• For what purpose I can use c++ to increase my skills?

  I want to learn new things. Initially I was a PHP programmer. Then I thought it was not enough. Then I started learning Java thing. It took me 3 months to learn. Java, J2EE, Spring, Hibernte, Spring Security, Spring Roo and many design patterns MVC and stuff like AOP, DI . I never knew that before but I got the idea what J2EE. After 3 months, I just made a simple page with Registration form integrated with Spring Security. I wanted to make one complete project in it but that was too much for me and I didn't want spend more time on it as then i need to host that as well so I left that. Then I started learning Python and made few sys admin scripts and then Django and now I am finishing a complete web app in Python. Now I want to learn C++, but before that I need to find out what i can do with it. Just like I know Python is very useful because I have my own servers so I can write scripting and websites so Python is good for me. But I am confused in which areas C++ can help me. I don't want to end up like I have with Java where either I have big projects or nothing for day to day use.

  I am asking this in very general sense. Both from cloud provider and cloud consumer's perspective. Also the question is not for any specific kind of application (in fact the intention is to know which type of applications/domains can fit into which of the cloud slab -SaaS PaaS IaaS). My understanding so far is: IaaS: Raw Hardware (Processors, Networks, Storage). PaaS: OS, System Softwares, Development Framework, Virtual Machines. SaaS: Software Applications. It would be great if Stackoverflower's can share their understanding and experiences of cloud computing concept. EDIT: Ok, I will put it in more specific way - Amazon EC2: You don't have control over hardware layer. But you can take your choice of OS image, Dev Framework (.NET, J2EE, LAMP) and Application and put it on EC2 hardware. Can you deploy an applications built with Google App Engine or Azure on EC2? Google App Engine: You don't have control over hardware and OS and you get a specific Dev Framework to build your application. Can you take any existing Java or Python application and port it to GAE? Or vice versa, can applications that were built on GAE be taken out of GAE and ported to any Application Server like Websphere or Weblogic? Azure: You don't have control over hardware and OS and you get a specific Dev Framework to build your application. Can you take any existing .NET application and port it to Azure? Or vice versa, can applications that were built on Azure be taken out of Azure and ported to any Application Server like Biztalk?

• How do you Access an Authenticated Google App Engine Service with Ruby?

  I am trying to do this same thing here but with Ruby: Access Authenticated GAE Client with Python. Any ideas how to retrieve authenticated content from GAE with Ruby? I am using the Ruby GData Gem to access everything in Google Docs and such and it's making life very easy, but now I'd like to access things on GAE that require admin access, programmatically, and it doesn't support that. • Debugging a Google Web Toolkit application that has an error when deployed on Google App Engine

  I have a Google Web Toolkit application that I am deploying to Google App Engine. In the deployed application, I am getting a JavaScript error Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'f' of null. This sounds like the JavaScript equivalent of a Java NullPointerException. The problem is that the GWT JavaScript is obfuscated, so it's impossible to debug in the browser and I can't reproduce the same problem in hosted mode where I could use the Java debugger. I think the reason I'm only seeing the error on the deployed application is that the database I'm using on the GAE server is triggering something differently than the test database I'm using during testing and development. So, any ideas about the best way to proceed? I've thought of the following things: Deploy a non-obsfucated version of my application. Despite a lot of Googling, I can't figure out how to do this using the automatic deploy script provided with the Google Eclipse Plugin. Does anyone know? Download and copy my GAE data to the local server Somehow point my development code to use the GAE server for data instead of the local test database. This seems like the best idea... Can anyone suggest how to proceed here? Finally, is there a way to catch these JavaScript errors on the production server and log them somewhere? Without logging, I won't have anyway to know if my users are having errors that don't occur on the server. The GWT.log() function is automatically stripped out of the production code...

• Loading child entities with JPA on Google App Engine

  I am not able to get child entities to load once they are persisted on Google App Engine. I am certain that they are saving because I can see them in the datastore. I'm using version 1.3.3.1 of the SDK. I've seen the problem mentioned on various blogs and even the App Engine forums but the answer is always JDO related. Am I doing something wrong or has anyone else had this problem and solved it for JPA?

• Why is there still so much offer for Perl programmers?

  A quick search on monster.com on different scripting languages resulted on Perl having much more job opportunities than Python and Ruby (in Europe, I didn't check for the rest of the world), and since I'm just a newbie programmer I was wondering why is this? I've read everywhere that Python and Ruby are much better languages, and much more organized. Having coded in python and php myself, Perl's code seems so alien to me. Anyways, sorry for my poor English, it's my second language, and this is not a critique on the Perl language, I was just wondering whether it's a good idea to learn it at this point or not.

I'm still a novice (I've been doing it for about a year), so the majority of my code pertains to only two fields (GUI design in Python and basic algorithms in C/C++). I have become intrigued with how the actual languages themselves are written. I mean this in both senses. Such as how it was literally written (ie, what language the language was written in). As well as various features like white spacing (Python) or object orientation (C++ and Python). Where would one start learning how to write a language? What are some of the fundamentals of language design, things that would make it a "complete" language?

