• What is the best way to properly test object equality against an array of objects?

  My objective is to abort the NSXMLParser when I parse an item that already exists in cache. The basic flow of the program works like this: 1) Program starts and downloads an XML feed. Each item in the feed is represented by a custom object (FeedItem). Each FeedItem gets added to an array. 2) When the parsing is complete the contents of the array (all FeedItem objects) are archived to the disk. The next time the program is executed or the feed is refreshed by the user I begin parsing again; however, since a cache (array) now exists as each item is parsed I want to see if the object exists in the cache. If it does then I know I have downloaded all the new items and no longer need to continue parsing. What I am learning, I think, is that I can't use indexOfObject or indexOfObjectIDenticalTo: because these really seem to be checking to see that the objects are using the same memory address (thus identical). What I want to do is see if the contents of the object are equal (or at least some of the contents). I've done some research and found that I can override the IsEqual method; however, I really don't want to iterate/enumerate through the entire cache contents table for every newly parsed XML FeedItem. Is iterating through the collection and testing each one for equality the only way to do this or is there a better technique I am not aware of? • Plugin-like architecture in .NET

  I'm trying to implement a plug-in like application. I know there are already several solution out there but this is just going to be proof of the concept, nothing more. The idea would be to make the application main application almost featureless by default and then let the plugins know about each other, having them have implement all the needed features. A couple of issues arise: I want the plugins at runtime to know about each other through my application. That wouldn't mean that at code-time they couldn't reference other plugin's assemblies so they could use its interfaces, only that plugin-feature initialization should be always through my main app. For example: if I have both plugins X and Y loaded and Y wants to use X's features, it should "register" its interest though my application to use its features. I'd have to have a kind of "dictionary" in my application where I store all the loaded plugins. After registering for interest in my application, plugin Y would get a reference to X so it could use it. Is this a good approach? When coding plugin Y that uses X, I'd need to reference X's assembly, so I can program against its interface. That has the issue of versioning. What if I code my plugin Y against an outdated version of plugin X? Should I always use a "central" place where all assemblies are, having there always the up to date versions of the assemblies? Are there by chance any books out there that specifically deal with these kinds of designs for .NET? Thanks

• Optimizing landing pages

  In my current project (Rails 2.3) we have a collection of 1.2 million keywords, and each of them is associated with a landing page, which is effectively a search results page for a given keywords. Each of those pages is pretty complicated, so it can take a long time to generate (up to 2 seconds with a moderate load, even longer during traffic spikes, with current hardware). The problem is that 99.9% of visits to those pages are new visits (via search engines), so it doesn't help a lot to cache it on the first visit: it will still be slow for that visit, and the next visit could be in several weeks. I'd really like to make those pages faster, but I don't have too many ideas on how to do it. A couple of things that come to mind: build a cache for all keywords beforehand (with a very long TTL, a month or so). However, building and maintaing this cache can be a real pain, and the search results on the page might be outdated, or even no longer accessible; given the volatile nature of this data, don't try to cache anything at all, and just try to scale out to keep up with traffic. I'd really appreciate any feedback on this problem.

• How can I get sessions to work if I'm using Google App Engine + Django 1.1?

  Is there a way for me to get sessions working? I know Django has built in session management, and GAE has some tools for it if you're using their watered down version of Django 0.96, but is there a way to get sessions to work if you're trying to use GAE w/ Django 1.1 (i.e. use_library() call). I assume using a db-backed session doesn't work, and a file system backed one won't work b/c we don't have access to the filesystem if we deploy to the Google production servers. This kinda worked (as in didn't crap out) when I used SessionMiddleware backed by a local-memory backed cache and a non-persistent cache (i.e. setting SESSION_ENGINE to django.contrib.sessions.backends.cache). But the session never seems to persist in this case, no matter how I set the timeouts. A new session key is generated on every page reload. Maybe this is b/c the GAE assumes complete statelessness with each request and blows away my local cache? Apologies in advance, I'm pretty new to Python. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• Microphone not capturing sound on 12.04 Lenovo G580

  In both Skype and the Sound Recorder application, I am not capturing any audio from my built-in microphone. I'm not sure why. Otherwise, sound output is working well. I have tried running gstreamer-properties and setting the Default Input plugin to PulseAUdio as well (to match the output), and it didn't help. I have tried running alsamixer -V all and I only get 2 input-related entries: Capture(L R) which is on 100 and not muted (can't be either), and Analog Mic Boost which is on 20db. Extra info: Camera (video) is working well on Skype and Kamerka. • Cannot redeclare class error when generating PHPUnit code coverage report

