  • How do I add a VMware ESXi Host to Microsoft Virtual Machine Manager?

    I am trying to manage virtual machines running on a VMware ESXi host using Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager. I was able to add the ESXi machine using the "Add VMware VirtualCenter server" option, but can't access any of the VMs on the datastore associated with this ESXi server. The datastore of the ESXi box is showing up with the correct name, but it won't let me see any of the VMs that have already been created; I get "There are no virtual machines on this host." Because I couldn't get any of the existing virtual machines to show up, I tried creating some new ones. When using VMM to connect to ESXi and create new VMs, I get the following error messages in the "rating explanation" section: The virtualization software on the selected host does not support virtual hard disks on an IDE bus. and The virtualization software on the host XXXXXX does not support the creation of dynamic virtual hard disk. Any ideas on why I can't manage existing machines and why I can't create new ones? The existing machines were created in vSphere. I should note that the ESXi server and the server running SCVMM are both on the same domain. I should also note that although the ESXi box has been added as a VirtualCetner server, when I try to add it through the "Add Host" option, I get an error message saying "Virtual Machine Manager cannot complete the VirtualCenter action on server EXSi because of the following error: The operation is not supported on the object."

  • VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5 with Intel SPL 5000 in Raid 0 no boot from DVD?

    I hope this is the correct StackExchange, since I am only using StackOverflow for Web development, but need some help with my server configuration. I would like to install VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5 on my server here at home and run a view machines on it such as Windows Server 2008 and Red Hat. I used to have either OpenSuse or Windows Server 2008 installed but I would like to get into VMWare Hypervisor. My hardware configuration: - Intel S5000PSL with bios version S5000.86B.10.60.0091 build date 10/09/2008 as of read out of bios - E5420 @ 2.5GHz Intel Xeon CPU The Intel Virtualization Technology is enabled in the BIOS - DVD DH20A4P DVD Writer - 8GB ECC Ram I have configured a RAID 0 on my 2 WD 2TB SATA drives I have burned the Hypervisor 5 on an empty DVD and it is bootable, I tested it on my client PC. The main problem here is basically, that I cannot boot the DVD on my server. I have set the Boot Option to the DVD drive. I have booted from the BIOS straight in the DVD drive and it does not work. I do not see any error messages. The only thing I see are the PXE error messages when it tries booting from the network and other devices, obviously without any result. Does anybody know why I cannot boot the DVD? What could cause the problem? I have sucessfully installed Windows Server 2008 via original DVD about 1 year ago, so the DVD drive can read and does work. The DVD drive is available in the BIOS and I have checked all cables and none of them is loose in any way. I even see the light flashing but it does not want to boot from the DVD. I am looking forward to suggestions and things that I should check. Thank you very much

  • Can a folder on a NAS be made available as a physical drive in VMWare?

    We are currently in the process of moving from a single web server to two load balanced web servers and are facing some challenges we don't quite know how to fix. One of these is that the current single server hosts applications that write stuff to disk. The applications running on the server expects that when something is written to disk it later will in fact exist, so it's important that this premise is fulfilled with the dual server architecture as well. The dual server setup is a couple of VMWare instances with Windows Server 2008 R2 as the guest operating system. Out of the box, these instances does not share any kind of file system, so just moving the applications over would make them break since one instance would write something to the file system that doesn't exist on the other. Thus we need to share a file system between the two virtual servers. Our host has proposed to create a network share on a SAN and map this share individually on each virtual machine. This doesn't work too well due to NTFS permissions, etc., because the share needs to be accessed by several independent web applications that won't even be in the same application pool. The only solution that kind of works is to hard code an "identity" for each web application into its web.config file, but this means password in clear text which doesn't sit well with me. Since the servers are virtual, I'm thinknig: Wouldn't it be possible to make a NAS area available as a physical disk in the gues operating system somehow? Since VMWare has full control of the virtual hardware, you'd think it would be able to "fake" a local hard drive in the virtual machine that in reality is a folder on a NAS, but so far I haven't found anything that states how and if this is possible. So I have to ask the wonderful Server Fault community: Can a folder on a NAS be made available as a physical drive (typical D:) in both of the virtual machines?

  • Performance of ClearCase servers on VMs?

    Where I work, we are in need of upgrading our ClearCase servers and it's been proposed that we move them into a new (yet-to-be-deployed) VMmare system. In the past I've not noticed a significant problem with performance with most applications when running in VMs, but given that ClearCase "speed" (i.e. dynamic-view response times) is so latency sensitive I am concerned that this will not be a good idea. VMWare has numerous white-papers detailing performance related issues based on network traffic patterns that re-inforces my hypothesis, but nothing particularly concrete for this particular use case that I can see. What I can find are various forum posts online, but which are somewhat dated, e.g.: ClearCase clients are supported on VMWare, but not for performance issues. I would never put a production server on VM. It will work but will be slower. The more complex the slower it gets. accessing or building from a local snapshot view will be the fastest, building in a remote VM stored dynamic view using clearmake will be painful..... VMWare is best used for test environments (via http://www.cmcrossroads.com/forums?func=view&catid=31&id=44094&limit=10&start=10) and: VMware + ClearCase = works but SLUGGISH!!!!!! (windows)(not for production environment) My company tried to mandate that all new apps or app upgrades needed to be on/moved VMware instances. The VMware instance could not handle the demands of ClearCase. (come to find out that I was sharing a box with a database server) Will you know what else would be on that box besides ClearCase?     I am trying to share a folder between Lubuntu 13.04 (in VMware player) and Windows 7 64 bit. I followed a tutorial till step 16. I typed a command and saw nothing. I also went into the /mnt/hgfs folder and saw nothing there.   • Antec Fusion Black LCD won't turn off on system shutdown

