• Why won't this application start when I log in?

  I have a file in ~/.config/autostart/ that looks like this: [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Exec=python ~/Documents/StackApplet/stackapplet.py Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/stackapplet.png Terminal=false Comment=a panel indicator for monitoring StackExchange sites Name=StackApplet Categories=Utility; Unfortunately, it isn't working - the application is not starting when I log in. If I open a terminal and copy-and-paste the command listed in Exec above, then the application runs just fine. What am I doing wrong?

• 13.10 doesn't boot on Vaio Pro 13

  I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my new Vaio Pro 13, disabled safe mode, but used UEFI and not legacy mode. I did an encrypted LVM installation and erased the complete SSD. It booted just fine from USB, but after installation it doesn't boot. The Vaio failed boot screen appears. I then tried this advice here: 13.10 on vaio pro with UEFI sadly it fails for me with "/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of /cow." I then tried mounted the encrypted partition with Nautilus and tried this: Cannot update grub with paramters on live USB With /dev/sda2 and then to install GRUB to /dev/sda. Didn't succeed and warned me that the "GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible" What do i have to do, go fix GRUB and be able to boot my finished install? • Unable to locate Grizzly packages in Ubuntu 13.04 Server

  I have installed Ubuntu 13.04 server in my x86 based laptop and then added the desktop packages on top of it. I have downloaded all the packages using apt-get. I have MySQL, PostgreSQL, Python 3.3, etc. But I am unable to locate Grizzly-specific Nova, Swift, and Glance packages (OpenStack). I am using this command: dpkg -l | grep Nova dpkg -l | grep Glance etc. Isn't Ubuntu 13.04 Server supposed to come with Grizzly automatically?

• Well-tested libraries for player ratings?

  It's common in games to implement some sort of numerical ranking system -- the ELO system is usually used in chess. I could implement this system naively using Wikipedia's descriptions, but I suspect that this would open up a whole box of problems that have already been solved: rating inflation, etc -- for instance, the ELO system has a K constant that's 'fudged' according to rating, duration, pairings, statistics, ... What are some libraries (I'm looking at Python, but anything is okay) that implements rating systems? It also doesn't have to be ELO.

• Any command line calculator for Ubuntu?

  I am looking for a Calculator which can do calculations in the terminal itself without any other extra prefixes and suffixes. For example: If I typed something like 10000-9000 in the terminal, the answer should come out as 1000. Once again I am saying, I just need a quick calculator in terminal, without any characters added. I know if I switch to Python, it can do that but I don't want it in such a way.

• Ubuntu update deleted entries from grub

  My computer currently has Fedora, Ubuntu, and Windows installed. I just updated Ubuntu 12.04, and on restarting, the Fedora entry was gone from GRUB. Ubuntu and Windows remained, though. I have looked at these threads: Fedora login gone after Ubuntu updates on a dual boot http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=279221 GRUB's menu.lst deleted after a kernel update However, I cannot figure out how to mount the drive as suggested. It does not appear in the list on the left side of nautilus as shown in the links above. I also tried running the following as suggested above: sudo grub-install /dev/sdX sudo update-grub But this gave scary errors: /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk or to a partition. This is a BAD idea.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists. The highlighted drive below is where Fedora lives. Thanks for any help reversing Ubuntu's decision to delete this from GRUB.

• Nice way to show Powerpoints and Video

  I'm looking for a sleek way to display Powerpoint presentations and video footage in sequence. Embedding video in .ppsx is not something i want to do, reasons are plenty (video footage being VC-1 1080p would be the first). Is there a media player (needs to run on win32) capable of playing both formats? My hackish way of doing this would be a .cmd with powerpnt.exe bobloblaw.ppsx mplayer.exe -fs video.wmv pwoerpnt.exe whitepowerbill.ppsx and so on Of course, this has a lots an lots of drawbacks, including begin really hard to break out of the chain :) Thanks a lot.

• Why don't languages include implication as a logical operator?

  It might be a strange question, but why there is no implication as a logical operator in many languages (Java, C, C++, Python Haskell - although as last one have user defined operators its trivial to add it)? • Is there a library that handles hexagon tiled 2D maps?

  It would represent a map that is semi-square of arbitrary size. It would have a simple system for representation of the map coordinates such as 0101 (first column, 1st hex). I'd want the map to be able to tell me the distance between two points, and what other hexes lay between those two points as a list or array. I don't care as much about the language but c# or python would be ideal. Does one exist?

• Block-level deduplicating filesystem

  I'm looking for a deduplicating copy-on-write filesystem solution for general user data such as /home and backups of it. It should use online/inline/synchronous deduplication at the block-level using secure hashing (for negligible chance of collisions) such as SHA256 or TTH. Duplicate blocks need not even touch the disk. The idea is that I should be able to just copy /home/<user> to an external HDD with the same such filesystem to do a backup. Simple. No messing around with incremental backups where corruption to any of the snapshots will nearly always break all later snapshots, and no need to use a specific tool to delete or 'checkout' a snapshot. Everything should simply be done from the file browser without worry. Can you imagine how easy this would be? I'd never have to think twice about backing-up again! I don't mind a performance hit, reliability is the main concern. Although, with specific implementations of cp, mv and scp, and a file browser plugin, these operations would be very fast, especially when there is a lot of duplication as they would only need to transfer the absent blocks. Accidentally using conventional copy tools that do not integrate with the FS would merely take longer, waste some bandwidth when copying remotely and waste some CPU, as the duplicate data would be re-read, re-transferred and re-hashed (although nothing would be re-written), but would absolutely not corrupt anything. (Some filesharing software may also be able to benefit by integrating with the FS.) So what's the best way of doing this? I've looked at some options: lessfs - Looks unmaintained. Any good? [Opendedup/SDFS][3] - Java? Could I use this on Android?! What does [SDFS][4] stand for? [Btrfs][5] - Some patches floating around on mailing list archives, but no real support. [ZFS][6] - Hopefully they'll one day relicense under a true Free/Opensource GPL-compatible licence. Also, 2 years ago I had a go at an attempt in Python using Fuse at the file-level to be used over the top of a typical solid FS such as EXT4, but I found Fuse for Python underdocumented and didn't manage to implement all of the system calls. • Xorg constant high cpu usage

