Requirements: accessible to normal users accessible to root always loaded, not only for bash (gnome-terminal does not start a bash by default) to work on Ubuntu, Debian and optionally Red Hat great if addition could be easily scripted So far here is the no-list: /etc/profile.d/java.sh - not executed if you start a new console from gnome-terminal /etc/profile - same as above ~/.profile - current user only, also any solution assuming ~ would not be acceptable because home directory could be on NIS, and JAVA_HOME could be different.

  hostname -f says "hostname: the specified hostname is invalid". The hostname (FQDN) specified in /etc/hostname is also listed in /etc/hosts and is pingable. No actual DNS server yet of the host knows. Is this a reason of the error reported or something else? (the OS is Ubuntu 10.04 Server). Update: registering the host at a DNS server (so that the name can be successfully resolved via Internet) did not help.

• Package problems after upgrade

  I installed a new upgrade on ubuntu which seemed to fail near the end. Now I'm being told that an error has occurred and to please run apt-get to see what's wrong. After some further tries with that I eventually gave up. It seems there's a left over latex package(?) somewhere and I can't seem to get rid of or fix it. • How can I download a package and all of its dependencies with apt-get

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and I would like to use apt-get to download a package and all of it's depenedcies. Those packages will have to be installed on computers with no internet connection, so in addition to the base package I also need to all of the package's dependcies as well. Is there an easy way to do this (like in muon package manager)? I now that I can use the apt-get download command for this, but I don't want to manually specify each package that muon recommends to install or upgrade.

  Getting a kernel panic with this error on my XEN VPS's. (all on 8.04 LTS) The kernel version on my Dom-0 is 2.6.24-25-xen and the kernel version on the Xen VPS is also 2.6.24-25-xen. I read something about disabling APIC from here http://muffinresearch.co.uk/archives/2008/08/20/ubuntu-bug-soft-lockup-cpu0-stuck-for-11s/ but that doesn't seem to help as well. Anyone experienced this and are there any workarounds? Thanks in advance!

  The default output audio port Ubuntu doesn't work on my system. It should be "Analog Mono Output/Amplifier", instead of "Analog Output/Amplifier". I can easily change that in sound preferences, just by choosing the right port in the "Output" tab. The problem is this would only apply to a single account, and I would like to change it system-wide, so it applies to all accounts on the system (I have more than 100 users...).   I can connect to other computers on my home network (ubuntu + OSX machines) using the IP address, but I can't connect using the netbios name. On the mac the name appears in Finder but if I try to connect (goconnect to server smb://[email protected]) it doesn't work, while smb://[email protected] does. Same with ssh, ping and afp between the macs. This is a intermittent problem. It has worked in the past.

  How can I find out the size of a file? I opened with an application written in C. I would like to know the size, because I want to put the content of the loaded file into a string, which I alloc using malloc(). Just writing malloc(10000*sizeof(char)); is IMHO a bad idea.
