  • Django: Is there any way to have "unique for date range"?

    - by tomwolber
    If my model for Items is: class Item(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=500) startDate = models.DateField("Start Date", unique="true") endDate = models.DateField("End Date") Each Item needs to have a unique date range. for example, if i create an Item that has a date range of June 1st to June 8th, how can I keep and Item with a date range of June 3rd to June 5th from being created (or render an error with template logic)?

  • Random record in ActiveRecord

    - by astrofoo
    I'm in need of getting a random record from a table via ActiveRecord. I've followed the example from Jamis Buck from 2006. However, I've also come across another way via a Google search (can't attribute with a link due to new user restrictions): rand_id = rand(Model.count) rand_record = Model.first(:conditions => [ "id >= ?", rand_id]) I'm curious how others on here have done it or if anyone knows what way would be more efficient.

  • IO completion port key confusion

    - by Richard Tew
    I'm writing an IO completion port based server (source code here) using the Windows DLL API in Python using the ctypes module. But this is a pretty direct usage of the API and this question is directed at those who have a knowledge of IOCP, not Python. As I understand the documentation for CreateIoCompletionPort, you specify your "user defined" completion key when you call this function with a file handle (in my case a socket) you are associating with the created IOCP. When you get around to calling GetQueuedCompletionStatus, you get a completion key value along with a pointer to an overlapped object. The completion key should identify what overlapped object and request has completed. However, let's say I pass in 100 as the completion key in my CreateIoCompletionPort call with an overlapped object. When the same overlapped object has its IO completed and it arrives back through GetQueuedCompletionStatus, the completion key that accompanies it is much larger and bares no resemblance to the original value of 100. Am I misunderstanding how the completion key works, or must I be doing it wrong in the source code I linked above?

  • Load an Assembly from Bin in ASP.NET

    - by Pete Michaud
    I have a file name, like "Foo.dll," for a library that I know is in the bin directory. I want to create an Assembly object for it. I'm trying to instantiate this object from a class that's not a page, so I don't have the Request object to get the path. How do I get the path I need to use Assembly.Load()?

  • rails, activerecord callbacks not saving

    - by Joseph Silvashy
    I have a model with a callback that runs after_update: after_update :set_state protected def set_state if self.valid? self.state = 'complete' else self.state = 'in_progress' end end But it doesn't actually save those values, why not? Regardless of if the model is valid or not it won't even write anything, even if i remove the if self.valid? condition, I can't seem to save the state. Um, this might sound dumb, do I need to run save on it?

  • Visual Studio Unit Test failure to start

    - by swmi
    Hi, I am having an issue when starting the tests under debug mode in Visual Studio 2008 Team Test where it gives the following error: "Failed to queue test run '{user@machinename}': Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I googled for the error but no joy. Don't even understand what it means as it is too brief. Has anyone come across this? Note that I can run tests fine if I am not debugging and I get the same error irrespective of the test I run. Thank you, Swati ETA: Being new to Visual Studio Team Test, I didn't know there was a better exception log then what I was seeing. Anyhow, here it is: <Exception> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.TestCaseManagement.QualityToolsPackage. • PHP Flatten Array with multiple leaf nodes

    - by tafaju
    What is the best way to flatten an array with multiple leaf nodes so that each full path to leaf is a distinct return? array("Object"=>array("Properties"=>array(1, 2))); to yield Object.Properties.1 Object.Properties.2 I'm able to flatten to Object.Properties.1 but 2 does not get processed with recursive function: function flattenArray($prefix, $array) { $result = array(); foreach ($array as $key => $value) { if (is_array($value)) $result = array_merge($result, flattenArray($prefix . $key . '.', $value)); else $result[$prefix . $key] = $value; } return $result; } I presume top down will not work when anticipating multiple leaf nodes, so either need some type of bottom up processing or a way to copy array for each leaf and process (althought that seems completely inefficient)

  • Multithread Communication

    - by Robert
    I'm creating a WPF application that uses a custom object to populate all the controls. The constructor of that object is initiated by an EventHandler that waits for an API. The problem I'm having is when I try to access any information from that object using a button for example, it returns an error saying "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it". I'm assuming this is because the EventHandler creates a new thread which doesn't allow the MainThread to have access to it. Any ideas on how to get around this?

  • How should I cleanly track selected item in ASP.NET MVC?

