How to avoid chaotic ASP.NET web application deployment?

Ok, so here's the thing. I'm developing an existing (it started being an ASP classic app, so you can imagine :P) web application under ASP.NET 4.0 and SQLServer 2005. We are 4 developers using local instances of SQL Server 2005 Express, having the source-code and the Visual Studio database project This webapp has several "universes" (that's how we call it). Every universe has its own database (currently on the same server) but they all share the same schema (tables, sprocs, etc) and the same source/site code. So manually deploying is really annoying, because I have to deploy the source code and then run the sql scripts manually on each database. I know that manual deploying can cause problems, so I'm looking for a way of automating it. We've recently created a Visual Studio Database Project to manage the schema and generate the diff-schema scripts with different targets. I don't have idea how to put the pieces together I would like to: Have a way to make a "sync" deploy to a target server (thanksfully I have full RDC access to the servers so I can install things if required). With "sync" deploy I mean that I don't want to fully deploy the whole application, because it has lots of files and I just want to deploy those new or changed. Generate diff-sql update scripts for every database target and combine it to just 1 script. For this I should have some list of the databases names somewhere. Copy the site files and executing the generated sql script in an easy and automated way. I've read about MSBuild, MS WebDeploy, NAnt, etc. But I don't really know where to start and I really want to get rid of this manual deploy. If there is a better and easier way of doing it than what I enumerated, I'll be pleased to read your option. I know this is not a very specific question but I've googled a lot about it and it seems I cannot figure out how to do it. I've never used any automation tool to deploy. django : Serving static files through nginx

I'm using apache+mod_wsgi for django. And all css/js/images are served through nginx. For some odd, reason when others/friends/colleagues try accessing the site, jquery/css is not getting loaded for them, hence the page looks jumbled up. My html files use code like this - <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://x.x.x.x:8000/css/custom.css"/> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://1x.x.x.x:8000/js/custom.js"></script> My nginx configuration in sites-available is like this - server { listen 8000; server_name localhost; access_log /var/log/nginx/aa8000.access.log; error_log /var/log/nginx/aa8000.error.log; location / { index index.html index.htm; } location /static/ { autoindex on; root /opt/aa/webroot/; } } There is a directory /opt/aa/webroot/static/ which have corresponding css & js directories. The odd thing is that the pages show fine when I access them. I have cleared my cache/etc, but the page loads fine for me, from various browsers. Also, I don't see 404 any error in the nginx log files. Any pointers would be great.

Twitter OAuth, Error when trying to POST direct message.

So I am building a java script that is used in conjunction of my C++ application for sending direct messages to users. the script does the work of building the request that i send. When i send a request i receive "Incorrect signature" or "can not authenticate you" Does anyone see something i am missing or am doing wrong? I am continuing to investigate. Initialize webservice WSDL at runtime using Flex and Mate framework

I am developing a Flex application on top of Mate framework. In this application, I am using a webservice to retrieve data. As this webservice as not a fix location URL (depending on where customers installed it), I define this URL in a config file. When the Flex application starts, it first reads this config file, then I would like to use the value I found to initialize the webservice. But currently, I have no idea how to this. Python and MySQLdb

What bothers me is that the snippet of code above returns no results; essentially meaning that the way that the query is being executed is wonky. I executed the SQL query (including the set variables with actual values, and it returned the correct number of results). If I modify the query to just be a simple SELECT FROM query (SELECT * FROM poi_table) it returns results. What is going on here?

jQuery RJS inserting string vs dom.

So I am trying to use jQuery to insert data from an ajax call. I actually use the jquery.form plugin, and have the ajax form submitted with a dataType: 'script'. The response is a jquery expression which contains a <%= javascript_escape(render ...) %> erb tag (similar to what the railscasts episode 136 instructs to do). However the end result is that the full text of the render is inserted as if that was the content to be inserted into the page, as text, not as dom elements. Could the fact that the render had some newlines at the beginning be the cause? Dom text: "\n \n <li>....</li>" I also tried having jQuery just read the response as a script and execute it, and used the prototype-based rjs stuff, same effect, the text is inserted into the dom. Are there any reasons why such a behavior would be experienced? A bit of clarification: My response.js.erb is jQuery("#content").append("<%= escape_javascript(render(:partial => "widgets")) %>"); jQuery("#information").text("Finally, something happened!"); The full text inside the append() call is inserted as text into #content.

Javascript and webshop tracking/affiliate across websites, how to do?

Hi, I have a small front end to a webshop. All customers that go through my website and buy an item from the webshop I get back 5% of the amount. I need to find a way af tracking the customers i forward from my webshop to the other webshop. And then get the webshop to reply to me when the purchase has been made. In my webshop i have made a small page: collect.aspx that requests and saves the values passed in the querystring, something like this pseudo code: string orderid = Request["orderid"]; string amount = Request["amount"]; ..save to database On the webshop i forward customers to i get to insert a javascript on the last page in the purchase flow. I have tried a lot of things but it seems that the only thing that works is to fool the browser into thinking im referring a javascript, like this: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://domain.com/mypage.aspx?orderid=4&amount=45/> I saw how other trackers did their bit, and this seems to be the general way of doing it. With this script however, i get all the orders, i only want to log those that belong tome, those who entered through my website. Here is my big problem, how to do this? I added a cookie when the user opens my page, and i want to check for this cookie again when the purchase page make the callback. It weems that i cant get the cookie from the browser when it makes the "" call. This is really buggin me now. Could anyone please tell me how this is generally done, this tracking. And what am i missing in regards to this cookie thing? All ideas on how to do this is very welcome.

