• What information should a SVN/Versioned file commit comment contain?

  I'm curious what kind of content should be in a versioned file commit comment. Should it describe generally what changed (e.g. "The widget screen was changed to display only active widgets") or should it be more specific (e.g. "A new condition was added to the where clause of the fetchWidget query to retrieve only active widgets by default") How atomic should a single commit be? Just the file containing the updated query in a single commit (e.g. "Updated the widget screen to display only active widgets by default"), or should that and several other changes + interface changes to a screen share the same commit with a more general description like ("Updated the widget screen: A) display only active widgets by default B) added button to toggle showing inactive widgets") I see subversion commit comments being used very differently and was wondering what others have had success with. Some comments are as brief as "updated files", while others are many paragraphs long, and others are formatted in a way that they can be queried and associated with some external system such as JIRA. I used to be extremely descriptive of the reason for the change as well as the specific technical changes. Lately I've been scaling back and just giving a general "This is what I changed on this page" kind of comment.

• Is it possible to use SqlGeography with Linq to Sql?

  I've been having quite a few problems trying to use Microsoft.SqlServer.Types.SqlGeography. I know full well that support for this in Ling to Sql is not great. I've tried numerous ways, beginning with what would the expected way (Database type of geography, CLR type of SqlGeography). This produces the NotSupportedException, which is widely discussed via blogs. I've then gone down the path of treating the geography column as a varbinary(max), as geography is a UDT stored as binary. This seems to work fine (with some binary reading and writing extension methods). However, I'm now running into a rather obscure issue, which does not seem to have happened to many other people. System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Types.SqlGeography' to type 'System.Byte[]'. This error is thrown from an ObjectMaterializer when iterating through a query. It seems to only occur when the tables containing geography columns are included in a query implicitly (ie. using the EntityRef<> properties to do joins). System.Data.Linq.SqlClient.ObjectReaderCompiler.ObjectReader`2.MoveNext() My question: If I'm retrieving the geography column as varbinary(max), I might expect the reverse error: can't cast byte[] to SqlGeography. That I would understand. This I don't. I do have some properies on the partial LINQ to SQL classes that hide the binary conversion... could those be the issue? Any help appreciated, and I know there's probably not enough information.

Is this achievable with NHibernate? As a bonus I would like to pass parameters to the native somefunc() SQL function. Anything producing the desired SQL is acceptable (replacing the formula field with subselects, etc...), the important thing is to have the calculated Distance property in the resulting object and order by this distance inside SQL.

• How do I grab and use a variables coming back through ValueList from an AJAX call?

• How do I programmatically insert rows into a Silverlight DataGrid without binding?

  I am using a common Silverlight DataGrid to display results from a search. The "schema" of the search can vary from query to query. To accommodate this, I am trying to dynamically populate the DataGrid. I can set explicitly set the columns, but I am having trouble setting the ItemSource. All of the MSDN examples set the ItemSource to a collection with a strong type (e.g. a Custom type with public properties matching the schema). The DataGrid then uses reflection to scour the strong type for public properties that will match the columns. Since my search results are dynamic, I cannot create a strong type to represent what comes back. Can I not just give the DataGrid an arbitrary list of objects so long as the number of objects in each list matches the number of columns? Anyone know if this is possible? I would like to do something similar to this: List<List<object>> myResults = <voodoo that populates the result list> myDataGrid.ItemsSource = myResults;

• What's the best way to select max over multiple fields in SQL?

  The I kind of want to do is select max(f1, f2, f3). I know this doesn't work, but I think what I want should be pretty clear (see update 1). I was thinking of doing select max(concat(f1, '--', f2 ...)), but this has various disadvantages. In particular, doing concat will probably slow things down. What's the best way to get what I want? update 1: The answers I've gotten so far aren't what I'm after. max works over a set of records, but it compares them using only one value; I want max to consider several values, just like the way order by can consider several values. update 2: Suppose I have the following table: id class_name order_by1 order_by_2 1 a 0 0 2 a 0 1 3 b 1 0 4 b 0 9 I want a query that will group the records by class_name. Then, within each "class", select the record that would come first if you ordered by order_by1 ascending then order_by2 ascending. The result set would consist of records 2 and 3. • ColdFusion 8 Slow Performance

