• forced reformat without login / and bootcamp

  ok.. im pretty good with stuff like this, but I have a question. I have mac mini with 10.5.(x) on one partition, and bootcamp (windows) on the other. My boss wants me to reformat the whole mac (10.6 (x)), which is usually easy. He does not remember his password to login, which means I cannot log in and allocate the bootcamp back to one partition using Disk Utility, then reformat the whole drive. When I insert the Snow leopard CD, I can only wipe out one partition, my question is: Is there a way to force a wipe out of both drives in the boot sequence? Any help to wipe out this whole drive and do a clean install would be helpful.. Thanks superusers!

• Disable pop-up for "Faulting application" on login - Windows Server 2003

  I have a service running on a Windows 2003 server. The service executes a .exe file to process some data. Sometimes the .exe crashes due to incorrect input and it logs an error to the Application Log which is fine. If I remote login to the server I get a pop-up of the .exe file crash, for each crash which has occured since I last logged in. The crashes can safely be ignored and I'd like to ignore these pop-ups. Is there a way to disable these pop-ups?

• Ubuntu displaying GDM but no login

  Ubuntu (Wubi, Lucid Lynx) boots and shows the login screen itself with the background and plays the boot sound but a list of users is never displayed. A mouse is on screen and I can move it but, alas, it does nothing. Dropping to a virtual term with CTRL+Alt+F# drops me to a cursor but I can't actually input anything. I can't boot into single-user with GRUB since it's Wubi and it never specifies a boot kernel directly in GRUB's initial menu.lst (only in files that it then reads from). Other details that may be helpful: Single monitor Same video card that's been working for months No new hardware Edit: I ssh'd in since it evidently booted up the sshd which is handy. dpkg-reconfigure gdm didn't do anything helpful. I do, however, get a "no seat-id found" when manually running it.

• GDM login screen is not displayed with VNC

  Hi, I set up VNC server with xinetd. Also configured GDM so that XDMCP is enabled. VNC connection seems okay, but GDM login screen is not shown. Instead I can only see old bare X screen (gray meshed background and X-shaped mouse pointer), which I can't do any interaction with it. What can I do to fix the problem? No log is written below /var/log/. • Change user login in Windows 7 (after a misprint in username)

  I have an install of Windows 7 that I've already put a few days into. Today I realized I've made a mistake in the username and it's driving me nuts (my personal OCD). While changing the physical folder name is perhaps possible, though quite involved, I do not want to open that can of worms. What I want to do is simply change the username I give when the login prompt shows up. I thought it's possible by just renaming the user account in the User Accounts but that didn't work. Is it possible to do then? Or is the only way to create another user and spend hour migrating everything I'd already customized to that user?

That is because everytime while I logout it will go to gdm(graphical display manager) and there it Again checks for account test. It is available right so it will again login to same account. Here I want add delay, that means it should wait for sometime, If no one login to any other account, then only test account will log. how to add delay?

• OS X Login Authentication Against Leopard Server

  I am doing a few tests with OS X Server before I have to do a deploy in a few months. I have configured Open Directory, and created a few users. I've configured Directory Utility on a 10.5 client, but the login authentication doesn't work the way I would expect. I would expect I could user a username/password from any user created in Open Directory and be able to log into the client. Instead, it appears I need to create a local user, which you then sync with a directory user using Directory Utility. Alternatively, if I add an Active Directory config to the client, I can use any AD user, as I would expect. Am I hoping for the impossible, or is something likely wrong with the configuration?

• Login authentication vanished from MongoDB install

  A few months ago I enabled password protection on my MongoDB install. Today I ran the Mongo client and forgot to use my login details. Instead of rejecting nearly everything I try to do from the shell, like it should, I had complete access to all the databases and collections. Fortunately this instance is only running a few test apps, so I quickly shutdown the MongoD instance until I figure this out. Has anybody ever seen this kind of behavior before and knows what is going on? The MongoD instance is running on a Linux VM hosted by Azure. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps Azure restored an old copy of the VM, but I received no E-mails to that effect and everything else on the server seems to be proper, including new daemon processes that I added after I enabled password protection on MongoD.

