• 13.04: update-initramfs works but mkinitramfs fails from APT

  I'm experiencing a strange thing, I've freshly upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04, Everything is fine except that it can't build the initrd image automatically, it fails and prints out the mkinitramfs's Usage output. I tried to debug the "mkinitramfs" script and it appears the $outfile variable is never set. However, I'm able to produce the ramdisk manually like follow: update-initramfs -c -u 3.0.8-23-generic I tried most of the stuff seen on the net: purge, reinstall but no help but nothing, and I can't use linux-image is marked as "broken" but the kernel exists in /boot.

• Why my MainWindow doesn't get he focus?

• Virtualbox windows 7 guest - pressing windows key launches unity menu

  Running win7 as guest in full screen mode. When i press windows key or alt+tab the vm looses focus and displays the unity menu or ubuntu's alt+tab. I've set the VBox configuration: File Menu - Input - Auto Capture Keyboard but it looks like some times it captures it and some times it doesn't Do you know how to run win7 in fullscreen and have all windows key or alt+tab strokes captured by the win7vm only?

• Save inkscape figure in 400dpi (png or jpeg)

  I'm a difficulty in Ubuntu. I need to save a figure work of Inkscape in png or jpeg format, however, this figure work needs to be 400dpi resolution. I saved the jpeg using output pro inkscape plugin, but I can not insert the image into LibreOffice Writter (I think the reason is that the image was very extensive, but I am obliged to do so, because my university has the using standard figures 400dpi). Could anyone help me? Thank you!

• Best language on Linux to replace manual tasks that use SSH/Telnet? [on hold]

  I've been tasked to create and maintain a web browser based interface to replace several of the manual tasks that we perform now. I currently have a "shakey" but working program written in Perl (2779 lines) that uses basic Expect coding, but it has some limitations that require a great deal of coding to get around. Because of this I am going to do a complete rewrite and want to do it "right" this time. My question is this... What would be the best language to use to create a web based interface to perform SSH/Telnet tasks that we would normally do manually? Keep in mind the following requirements: Runs on a CentOS Linux system v5.10 Http will be served by Apache2 This is an INTRANET site and only accessible within our organization. User load will be light. No more that 5 users accessing it at one time. perl 5.8.8, php 5.3.3, python 2.7.2 are available... Not sure what other languages to check for, or what modules might be installed in each language. The web interface will need to provide progress indicators and text output produced by the remote connection, in real time as it is generated. If we are running our process on multiple hosts, they should be in individual threads so that they can run side by side, not sequentially. I want the ability to "trap" on specific text generated by the remote host and display an alert to the user - such as when the remote host generates an error message. I would like to avoid as much client side scripting (javascript/vbscript) as I can. Most users will be on Windows PC's using Chrome or IE as a browser. Users will be downloading the resulting output so they can process it as they see fit. I currently have no experience with "Ajax" or the like. Most of my coding experience is old 6809 assembly, Visual Basic 6, and whatever I can cut/paste from online examples in various languages (hence my "shaky" Perl program) My coding environment is Eclipse for remote code editing, but I prefer stuff like UltraEdit if I can get a decent syntax file for the language I'm using. I do have su access on the server, but I'm not the only one using this server so I can't just upgrade/install blindly as I might impact other software currently running on the machine. One reason that I'm asking here, instead of searching (which I did) is that most replies were, "use language 'xyz', but you need to use an external SSH connection" - like I'm using Expect in my Perl script. Most also did not agree on what language that 'xyz' should be. ...so, after this long posting, can someone offer some advice?

  After upgrading my Ubuntu to the newest version 13.10, in the login interface, my account does not appear. I can login the guest session. There is also a remote login. I have no place to input my username to login my account. But, unlike in Windows 7 i cant find HDMI as an output anywhere in the settings, neither for video nor audio. can anyone please tell me step by step how i do this ? I've tried loading earlier kernels [3.2.0 ] but that hasn't helped. I've tried playing with alsamixer, unmuting and raising volume, doesn't work I've tried playing with pauvcontrol, doesnt work. Althought, strangely, when i play a song, under output i can see a bar moving implying that something is working, just the sound isn't getting through my speakers. Thus it might be a hardware problem. I've tried unistalling and reinstalling pulsaudio annd alsamixer, doesn't work [maybe made it worse...]. I've heard reverting back to kernel 3.0... works, but i'm reluctant to try that[i dont know much about kernels]. Thank you. Please tell me what other information you need. EDIT: My audio has started working again after another reboot. However this time im not connected to my external audio on startup. I will see if this is the issue next time i'm at home Edit: Connecting to external audio is not the problem.

• Is there a more efficient way to filter large arrays than preg_match()?

  I have a log that our web application builds. Each month it contains around 16,000 entries of a string with about the average sentence worth of text. To filter/search through these in our admin panel the script uses preg_match() but this seems to be taking ages and timing out on the 30sec limit. I have isolated that it is indeed the preg_match() that causes the time out. Is there a more efficient way to search through values in a large array for a users input?

Graphics printing fine with UB12.04, VERY SLOW on UB12.10. Per an article ran: ~$ sudo apt-get install mesa-utils ~$ glxinfo | grep renderer Output: OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 8200/integrated/SSE2/3DNOW! Do I need to get a graphics card to fix or will software tweaks solve this?
