  • How to turn on Airport on MacBook Pro

    Hi, I am using MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.5). On the status bar, check I click the Wireless icon, it said 'Open Network Preferences' And then in the Network Preference, I click 'AirPort' tab, the status said 'Inactive' But the 'Turn AirPort on' is disabled and the Network Name is disabled as well. I have unlocked the preference pane as well. So how can I turn on Airport? Thank you.

    Dear all, I'm using OpenOffice as a daemon. Sometimes, when the daemon is running a long time, CPU use spikes very high and then openoffice crash. At this point, the open office applicattion don't work and the documents don't be generated. How can I restart automatically the openoffice daemon when this problem happens?     What's the difference between VMWare Player vs Workstation? Is it that Player is for non-commercial use and workstation isn't? For someone who builds and tests applications at home for non-commercial use, is it worth paying for a Workstation license? Do I get any benefits over Player? (Note: I realize there's open source solutions like VirtualBox, but am more interested in the differences between Player and Workstation.) Thanks!

  • Windows 7 boot log missing?

    After hitting F8 before startup and selecting "enable boot logging", I let windows try to start up and blue screen / restart (which I'm currently trying to troubleshoot) - I run the 'repair' function, open a command prompt, and try to find the boot log file, which I expected to be at %SystemRoot%\ntbtlog.txt - but it's not. Where is it? PS - probably makes no difference, but this is windows 7 ultimate 64bit to be precise.

  • How force text-only pasting in emacs?

    On my mac I always have an emacs buffer open and occasionally I have to copy content from PowerPoint or Word. Unfortunately, copying to the clipboard and yanking into emacs saves all the ugly formatting (and graphics) from the original document. I only want to paste in the text (and never the formatting). My current solution is to paste into TextWrangler and then repaste into emacs. What's a better way to do this?

  • Spell check doesn't work in protected forms in Word 2011 for Mac

    We have a form template many staff members use. We created it in Word 2004 for Mac, and I was told a shortcoming was there was no way to turn on the spell checker (a real hassle!). I hoped this would be fixed in 2011, but when I open the form and save it as a .docx, the spell check still doesn't work. Many menu choices, including Language and Spelling and Grammar are grayed. Is there any way to get spell check in a protected, fillable form?

    I have an mdf file of sql server 2005 database now i want it to attach in sql server 2008 R2 but when i try to attach it, it gave me error saying. Unable to open the physical file "D:\Fraz\Freelance\Database\DBmdf13aug\mbh_pk.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".     Here's the scenario: Work network - I have a Mac and a PC - OS X is Snow Leopard - Windows 7 I am trying to connect to the PC from the Mac. IT ONLY works if I turn off the firewall in Windows. I tried to trace the port and connection it was using, it appears to be on port 445 via TCP. I really prefer not to leave this open, or is it OK? How can I only allow this connection while still leaving the firewall on?

    Mac OS X's Finder seems to be the equivalent to Windows Explorer. In Windows, I enjoy having multiple instances of Explorer open to move/copy files from one folder in a window, to another folder in another window. How can I achieve this in Snow Leopard? I'd like to have shortcut key, as well as a dock icon solution. Or maybe there's a better program than Finder out there that does this?

    I'm trying to get MySQL to function as a backend for authenticating users on CentOS 6.3. So far I have successfully installed and configured libnss-mysql. The sftp group is chrooted and forced to use internal-sftp so they cannot do anything but access their home directory. Then I configured pam-mysql and PAM to allow mysql logins. This also works..     I have all PostgreSQL databases backed up during incremental backups using WHM, which creates a $dbName.tar file. Data is stored in these .tar files, but I do not know how to restore it back into the individual databases via SSH. In particular the file location. I have been using: pg_restore -d client03 /backup/cpbackup/daily/client03/psql/client03.tar which generates the error 'could not open input file: Permission denied' Any assistance appreciated.

  • Good Linux disaster-ready filesystem?

    I'm working on this emergency open wi-fi network project and it includes a local website (nginx + MySQL). In order to eliminate SPOFs, we're going to setup at least two of everything (server, switch, router, etc.). This network is thought to work when an earthquake strikes and it's very likely to a server to go to down, if so, we need to be able to boot them up and be operating as soon as possible. Do any of you know if any linux filesystem would work better than others in this scenario?

  • Is it reasonable that a random disk seek & read costs ~16ms?

    I am frustrated about the latency of random reading from a non-ssd disk. Based on results from following test program, it speeds ~16 ms for a random read of just 512 bytes without help of os cache. I tried changing 512 to larger values, such as 25k, and the latency did not increase as much. I guess it is because the disk seek dominates the time.