• Best/Easiest Technology for a RESTful webservice [closed]

  So I'm going to be creating a phone app + website that will need to utilize a web service. Webservices are completely outside my domain so I'm not entirely sure where to start. Does anybody have any suggestions on the technology stack I should use? (mainly in terms of ease of use and reliability) So far what I've looked at are: RoR Python + Django + TastyPie Python + Flask Microsoft WCF 3.5 PHP + some framework I would rather not do anything with Java I'm leaning towards the Python + Django + TastyPie route as it seems like it would be easy to get up and going and learn in general. My only concern with it is the reliability of the libraries (feature breaking updates, abandonment, etc). Also I would prefer to create the website with the same framework so I wouldn't have to deal with learning and using two different ones. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

  I've recently been enjoying using the mathematical problems listed at Project Euler to learn Python. My Excel ability is better than my Python, but I think I'd still benefit from the sort of inductive learning that comes with solving a series of increasingly difficult puzzles using a particular tool. I know Project Euler can be completed using Excel, but are there any other puzzle series similar to this or The Python Challenge specifically tailored for people trying to increase their knowledge of Excel and what it can do? NB. I'm not looking for a "tutorial", I know there are plenty of these. And apologies if this isn't completely appropriate for programmers.SE.com - some of the folks at SuperUser suggested it was a better fit here than there!

• How to make custom libraries accessible?

  I am trying to compile and install every custom module under it's own designated folder. (ex: /myApps/myLinux/compiled_app) I had luck with python so far, where my python is compiled from source and lives in: /myApps/myLinux/python2.5 and "python2.5" - /myApps/myLinux/python2.5.6-gcc463 so I can access this python through a wrapper script that sets the right environment. The question is recently I had to compile and add something called gperf3.0.4. So now it lives: /myApps/myLinux/gperf3.0 and "gperf3.0" - /myApps/myLinux/gperf3.0.4-gcc463 The question is: How will I point to this lib if some other app needs to access it? Is it done through the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable? Thanks.

• Is type safety worth the trade-offs?

  I began coding in in Python primarily where there is no type safety, then moved to C# and Java where there is. I found that I could work a bit more quickly and with less headaches in Python, but then again, my C# and Java apps are at much higher level of complexity so I have never given Python a true stress test I suppose. The Java and C# camps make it sound like without the type safety in place, most people would be running into all sorts of horrible bugs left an right and it would be more trouble than its worth. This is not a language comparison, so please do not address issues like compiled vs interpreted. Is type safety worth the hit to speed of development and flexibilty? WHY? to the people who wanted an example of the opinion that dynamic typing is faster: "Use a dynamically typed language during development. • What's shell script's advantage over interpreted programming languages?

  (I'm not sure if it's a appropriate question here) Shell script, like bash, can do many things. It can call Unix programs, pipe their output, redirect I/O from/to files, control flow, check whether a file exists, etc. But a modern programming language, e.g, python and ruby, can also do these all. And their are (I think) more readable and maintainable. bash is worldwide spreaded. But many distributions have installed python interpreter, too. So what's the advantage of shell script? If I could write python, ruby or perl, is it worth to learn bash?

• How to choose a language, when taking in account the community it includes?

  I was reading the following article: Great Hackers The following part grabbed my attention: "When you choose a language, you're also choosing a community. The programmers you'll be able to hire to work on a Java project won't be as smart as the ones you could get to work on a project written in Python. And the quality of your hackers probably matters more than the language you choose. Though, frankly, the fact that good hackers prefer Python to Java should tell you something about the relative merits of those languages." I would like to apply his advice on a commercial web application I am building (I am a strong believer in culture and community), yet this article was written in 2004, and python has increased in popularity in the recent years. How can I decided a language when taking in consideration its community, rather than the popularity? Any recommendations? Is there any language community that show dedication and passion for developing, rather than learning a language to get a Job and a paycheck?

• What is a *slightly* less extreme equivalent to being "fluent" in a language?

  tl;dr: What is a less extreme (but still noticeable) alternative to the word "fluent", when saying e.g. "I am fluent in C++/Python/whatever?" I think I can call myself "fluent" in C#, because I know the language and runtime very well, and I'm very familiar with the .NET framework's APIs and classes, etc. I would like to claim the same thing for Python and C++. But while I can program in Python (I did so for an entire summer, making a website with Django), for example, I would not call myself fluent because my code isn't always "Pythonic" (e.g. using map/filter vs. list comprehensions), and I'm not too intimate with some aspects of the language and standard library yet (e.g. the introspection API, etc.). Is there a word or phrase I can use on e.g. a resume to describe what I know? I can think of "very familiar with", but is there a better word/phrase I can use?

