• App cannot start at all in Android 2.2 (Froyo)

  Dear fellow Android developers & Google Engineers, My app has been running okay until the recent Froyo update. After installing the Android 2.2 SDK, I can compile my code without any errors. I placed a breakpoint at the start of the onCreate() method but I discovered it didn't even reach there. • How should I distribute a pre-built perl module, and what version of perl do I build for?

  This is probably a multi-part question. Background: we have a native (c++) library that is part of our application and we have managed to use SWIG to generate a perl wrapper for this library. We'd now like to distribute this perl module as part of our application. My first question - how should I distribute this module? Is there a standard way to package pre-built perl modules? I know there is ppm for the ActiveState distro, but I also need to distribute this for linux systems. I'm not even sure what files are required to distribute, but I'm guessing it's the pm and so files, at a minimum. My next question - it looks like I might need to build my module project for each version of perl that I want to support. How do I know which perl versions I should build for? Are there any standard guidelines... or better yet, a way to build a package that will work with multiple versions of perl? Sorry if my questions make no sense - I'm fairly new to the compiled module aspects of perl. CLARIFICATION: the underlying compiled source is proprietary (closed source), so I can't just ship source code and the appropriate make artifacts for the package. Wish I could, but it's not going to happen in this case. Thus, I need a sane scheme for packaging prebuilt binary files for my module.

• Gzip http compression problem on iis7

  My web hosting provider is running IIS7 and I am having loads of trouble to get gzip compression to work properly. Host admins say compression is installed. I can confirm compression using some online checking services but not with others. PageSpeed Firefox add-on also says the site is uncompressed. I am personally sitting behind a Squid proxy but web.config settings should take care of proxy issue. Below is the relevant web.config snippet. Most of it is borrowed from various sites. • UISearchBar and UINavigationItem

  I can't seem to get a UISearchBar to position itself from the far left to the far right in the navigation bar. In the -(void)viewDidLoad method, I have the following code: `UISearchBar *sb = [[UISearchBar alloc] initWithFrame:self.tableView.tableHeaderView.frame]; sb.delegate = self; self.navigationItem.titleView = sb; [sb sizeToFit]; [sb release];` When you build and run, it looks just fine at first glance. However, looking more closely, you can tell there is a margin/space on the left. This wouldn't be a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but when I tap the search bar to start a search, I animate the cancel button into view. Because the search bar is positioned slightly to the right, the animation is jerky and the cancel button falls off the end like so: link text It seems as if the UINavigationItem is like a table with three cells, where there is a padding on the first and last which I can't remove - nor does there seem to be a way to 'merge' it all together and then place the search bar there. I know this look is possible, because the AppStore search has a search bar in the navigation bar and it goes all the way to the edges. Anyone know how to get the search bar to go all the way to the edges so my slide-in cancel button animation will work properly?

• Using .NET's HttpWebRequest to download a multitude of files in a row

  I have an application that needs to download several files in a row in succession (sometimes a few thousand). However, what ends up happening when several files need to be downloaded is I get an exception with an inner exception of type SocketException and the error code 10048 (WSAEADDRINUSE). I did some digging and basically it's because the server has run out of sockets (and they are all waiting for 240s or so before they become available again) - not coincidentally it starts happening around the 1024 file range. I would expect that the HttpWebRequest/ServicePointManager would be reusing my connection, but apparently it is not (and the files are https, so that may be part of it). I never saw this problem in the C++ code that this was ported from (but that doesn't mean it didn't ever happen - I'd be surprised if it was, though). I am properly closing the WebRequest object and the HttpWebRequest object has KeepAlive set to true by default. Next my intent is to fiddle around with ServicePointManager.SetTcpKeepAlive(). However, I can't see how more people haven't run into this problem. Has anyone else run into the problem, and if so, what did you do to get around it? Currently I have a retry scheme that detects this error and waits it out, but that doesn't seem like the right thing to do. • posting nutch data into a BASIC auth secured Solr instance

The ones using "curl" are easy, but i also have a Nutch crawl that uses the "solrindex" command to push data into Solr. • Why would Basic Auth not work with my WCF client to Java SOAP Web Service?

