  • When to use new layouts and when to use new activities?

    I'm making a game in Android and I'm trying to add a set of menu screens. Each screen takes up the whole display and has various transitions available to other screens. As a rough summary, the menu screens are: Start screen Difficult select screen Game screen. Pause screen. Game over screen. And there are several different ways you can transition between screen: 1 - 2 2 - 3 3 - 4 (pause game) 4 - 1 (exit game) 4 - 3 (resume game) 3 - 5 (game ends) Obviously, I need some stored state when moving between screens, such as the difficulty level select when starting a game and what the player's score is when the game over screen is shown. Can anyone give me some advice for the easiest way to implement the above screens and transitions in Android? All the create/destroy/pause/resume methods make me nervous about writing brittle code if I'm not careful. I'm not fond of using an Activity for each screen. It seems too heavy weight, having to pass data around using intents seems like a real pain and each screen isn't a useful module by itself. As the "back" button doesn't always go back to the previous screen either, my menu layout doesn't seem to fit the activity model well. At the moment, I'm representing each screen as an XML layout file and I have one activity. I set the different buttons on each layout to call setContentView to update the screen the main activity is showing (e.g. the pause button changes the layout to the pause screen). The activity holds onto all the state needed (e.g. the current difficulty level and the game high score), which makes it easy to share data between screens. This seems roughly similar to the LunarLander sample, except I'm using multiple screens. Does what I have at the moment sound OK or am I not doing things the typical Android way? Is there a class I can use (e.g. something like ViewFlipper) that could make my life easier? By the way, my game screen is implemented as a SurfaceView that stores the game state. I need the state in this view to persist between calls to setContentView (e.g. to resume from paused). Is the right idea to create the game view when the activity starts, keep a reference to it and then use this reference with setContentView whenever I want the game screen to appear?

  • Need new method for linking to native mapping from mobile web app

    My mobile web apps use a map button which automatically starts the mapping features of Android and iPhone by simply linking to http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+York. iOs 6 comes out, the links stop working, because Apple wants us to use "maps.APPLE.com". Turns out ANYTHING you send to "maps.apple.com" gets forwarded to "maps.google.com". So now I have to specially detect iOs 6 and swap out links just so Apple can forward everything back to Google anyway. Is there a clean way to open the device/native mapping app from a mobile web app that works on Android, iOs 6, and iOs pre-6, since iOs 6 nerfed it?   • How to acquire the Context in an Adobe AIR Native Extension?

    In the following line of code... ProgressDialog progressDialog = ProgressDialog.show(getBaseContext(), "LOADING_TITLE", "LOADING_MESSAGE"); In place of getBaseContext() I've tried... getApplicationContext() this NativeActivity.this (NativeActivity)getApplicationContext() Among others. I'm not sure why it's not working. In the NativeExtensionContext which extends FREContext I am passing the activity using getActivity() to NativeActivity. Everything works well but I get a "Nullpointerexception" or “android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException: Unable to add window — token null is not for an application” when I try I try to get a reference to the Context. Anyone with experience using Adobe AIR Native Extensions and/or Android Java would be great.

  • App crashing on open on Motorola Backflip only

    I have recently published my second app on the Android Market. I've gotten a few e-mails about the app crashing on open, and all users were using the Motorola Backflip. It seems to work fine on all other devices. The app shows the background image, but crashes right after that. Is there something different I have to do when coding for that device? The strange thing is that it is very similar to my first app, which seems to work just fine for them. The major difference is that my second app is a paid app, and uses Android Licence Verification. My implementation should catch any license errors though, and I've tested this on my device. Users have uninstalled and reinstalled the app without success. I'm stumped. The other thing they're reporting is that the icon doesn't even show properly, but rather is a gear in a box, which makes me think that something goes awry very early in the installation process.

  • Is it possible to create a Service that listens for hardware key presses?

    I'd like to run an Android background service that will act as a keylistener from the home screen or when the phone is asleep. Is this possible?   • What is the difference from the push and pull development models?