  Hi, i have recently been given the task of trying to work out why the login time (not machine boot time) for some of our users seems slow. The vast majority of clients (95%) are running on XP sp3, Windows 2003 domain controlers. Most users have the same model of machine. I would like to be able to see how long each of the polices are taking to load (if possable split user and computer) and any other info that might help (services starting etc) I changed the userenvdebuglevel reg option to generate the userenv.log file but it did'nt contain very much info Thanks Luke

• Dreamweaver Files uploaded to Win 2008 server cause login prompt

  I have a customer who uses a 4 year old version of Dreamweaver to edit her webpages. My hosting reseller account is with a company that uses Windows Server 2008. Every time my customer edits a page and uploads it, I have to set the permissions for that file to be readable, manually from the site's control panel. The customer is furious with me because her files cause the login prompt. I am able to upload files myself that remain readable to the site with both Filezilla and with Frontpage. I am assuming that her Dreamweaver settings are the cause of the problem but I don't have that program myself and don't know what to advise her. Any suggestions?

• Repeated Reporting Services Login issue when deploying through BIDS to a remote server

  We are having a problem deploying a reporting services report to a sql reporting services computer that is configured in SharePoint Integrated mode. I can successfully deploy to the SharePoint document libraries set up for reports and data connections if I do it locally from the box that SharePoint and Reporting Services are deployed on. If I try and do the same thing with the exact same deployment properties from a remote box, I constantly get a Reporting Services Login dialog popping up and no combination of domain\username and password will work. I've even tried the machines local admin account and still nothing. Any ideas where to start looking?

  I need to be able to login to a RHEL 6 server using rsh (please don't flame me about security, it's irrelevant in this particular instance) as root without having to enter a password. My procedure for setting this up works great in RHEL 5.x, but does not work in RHEL 6. I suspect this has something to do with PAM, but I'm inexperienced with how to use PAM.   Windows 7 64 bit. Been in use approx 2 years since last rebuild. Recently, system is misbehaving. Specifically, on bootup, I get the login screen. I login, I get my desktop wallpapers (2 monitors). I get one widget (Rainlender2). It now pauses for approx 12 minutes. After that time, it continues fine, without errors/popups. It acts like the delay never happens. How do I identify the cause of the delay?

  I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right. But that's not what this question is about. Thanks.)

• Data loss with roaming profiles on login on two different computers

  We have a Windows server 2003 system with Active Directory and all of our users have roaming profiles. One of the users let someone login with his username and password on a different computer (2) while he was working on his own computer (1). Now when this user logs in on his own computer (1), the profile that is loaded is one that dates back many months (i think from the last time he logged on to computer 2). My suspicion is that the profile that was cached on computer 2 from many months back when this user last logged on on this computer, on logoff, synced over the newer profile on the server. so that now when he logs in, he gets this old profile. Now my questions: Is it possible to retrieve te newer profile? Is it possible to keep this from happening in the future?

  I'm trying to get pam_mount working on Ubuntu 12.04. I have /dev/sda1 (encrypted partition) with /dev/dm-1 (ext4 formatted) inside it. Should ~/.pam_mount.conf.xml be trying to mount /dev/sda1 or /dev/dm-1? If I use the line: <volume fstype="ext4" path="/dev/dm-1" mountpoint="~/slowstore" options="rw" /> then it nearly works. It prompts for the password (ok, I'd like pam_mount to do that for me, but still..) then I get: pam_mount(rdconf2.c:126): checking sanity of luserconf volume record (/dev/dm-1) pam_mount(rdconf2.c:132): user-defined volume (/dev/dm-1), volume not owned by user If I do: sudo chown nick:disk /dev/dm-1 Then re-login the encrypted partition mounts correctly (ignoring th fact I have to reneter the password). However, if I log out completely the ownership on /dev/dm-1 gets reset to root:disk. What am I doing wrong?

