• ASP.NET developers turning to Visual WebGui for rich management system

  When The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) decided they needed a web application to allow easy access to the expenses management system they initially went to ASP.NET web forms combined with CSS. The outcome, however, was not satisfying enough as it appeared bland and lacked in richness. So in order to enrich the UI and give the web application some glitz, Visual WebGui was selected. Visual WebGui provided the needed richness and the familiar Windows look and feel also made the transition for the desktop users very easy. The richer GUI of Visual WebGui compared to ASP.NET conveyed some initial concerns about performance. But the Visual WebGui performance turned out to be a surprising advantage as the website maintained good response times. Working with Visual WebGui required a paradigm shift for the development process as some of the usual methods of coding with ASP.NET did not apply. However, the transition was fairly easy due to the simplicity and intuitiveness of Visual WebGui as well as the good support and documentation. “The shift into a different development paradigm was eased by the Visual WebGui web forums which are very active thanks to a large, involved community. • Temporarily disable an AD server

  Topology and setup We have main office A, and branch office (abroad) B. Our ISP somehow messed up the MPLS, and office A<B will not be connected until a few days. At location B, we have an AD (and the other two ADs at location A). Location A also have an exchange server. The problems A few users at A have problem to login to their computers running Windows XP, the logon process kind of hangs where "Applying computer policies". Additionally, I can't start the Exchange management shell, it fails on get-recipient because the AD abroad (location B) is unreachable. Solution? I could delete the AD at B, but Im pretty sure it will be a hazzle to re-join it, and since the office is abroad it's not an option to just go there and re-install it - re join, I now wonder how I in location As primary and secondary ADs can temporarily disable AD at location B.

• How to add higher video resolution in Ubuntu 10.04 (UNR on EEE1101HA)

  I picked up an ASUS EEE 1101HA with Windows 7 and installed UBUNTU 10.04 Netbook Remix (dual boot). Ubuntu runs fine, but it doesn't recognize that the notebook LCD is 1388x768 and thus only offers 1024x768 and 800x600 as monitor resolution. So .. how can I tell it about that higher resolution? (Have root pwd & vi, una-bash-ed to use both.. ) UPDATE there is currently (early May 2010) no video-driver for the Intel GMA500 "Poulsbo" => no solution exists for now.

• How Scan any File or Folder Using Windows 8’s Built-in Anti-Virus

  Windows 8 includes a built-in antivirus solution that runs in the background. You might, however, be surprised that there is no obvious way to scan an item on demand. Here’s how to launch the Windows Defender GUI as well as add a scan option to the context menu. Manually Opening Windows Defender The first way to scan your files is to use the Windows Defender GUI, to do so navigate to: C:\Program Files\Windows Defender Then launch: MSASCui.exe When the GUI opens, choose to do a custom scan, then click the Scan now button. Now choose the folder you want to scan, and then click OK. That’s all there it to it. Scan Using the Context Menu If you don’t fancy opening the GUI, you could always add an option to the context menu. To do so, press the Windows + R keyboard combination to open a run box and type: shell:sendto Then press enter. Now go ahead and download this batch file we wrote, then unzip its contents into the SendTo folder. Now when you right click on a file or folder, you will be able to scan items using the “Send to” menu. Unfortunately it does use the command line scanner, nevertheless it gets the job done. That’s all there is to it. • One domain hiding two servers

  For our SaaS web-app we have two identical servers in two geographically separated data centers. FOO_1 is the production server and does real-time (MySQL master-slave) replication to its backup F00_2. We want our users to always go to THEFOO.COM which somehow points to the production server. So even if FOO_1 dies, we can just switch THEFOO.COM to redirect to FOO_2 so the failure is transparent. This switch can be manual or automatic but without failback (if FOO_1 somehow becomes available again). Is there a way to do this with DNS? I am getting stuck with ANAME and CNAMEs configuration. We don't use sub-domains, just straight domains. If not, what are other options? Does it make sense to just have a web server at LOVELY_FOO.COM and just redirect all traffic? I also looked at load balancers but didn't see a solution for across data centers/network providers.

• Setting up fail2ban to ban failed phpMyAdmin login attempts

  We've been using fail2ban to block failed ssh attempts. I would like to setup the same thing for phpMyAdmin as well. As phpMyAdmin doesn't log authentication attempts to a file (that I know of), I'm unsure of how best to go about this. Does a plugin / config exist that makes phpMyAdmin log authentication attempts to a file? Or is there some other place I should look for such an activity log? Ideally I will be able to find a solution that involved modifying fail2ban config only, as I have to configure fail2ban with the same options on multiple servers, and would prefer not to also modify the various phpMyAdmin installations on said servers.

