• Why is my substitution control suddenly not working in ASP.NET 4.0?

  I just upgraded my site from ASP.NET 3.5 to 4.0. I've been working through some breaking changes (there were more than I expected). One I can't figure out, however, is why my <asp:Substitution /> control suddenly stopped working like it should. It's supposed to ignore the output cache settings of the parent page and update upon every request. For some reason that isn't happening. It's caching for the full 10 minutes (the OutputCache setting for my home page). Any ideas?

  Hey guys, I want to implement a class which can be used by two classes of my project. One is manipulating 'NewsRecord' objects. One is manipulating 'GalleriesRecord' objects. In another class, I may use one of the two objects so i do something like that : // header class id myNewsRecordOrGalleriesRecord; // class.m // NewsRecord and GalleriesRecord have both the title property NSLog(myNewsRecordOrGalleriesRecord.title); and i get : error : request for member 'title' in something not a structure or union any ideas :D ? • curl multiple requests cookie issue

  I'm using curl multi API for multiple curl requests. first I'm using a single request to login to a site and save the cookie file. then I'm using the curl multi API to get some data from that site. The problem I'm facing is that from some reason the cookie file does not get read and I'm redirecting to the main login page. I must say that this work once in awhile so I can't point what went wrong. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

• Requested URL is changing

  Hi, I have a website, at localhost:82 when I type this into IE, it comes up with a 404 error and the requested URL is localhost:80/wwwroot, which is not at all what I requested. There is no URL rewrite set up. I have tried to set up a tracing rule to see what is happening, however, the instructions at http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/266/troubleshooting-failed-requests-using-tracing-in-iis-7/ say to look for "Fail Request Tracing" link, but it doesn't exist in my IIS 7.0 even under administrator. Not sure where to look or why this is changing my requested URL. Any help would be appreciated.

• How do I measure the time elapsed when calling a WCF Webservice?

  We want to track the time taken by a web service call between a client and the server. This time should not include the time taken by the server to process the request. The idea is that we want to see how much time of a web service call is lost due to the actual transfer trough the network. Does WCF already offer something in this direction? Of course I could just add a timer on the client and subtract the server processing time but that wouldn't be very elegant.

• Running GUI application in the Windows service mode

  I'm writing a server running as a Windows service that by request invokes Firefox to generate a pdf snapshot of a webpage. I know it is a bad idea to run a GUI program in service mode, but the server nature of my program restricts from running it in the user mode. Running a user-level 'proxy' also is not an option, since there might be no interactive user logged-in on the machine with the server running. In my experiments Firefox successfully produced pdf when the service was running under a user account that was already logged-in. Obviously it didn't work in other cases: for Local System and user accounts that weren't logged-in. Under LocalSystem with 'Allow service to interact with desktop' option enabled I could see the Firefox started that reports that it's unable to find a printer. Since it wouldn't be practical to require an opened user session for the pdf server to run, is there any workaround for this except running the whole thing from a virtual machine?

• Validation errors from Google App Engine Logout link

  I am making a web page using the Google App Engine. I am validating my pages, and found that the logout link that is generated by the call to the users api (in python) users.create_logout_url(request.uri) does not validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict. The href in the anchor tag looks like this: /_ah/login?continue=http%3A//localhost%3A8080/&action=Logout Including a link with this anchor text throws three different validation errors: *general entity "action" not defined and no default entity *reference to entity "action" for which no system identifier could be generated *EntityRef: expecting ';' Here is a dummy page with the anchor tag in it, if you want to try it on w3c validator.Dummy Page. The logout link wont work, but you can see how the page is valid without it, but the actual text inside the href tag breaks the validation. Any thoughts on whats going on? Thank you!

• CInternetSession::OpenURL exception if headers are defined. Works fine if not. Why?

  Trying to log the application version details in our weblogs using the headers: Should be a one liner..but for some reason whenever I specify anything but NULL for the headers it causes an exception (InternetOpenUrl() call returns NULL) - anyone able to explain why? • Ruby class variable is reset after rails app initialized

  I tried to assign a class static variable like this class QueryLogger < Logger @@query_logger_default_instance = nil def self.default_instance # Use global variable because static variable doesn't work @@query_logger_default_instance ||= self.new(STDOUT) end end In initializers folder of my rails app, I added a file with this code block ActiveRecord::Base.logger = QueryLogger.default_instance In a request (action of controller), I make a call to this: QueryLogger.default_instance. My assumption is that the call to default_instance will always report the same. However, it does not. Now I try to watch stuff in NetBeans by setting breakpoint inside default_instance. Thing happen as expected, the default_instance get called twice, one due to the initializer block and one due to the call to my action. Surprising thing is, in both times, @@query_logger_default_instance report nil inside NetBeans inspector. The first nil report is correct, but the second shocked me. It's look like static variable gets reset after rails app initialized. Is there some magic there?

• Using "CASE" in Where clause to choose various column harm the performance

  I have query which needs to be dynamic on some of the columns, meaning I get a parameter and according its value I decide which column to fetch in my Where clause. I've implemented this request using "CASE" expression: (CASE @isArrivalTime WHEN 1 THEN ArrivalTime ELSE PickedupTime END) >= DATEADD(mi, -@TZOffsetInMins, @sTime) AND (CASE @isArrivalTime WHEN 1 THEN ArrivalTime ELSE PickedupTime END) < DATEADD(mi, -@TZOffsetInMins, @fTime) If @isArrivalTime = 1 then chose ArrivalTime column else chose PickedupTime column. I have a clustered index on ArrivalTime and nonclustered index on PickedupTime. I've noticed that when I'm using this query (with @isArrivalTime = 1), my performance is a lot worse comparing to only using ArrivalTime. Maybe the query optimizer can't use\choose the index properly in this way? I compared the execution plans an noticed that when I'm using the CASE 32% of the time is being wasted on the index scan, but when I didn't use the CASE(just usedArrivalTime`) only 3% were wasted on this index scan. Anyone know the reason for this?