  I have a Java based web service that requires basic authentication to communicate with it. If I type the WSDL url into my browser I'm prompted for Basic Auth. Which I can get by entering the correct credentials. However using my WCF client doesn't work. • Open source GIS tools

  Hi I’ve been looking at Open Source GIS tools. In particular MapServer and GeoServer. The problem I’m seeing is that to actually deploy these to the public you can’t use a regular $5/ month (or free) hosting service because you have to install these services on the server in ways that are not accessible in the average hosting scheme. So you either have to use a host that has MapServer installed (many of which look unreliable) or have a dedicated server or VPS. All of these options have a significant cost barrier ($30 - $200/month). I’m just doing this for fun. Are there any free or inexpensive ways to have your GIS services hosted? Or are there any products that install in a way that you don’t need to access the root structure of the server? I have tried OpenLayers and GeoExt but I don’t think a client side option will work for me because of the size of the datasets I am using. My base data will be vector data not WMS data (or something similar). I haven’t tried Google maps yet, but I will be looking into it. Also, any thought on using SVG for GIS purposes? Thanks

  Hi all, My problem: First of hopefully this is not a duplicate, but I could not find the right answer(right away). I would like to validate that an URI(http) is valid in Java. I came up with the following tests but I can't get them to pass. First I used getPort(), but then http://www.google.nl will return -1 on getPort().   Hi, I am trying to connect to a web service served by SAP and i have authentication problem. I simply added the service by right clicking project, selecting add service reference, giving WSDL url for the service and clicking OK.(After clicking ok asked for credentials and i provided them) Then when i tried to call a method from the serviceclien object i got the error message below: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Anonymous'. • What is the worst programming language you ever worked with? [closed]

While there is a lot of discussion about the best one, I'd like to hear your stories about the worst programming languages you ever worked with and I'd like to know exactly what annoyed you. • Can not call web service with basic authentication using WCF

  I've been given a web service written in Java that I'm not able to make any changes to. It requires the user authenticate with basic authentication to access any of the methods. The suggested way to interact with this service in .NET is by using Visual Studio 2005 with WSE 3.0 installed. This is an issue, since the project is already using Visual Studio 2008 (targeting .NET 2.0). I could do it in VS2005, however I do not want to tie the project to VS2005 or do it by creating an assembly in VS2005 and including that in the VS2008 solution (which basically ties the project to 2005 anyway for any future changes to the assembly). I think that either of these options would make things complicated for new developers by forcing them to install WSE 3.0 and keep the project from being able to use 2008 and features in .NET 3.5 in the future... ie, I truly believe using WCF is the way to go. I've been looking into using WCF for this, however I'm unsure how to get the WCF service to understand that it needs to send the authentication headers along with each request. I'm getting 401 errors when I attempt to do anything with the web service. This is what my code looks like: WebHttpBinding webBinding = new WebHttpBinding(); ChannelFactory<MyService> factory = new ChannelFactory<MyService>(webBinding, new EndpointAddress( "http://127.0.0.1:80/Service/Service/")); factory.Endpoint.Behaviors.Add(new WebHttpBehavior()); factory.Credentials.UserName.UserName = "username"; factory.Credentials.UserName.Password = "password"; MyService proxy = factory.CreateChannel(); proxy.postSubmission(_postSubmission); This will run and throw the following exception: "The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Anonymous'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Basic realm=realm'." And this has an inner exception of: "The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized." Any thoughts about what might be causing this issue would be greatly appreciated.