  Starting a project with Zend Framework 1.10 and Doctrine 2 (Beta1). I am using namespaces in my own library code. When generating code coverage reports I get a Fatal Error about Redeclaring a class. To provide more info, I've commented out the xdebug_disable() call in my phpunit executable so you can see the function trace (disabled local variables output because there was too much output). I'm not sure why it is specific to this class, my entire library is autoloaded so their isn't any include/require calls anywhere. I guess it should be noted that HelperBroker is the first file in the filesystem stemming out from library/Cob I am on Snow Leopard with the latest/recent versions of all software (Zend Server, Zend Framework, Doctrine 2 Beta1, Phing, PHPUnit, PEAR).

• Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

  I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset. • Unable to install Xdebug

  I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up?   I'm trying to perform what I understand to be a relatively simple task. I'd like to remove the extensions from the URLs on my website. I have the proper set up in my application to handle and rewrite the URLs - the trouble is I can't get past IIS to actually get to my application without the extensions. The details: I'm running IIS6 on Windows Server 2003. I've gone into the web site for my application, gone to the home directory tab, clicked "Configuration" and added a wildcard map to the following file: c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll Which I verified is the same as what is used above in the application extensions portion by .ascx, etc. If I navigate to http://mywebsite.com/Blogs the result is as follows: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found Content-Length: 1635 Content-Type: text/html Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Date: Thu, 14 Jan 2010 15:04:49 GMT Which seems to be a standard IIS 404 message. If I navigate to http://mywebsite.com/Blogs.aspx I get my ASP.NET app.... How can I troubleshoot this? I feel like I've double checked everything a dozen times but to no avail. I must be missing something obvious.   I'm a self taught back end engineer so I'm learning all of this stuff as I go along. For the longest time, I've been using basic authentication for my users. Many developers are advising against this approach since each request will contain the username & password in clear text. Anyone with the right skills can sniff on the connection between my iOS application and my Django/Gunicorn Server and obtain their password. I wouldn't want to put my user's credentials at risk so I would like to implement a more secure way of authentication. SSL seems to be the most viable option. My server doesn't serve any static content or anything crazy of that sort. All the server does is send and receive "json" responses from and to my iOS application. Here is my current topology. iOS application ------ Amazon Elastic Load Balancer ------- EC2 Instances running HTTP Gunicorn. Gunicorn runs on port 8000. I have a CNAME record from GoDaddy for the Amazon Elastic Load Balancer DNS. So instead of using the long DNS to make requests, I just use server.example.com. To interact with my servers I send and receive requests to server.example.com:8000/ This setup works and has been solid. However I need to have a more secure way. I would like to setup SSL between my iOS application and my Elastic Load Balancer. How can I go about doing this? Since I am only sending json responses to my application, do I really need to buy a certificate from a CA or can I create my own? (since browsers will not be interacting with my servers. My servers are only designed to send json responses to my iOS application).

  I have a FoxPro 2.6 (16-bit) application that I've installed on a Win2008 (32-bit) Terminal Server. I then created a Remote App from it. It works fine. The problem is that within this FoxPro application it calls out to a .Net application. I have the proper .Net Framework installed on the server (2.0) and I have run the code access security policy tool (caspol.exe). • SkyDrive broken after upgrade to Windows 8.1: "This location can't be found, please try later"

  Upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Store upgrade path has screwed my SkyDrive. The C:\Users\<user name>\SkyDrive folder is empty (it only has single file desktop.ini). When I open the native (Store) SkyDrive app, I see "This location can't be found, please try later". I'm glad to still have my files alive online in my SkyDrive account. I tried disconneting from / reconnecting to my Microsoft Account with no luck. Anyone has an idea on how to fix this without reinstalling/refreshing Windows 8.1? • 502 Bad Gateway error after failed requests using Passenger

  I've got a staging server running nginx 1.0.5 using Rails 3.1 under Passenger 3.0.9. The problem is that a request sent just after one where there's an application error return 502 Bad Gateway. To test it I've set up a simple controller with an action that just raise a dummy exception. One request will show the Rails error message and the next one will show nginx 502 Bad Gateway error, then it goes back to the Rails application error, etc. While investigating this problem I've found out that load testing the application (which increase the number of application processes) make that issue disapear. That is until the extra processes are shutdown, then it reappear. I've tried setting the passenger_min_instances option, but doing so doesn't change anything and in this case each time an application error happen one instance is killed while after load testing all instances are kept alive. P.S.: Some people on my team told me that they've seen the 502 error even when there's no application error but I've not been able to reproduce that. Update: Just found out how to display the responses status codes using ab and most of them are 502!