    I was reading Extreme Programming Explained, Second Edition and in the chapter 11 "The Theory of Constraints" the authors talk about the old and obsolete "push" development model and the XP way, the "pull" development model. It looks like a quite important concept, but it takes only a very small paragraph and two images that are mere illustrations of the "waterfall" and iterative process, nothing specific about these models except by the image caption. I searched and it doesn't go any further about it in the rest of the book. I couldn't find any further explanations or discussions about it in the Internet either. If the only difference about those is that one is "waterfall" and the other is iterative, them why push and why pull? Does anyone understand what is really the difference between those two and give some good examples?

  • Building ffmpeg with an executable output

    I generally don't like to ask such "you figure it out for me" questions, but I suspect this one will be really simple for a C++ guru. I want to build ffmpeg for Android, and I'd like it to output an executable rather than a set of libraries. We've been using the guardian project's build: https://github.com/guardianproject/android-ffmpeg It does produce what we want, but I've found tweaking it for different architectures to be, at best, unpleasant. I've gotten this version to build: https://github.com/appunite/AndroidFFmpeg It does a nice job of slicing and dicing different architectures, but produces a jni version. There is a long story as to why I want the exe, but I'll skip it for now. Is there a flag that needs to be flipped? Some path or other setting? I am at this point fully baffled. Thanks in advance.

  • Looking for a mobile platform to view vector data and use it like a simple map

    I would like to develop or use an existing platform that will allow me to view custom vector data and use it as a map on mobile phones such as Android/IPhone (Maybe even WP7). I'm hoping that there's already a good infrastructure for what I need so I would not need to develop a whole infrastructure by myself. In Conclusion - Is there any existing platform that may answer my needs? If not, how would you guys suggest I should begin? How should I save my vector data? How could I read it? Should I view it with a graphics engine like OpenGL? Is there any chance this solution could be cross-platform? I know that it's possible since it was already done with apps like Waze.   • Will taking a job that's web and database related limit my software development opportunities later on?

    I love programming, particularly OOP. My school experience was mostly in Java/OOP, and I had a job for a limited time in Java, Python, and other OOP kind of languages. However, a move necessitated a change in jobs, and what I've ended up with now is a web-development and database intensive job. I may possibly hold this job for several years. My question is, will this limit my choices later on? Will I be able to find another Java / software-development kind of job, or will I be rejected because my experience will be mostly in a different area?

  • After upgrading to 2.6.35-24 kernel, why does adb no longer list devices?

    When I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, I was able to see a physical Android device (connected via USB) in the Android Device Chooser (launched from Eclipse). But, after upgrading my kernel from 2.6.35-22-generic to 2.6.35-24-generic, no devices are listed any more, and I am unable to see any results when running adb devices like so: $ ./adb devices List of devices attached $ I have tried booting in the previous kernel version, but I get some udev error, so I was hoping I could get it working with the newer kernel version. I figured SO was the best place for this question, as it seems more developer related.

    Hi I'm a techie with no programing experience. I know html and css, but I'd like to someday be able to make an app for my phone (I have an android) and possibly mobile websites. I made learning a programing language and creating a mobile app a goal for my job, and now my boss would like me to pick a programing language to learn. I found a free open course from MIT (http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-00-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-fall-2008/) called introduction to computer science. In the course they teach python, but more importantly it seems they teach how to think like a programmer. When I told my boss about the free online course she didn't think that Python was an appropriate language for me to learn. She'd like me to learn a language that is more similar to one used to make Phone apps. Does anyone out there know a better language for me to pick up that would be similar to Android or iPhone's App language. Thank you

    I'm thinking of writing a game. It's inspired by Minecraft/Terraria (but don't worry it will be different). My main question is what language I should write it in -- it'll be relatively simple graphics, more like Terraria than Minecraft. I know Java relatively well and Minecraft is written in it, but C++ seems like the industry standard for game development. However, I know next to no C++. I'm willing to learn but am worried how it will turn out for my first real project in the language. In addition to that, I'd also like suggestions on a good game engine for the language that you suggest.   • Hardware/Software inventory open source projects