• using wget against protected site with NTLM

  Trying to mirror a local intranet site and have found previous questions using 'wget'. It works great with sites that are anonymous, but I have not been able to use it against a site that is expecting username\password (IIS with Integrated Windows Authentication). • XML Schema Migration

  I am working on a project where we need to save data in an XML format. The problem is, over time we expect the format / schema for our data to change. What we want to be able to do is to produce scripts to migrate our data across different schema versions. We distribute our product to thousands of customers so we need to be able to run / apply these scripts at customer sites (so we can't just do the conversions by hand). I think that what we are looking for is some kind of XML data migration tool. In my mind the ideal tool could: Do an "XML diff" of two schema to identify added/deleted/changed nodes. Allow us to specify transformation functions. So, for example, we might add a new element to our schema that is a function of the old elements. (E.g. a new element C where C = A+B, A + B are old elements). So I think I am looking for a kind of XML diff and patch tool which can also apply transformation functions. One tool I am looking at for this is Altova's MapForce . I'm sure others here have had to deal with XML data format migration. How did you handle it? Edit: One point of clarification. The "diff" I plan to do is on the schema or .xsd files. The actual changes will be made to particular data sets that follow a given schema. These data sets will be .xml files. So its a "diff" of the schema to help figure out what changes need to be made to data sets to migrate them from one scheme to another.

• WCF Http Bindings, Require SSL

  I have the following binding I'm using with my wsHttpBinding webservice. <binding name="wsHttpConfig"> <security> <transport clientCredentialType="None"/> </security> </binding> The issue is that it allows for the client to connect using either Http or Https. I would like to require them to use SSL. I tried adding the following: <system.web.extensions> <scripting> <webServices> <authenticationService enabled="true" requireSSL = "true"/> </webServices> </scripting> </system.web.extensions> But it had no effect; client could still connect with Http. I then tried checking the "Require SSL" in the IIS7 SSL Settings and had client certificates radio set to Accept. Now, when I try to view the service I am getting the error "Could not find a base address that matches scheme http for the endpoint with binding WSHttpBinding. Registered base address schemes are [https]." Anyone know exactly how to fix this error? I have been googling for the last 3 hours trying 500 different combinations (not 500, but too many to list) and could not get anything to run.

• Graphviz or Dynagraph for Graph-manipulation Program?

  I'm looking into writing a program that will show a graph to the user. The graph will change over time (the user should be able to right-click on a graph item and ask for more detail, which will pop out new bits of the graph), and the user might be able to drag parts of the graph around. I would ideally also like to be able to specify the relative layout of certain parts of the graph myself while leaving the overall layout up to a library, but that's not essential. I'm trying to decide on a graph layout library to use. As far as I can tell, the two leading candidates are Graphviz and Dynagraph. The Dynagraph website suggests that Graphviz is for drawing static graphs, and that Dynagraph was forked from Graphviz and contains algorithms for graphs that will be updated. It has a sample program called Dynasty that does exactly what I want. However, the Graphviz site contains an example program called Lefty which seems to do exactly what I want. Graphviz also seems to be much more widely used, judging by Google (and SO) results. Finally, I'd like to code the GUI part in a language like Python or Scheme, which makes me a bit hesitant to use C++ because I understand it's harder to interface that to interpreters. So my question is, which library is better for what I'm trying to do? Do they both have strong and weak points? Has one of them actually ceased development and is just leaving its website up to confuse me? (I've seen http://stackoverflow.com/questions/464000/simple-dynamic-graph-display-for-c and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2376987/open-source-libraries-to-design-directed-graphs, but I can't tell whether they're right about the Graphviz or Dynagraph choice because of Lefty and also the language issue.)