  At some point my touchpad stopped working on Lenovo x220 under Ubuntu 11.10, after login. I have found two possible solutions for that online, but neither of them work. First, gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true and a second one, xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Off" 8 0 After looking more carefully into xinput I have realized that xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" outputs: Device Enabled (132): 0 This field seems to be stuck to zero, because trying to set it back to 1 by: xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Device Enabled" 8 1 doesn't seem to have any effect, e.g. I still have: Device Enabled (132): 0 Any ideas?   Afternoon. We have three identical terminal servers running Windows Server 2003 SP2, on these servers there are about 250 concurrent users logged on. We're running Roaming Profiles on a central server running Active Directory which cache the profiles locally on each terminal server as well. When one, and just that one, user tries to login she gets this error message (roughly translated from Swedish): "You could not be logged in becouse your principle could not be registered. Check that you're connected to the network or ask your administrator Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." Anyone have an idea about this? I'm stumped ... • What''s the "earliest" place one can set an environment variable during Linux boot process?

  I know I can set a variable in a shell startup file, but the thing is, I am trying to set up a POSIX-compatible environment, and a POSIX shell does not parse any startup files other than the one specified by the environment variable ENV. This presents a problem - currently my login starts the shell as bash, which I will try to replace with sh so Bash runs as POSIX shell - however then it will not parse the default startup files and I need ENV set to specify these. Which means as far as I understand that I need to specify ENV before login starts the shell, correct? Now, how would I do that? I hope my question is clear, if not I will gladly redact it.

• Need a GUI app for group policy login script

  I wrote a C# 4.0 application that works on a Windows computer but when using Group Policy to set it as a login script, it does not run. The application is being called from the same location and using rsop.msc shows that the application should be run. I see that using C# 4.0 may be a little overkill for this purpose, but it just seems wrong to write a VB6 application to do the same thing. The requirements for the application states that there need to be specific GUI elements that can't be just text on the window. I need larger fonts and color elements. Is there something more appropriate (and current) that I should be using?

  I added a user for the sole purpose of using SU for root. I did not allow the creation of a home directory when creating the user. So now when I login as this user I get the following: Could not chdir to home directory /home/MYUSERNAME: No such file or directory Couldn't resolve homedir for current user at - line 0 BEGIN failed--compilation aborted.   There are many examples showing how to use .htaccess to restrict users by login or on their IP address (i.e they are ok from the ones given without authorisation). For some reason the following is never mentioned, yet it seems quite useful. How do I restrict using groups and ip, e.g. group1 can access the page from anywhere group2 can access the page only from certain IP addresses if you are not logged on, you cant see the page, regardless where you are I would like to have all 3 of these working at the same time.

  I upgraded my wife's Windows 7 machine, to Windows 8 Pro, about 10 days ago. She's been using it fine ever since. We typically leave our desktops running 24/7, and just turn off the monitor. This morning she turned the monitor on, and saw the screen with the Seattle Space Needle, and then she pressed the enter key to get to the login screen. Nothing happened. Next she pressed the mouse key. Nothing happened. The mouse moves around fine. But we can't get it past the Seattle Space Needle screen. She replaced the batteries in both her keyboard and mouse recently. So, what's going on? How do we fix it?

• Citrix on ESX 4 U1 - Slow login times

  I'm sure they'd be just as slow if not slower using ESX 3 but I'm looking for some assistance. On a physical Citrix server, logins are 1 - 4 seconds. The virtual - 16 - 23 seconds. I'm looking for performance enhancements that I can make to me VMs to try and reduce the login wait times. The hardware is fine (HP BL685 (24 cores, 64GB RAM). And there's nothing pushing it yet. Network 10Gb I'm planning to test the configuration with VMXNET3 tomorrow, but does anyone have a list a best practices I can use when testing?
