thought someone would have some example code, so that I don't have to analyze the headers ;)

• How to update model?

  Hi, guys. I have an ASP.NET MVC page where the model is being edited. On each action executing I have a new controller, so I don't get an updated model. I'm saving a model instance into Session["MyModelKey"]. But every time an action is executed, I have unmodified instance there even if I have changed values in textboxes which were created like this: @Html.LabelFor(model = model.EMail) @Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.EMail) @Html.LabelFor(model = model.Country) @Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.Country) @Html.ActionLink("MyAction", "MyController") Controller: public class MyController : Controller { public ActionResult MyAction() { //Every time this action is executed - I have a new controller instance //So I have null in View.Model //I get Session["MyModelKey"] here, //But the model instance properties are not updated //even though I have updated E-mail and Country properties of the model in the UI } } So, how can I get an updated model?
