  One of my most popular blog entries of all time is my Contracting Tips: Fixed Bid vs. T&M post from January, 2004.  This post consistently shows up in my referrers list, usually coming from a search engine.  Recently, Brent Ozar (@BrentO) wrote a great argument for why he always bills by the hour (a.k.a. Time & Materials or T&M) which itself was a response to Mark Richman’s (@mrichman) post on why he never bills by the hour (fixed bid).  Each article has good arguments, and I encourage you to read them both and choose the best approach for you. As for me, my experience parallels Brent’s and I historically have leaned toward the Time & Materials model.

• Brightness controls doesn't work on a MacBook Pro 5.5

  I recently installed Ubuntu on my MacBook pro 5.5 (mid 2009). I have a problem with the brightness control. The thing is, when I try to reduce the brightness of my display which would help my battery life dramaticlly is doesnt work. I tried to use the system preference but no succes. I tried to look of it changes something if disconnect the computer from the charge I the screen will dimm but once against I failed. I tried many things such as pommed or Many other little things that I have had read on forums.

• Can't edit/drag-and-drop widgets in QtCreator in Unity, Gnome3 - ok

  I have QtCreator 2.4.1 (Qt 4.7.4) installed on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x86. When I try to change UI - drag-and-drop any widget (buttons, label, etc.) it won't let me do it, like it's read-only. The icon when I drag is a circle with a line through it. I've found that problem in Unity and it's suggested to install Gnome3 shell - Can't edit/drag-and-drop widgets in QtCreator I tried to install Gnome3 and it works fine as expected. But the question, is there any other way to work proper with QtCreator in Unity?

• transparent home directory encryption

  #1 I'm very new to the ubuntu home directory encryption or rather ecryptfs folder encryption. I read about the same within Dustin's blog & tried implementing it. Problem or query is my home directory is encrypted & has a www folder ... now when I reboot the system the decryption doesnt happen at startup/boot & apache is not able to find the files rather the folder www since it is not mounted ... in order to mount it I have to login .... is there a way by which an encrypted home / private folder can be mounted at boot without human intervention ? #2 I have installed ubuntu server 11.10 & had selected "encrypt home directory" when installing the same. With ubuntu things are working transparently even after reboot & without logging in. Kindly can anyone pls explain or guide on the same ?

• Game Patching Mac/PC

  Just wondering what types of solutions are available to handle patching of PC/Mac games that don't have any sort of auto updater built into them. In windows do you just spin off some sort of new install shield for the game that includes the updated files, hope you can read a valid registry key to point to the right directory, and overwrite files? If so how does that translate over to Mac where the game is normally just distributed as straight up .app file? Is there a better approach than the above for an already released product? (Assuming direct sells, and not through a marketplace that features auto-updating like Steam.) Are there any off the shelf auto-updater type libraries that could also be easily integrated with a C/C++ code base even after a game has been shipped to make this a lot simpler, and that are cross platform? Also how do auto-updaters work with new OS's that want applications and files digitally signed?

  I want to give my notebook to guests of my little Hotel as an extra service. I love the Ubuntu guest-account and I think that this is the best possible way to help my guests get free internet-access. I found out how to "design" their user-accounts with /etc/skel, but unfortunately I have no clue, how to show them a small introduction to the system and a kind of user-agreement "contract" when they login. I read of xmessage, but this is too minimalistic. I'd like to implement some pictures. Does anyone have any idea of how to make this possible? Would it be possible that the user is logged out automatically if he rejects the user-agreement? Thank you so much in advance, Steve.

• System doesn't boot when ubuntu is installed on an SSD

  I've recently discovered Ubuntu and decided to give it a try. I am using a Samsung Series 5 p530u3c-ad1 which comes with a 24gb SSD and a ~500gb HDD, My intention is to set the system files to the ssd and the rest to the HDD. The system works fine if I do a direct install using only the HDD, but if I try using the SSD for the system files the computer doesn't boot-up, I do not know if the SSD is being recognized by the computer, I think so because I could install Ubuntu on it, but it doesn't appear on the boot order or the boot menu. I read some posts and tried using boot-repair which pointed me not to forget to set my system to boot from my SSD, unfortunately I cannot because of the issues mentioned above. Thanks for your time.