Triggering PHP from ActiveMQ

Background: Our current system involves two services (one written in Java, the other in PHP) that communicate with each other using HTTP callbacks. We would like to migrate from HTTP callbacks to a message-based architecture using ActiveMQ (or another, if necessary). We'll probably use STOMP to communicate between them. Eventually, the PHP service will be rewritten in Java, but that's not part of this project. Question: How can the ActiveMQ system notify PHP that a new message has been posted to the queue that the PHP system is subscribed to? In the current system, the callback inherently calls into the PHP and triggers it. This goes away with a message-based architecture. Possible solutions: Cron regularly calls a PHP script that checks for new messages. yuck. A long-running PHP process that loops and sleeps and checks for new messages. less yuck? ActiveMQ calls a PHP script when a new message is posted. good, how? ??

I am trying to capture the selected item in a Dijit Tree widget to render remaining part of the web page. Matching Regular Expression in Javascript and PHP problem...

I can't figure out how to get the same result from my Javscript as I do from my PHP. In particular, Javascript always leaves out the backslashes. In addition, I render a switch bound to active. The update handler in the DataSource is never invoked (not even for the first chosen switch and despite the DataSource for that first toggled switch is updated). I have to Search for the files with only .txt format in the current directory, count the number of cases of each different "Interface # nnnn" string in .txt file, where nnnn is a four or 32 digits max hexadecimal no and o/p of a table of Interface number against occurrence. I am facing implementation issues while writing a script i.e, Unable to implement the data structure like Linked List, Two Dimensional array. I am rewriting a script using multi dimension array (Pass values into the arrays in and out of procedure) in TCL to scan through the every .txt file and search for the the string/regular expression ‘Interface # ’ to count and display the number of occurrences. If someone could help me to complete this part will be much appreciated. Search for only .txt extension files and obtain the size of the file Here is my piece of code for searching a .txt file in present directory set files [glob *.txt] if { [llength $files] > 0 } { puts "Files:" foreach f [lsort $files] { puts " [file size $f] - $f" } } else { puts "(no files)" } I reckon these are all the possible logical steps behind to complete it i) Once searched and find the .txt file then open all .txt files in read only mode ii) Create a array or list using the procedure (proc) Interface number to NULL and Interface count to zero 0 iii) Scan thro the .txt file and search for the string or regular expression "interface # iv) When a match found in .txt file, check the Interface Number and increment the count for the corresponding entry. Dropping all user tables/sequences in Oracle

As part of our build process and evolving database, I'm trying to create a script which will remove all of the tables and sequences for a user. I don't want to do recreate the user as this will require more permissions than allowed. My script creates a procedure to drop the tables/sequences, executes the procedure, and then drops the procedure. SyntaxHighlighter and Line Break Tags

I am using the following syntax highligher: http://alexgorbatchev.com/wiki/SyntaxHighlighter For some reason when it encounter <br> it simply prints out <br> tags. I cannot replace the whole thing with System.Environment.NewLine since it will mess up the complete description. Am I correctly extracting JPEG binary data from this mysqldump?

I have a very old .sql backup of a vbulletin site that I ran around 8 years ago. I am trying to see the file attachments that are stored in the DB. The script below extracts them all and is verified to be JPEG by hex dumping and checking the SOI (start of image) and EOI (end of image) bytes (FFD8 and FFD9, respectively) according to the JPEG wiki page. But when I try to open them with evince, I get this message "Error interpreting JPEG image file (JPEG datastream contains no image)" What could be going on here? I see some that are not listed in the wiki page (specifically, I see a lot of 5C bytes, so FF5C). But the list is of "common markers" so I'm trying to find a more complete list. Any guidance here would also be appreciated.

Aplication Process never Terminates on each run

i am seeing an application always remains live even after closing the application using my below perl script.Also for the subsequent runs it always says that "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.iperf.exe -u -s -p 5001 successful. Output was:" so everytime i have to change the file name $file used in script or i have to kill the iperf.exe process in the Task Manager. could anybody please let me know the way to get rid of it ? Converting timestamp to time ago in php e.g 1 day ago, 2 days ago...

hi everyone, i am trying to convert a timestamp of the format: 2009-09-12 20:57:19 and turn it into something like '3 minutes ago' with php. I found a useful script to do this, but I think its looking for a different format to be used as the time variable. Issue using GAE appcfg.py

I get nothing out of appcfg.py besides the default output. I'm trying to upload some data to my development project with no luck at at all. From the instructions on the Google App Engine page the steps are as follows: Edit app.yaml update with appcfg.py make upload script upload with appcfg.py After step one I try to run the update and it never shows any success. The following commands product the same output: appcfg.py appcfg.py update appDir appcfg.py update appDir/ appcfg.py update /appDir If i try to follow the instructions from the appcfg.py output and type help upload and get: "help <action>" I get a response from the system, This command is not supported by the help utility. Try "update /?". cause I'm calling the system help command. If I use the command appcfg.py help upload I get the same result as just typing appcfg.py Can someone show me examples of the syntax to update the dev site, upload data to it and get appcfg.py to actually give help on its commands? Also I'm just assuming that the upload script and the .csv file that are being uploaded are in they myApp directory. Appreciate any help,