  I have a brand new installation of Windows XP (SP1 or older). I installed Norton AntiVirus, Firefox, Putty, and Cygwin. No other software is present. Windows Update finds the following 64 updates: KB905760, KB978262, Internet Explorer 8, KB71961, KB954155, KB968816, KB923561, KB950762, KB949402, KB950974, KB951376, KB951748, KB952004, KB952954, KB955069, KB956572, KB956802, KB956803, KB956844, KB958470, KB958869, KB959426, KB960803, KB960859, KB961501, KB969059, KB970238, KB970238, KB971032, KB971468, KB971657, KB972270, KB973507, KB973815, KB973904, KB974112, KB974318, KB974392, KB975025, KB975560, KB975561, KB975713, .......) When these updates are applied, the system reboots to a black screen with two error messages. The first error message says: lsass.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. The second error message says: services.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. I then proceed to boot into Safe Mode, use System Restore, and everything works fine again until the 64 updates re-appear in Windows Update. I can see two options: disable Auto-Updates or install each of the 64 updates one at a time until finding the troublesome update. Does anyone have any better ideas?

• NGINX: How do I calculate an optimal no. of worker processes and worker connections?

  Our web app is running on a Linode 2048 server at the moment (~ 2048 GB of RAM) The MYSQL database is on another linode of it's own so this server is really only handling NGINX and and the Rails application. The application itself uses about 185976 of memory per instance (RSS). Our traffic is < 1000 per day and the pages are mostly cached so there are fewer hits to the rails app itself. My question is - how can I calculate optimal NGINX config settings for my app?   The objective here is to start a simple .NET application I've written which captures some environment variables (time, username, computername, etc) upon login. This .NET application subscribes to the Windows "User logout" event. Upon launch, the application captures the above variables, and creates a record in my database, upon logout (which I'm capturing) I update another field in the same record, with the logout time. The above is working exactly as I would like, when I launch the binary, it makes its initial log entry, then waits for the logout event and updates the same record. Restrictions, the .NET binary should be able to live on a share point (\server\share\myapp\v1) so I can update the application to (\server\share\myapp\v2) and simply update the GPO/Logon script. My initial thought was to use the \domaincontroller\sysvol\ directory to store the binary and then update all user accounts to include a call to my application. Can you see any flaws in this approach? My question is this: First, is there anything wrong with my idea above? Second, if so, what is the best way (through group policy or otherwise) to ensure this application launches whenever a session is started on a server?

They are receiving the following error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server I've seen this a few times, but only during the initial setup - it's often caused by one of the following: The database server is turned off The network connection between the database server and the application is closed or somehow blocked (e.g. a firewall) The SQL Server instance is not set up to receive remote connections from the application server (e.g. TCP is turned off, remote connections are disabled, or the "SQL Server Browser" service is stopped/disabled) However, if I assume that no configuration changes have been made, I'm trying to postulate on what the reason might be for getting this error at a random point after the initial setup. My initial thought is: SQL Server machine has run out of resources (e.g. RAM) and is unable to accept new requests from the application server Is this a valid theory? What other possible causes are there of this error that are not related to the initial setup of the server / application connection? Or is it simply impossible that this error could occur without a configuration change having been made (either on the SQL Server side, application side, or somewhere in-between (network))? NOTE: I believe this question differs from the plethora of questions related to this error message because the application and server have been talking to each other quite happily until now (most, if not all, other questions seem to relate to initial setup).

Restrictions, the .NET binary should be able to live on a share point (\server\share\myapp\v1) so I can update the application to (\server\share\myapp\v2) and simply update the GPO/Logon script. My initial thought was to use the \domaincontroller\sysvol\ directory to store the binary and then update all user accounts to include a call to my application. Can you see any flaws in this approach? My question is this: First, is there anything wrong with my idea above? Second, if so, what is the best way (through group policy or otherwise) to ensure this application launches whenever a session is started on a server?