  I built a social android application in which users can see other users around them by gps location. at the beginning thing went well as i had low number of users, But now that I have increasing number of users (about 1500 +100 every day) I revealed a major problem in my design. In my Google App Engine servlet I have static HashMap that holding all the users profiles objects, currenty 1500 and this number will increase as more users register. Why I'm doing it Every user that requesting for the users around him compares his gps with other users and check if they are in his 10km radius, this happens every 5 min on average. That is why I can't get the users from db every time because GAE read/write operation quota will tare me apart. The problem with this desgin is As the number of users increased the Hashmap turns to null every 4-6 hours, I thing that this time is getting shorten but I'm not sure. I'm fixing this by reloading the users from the db every time I detect that it became null, But this causes DOS to my users for 30 sec, So I'm looking for better solution. I'm guessing that it happens because the size of the hashmap, Am I right? I have been advised to use spatial database, but that mean that I can't work with GAE any more and that mean that I need to build my big server all over again and lose my existing DB. Is there something I can do with the existing tools? Thanks.

• How should I host our scalable worker processes?

  We are designing a new architecture for an enterprise business. The principles we've followed so far is not to develop what you can (possible buy and) deploy, ie, don't reinvent any wheels. In this way we've decided on CQRS, RabbitMQ, Riak and a bunch of other things. We still need to write /some/ business code though and these will be in the form of worker processes, which will consume commands from a message queue and after any side-effects, produce events onto another message queue. The idea behind this is that via the competing-consumers design we will have a scalable design right out of the box. One option is of writing a management infrastructure that will know how to: deploy code instantiate processes kill processes update configuration etc IE provide fault tolerance and scalability. Also, this is exactly what something like GAE and Heroku does for you, but in a public setting and in our organization, public is bad. My question is, is there an out-of-the-box solution that we can use to host our consumers in? Like a private cloud or private platform-as-a-service. Private Heroku or GAE. Is there some kind of software or software product with which we can do all of these things and thereby get scalability and fault tolerance over our consumers?

• Suspend not working after kernel update on an HP Envy14 1050

  I just update ubuntu 12.04 to the kernel 3.2.0-30 and together with it a lot of packeges in the system. I am running it on an HP Envy14 1050. When I first made a fresh install of the clean ubuntu 12.04 I had the problem that when restoring from suspend the screen was black, although some backlight was there. I could fix it following this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674/comments/20. Now, after the update the black screen after suspend has reappeared but with no backlight at all and the led in the caps lock key blinking. The laptop is using a ATI radeon 5600 with the privative drivers. During the update process there was an error with depmod . You can see the /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log file at the end. UPDATE: suspend is not working at all. The problem is not when restoring from suspend, but when I try to suspend the system it gets blocked and the fan running. Only option is to press power button.   Before you say it: yes, this "question" has been asked other times. However, I could not fine many of such questions and not that easily, and those I found had similar results. What I'm trying to say that there are no comprehensive lists of well written Open Source projects, so I decided to set some requirements for the entries (one or possibly more): Idiomatic use of the language in which they are written The project should be lightweight. Not as in "a few kbs", as in "clean" and possibly following the UNIX philosophy, making an efficient use of resources and performing its duty and nothing more. No code bloat, most importantly. Projects like Firefox and GNOME wouldn't qualify, for example. Minimal reliance on external, non-standard libraries, with exceptions for some common FOSS libraries (curses, Xlib, OpenGL and possibly "usual suspects" like gtk+, webkit and Boost). Reliance on well-written libraries is welcome. No reliance on proprietary software - for obvious reasons (programs that rely on XNA, DirectX, Cocoa and similar, for example). Well-documented code is welcome. Include link to web interfaces to their repositories if possible. Here are some sample projects that often pop up in these threads: Operating Systems Plan 9 from Bell Labs: More or less, the official "sequel" to UNIX. Written in C by the same people who invented C! NetBSD: The most portable BSD implementation, written in C and also a good example of portable and organized code. Network and Databases Sqlite: Extremely lightweight and extremely efficient, one of the best pieces of C software I've seen. Count the lines yourself! Lighttpd: A small but pretty reliable web server written in C. Programming languages and VMs Lua: extremely lightweight multi-paradigm programming language. Written in C. Tiny C Compiler: Really tiny C compiler. Not really comparable to GCC or Clang but does its job. PyPy: A Python implementation written in Python. Pharo: OK, I admit it, I'm not really a Smalltalk expert but Pharo is a fork of Squeak and looked rather interesting. Stackless Python - An implementation of Python that doesn't rely on the C call stack - written in C (with some parts in Python) Games and 3D: Angband: One of the most accessible roguelike codebases around here, written in C. Ogre3D: Cross-platform 3D engine. Gets bloated if you don't skip the platform-specific implementation code, otherwise is a pretty solid example of good C++ OO. Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection: Title says it all. Other - dwm: Lightweight window manager. Written in C. Emulation and Reverse Engineering - Bochs: x86 emulator, written in C++ and tiny enough. - MAME: If you want to see C at one of its lowest levels, MAME is for you. May not be as clean as the other projects but it can teach you A LOT. Before you ask: I didn't mention Linux because it has become quite bloated in the last few years, Linus has also confirmed it. • Incomplete upgrade 12.04 to 12.10

  Everything was running smoothly. Everything had been downloaded from Internet, packages had been installed and a prompt asked for some obsolete programs/files to be removed or kept. After that the computer crashed and and to manually force a shutdown. I turned it on again and surprise I was on 12.10! Still the upgrade was not finished! How can I properly finish that upgrade?