    - by Aaron Anodide
    Is there a better way to track the selected item than how I do it in the code below which implements a row of navigation links. @Html.ActionLink( "PreApproval", "Summary", new { mode = "preapproval" }, new { @class = Model.Mode == "preapproval" ? "selected" : "notselected" }) | @Html.ActionLink( "ActionNeeded", "Summary", new { mode = (string)null }, new { @class = string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(Model.Mode) ? "selected" : "notselected" }) | ... Should I try to encasulate the functionality of menu navigation or is this a standard approach?

  • Different behaviour of method overloading in C#

    - by Wondering
    Hi All, I was going through C# Brainteasers(http://www.yoda.arachsys.com/csharp/teasers.html) and came accross one question:what should be the o/p of below code class Base { public virtual void Foo(int x) { Console.WriteLine ("Base.Foo(int)"); } } class Derived : Base { public override void Foo(int x) { Console.WriteLine ("Derived.Foo(int)"); } public void Foo(object o) { Console.WriteLine ("Derived.Foo(object)"); } } class Test { static void Main() { Derived d = new Derived(); int i = 10; d.Foo(i); // it prints ("Derived.Foo(object)" } } but if I change the code to enter code here class Derived { public void Foo(int x) { Console.WriteLine("Derived.Foo(int)"); } public void Foo(object o) { Console.WriteLine("Derived.Foo(object)"); } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Derived d = new Derived(); int i = 10; d.Foo(i); // prints Derived.Foo(int)"); Console.ReadKey(); } } I want to why the o/p is getting changde when we are inheriting vs not inheriting , why method overloading is behaving differently in both the cases

  • Java: creating objects of arrays with different names at runtime and accessing/updating them

    - by scriptingalias
    Hello, I'm trying to create a class that can instantiate arrays at runtime by giving each array a "name" created by the createtempobjectname() method. I'm having trouble making this program run. I would also like to see how I could access specific objects that were created during runtime and accessing those arrays by either changing value or accessing them. This is my mess so far, which compiles but gets a runtime exception. import java.lang.reflect.Array; public class arrays { private static String temp; public static int name = 0; public static Object o; public static Class c; public static void main(String... args) { assignobjectname(); //getclassname();//this is supposed to get the name of the object and somehow //allow the arrays to become updated using more code? } public static void getclassname() { String s = c.getName(); System.out.println(s); } public static void assignobjectname()//this creates the object by the name returned { //createtempobjectname() try { String object = createtempobjectname(); c = Class.forName(object); o = Array.newInstance(c, 20); } catch (ClassNotFoundException exception) { exception.printStackTrace(); } } public static String createtempobjectname() { name++; temp = Integer.toString(name); return temp; } }

  • Is there a Firebug console -vsdoc.js?

    - by David Murdoch
    If not, does anyone care to write one? I would do it myself...but I don't have time right now...maybe next week (unless someone beats me to it). If you are bored and want to compile the vsdoc: Here is the Firebug API. Here is a blog post about the format for VS doc comments for intellisense. Here is an example vsdoc (jquery-1.4.1-vsdoc.js). I created the following because I kept typing cosnole instead of console. You can use it as a starting point (ish). console = { /// <summary> /// 1: The javascript console /// </summary> /// <returns type="Object" /> }; console.log = function (object) { /// <summary> /// Write to the console's log /// </summary> /// <returns type="null" /> /// <param name="object" type="Object"> /// Write the object to the console's log /// </param> };

  • Is Dynamic Casting Possible in Java

    - by Tom Tucker
    So I have a class of overloaded methods like this: class Foo { public void test(Object value) { ... } public void test(String value) { ... } } I need to pass a property value of a bean to one of these methods depending on its type, but I don't know the actual property type until the runtime. e.g. public void run(Object bean, String propertyName) { Foo foo = new Foo(); foo.test(PropertyUtils.getProperty(bean, propertyName)); } BTW, PropertyUtils.getProperty() is a helper method that returns a value of the specified property on a bean. PropertyUtils.getProperty() returns an Object, so that test(Object value) will be always called and the actual property type will be ignored. I can figure out the propery type in the runtime, even if its value is null. Is there such a thing as dynamic casting in Java? If not, is there a way to have an overloaded method with the correct parameter type called?

  • How to implement an ID field on a POCO representing an Identity field in SQL Server?