  I have an ASP.NET web site hosted at HostMySite.com and they recently changed the shared accounts to run in medium trust. In my web site I query my Blogger account and get blog posts to display on my web site. I am using Google.GData.Client v1.4.0.2 The retrieval works locally (and worked until medium trust was invoked at the ISP). • Wrong SQLServer syntax: need help!

  Hi, this is what I want to achieve: 4 tables are involved: Players with PlayerID as PK, Competitions with CompetID as PK Results with ResultID as PK and CompetID as FK And the 4th table: PlayerResultts with ResultID + PlayerID as PK and CompetID as new column I created. Competitions, results and PlayerResults are already populated and quite large (300000 PlayerResults so far). In order to populate the PlayerResults.CompetID column, I try a Update ... (Select....) request but I'm not aware of the right syntax and it fails. Here is my feeble attempt: update PlayerResults set competid = (select distinct(r.competid) from results r, playerresults p where r.resultID = p.resultid) Error is (of course): "Msg 512, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , , = or when the subquery is used as an expression." Can someone put me in the right direction? TIA

  So if I have NSData from an HTTP request, then I do something like this: NSString *test = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:data encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; This will result in null if the data contains weird unicode data (title is from reddit): {"title":"click..¦¦me..and..then¦¦________ ¦¦check¦¦_.your...¦¦.__...¦¦____ ¦¦....¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦....¦¦____ ¦¦¦¦¦¦....¦¦¦¦¦¦....¦¦¦¦¦¦____ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦____ ....¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦______ ........¦¦..._recently....¦¦________ ....¦¦....viewed....links....¦¦_____"}, How would I convert the data to a string? Ideally, it would best if the string wasn't null so I could parse it as JSON, but even a lossy conversion is fine with me in these cases. • Unicorn: Which number of worker processes to use?

  I am running a Ruby on Rails app on a virtual Linux server that is capped at 1GB RAM. Currently, I am constantly hitting the limit and would like to optimize memory utilization. One option I am looking at is reducing the number of unicorn workers. So what is the best way to determine the number of unicorn workers to use? The current setting is 10 workers, but the maximum number of requests per second I have seen on Google Analytics Real-Time is 3 (only scored once at a peak time; in 99% of the time not going above 1 request per second). So is it a save assumption that I can - for now - go with 4 workers, leaving room for unexpected amounts of requests? What are the metrics I should have a look at for determining the number of workers and what are the tools I can use for that on my Ubuntu machine?

• All site interaction through a single page

  Hi there I have an idea for a site where there would be no refreshing and all interactions take place via AJAX. The page would load with central space, where all interaction would take place. If a user clicked on a link, the page would request it via AJAX and replace the rectangle's content with the link content. The idea is effectively an AJAX implemented iframe. Are there any disadvantages with this approach? Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on the idea?   Hi guys, I have started to work on a site without url rewriting. Now, the request is to use friendly urls so i started to use Intelligencia.UrlRewriter. So no longer return "~/Site/Categorii.aspx?category=m1" but "~/Site/Categorii/m1" without beeing needed to modify its structure? I mean, i have about 30 methods like the one from the above; it would be extremely helpfull if i can be guided to use a regex at the output of the methods iso modifying the url construction... • How to represent datetime of deifferent time zomes in C#

  Hi. I have a .NET WebService (written in C#), that is supposed to serve people around the world. With each request I get the user's datetime in his own time zone with the format : "yyyy/MM/dd HH:mm ZZZZ". I have to convert the string to something representing the original date and time and specifying the time zone in GMT. I have to make some logical calculations and keep it in the database. The regular DateTime doe's not support this. it does not have a property specifying the time zone. When I try to convert my string into DateTime - it simply converts it to my local time. I do not want to keep my time in UTC, because I have some logic that has to run per user by his own time. Does anyone know a C# class that handles this? Thanks!

• Can getAttribute() method of Tomcat ServletContext implementation be called without synchronization?

  I would like to read some parameters during servlet initializtion (in init() method), and store them among servlet context attributes (using getServletContext().setAttribute()). I would like to read these parameters later - during some request processing (using getServletContext().getAttribute()). So, the multiple threads could do this simultaneously. My question is if such an attempt is safe? Could I be sure that multi threaded calls to the getAttribute() don't mess up any internal state of the servlet context? Please take into account that I'm not going to call the setAttribute() anywhere besides the initialization. So, only calls to the getAttribute() are going to be done from multiple threads. But depending on the internal implementation, this also could be dangerous. So, any information about Tomcat's implementation would be appreciated.

  Hi, I am doing performance tweaking of a simple app that uses MVC on IIS 7.5. I have a StopWatch starting up in Application_BeginRequest and I take a snapshot at Controller.OnActionExecuting. So I measure the time spend in the entire IIS pipeline: from request receipt to the moment execution finally gets to my controller. I obtain 700 microseconds on my 3GHz quad-core (project compiled Release x64), and I wonder where the bottleneck is, especially hearing some people say that one can get up to 8000 page loads per second with MVC. How can I optimize MVC and IIS pipeline to obtain higher speed?