• Options to optimize lotus notes 8.5.X

  Has anyone found actually useful optimization methods for the bulky, fat, eclipse giant, nuissance that is Lotus Notes 8.5? I want it to be fast, and not eat up system resources like crazy while I run it ALL day (as it is my company's corporate mail / cal / scheduling solution). I've tried various hacks for the JVM heap size (if I recall correctly). None really bring a performance improvement. I have a dual core cpu, if that helps (I tried going the route of optimizing JAVA for 2 cores in hopes it would work, but seen no speed improvement). Notes is just sooo bloated, anyone have any suggestions to optimize/mod this thing so it is more responsive and less of a resource hog. Note: I don't want to switch to the web version, or the standard stripped down versions, I am aware of those, I just cannot since we don't run those internally for the company.

• MAC and PC problems on home network

  Hello! At home we have a wireless router that my family want to use. We have our main computer physically connected to the router, and my laptop is connected wirelessly. When the network is like this then it is faultless. However, when my brother introduces is Apple MAC into the equation, both my laptop and the family machine gets all sorts of problems, primarily long load times and timeouts. The MAC, however, works fine. I think I've read something here or SF about a MAC continusly pinging a router which times it out, but I've not found any solution so far. • setting up multi-mon windows + mac

  Ok this is a stretch, but I know of some Windows only software that does this so curious if there is something that does it on the mac too. I have 2 monitors and 2 development machines - a PC and a Mac Mini. I want to be able to view/control both concurrently (one on each monitor). The Mac only has DVI out, the PC has both and my monitors have both. Any suggestions on how I can do it? A solution involving KVM or software (VNC/remoting) is OK... Thanks!

• Detecting man-in-the-middle attacks?

  There seem to be many possible ways to create man-in-the-middle attacks on public access points, by stealing the access point's local IP address with ARP spoofing. The possible attacks range from forging password request fields, to changing HTTPS connections to HTTP, and even the recently discovered possibilit of injecting malicious headers in the beginning of secure TLS connections. However, it seems to be claimed that these attacks are not very common. It would be interesting to see for myself. What ways are there to detect if such an attack is being attempted by someone on the network? I guess getting served a plain HTTP login page would be an obvious clue, and of course you could run Wireshark and keep reading all the interesting ARP traffic... But an automated solution would be a tiny bit more handy. Something that analyzes stuff on the background and alerts if an attack is detected on the network. It would be interesting to see for myself if these attack are actually going on somewhere.

  I'm looking for a way to set-up a web proxy at home. Hopefully there's a solution I can use to do this. Alternatively, do you have any ideas for setting up one at home using a proxy with an auto updating list? UPDATE - AutoUpdating list so the new sites are categorized and downloaded and the filtering is done by category instead of per site e.g. peerblock works this way Appliance as in a small dedicated hardware or device to perform this task, like WD TV live or Acer Aspire Revo with the media center edition I'd be ok with setting up Squid / Linux / SquidGuard even if i'm not familiar with *nix but ideally a small form factor pc with dual nic's would be ideal so it can be out of sight for the most part !

• Google Analytics cookie across SagePay checkout

  We use SagePay's Server integration for our online payments. We use Google Analytics to track activity on our website and Google Ecommerce tracking to log transactions. In Google Analytics, under the Ecommerce view, it shows direct/none for source/medium, as the 1st party cookie is lost when visiting the external SagePay checkout pages before the customer is redirected to my confirmation page which tracks the transaction. In all the answers I have viewed when searching for a solution, the suggestion is to alter the tracking code to read _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'none']); _gaq.push(['_setAllowLinker', true]); but this needs to be implemented on all pages, including 3rd party domains (SagePay). As SagePay don't allow javascript in their template customisation, what can I do? Is there another way? Edit: I just found this code: var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker('UA-XXXXX-X'); pageTracker._setCampNameKey('ga_campaign'); // name pageTracker._setCampMediumKey('ga_medium'); // medium pageTracker._setCampSourceKey('ga_source'); // source pageTracker._setCampNOKey('ga_nooverride'); // don't override pageTracker._trackPageview(); Could I store pre-checkout values for source/campaign/medium to a cookie and the retrieve it post-checkout into the code above, or would this start a new tracking session?