  We have started a new CF8 app and it is running dog slow. A test where we go around ColdFusion (queries within a database utility) show normal speed (80ms). CF8 returns the same query in something like 60 to 80 seconds! I have been looking online and seeing lots of posts about CF8 and performance problems, but don't get any overall sense of a solution; just lots of people trying things and saying that they didn't have the problem with CF7. We are also seeing instability on the server, and some errors relating to garbage collection and the memory heap. We have a number of other applications running on CF8 and they perform adequately...our programmer is not an expert or a guru, he just plugs away. We have isolated this down to a single query that takes forever to return, so it is not a complicated test. Are there any known CF8 problems or obvious tweaks that we should consider trying? If we have to start over and learn a new environment, I will never make deadline. JoeBob

  I've got a fully custom PHP site with a lot of database calls. I just got injection hacked. This little chunk of code below showed up in dozens of my PHP pages. <?php /**/ eval(base64_decode(big string of code.... I've been pretty careful about my SQL calls and such; they're all in this format: $query = sprintf("UPDATE Sales SET `Shipped`='1', `Tracking_Number`='%s' WHERE ID='%s' LIMIT 1 ;", mysql_real_escape_string($trackNo), mysql_real_escape_string($id)); $result = mysql_query($query); mysql_close(); For the record, I rarely use mysql_close() at the end though. That just happened to be the code I grabbed. I can't think of any places where I don't use mysql_real_escape_string(), (although I'm sure there's probably a couple. I'll be grepping soon to find out) There's also no places where users can put in custom HTML or anything. In fact, most of the user-accessible pages, if they use SQL calls at all, are almost inevitably "SELECT * FROM" pages that use a GET or POST, depending. Obviously I need to beef up my security, but I've never had an attack like this and I'm not positive what I should do. I've decided to put limits on all my inputs and go through looking to see if i missed a mysql_real_escape_string somewhere... Anybody else have any suggestions? Also... what does this type of code do? Why is it there?

• Mysql select - improve performance

  Hey, I am working on an e-shop which sells products only via loans. I display 10 products per page in any category, each product has 3 different price tags - 3 different loan types. Everything went pretty well during testing time, query execution time was perfect, but today when transfered the changes to the production server, the site "collapsed" in about 2 minutes. The query that is used to select loan types sometimes hangs for ~10 seconds and it happens frequently and thus it cant keep up and its hella slow. The table that is used to store the data has approximately 2 milion records and each select looks like this: SELECT * FROM products_loans WHERE KOD IN("X17/Q30-10", "X17/12", "X17/5-24") AND 369.27 BETWEEN CENA_OD AND CENA_DO; 3 loan types and the price that needs to be in range between CENA_OD and CENA_DO, thus 3 rows are returned. But since I need to display 10 products per page, I need to run it trough a modified select using OR, since I didnt find any other solution to this. I have asked about it here, but got no answer. As mentioned in the referencing post, this has to be done separately since there is no column that could be used in a join (except of course price and code, but that ended very, very badly). Here is the show create table, kod and CENA_OD/CENA_DO very indexed via INDEX.   I'm trying to understand what is going on with my namespaces since I upgraded to flash builder 4. xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" in the application and in the stylesheets: @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"; Everything seems to be recognized correctly, however, I get a warning that says "borderThickness" is only supported by the halo theme (which I thought was in the mx theme). Now, when I try xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" then it doesn;t recognize anything. Is there something I might be doing wrong here or confusing?

• Sandcastle setup - Navigation to webpage was canceled.

  I am try to use Sandcastle Help File Builder, but can't quite get it to work. Here is what I have done: 1) installed the program; works like normal 2) enabled xml in the project I want documentation for that gets generated in the /bin 3) created a new sandcastle help file project 4) added the C# project as (its a WCF service in case that matters) a documentation service 5) ran the "build" to generate the help file 6) went to "documentation"/"view help file"/"view help file" in the GUI 7) The file opens and contains the appopriate "folders", but every page says "Navigation to the webpage was canceled" I have seen the xml file in the /bin and it contains all of my /// comments, so why are they not showing up in the help file? Any ideas?