    Hi! I've been struggling a while with getting the iMON LCD/IR-receiver on my Antec Fusion Black case to shutdown together with the system (XBMC Live 10 - ubuntu based). But it won't. When it's turned off the LCD still lights up the whole room. Many have proposed the "solution" of setting the machine into hibernation instead but that however won't work for me, since I'm unable to suspend my system. It is the LCD/IR-module that prevents me from suspending and I haven't found a solution to properly unload it on suspending (it's way above my linux knowledge). I need help with getting the display to turn off the backlight when the system is turned off. Can anyone please help me? If anyone also has the knowledge on how to get the eject function to work on my Antec Veris rm200 remote I would be very grateful, I was told about that it could get fixed with irexec but I do not know how since I haven't been able to find a good tutorial on the subject.   • How do I fix VMware “Unidentified Networks” in Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1?

    I have recently installed VMware Workstation 7 onto Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1 and both VMnet1 and VMnet8 appeared as "Unidentified Networks". I have tried editing HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, a tip provided by Mathews (Jul 23, 2009) but both virtual NICs still appeared as "Unidentified Networks". I will need both NICs to be listed as "Work" or "Private" and with Internet Access. What other solutions/workarounds? Thanks!

I can ask our admin to set up something in the admin area but I do not have access for myself.   • Can you set up a gaming LAN using OpenVPN installed in a VMware guest OS and be playing the game on the host OS?

    I would like to setup a gaming VPN. Ie. I have some games that work over LAN and would like to play them with people that are not on my LAN. I know I can do this with OpenVPN. My ultimate goal would be to run OpenVPN portably on my host OS and not even need any virtualization. As such i don't want to install it on my host, but i'm fine with running it portably. I'm even fine with temporarily adding registry keys, and then running a .reg file to remove these entries once i'm done. To this effect i have installed OpenVPN on a virtual machine and diffed the registry. I then manually (using a .reg file) added all the keys that seem important on my host OS and copied the installation folder of OpenVPN onto my host machine. Then i try to run openVPN GUI 1.0.3 as a test and it says "Error opening registy for reading (HKLM\SOFTWARE\OpenVPN). OpenVPN is probably not installed". I verified that that key is indeed in the registry with all subkeys and it looks correct. I have tried running the GUI as an administrator and in compatibility mode with no success. I am running Windows 7. If this fails then i would be happy with installing OpenVPN on a virtual machine in VMWare but they key is that i will be running the game installed on my host machine. The first question for this option is if this is even possible. The second is, that I can't get the VM to have internet access if I use bridging but i can if i use NAT. Is it possible to do this game VPN setup with VMWare guest OS running using NAT?   • How can I copy a Virtual Machine on VMWare ESXi 4 while maintaining Thin Provisioning?

    We have an ESXi host we use for testing, which results in a ton of VMs being created and copied on a regular basis. We don't have the storage capacity to use thick provisioned VMs on this server, and have been maintaining the copies using VMWare Converter. But using the converter is an incredibly slow operation which copies the entire contents of the VM over the network several times before actually finishing the copy. Is there a way to simply clone the VM but maintain the thin-provisioning?

  • Is it possible to dedicate the physical screen of a vmware server machine to a guest vm graphically?

    I have a vmware server 2.x running on ubuntu server (8.04). So the graphics card and the screen of the physical box are unused (I log in remotely and the host os has only the cli console installed). I wonder if it is possible to assign this graphics card to a virtual machine directly and use it for the gui of this guest? Or maybe if I add a second graphics card to the machine?

    IT is running a series of VMs that we'd like to see optimized further: if the VMs' are Windows XP, storing their NTFS images out to the virtual disk (ext3) provided by Linux/VMWare, how much of a hit are we taking - as opposed to having a partition of the host hard drive formatted NTFS to eliminate the translation layer and the extra level of operating system IO preparation?

    I'm trying to install VMware-vSphere-CLI-5.0.0-422456.x86_64 onto CentOS 6.0 64bit, but the installer complains: CPAN not able to install following Perl modules on the system. These must be installed manually for use by vSphere CLI: UUID 0.03 or newer I tried to do sudo yum install uuid-perl and also sudo yum install perl-SOAP-Lite perl-Data-Dump perl-Class-MethodMaker perl-Crypt-SSLeay perl-libxml-perl perl-XML-LibXML-Common but this doesn't help. What else can I try to do?
