  • Is possible to write too many asserts?

    - by Lex Fridman
I am a big fan of writing assert checks in C++ code as a way to catch cases during development that cannot possibly happen but do happen because of logic bugs in my program. This is a good practice in general. However, I've noticed that some functions I write (which are part of a complex class) have 5+ asserts which feels like it could potentially be a bad programming practice, in terms of readability and maintainability. I think it's still great, as each one requires me to think about pre- and post-conditions of functions and they really do help catch bugs. However, I just wanted to put this out there to ask if there is a better paradigms for catching logic errors in cases when a large number of checks is necessary.

  • What's an acceptable "Avg. Page Load Time"?

    - by hawbsl
Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

  • Geek City: sp_cacheobjects for SQL Server 2012

    - by Kalen Delaney
In a post about 4 1/2 years ago , I gave you my version of a replacement for the old pre-2005 pseudotable syscacheobjects . I called it sp_cacheobjects and created it as a view in the master database. With the sp _ prefix, the view can be accessed from any database. When testing this on SQL Server 2012, I noticed that I almost always got a lot more rows back than I was expecting. Even when I added a WHERE clause to limit the database to only the database I was working in, I STILL got way to many...(read more)

  • AMD 6870 Twin Frozr II video adapter issues

    - by user35427
Hardware: AMD 6870 Twin Frozr II (1GB), ASUS 990 chipset Software: Ubuntu 11.10 Built a new PC from scratch, loaded it with Ubuntu 11.10. It's displaying, but with poor resolution, unable to change, as it says no drivers are installed. Ubuntu indicates that there are 2 proprietary drivers available to download: ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX Graphics driver (Post-release update) ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX Graphics driver The first won't even finish downloading. The second downloads and installs, but when I restart the PC as requested it boots up, I see purple in the background, then the video feed just stops with a black screen. I can still hear ubuntu boot up though. It seems like I just need the latest drivers, googled around and not had much luck. I'm pretty new with Ubuntu, but have basic knowledge. Any potentially helpful information would be welcome.

  • Android Application for Final Year Project [closed]

    - by user1070241
I hope this is the right place to post this question. Basically, I'm about to choose a Final Year Project for my third and final year in BSc Computer Science. I have worked with different apps and therefore I do have some experience with the Android SDK Platform in general. However, my question is this, how do you think an Android based project would go down with potential employers? I personally don't think the complexity of this project is lower than other projects proposed by my university. Please let me know what you think, and do share any experiences that you have had with this, if any. Thank you very much.

    - by Matus
i have ubuntu 12.04 on my Zotac AD-02. I've read that sometimes it has something to do with graphics. It is mainly for DLNA and PLEX so i don't use any graphic component so if there is the problem tell me how to disable it :) is there some log or anything i can post? im fairly good at bash but not at all in ubuntu or debian. so i can't find any log. • How to improve quality of software

    - by hariharan
Last week in our organization, we triggered a topic related to different ways of improving the quality of software (both technical as well as functional related topics). Since i am a technical person, i suggested following ideas, Use case based detailed design document – Both technical as well as functional specification should be well organized according to use case requirement. Design patterns – Will help developers to adopt common approach irrespective of technologies. Analyze and implement new technologies – Helps to improve the performance as well as the security of the application. As I am not a well experienced technical candidate , i am unable to provide other solutions. If any suggestions or topics related to this (including testing, functional requirement), please post your valuable comments.

  • Non-mathematical Project Euler (or similar)?

    - by Juha Untinen
I checked the post (Where can I find programming puzzles and challenges?) where there's a lot of programming challenges and such, but after checking several of them, they all seem to be about algorithms and mathematics. Is there a similar site for purely logic/functionality-based challenges? For example: - Retrieve data using a web service - Generate output X from a CSV file - Protect this code against SQL injection - Make this code more secure - What is wrong with this code (where the error is in logic, not syntax) - Make this loop more efficient Does a challenge site like that exist? Especially one that provides hints and/or correct solutions. That would be a very helpful learning site.

  • Samsung a-t-il triché sur les benchmarks pour le Galaxy S4 ? Les performances de l'Exynos 5 remises en cause après des tests

  • How can I create multiple mini-sites with similar/duplicate content without hurting my search engine rank?

    - by ekpyrotic
Essential background: I run a small company that lets members of the public post handwritten letters to their local politician (UK-based). Every week a number of early stage bills (called Early Day Motions) are submitted for debate in the House of Commons, and supporters of the motion will contact their local Members of Parliament, asking them to sign the motion. The crux: I want to target these EDMs with customised mini-sites, so when people search "EDM xxx", they find my customised mini-site, specifically targeting that EDM (i.e., "Send a handwritten letter to your MP asking them to sign EDM xxx"). At the moment, all these mini-sites (and my homepage) have duplicate content with only the relevant EDM name, number, and background image changed. (For example, http://mailmymp.com and http://mailmymp.com/edm/teaching-life-saving-skills-at-school-edm-550.php). The question: Firstly, will this hurt my potential search engine ranking? And, if so, what's the best way to target these political campaigns in an efficient manner without hurting my SEO prospects?