    - by Dr. Zim
    If I have a Domain Model that has an ID that maps to a SQL Server identity column, what does the POCO look like that contains that field? Candidate 1: Allows anyone to set and get the ID. I don't think we want anyone setting the ID except the Repository, from the SQL table. public class Thing { public int ID {get;set;} } Candidate 2: Allows someone to set the ID upon creation, but we won't know the ID until after we create the object (factory creates a blank Thing object where ID = 0 until we persist it). How would we set the ID after persisting? public class Thing { public Thing () : This (ID: 0) {} public Thing (int ID) { this.ID = ID } private int _ID; public int ID { get { return this.ID;}; } Candidate 3: Methods to set ID? Somehow we would need to allow the Repository to set the ID without allowing the consumer to change it. Any ideas? Is this barking up the wrong tree? Do we send the object to the Repository, save it, throw it away, then create a new object from the loaded version and return that as a new object?

  • Jboss logging issue - pl check this

    - by balaji
    I’m Working as deployer and server administrator. We use Jboss 4.0x AS to deploy our applications. The issue I'm facing is, Whenever we redeploy/restart the server, server.log is getting created but after sometime the logging goes off. Yes it is not at all updating the server.log file. Due to this, we could not trace the other critical issues we have. Actually we have two separate nodes and we do deploy/restarting the server separately on two nodes. We are facing the issue in both of our test and production environment. I could not trace out where exactly the issue is. Could you please help me in resolving the issue? If we have any other issues, we can check the log files. If log itself is not getting updated/logged, how can we move further in analyzing the issues without the recent/updated logs? • ASP.net MVC Linq-To-SQL Many-To-Many Field Binding

    - by user336858
    Hi there, The short version of this question is "Is there a way to gracefully handle database insertion for an object that has a many-to-many field that has been set up in a partial class?" Apologies if it's been asked before. Example Suppose I have a typical MVC setup with the tables: Posts {PostID, ...} Categories {CategoryID, ...} A post can have more than one category, and a category can identify more than one post. Thus suppose further that I need an extra table: PostCategories {PostID, CategoryID, ...} This handles the many-to-many relationship between posts and categories. As far as I know, there's no way to do this in Linq-to-SQL right now so I have to shoehorn it in by adding a partial Post class to the project to add that functionality. Something like: public partial class Post { public IEnumerable<Category> Categories{ get { ... } set { ... } } } So I can now create a "Create" view that automatically populates a "Categories" UI item. This is where the trouble starts. So here's my question: How do you get automatic object model binding to work cleanly with an object that has a many-to-many relationship to control? The workaround that makes many-to-many relationships possible relies on the Post object having a PostID in order to be associated with CategoryID(s), which is only issued after the Post object has been submitted for validation and insertion. Bit of a Catch22 here. Any terminology, links, or tips you can provide would be tremendously helpful!

  • PHP: SimpleXML and Arrays

    - by acemasta
    When I run this code: foreach($xml->movie as $movie) { if(isset($movie->photos)) { foreach ($movie->photos as $photo) { echo $photo."&nbsp;"; } echo "<hr/>"; } } I get nice output of the actual data, e.g. a row looks like 06397001.jpg 06397002.jpg 06397003.jpg 06397004.jpg 06397005.jpg But when I throw it in an array, it includes all the SimpleXML wrapper tags and the jpgs are not at the root of the array. code: foreach($xml->movie as $movie) { if(isset($movie->photos)) { $photos = array(); foreach ($movie->photos as $photo) { $photos[] = $photo; } } else $photos = ""; var_dump($photos); echo "<hr />"; } e.g. same row looks like array(5) { [0]= object(SimpleXMLElement)#11 (1) { [0]= string(12) "06397001.jpg" } [1]= object(SimpleXMLElement)#12 (1) { [0]= string(12) "06397002.jpg" } [2]= object(SimpleXMLElement)#13 (1) { [0]= string(12) "06397003.jpg" } [3]= object(SimpleXMLElement)#14 (1) { [0]= string(12) "06397004.jpg" } [4]= object(SimpleXMLElement)#15 (1) { [0]= string(12) "06397005.jpg" } } Why is this happening/how can I remove this so I just get an array of the photos at root level like when I echo it? Thanks, sorry for the single line code formatting; was messing up when I tried to paste directly with line breaks.