  Hi Folks, I've been working with SQLCMD mode again today and one thing about it always bites me. If I execute a script like: ::CONNECT SERVER1 SELECT @@VERSION; ::CONNECT SERVER2 SELECT @@VERSION; ::CONNECT SERVER3 SELECT @@VERSION; I'm sure I'm not the only person that would be surprised to see all three SELECT commands executed against SERVER3 and none executed against SERVER1 or SERVER2. First a bit of background: APIs on EnvDTE (DTE for short, since that’s the entry point service you request from the environment) was originally an API intended to be used by macros. It’s also called the automation API. Most of the time, this is a simplified API that is easier to work with, but which doesn’t expose 100% of what VS is capable of doing. It’s also kind of the “rookie” way of doing VS extensibility (VSX for short), since most hardcore VSX devs sooner or later realize that they need to make the leap to the “serious” APIs. The “real” VSX APIs virtually always start with IVs, make heavy use of uint, ref/out parameters and HResults.   I have had a quick look but couldn't see anything related. Basically, if we were to accept payments for events on our website, via paypal (essentially a Buy it now! button), as a business, do we need a merchant's account, or will a regular bank account be acceptable? I may have some confusion in terms. My understanding is you need a merchant's account to accept credit card payments, but as we are using PayPal, is this necessary? • MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition. • Is it possible to stream music/video from an Apache server?

  I'm just starting to get into setting up a server. I've set up a basic Apache server to access some songs and movies. When I click one of the songs though, nothing happens. When I click one of the movies, sometimes it will open a new web page and act as though it is going to start playing, but never does. I know Apache is HTTP, not FTP and read somewhere that that could be a problem, but I'm uncertain of the differences. Anyway, is it possible to click on one of the songs and have it start streaming using, for example, Windows Media Player? If so, might someone either explain how to do so or direct me to where I can find it? Any information on retrieving media from an Apache server at this point would be most appreciated. -Edit- I don't know if it matters, but I'm using Windows 7 and Google Chrome

  I have been using OpenGL for a while and have read a large number of tutorials. Aside from the fact that a lot of them still use the fixed pipeline, they usually throw all the initialisation, state changes and drawing in one source file. This is fine for the limited scope of a tutorial, but I’m having a hard time working out how to scale it up to a full game. How do you split your usage of OpenGL across files? Conceptually, I can see the benefits of having, say, a rendering class that purely renders stuff to screen, but how would stuff like shaders and lights work? Should I have separate classes for things like lights and shaders?

• Skype, add-on applications, UAC and "Unable to respond"

  Just posting this blog tonight hoping it might save someone else a bunch of time. For call recording on Skype, I use a program called Pamela. Lately, when I'd first installed it, it would work fine. Later, however, it would come up and say: "Another application (Pamela.exe) is attempting to access Skype, but we are unable to respond". Am configured BIOS to boot second hard drive first (Ubuntu OS). and then i updated grub, so its shows windows 7 in the boot list. I can boot in to ubuntu, but i can't boot into windows 7, its shows error A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart . then am configured BIOS again to load windows 7 first, it shows windows 7 and ubuntu in the boot list, windows 7 is working, but i can't boot into ubuntu.. Help to solve this problem.. i want dual boot from any one of the drive...

• All-around programming language for use on desktop and mobile devices

  Given that I am a PHP programmer and open-source is a must, what would be the best and practical programming language to use for all of the following: A desktop/cross-platform application. I've read that with HTML5, creating offline apps are possible? A web application. Android and iPhone/iPad apps. I am leaning towards using Python but I am not sure if it is possible to use it alone for all of them. There are other languages that I am also looking at like Ruby, Scala and Java. • Does MS create cross browser compatibility problems on purpose? [closed]

  IE does some weird **. E.G. Supporting the send() method in AJAX with no params. Poor support for XML (well IE9 I've heard things are alot better), but seriously...since MS owned such a huge market share on browsers were they intentionally dropping in problems like this and making it easy to write crap code to give the impression that competing browsers suck to the layman? Update I realize Javascript's limitations caused some of the Xcompatibility problems. I have read comments from Douglas Crockford regarding how javascript was rushed and exploded in popularity before its time...resulting in some of the issues he can't fix. I'm only concerned specifically about MS's intentions...problems they could have fixed, yet did not. Did any of you work on the IE team or know of articles discussing some details?

  Suppose an aggregate root : MailConfiguration (wrapping an AddressPart object). The AddressPart object is a simple immutable value object with some fields like senderAdress, recipentAddress (to make example simple). As being an invariant object, AddressPart should logically wrap its own Validator (by the way of external a kind of AddressValidator for respecting Single Responsibility Principle) I read some articles that claimed an aggregateRoot must validate its 'children'. However, if we follow this principle, one could create an AddressPart with an uncohesive/invalid state. What are your opinion? Should I move the collaborator AddressValidator(used in constructor so in order to validate immediately the cohesion of an AddressPart) from AddressPart and assign it to aggregateRoot (MailConfiguration) ?