But when I think of web frameworks(I do mostly PHP) - like Cake, CI, Symfony, Laravel, Zend, Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, Rails, Django, etc - I'm like god no. Why aren't there web frameworks that provide me with simple, fun and powerful constructs like a programming language?

• How do you keep track of the authors of code?

  This is something I was never taught. I have seen alot of different types of authoring styles. I code primarily in Java and Python. I was wondering if there was a standard authoring style or if everything is freestyle. • New grad; To overcome complete lack of experience, should I ditch a creative pet project in lieu of one that would demonstrate more applicable skills?

  I am currently working on a project on github that I think would be a good demonstration of my initiative, creativity and enthusiasm. It is an educational game I am developing in pygame that enables the user to learn to improve their development productivity by using vim, specifically with python, though learning to code faster with vim should be transferable to any language. I think this is something that might have a mass appeal and benefit to a lot of people in a measurable way. -However- I am graduating from college in a month (my degree is computer science with a minor in English), with no experience that is relevant to helping me get any kind of job in the field, and a gpa that doesn't tout my merits. I could pursue a career in game development, but it's not necessarily what I'm most interested in, and see myself applying to startups around the country. To the places I am looking at applying, showing that I have experience with pygame is going to be largely irrelevant, except in demonstration of my ability to code, period. A lot of skills that ARE more marketable, such a data modeling, GIS, mobile application, development, javascript, .net framework, and various web development technologies, are not going to be showcased by this project (on the upside, employers do like to see familiarity with git and python). I'm wondering if I should sink all my free time in the next couple of months into this project, since I'm motivated and interested in it, and if the value of being able to demonstrate ambition and 'good ideas' (for lack of a better term, and in my own opinion) will compensate for the absence of demonstrating more sought-after skills. I am probably at a point where I should either commit fully to this project now, or put it on the backburner in favor of something else, and I am leaning towards continuing with what I am already working on, because I think it's a great idea, and something achievable to me with enough dedication over the next couple months. But the most important thing to me is being able to get a job out of college, which I am exceedingly concerned about as the professional landscape which I am navigating for the first time is a lot more intimidating than I could have anticipated, with almost every job (even short-term contract positions) requiring years of experience which I lack. So in brief, the common denominator to answering the question "How can I overcome experience requirements for a job" seems to be "Show off your own project." I want to know WHICH project I should work on to best increase my chances of getting a job out of college, keeping in mind that I have no experience. I believe this question is applicable to any new grad that lacks demonstrable experience.

  I've installed gedit-developer-plugins on a fresh Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander I've lauched gedit (from the terminal) but when I turn a GDP plugin on (in this case GDP Find) I get the following error: (gedit:3640): libpeas-WARNING **: Could not find loader 'python' for plugin 'gdpfind' The same error only shows while turning on GDP plugins, the others work well. Any solution to make this plugins work again?

• Why do programming languages allow shadowing/hiding of variables and functions?

  Many of the most popular programming languges (such as C++, Java, Python etc.) have the concept of hiding / shadowing of variables or functions. When I've encountered hiding or shadowing they have been the cause of hard to find bugs and I've never seen a case where I found it necessary to use these features of the languages. To me it would seem better to disallow hiding and shadowing. Does anybody know of a good use of these concepts?

• What is a 'good number' of exceptions to implement for my library?

  I've always wondered how many different exception classes I should implement and throw for various pieces of my software. My particular development is usually C++/C#/Java related, but I believe this is a question for all languages. I want to understand what is a good number of different exceptions to throw, and what the developer community expect of a good library. The trade-offs I see include: More exception classes can allow very fine grain levels of error handling for API users (prone to user configuration or data errors, or files not being found) More exception classes allows error specific information to be embedded in the exception, rather than just a string message or error code More exception classes can mean more code maintenance More exception classes can mean the API is less approachable to users The scenarios I wish to understand exception usage in include: During 'configuration' stage, which might include loading files or setting parameters During an 'operation' type phase where the library might be running tasks and doing some work, perhaps in another thread Other patterns of error reporting without using exceptions, or less exceptions (as a comparison) might include: Less exceptions, but embedding an error code that can be used as a lookup Returning error codes and flags directly from functions (sometimes not possible from threads) Implemented an event or callback system upon error (avoids stack unwinding) As developers, what do you prefer to see? If there are MANY exceptions, do you bother error handling them separately anyway? Do you have a preference for error handling types depending on the stage of operation?

• How do I estimate the number of RSS subscribers?

  I'm running a website, and would like to get a better idea how many subscribers I have. I can check the number of subscribers on Google Reader for my two feeds (RSS and Atom). I also have access to my server logs, so I sometimes collect all the IP addresses that access the feeds over a month or so and do a uniq. Is that an accurate way of doing this? Are there other feed aggregators that I need to take into account? Any pitfalls when just going by IP address? I've also thought about embedding an image in the feeds to get a better count. But do all feed readers load images automatically?