• OpenStreetMap Proximity search using mySQL

  Hi, I'm just playing around with a dataset of my region generated by JOSM. I moved it into a mySQL DB with the 0.6 API scheme using Osmosis and now I'm desperately trying the following: I want to get all streets of a city. AFAIK there is no tag/relation in the OSM data to determine this so I tried it using a proximity search to get all nodes in a radius around a node representing the city center. Most of the time I looked at the approaches here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/574691/mysql-great-circle-distance-haversine-formula What I got is the following SQL code that should get me the closest 100 nodes around the node with id 36187002 and within a radius of 10km. set @nodeid = 36187002; set @dist = 10; select longitude, latitude into @mylon, @mylat from nodes where id=@nodeid limit 1; SELECT id, ( 6371 * acos( cos( radians(@mylon) ) * cos( radians( latitude ) ) * cos( radians( longitude ) - radians(@mylat) ) + sin( radians(@mylon) ) * sin( radians( latitude ) ) ) ) AS distance FROM nodes HAVING distance < @dist ORDER BY distance LIMIT 0 , 100; Well.. it doesn't work. :( I guess the main problem is that OSM lats/lons are multiplied by 10.000.000 and I don't know how I can correct this function to make it work. • Using Mapping Models to migrate between Core Data Object Models

  I have a fairly simply scheme. Essentially, Run <-- Data (where a Run holds a data, e.g., Temperature, sampled from some sort of sensor). Now, it seems that sensors can have more than one measurement (e.g., Temperature and Humidity). So, a single Run could have multiple data samples. Hence, Run <-- Sample and Sample <-- Data. (And for simplicity I am leaving Run <-- Data in place, for now.) If I create a new mapping model, then things generally work - except that no new Samples are created, no relationships are established between Runs and Samples nor between Samples and Datas. I am trying to get mapping model to migrate my model but even the slightest change to the generated mapping model results in Cocoa error 134110. For example, if I take the "Sample" mapping (which has no Source) and set its Source to 'Run' (so that I can set Sample's inverse relationship 'run' appropriately) then the mapping changes its name to "RunToSample". There are two relationships handled in this mapping: data and run. The data property gets set automatically to FUNCTION($manager, "destinationInstancesForEntityMappingNamed:sourceInstances:" , "DataToData", $source.dataSet) Following this example, I set the run property to FUNCTION($manager, "destinationInstancesForEntityMappingNamed:sourceInstances:" , "RunToRun", $source) Similarly, I set the 'sample' property mapping in RunToRun to FUNCTION($manager, "destinationInstancesForEntityMappingNamed:sourceInstances:" , "RunToSample", $source) and the 'sample' property in DataToData to FUNCTION($manager, "destinationInstancesForEntityMappingNamed:sourceInstances:" , "RunToSample", $source.run) So, what, I wonder, is going wrong? I have tried various permutations, such as leaving the 'inverse' relationships unspecified. But I continue to get the same error (134110) regardless. I imagine that this is a lot easier than it seems and that I am missing some fundamental but minor piece. I have also tried subclassing NSEntityMigrationPolicy and overriding -createDestinationInstancesForSourceInstance: but these efforts have met with much the same results. • Looking for an elegant appwidget skin solution

  I have an appwidget application and would like to enable users to create skins which can be applied at runtime. My preferred solution is to use apk files with nine patch png images that stretch to fit the ImageView's of widget, however its starting to look like I might have to use another packaging technique (e.g. zip files). What I've tried: Importing nine patch resources as Drawable with context.getResourcesForApplication(my.app).getResources..., converting them to bitmaps using a canvas and setting the bitmap to the RemoteView using setImageViewBitap. This didn't work because I needed to specify the size of the resulting view (myBitmap.setBounds(..,..)) during conversion and some of the widths/heights in my appwidget aren't fixed. Perhaps there is a way to get the heights etc that I missed. Importing resources directly to the RemoteView using setImageViewUri() This doesn't work because the function doesn't seem to read android.resource:// Uri's anymore (I poked around in the ImageView source and it only seems to read files paths and content:// Uri's) Importing resources directly to the RemoteView using setImageViewResource() which didn't work because the id retrieved from the external package obviously doesn't include a package reference. What I'm trying to avoid is hard coding all my appwidget width's and height's, or using a separate packaging scheme. Has anyone implemented appwidget skins nicely and want to share the knowledge? Alternately there might be a hole in my logic somewhere that can be pointed out. I can provide code if required though I don't have any here right now.