This is very simple in a text field, but for my drop down () I'm having trouble with PHP reading the already stored name of user.   I'm trying to use AutoMapper and a repository pattern along with a fluent interface, and running into difficulty with the Linq projection. For what it's worth, this code works fine when simply using in-memory objects. When using a database provider, however, it breaks when constructing the query graph. I've tried both SubSonic and Linq to SQL with the same result. Thanks for your ideas. • Strange behavior with complex Q object filter queries in Django

  Hi I am trying to write a tagging system for Django, but today I encountered a strange behavior in filter or the Q object (django.db.models.Q). I wrote a function, that converts a search string into a Q object. The next step would be to filter the TaggedObject with these query. But unfortunately I get a strange behavior. when I search (id=20) = Q: (AND: ('tags__tag__id', 20)) and it returns 2 Taged Objects with the ID 1127 and 132 when I search (id=4) = Q: (AND: ('tags__tag__id', 4)) and it returns also 2 Objects, but this time 1180 and 1127 until here is everything fine, but when i make a little bit more complex query like (id=4) or (id=20) = Q: (OR: ('tags__tag__id', 4), ('tags__tag__id', 20)) then it returns 4(!) Objects 1180, 1127, 1127, 132 But the object with the ID 1127 is returned twice, but thats not the behaviour I want. Do I have to live with it, and uniqify that list or can I do something different. The representation of the Q object looks fine for me. But the worst is now, when I search for (id=20) and (id=4) = Q: (AND: ('tags__tag__id', 20), ('tags__tag__id', 4)) then it returns no object at all. But why? The representation should be ok and the object with the id 1127 is tagged by both. What am I missing? • Immutability of big objects

  Hi StackOverflow! I have some big (more than 3 fields) Objects which can and should be immutable. Every time I run into that case i tend to create constructor abominations with long parameter lists. It doesn't feel right, is hard to use and readability suffers. It is even worse if the fields are some sort of collection type like lists. A simple addSibling(S s) would ease the object creation so much but renders the object mutable. What do you guys use in such cases? I'm on Scala and Java, but i think the problem is language agnostic as long as the language is object oriented. Solutions I can think of: "Constructor abominations with long parameter lists" The Builder Pattern Thanks for your input!

• Flex Debugger wont launch - Only on particular project.

  When trying to launch Flex debaugger on my project, it does not launch and I get an error instead. Every other project in different workspaces launches just fine. This is the only one giving me an issue. Here is the error: Process terminated without establishing connection to debugger. • Oracle Date Format Convert Hour-Minute to Interval and Disregard Year-Month-Day

  I need to compare an event's half-way midpoint between a start and stop time of day. Right now i'm converting the dates you see on the right, to HH:MM and the comparison works until midnight. the query says: WHERE half BETWEEN pStart and pStop. As you can see below, pStart and pStap have January 1st 2000 dates, this is because the year month day are not important to me... Question: Is there a way to show those dates as integer interval so that saying half BETWEEN pStart and pStop are correct? I thought about adding 24 when pStop is less than pStart to make 00:00 into 24:00 but don't know an easy way to do that without long string concatenations and number conversions. This would solve the problem because pStart pStop difference will never be longer than 6 hours. Note: (The Query is much more complex. It has other irrelevant date calculations, but the result are show above. DATE_FORMAT(%H:%i) is applied to the first three columns and no formatting to the last three) Thanks for your help:

• How to get IQueryable<> from stored procedure (entity framework)

  I want to get IQueryable<> result when executing stored procedure. Here is peace of code that works fine: IQueryable<SomeEntitiy> someEntities; var globbalyFilteredSomeEntities = from se in m_Entities.SomeEntitiy where se.GlobalFilter == 1234 select se; I can use this to apply global filter, and later use result in such way result = globbalyFilteredSomeEntities .OrderByDescending(se => se.CreationDate) .Skip(500) .Take(10); What I want to do - use some stored procedures in global filter. I tried: Add stored procedure to m_Entities, but it returns IEnumerable<> and executes sp immediately: var globbalyFilteredSomeEntities = from se in m_Entities.SomeEntitiyStoredProcedure(1234); Materialize query using EFExtensions library, but it is IEnumerable<>. If I use AsQueryable() and OrderBy(), Skip(), Take() and after that ToList() to execute that query - I get exception that DataReader is open and I need to close it first(can't paste error - it is in russian). var globbalyFilteredSomeEntities = m_Entities.CreateStoreCommand("exec SomeEntitiyStoredProcedure(1234)") .Materialize<SomeEntitiy>(); //.AsQueryable() //.OrderByDescending(se => se.CreationDate) //.Skip(500) //.Take(10) //.ToList(); Also just skipping .AsQueryable() is not helpful - same exception.