    Dear Stackoverflowers I would like to develop a Network Inventory application that works on any operating system. Reports on every possible resource attacehd to a network. Reports all pertinent details of hardware and software. Thats (and i hate to use the phrase) my "End Game". However I am running before i can crawl here. I have no experience of this type of development, e.g. discovering a computers hardware and software settings. I've spent almost two weeks googling and come up short! :-(. So I am turning to you to ask these questions:- My first step is to find an existing open source project i can incorporate into my own code that extracts the fine grained details i am after, e.g. EVERYTHING there is to know about the hardaware and software on a single machine. Does this project exist? or do i have to develop that first? Have i got to write all this in C? I am guessing getting this information about a computer is going to be easier than for printers, scanners, routers etc... e.g. everything else you would find attached to a network. Once i have access to a single computers details i then need to investigate how i can traverse an entire newtork of printers, scanners, routers, load balancers, switches, firewalls, workstations, servers, storeage devices, laptops, monitors, the list goes on and on One problem i have is i dont have a 1000 machine newtork to play on! Is there any such resource available on theinternet? (is that a silly question?) Anywho, if you dont ask you wont find out! One aspect iam really looking forward to finding out how to travers the entire network, should i be using TCP/IP for this? Whats a good site, blog, usergorup, book for TCP/IP development? How do i go about getting through firewalls? How many questions can i ask in one go? :-) My previous question on this topic ended up with PYTHON being championed as the language/script to go with to develop this application in. Having looked at a few PYTHON examples they all seemed to be related to WINDOWS networks and interrogating Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). I had the feeling you cant rely on whats in WMI, and even if you can that s no good for UNIX netwrks. Surely there exist common code for extracting hardware and software details from a computer? Why cant i find it on the internet? Pease help? Theres no prizes though :-( Thanks in advance I would like to appologise if i have broken forum rules or not tried hard enough on my own before asking for assistance. I just would like to start moving forward with this as its one of the best projects i have been involved with.   • What language/framework (technology) to use for website (flash games portal)

    Hello, I know there are a lot of similar questions on the net, but because I am a newbie in web development I didn't find the solution for my specific problem. I am planing on creating a flash games portal from scratch. It is a big chance that there will be big traffic from the beginning (millions of pageviews). I want to reduce the server costs as much as possible but in the same time to not be tide to an expensive contract as there is a chance that the project will not be as successfully as I want and in that case the money would be very little. The question is : what technology to use? I don't know any web dev technology yet so it doesn't matter what I will learn. My web dev experience is a little php 8 years ago, and from then I programmed in C++ / Java- game and mobile development. I like Java and C syntax and language very much and I tend to dislike dynamic typing or non robust scripting (like php)- but I can get along if these are the best choices. The candidates are now: - Grails (my best for now) Ruby on Rails Cake PHP Other technologies (Google App Engine, Python/Django etc...) I was considering at first using pure C and compiling the web app in the server- just to squeeze more from the servers, but soon I understand that this is overkill. Next my eyes came on Ruby - as there is a lot of buzz for it's easiness of use. Next I discovered Grails and looked at Java because it is said that it is "faster". But I don't know what this "Faster" really means on my needs, so here comes the first question: 1) What will be my biggest consumption on the server, other than bandwidth, for a lot of flash content requests? Is it memory? I heard that Java needs a lot of memory, but is faster. Is it CPU? I am planning to take some daily VPS.NET nodes at first, to see if there is a demand, and if the "spike" is permanent to move to a dedicated server (serverloft.com has some good offers), else to remain with less nodes. I was also considering developing in Google App Engine- cheap or free hosting to use at first - so I can test my assumption- and also very easy to use (no need for sys administration) but the costs became high if used more ( 3 million games played / month .. x mb/ each). And the issue with Google is that it looks me in this technology. My other concern is scalability (not only for traffic/users, but as adding functionality) My plans are to release a functional site in just 4 weeks (just the basics frontend and some quick basic backend - so I can be able to modify some things and add games manually) - but then to raise it and add more things to it. I am planning to take a little different approach than other portals so I need to write it from scratch (a script will not do). 2) Will Grails take much more resources than RoR or Php server wise? I heard that making it on Java stack will be hardware expensive and is overkill if you don't make a bank application. My application will not be very complex (I hope and i will try to) but will have a lot of traffic. I also took in account using CDN for files, but the cheapest CDN found was 5c/GB (vps.net) and the cost per gb on serverloft (http://www.serverloft.com/dedizierte-server/server-details.php?products=4) is only 1.79 cents/GB and comes with the other resources either. I am new to this domain (web). I am learning the ropes and searching on the web for ~half of year but don't have any really practical experience, so I know that I must have some naive thinking and other issues that i don't know from now, so please give me any advice you want regarding anything, not just the specific questions asked.   • WiFi signal is lost every 3 minutes