A Story… Once upon a time I was a manufacturing systems integrator. That’s a fancy description of a person who designs and builds machine control systems. I was asked to replace a control system and given a tight timeline to accomplish the work. My engineering spidey-senses were tingling, but there were bills to pay and the promise...(read more)

  • deny-uncovered-http-methods in Servlet 3.1

    - by reza_rahman
Servlet 3.1 is a relatively minor release included in Java EE 7. However, the Java EE foundational API still contains some very important changes. One such set of features are the security enhancements done in Servlet 3.1 such as the new deny-uncovered-http-methods option. Servlet 3.1 co-spec lead Shing Wai Chan outlines the use case for the feature and shows you how to use it in a recent code example driven post. You can also check out the official specification yourself or try things out with the newly released Java EE 7 SDK.

  • =~ (equal-sign tilde) and m" ... " in .htaccess directive

    - by Lèse majesté
I saw this bit of code on an old forum post: SSLRequire %{HTTP_HOST} =~ m"\.secure\.powweb\.com" And I was just wondering what the =~ and m" ... " meant. I've been searching online and in the Apache documentation for any mention of the equal-sign tilde operator, but I've found no mention of it. I know that some directives can take a tilde to use a regular expression, but I've never seen the m" ... " form used before. What exactly is that m" ... " for? Where else would you see this form?

  • Why do we use networking libraries instead of plain NSURLRequests and NSURLConnection ?

    - by Amogh Talpallikar
in iOS development, I have often seen people creating a networking module to interact with their APIs. This module generally sits on top of a networking framework like MKNetWorkKit or AFNetWorking. In most of the cases, It's all about sending GET,POST request and parsing the response which is in most cases JSON. What extra practical benefits that these libraries provide that an iOS developer should be leveraging which the plain Cocoa Networking APIs lack ? I can understand RESTKit as one exception where it takes care of the conversion of JSON to native objects and also interfaces with Core Data but what about others ?

  • Minecraft: Slow performance OUT of the game

    - by blackn1ght
I downloaded Minecraft yesterday to see what the fuss is about, brilliant game! When playing in Windowed mode, if I try and do anything else, i.e. use the computer, when the game is paused, the computer is incredibly slow, it takes a minute just to type a short message into empathy. Also, once I quit the game, the computer remains slow for about 5 minutes, until it magically frees up and becomes fast again. Could this be related to the 512mb RAM limitation of Java, and the machine is swapping? Even trying to submit this post is incredibly slow and frustrating, it's taking me a minute just to click in the 'Tag's box. Any ideas? Ubuntu 10.10 x64 Intel Q9550 4GB RAM nVidia 8800GTS 320mb (w/prop drivers installed)

  • How will this affect my SEO ranking?

    - by dunc
I run a fishkeeping website based on a WordPress (PHP) CMS. I've recently put a fairly complex "filter" into place which searches my content for mentions of fish species profiles and turns them into an active link. For example, asdasd this is a test about abdomen to see if the caudal fin will work asdadasdas try again with abdomen and A. panduro and Apistogramma panduro ...becomes asdasd this is a test about abdomen to see if the caudal fin will work asdadasdas try again with abdomen and <a href="/?p=1703" class="link_species">A. panduro</a> and <a href="/?p=1703" class="link_species">Apistogramma panduro</a> On the rest of my website, the species are linked with pretty URLs such as /species/apistogramma-panduro/ but due to the way this filter works, the only information I can get access to is the idof the post. As such, I'm using /?p=1703 or whatever the ID is. What I'd like to know is: how much will this affect my SEO rating/ranking? Will it be detrimental if I don't rewrite the function? Thanks in advance,

  • Do I need the 'w' component in my Vector class?

    - by bobobobo
Assume you're writing matrix code that handles rotation, translation etc for 3d space. Now the transformation matrices have to be 4x4 to fit the translation component in. However, you don't actually need to store a w component in the vector do you? Even in perspective division, you can simply compute and store w outside of the vector, and perspective divide before returning from the method. For example: // post multiply vec2=matrix*vector Vector operator*( const Matrix & a, const Vector& v ) { Vector r ; // do matrix mult r.x = a._11*v.x + a._12*v.y ... real w = a._41*v.x + a._42*v.y ... // perspective divide r /= w ; return r ; } Is there a point in storing w in the Vector class?