  • Design: How to declare a specialized memory handler class

    - by Michael Dorgan
    On an embedded type system, I have created a Small Object Allocator that piggy backs on top of a standard memory allocation system. This allocator is a Boost::simple_segregated_storage< class and it does exactly what I need - O(1) alloc/dealloc time on small objects at the cost of a touch of internal fragmentation. My question is how best to declare it. Right now, it's scope static declared in our mem code module, which is probably fine, but it feels a bit exposed there and is also now linked to that module forever. Normally, I declare it as a monostate or a singleton, but this uses the dynamic memory allocator (where this is located.) Furthermore, our dynamic memory allocator is being initialized and used before static object initialization occurs on our system (as again, the memory manager is pretty much the most fundamental component of an engine.) To get around this catch 22, I added an extra 'if the small memory allocator exists' to see if the small object allocator exists yet. That if that now must be run on every small object allocation. In the scheme of things, this is nearly negligable, but it still bothers me. So the question is, is there a better way to declare this portion of the memory manager that helps decouple it from the memory module and perhaps not costing that extra isinitialized() if statement? If this method uses dynamic memory, please explain how to get around lack of initialization of the small object portion of the manager.

  • What database systems should an startup company consider?

    - by Am
    Right now I'm developing the prototype of a web application that aggregates large number of text entries from a large number of users. This data must be frequently displayed back and often updated. At the moment I store the content inside a MySQL database and use NHibernate ORM layer to interact with the DB. I've got a table defined for users, roles, submissions, tags, notifications and etc. I like this solution because it works well and my code looks nice and sane, but I'm also worried about how MySQL will perform once the size of our database reaches a significant number. I feel that it may struggle performing join operations fast enough. This has made me think about non-relational database system such as MongoDB, CouchDB, Cassandra or Hadoop. Unfortunately I have no experience with either. I've read some good reviews on MongoDB and it looks interesting. I'm happy to spend the time and learn if one turns out to be the way to go. I'd much appreciate any one offering points or issues to consider when going with none relational dbms?

  • Hibernate: Walk millions of rows and don't leak memory

    - by Autocracy
    The below code functions, but Hibernate never lets go of its grip of any object. Calling session.clear() causes exceptions regarding fetching a joined class, and calling session.evict(currentObject) before retrieving the next object also fails to free the memory. Eventually I exhaust my heap space. Checking my heap dumps, StatefulPersistenceContext is the garbage collector's root for all references pointing to my objects. public class CriteriaReportSource implements JRDataSource { private ScrollableResults sr; private Object currentObject; private Criteria c; private static final int scrollSize = 10; private int offset = 1; public CriteriaReportSource(Criteria c) { this.c = c; advanceScroll(); } private void advanceScroll() { // ((Session) Main.em.getDelegate()).clear(); this.sr = c.setFirstResult(offset) .setMaxResults(scrollSize) .scroll(ScrollMode.FORWARD_ONLY); offset += scrollSize; } public boolean next() { if (sr.next()) { currentObject = sr.get(0); if (sr.isLast()) { advanceScroll(); } return true; } return false; } public Object getFieldValue(JRField jrf) throws JRException { Object retVal = null; if(currentObject == null) { return null; } try { retVal = PropertyUtils.getProperty(currentObject, jrf.getName()); } catch (Exception ex) { Logger.getLogger(CriteriaReportSource.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } return retVal; } }

  • Android: Send arbitrary objects within Activities?

    - by Sebastian
    I have read some question here but I didn't find a solution. I have read about Parcelable, Intents, and sharing specific data within Activities from the android dev docs (both dev guide and reference). Here's the scenario: I have one ListActivity that fills in an object parsing an xml file, it shows a list of values, and when clicked I want to return the object that represents the item clicked to the activity that has called it, for then, call another activity with this object. I read on how to implement Parcelable but seems not being the way. Implementing Parcelable receives a Parcel for the constructor and then reads the values from it (or at least that was what I understood). This makes no sense for me and I can't see how to implement basing on that issue. I build the object parsing the xml file, not having a Parcel. I appreciate some clarifications on this, regards.

  • How to render consistence and smooth moving animation on iphone / ipod / iphone simulator.

    - by shakthi
    I am trying render a simple animation(object movement animations) on iphone. I used opengl for object rendering. Movements appears to be smooth on the simulator. But if I used same code in the ipod, object movement is slower. In the iphone it is still slower. I googled a bit and found 'frame rate independent rendering method', which taught me the concept of 'time interval' and object movement based on it. However result is very unpleasant. There is a lot of jerk in the animation even when fps remains above 20. Following code fragment is used for calculation of time interval between successive frames and I am using that to move my animation. NSTimeInterval GetTimeIntervals(NSTimeInterval * inLastElapsedTime ) { NSTimeInterval intervalTime = 0; NSTimeInterval currentTime = [NSDate timeIntervalSinceReferenceDate]; if(*inLastElapsedTime != 0 ) { intervalTime = currentTime - *inLastElapsedTime; } *inLastElapsedTime = currentTime; return intervalTime; }