    For several weeks now my Android phone has been losing it's WiFi signal momentarily, typically at about 3 minute intervals (about 3 minutes, 1.5 seconds) and occasionally at some longer interval that always seems to be just over 3 minutes. This causes an interruption of several seconds while the WiFi connection is re-established and typically fails any kind of download/streaming that is happening, makes web sites "unreachable" and generally makes the phone unusable as a data device due to the frequency. The signal remains down for about a second, but the phone takes a few more seconds to reconnect to the router. This happens regardless of proximity to the router, which otherwise show a very strong signal - usually -40 to -30 dBm or better in the same room, nowhere less than 060 dBm anywhere in the house. Changing channels does not help (I've tried 1, 4, 8 and 9). Nor does turning off the router's guest access. Nor does turning off the 5.0 GHz band. Monitoring the signal on my phone with WiFi analyzer, shows all WiFi signals on all channels drop to nothing when the WiFi connection is lost (there are two other networks on different channels which are strong enough to be relevant, with about 6 others constantly fading in and out). WiFi analyzer shows 3 separate signals for my router, the main 2.4 GHz, the guest 2.4 GHz and the 5.0 GHz. Using WiFi Analyzer on my wife's phone side-by-side shows no change in signal when my phone drops, nor does her phone drop. Monitoring the signal using our laptop, side-by-side likewise shows no signal loss and likewise the laptop does not lose it's WiFi connection. But, at work, the phone seems to not exhibit the same behavior, or, if it does, it's very occasional. Monitoring it all day at work I only saw the signal drop 3 or 4 times. The signal strength of the various networks there is comparatively weak. AT&T were super helpful: "Sorry, we can't help you with WiFi problems. You could try doing a factory reset on your phone". </sarcasm The router is relatively new, but has been working fine with this phone since last Dec. Phone : Motorola Atrix (about 8 months old). Router : Belkin N750 DB (F9K1103 v1 (01C)). Router Firmware: 1.00.46 (2011/10/28 6:37:11). Security : WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK)

  • Galaxy Tab 3 producing continuous LightSensor error in LogCat

    I am using a Galaxy Tab 3 as a test device for writing an android app. As such I'm interested in the output of the LogCat which is being filled with these error level messages. The device itself appears to work correctly, apps which rely on the light sensor correctly respond to it and the number in the error itself goes down if the light sensor is obscured. If I wasn't using it to develop apps I wouldn't even be aware of the issue but I believe it is an issue with the device itself not my app: simply plugging the tab 3 into the computer and using Eclipse - ADT to look at the LogCat without any app running leads to these errors being shown. I know I could filter the LogCat to ignore these errors but inconvenience aside; they concern me. A sample of the log cat is below (it generates errors continuously). This is on verbose so it includes some debug level (D/) messages as well as the error level messages (E/). There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain.     The browser on the iPhone is capable of using advanced web technologies introduced in HTML5. One of these is the app cache that allows web pages to run on the client, from the cache, without a connection to the internet. Together with Local Storage you can also save data permanently "in" the page. My question is, would it then be possible to make a website that when visited and set as a web clip (bookmark on the home screen), could be accessed again, at any moment. Using HTML5, Javascript and css, you can make some very good apps and at the same time avoid the pricey developer fee, the harsh app approval and the single platform development platform? Or am I just dreaming?