• Manual Duplex printing for Mac (and/or Linux)

  My printers don't support automatic duplex printing. I'm looking for a solution for my Mac and Linux computers that I've seen with most Windows printer drivers: Check "Manual duplex" in the printer screen Printer starts printing one side A dialog appears, asking me to flip the pages Printer prints the other side. One thing I can do, is print odd pages, then reopen the dialog and print even pages, but this is very inconvenient, especially when I only want to print a certain page range of the document as the Mac dialog forgets my previous page range every time. It gets even more inconvenient, when printing 2-up double sided, or when changing additional settings for this one printout. Is there maybe some tool, that can do this? Or maybe a "virtual printer driver" that can sit somewhere between the dialog and the actual printer driver, which manages these steps? (The Windows tool http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FinePrint can do something like that, but I don't need all of its features - and I need it on Mac/Linux) Thanks, Chris

• Better antivirus for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 VPS

  I have only one VPS with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 and want to buy an Antivirus. I tried NOD32 but they do not give less than 5 users in business edition (I have only one server). Kaspersky may be another solution but whether should i go for Internet Security or Anti-virus? I have few website hosted on this server and user have ability to upload .jpg, .gif, .zip files in few of the folders. Apart from above two any other suggestions on Antivirus that works well on above configuration and available for only one user? Thanks

  Features that I would ideally include in "HTPC-optimized": Full-screen. Navigable using a remote or the keyboard arrows. Legible at couch distances. Or, to put it another way, imagine the design requirements for Hulu Desktop or XBMC or WMC, applied to a web browser. Opera on a Wii meets most of these criteria but not being HD wastes a lot of potential. If a single solution doesn't exist, is there some combination of Firefox add-ons that will get me there?

  I need help on looking for a best solution of a web based open source FTP client that has a progress bar, e-mail notifications and easy file sharing with others. I am looking to set up one for our print department, and you send it is really getting expensive. I've look into net2ftp.com but styling it, is a bit pain in the bumbum....Also, Uploadify is also an option but with my lack of PHP knowledge I can't make it to actually do what I want it to do. • What's the best way of handling permissions for apache2's user www-data in /var/www ?

  Has anyone got a nice solution for handling files in /var/www/ ? We're running Name Based Virtual Hosts and the apache2 user is 'www-data' We've got two regular users & root. So when messing with files in /var/www ,rather than having to... chown -R www-data:www-data ...all the time, what's a good way of handling this? Supplementary question. How hardcore do you then go on permissions? This one has always been a problem in collaborative development environments. Cheers.

• One codec to rule them all

  I am streaming videos in my house via Windows Media Player Streaming, which is basically DLNA. So theoretically any DLNA compliant device can pick up the stream. However, I've quickly found that this is only one part of the solution. Over the years I've accumulated a ton of video-capable devices. While all these devices can see the Windows Media Player stream, they all speak in different codecs. And frankly, I am confused by codecs. In the beginning, I thought that the codecs were defined by the filename extension they carried (e.g. avi, mp4, wmv, etc...), but after further research, it looks like the extensions are simply containers. Inside an .avi file could reside several different codecs. So my question is this: is there a format/codec that plays equally well on any device.

• Can't type into some text fields in any browser on Windows 7

  I can't type into e.g. facebook's log in form with my computer. I hit my keys, but nothing happens. Special characters like c, c, š, etc. work. Backspace doesn't, delete does. This goes for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. This also happens with some other sites, sometimes even with gmail (or any google's log in form). I read somewhere that the solution is to reregister some dlls: regsvr32 mshtmled.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll The first two work, the third one says The module "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer.dll was not found. And of course, running just the first two didn't help. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

• Cannot log on to a remote server using rdp from windows 7 machine when I am remotley connected to th

  Bear withe me, here is my set up. I use my 27" iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo 4GB Ram to connect to my work desktop running Windows 7. From there I can administer other remote servers. Here is the problem. Using the Remote Desktop Client on my Mac I can connect to my work machine no problem. But when I then use the work machine to open a remote desktop session with another Windows server (usually SBS 2003 but applies to all) I get the log in prompt, I enter the user name password ensure i'm connecting to the domain, but it wont log me in. The error message is the same, as though I had typed the wrong password (i know this is not the case). Does anyone have a solution? Thanks in advance. Gary

• Error building main Guest Additions Module while installing VirtualBox guest additions

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 Guest on Ubuntu 12.04 Host using VirtualBox. Everything is from repository and no direct install. When I install the guest additions, the below error is shown in the console. Before running the command I mapped the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso in the Guest. The closest I could get is this article which says to install the latest version of VirtualBox (not the one from the repository). Is there any alternate solution? sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.1.12 Guest Additions for Linux......... VirtualBox Guest Additions installer Removing installed version 4.1.12 of VirtualBox Guest Additions... Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done. Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done.
